This was an entertaining novel from Sally Hepworth. I enjoy her writing very much as she has great character development. This particular story was a bit predictable but I still felt the need to finish.
This book was so good! I am still trying to process it - I really got sucked into the story. Unexpected twists and turns, a dynamic relationship between the two main characters, so good! Love this author and excited to read more of her work.
A sister will always take care of you and put your best interest ahead of their own. Sometimes, like Fern in the story, it feels as if your sister is the only one to understand you. A great story that kept me engaged all the way to the very end. This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won’t be my last.
Another winner from this author. Compelling story of two sisters and their complex history. Right from the beginning, I sensed there was more to their relationship. The author did an excellent job sprinkling subtle clues throughout the story.
Having read Sally Hepworth's The Mother-In-Law last year and loved it, I had high expectations for this book. It didn't quite wow me as much as the earlier read but I enjoyed the complicated bond between two sisters, one with a a psychological disorder that impacts not just how the siblings interact but how they engage in the world. The story moves between following the two characters, using one's diary entries interspersed with a first person narrative to show the different lives and perspectives.
Fern and Rose are adult twins who have learned to care for each other after losing both parents at a young age. One of the women has a social disorder and her sister has always helped her navigate through the world so it seems natural to do everything to repay "that good sister" when the opportunity arises. Alongside the unnatural codependence, Hepworth introduces romance and marital issues, along with flashbacks to childhood scenes and contrived memories that may paint one or the other sister in a bad light. This did introduce a bit of a troublesome subplot which neither resolution seemed to justify satisfactorily.
I enjoyed the bookish inclusions, especially the library setting and the positive images associated with the myriad of literary references. The honesty and simplicity of the romantic relationship contrasts perfectly with the dysfunctional family dynamics and provided the perfect structure for the character development. I am still not sure how to feel about how many personality issues were included as plot devices and I didn't love where the book goes in order to reveal the duplicity. However, while the twists that Hepworth achieved were not completely shocking, they were still poignant to experience and The Good Sister was a truly entertaining read from start to finish.
Fans of Graeme Samson's Rosie series and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine will enjoy reading this one.
Note: I received a complimentary eARC of The Good Sister from St. Martin's Press and Netgalley in order to complete this review.
Sally Hepworth has done it again, a thriller that kept me reading after bedtime. Rose and Fern are twin sisters and Rose takes care of Fern. Life has been difficult but Rose has always been there because Fern has sensory issues and can't function without Rose's guidance. Fern has a job she's good at and a place of her own but Rose is always there insisting that Fern forgot to do things and that she needs Rose and that she can't be trusted because of what happened in the past. But is Rose telling the truth? Which version of the story is the truth?
In every family there seems to be a good person and one not so good. Two sisters, two different points of view. Who is telling the truth? I knew something was off. I just didn't know with which. When the truth unfolded, I was left thinking, wow! I would definitely recommend this book. Thank you Netgalley.
Loved this book by Sally Hepworth. Its about twin sisters, one of whom (Fern) has sensory processing disorder. Rose, the other twin is unable to get pregnant, and Fern decides to get pregnant and give the baby to her sister. Lots of twists toward the end. Looking forward to reading more books by this author.
I really did enjoy this book , The Good Sister was very well written, , I had a hard time putting it down, Very exciting book ,
This is the first book I've read from this author and I cannot wait to read more. I was blown away with this book. Its a psychological thriller that will have you hooked from the beginning. Absolutely amazing.
Thank you Netgalley, the author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another amazing story by Sally Hepworth! This is an excellent tale of two sisters that alternates between their childhood and present day adulthood. What seems straightforward at the beginning begins to change shape as we learn more about the sisters and the true state of their relationship. Excellent from beginning to end!
This was great! I loved the characters and the dry humor Fern's character brought throughout the book. You might see the twists coming, but still such an enjoyable and fast read. Thank you to St. Martin's Publishing Group for the ARC. I'd definitely recommend this one!
Sally Hepworth is quickly becoming one of my favorite psychological mystery writers.
I loved this book, which centers on adult sisters Rose and Fern. I enjoyed the characterization of Rose especially, but I felt the dialogue, plot, and all characters were on point for an enthralling, engaging read.
I cannot recommend this author enough.
Between this book and THE MOTHER IN-LAW, Sally Hepworth is one of my new favorite, can't-miss-a-book-she-writes authors. This is the story of twin sisters: a high-functioning librarian with autistic tendencies, and the sister who has given up a lot in her life to help take care of her twin. A rough childhood with multiple traumatic events have made them close, and they only really trust each other. Of course, things are never as they seem (or else the book would be too boring!), but the twist here was a good one. I read a lot of suspense novels, and this one seemed fresh and held my attention all the way through. Overall, a quick, very entertaining read!
Wow! This twisted tale was a rollercoaster start to finish!
Fern and rose are twins who couldn’t be more different. The story is told from each girls perspective as well as Roses Journal. Though it seems they remember their upbringing quite differently. Something in their past could have life altering consequences for one girl... but which one? Because the trust is never cut and dried.
I ADORED the characters especially Fern. This author did a fantastic job creating this unique character and all her quirks. I literally couldn’t put this down. I was sad when I was finished. This is one of those books where I will miss the characters.
It was suspenseful and twisty and turny and had a great plot twist at the end.... but it still was endearing and made me smile in parts. What a great mix. This is a must read.
I loved everything about this book. Rose and Fern were amazingly wonderful characters. I normally find depictions of people on the spectrum annoying, but Fern came alive and seemed as alive as any character I have ever encountered. I am not sure how I would describe this novel. It is a thriller, a character study, and a touching, love story.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press for a gifted review copy of The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth. All opinions in this review are my own. 4.5⭐
Fern and Rose are twins who grow up with only each other and their mother. Fern has always seen Rose as her caretaker due to Fern's being different. She struggles with sounds, lights, touch, and more. Rose knows how to get Fern through difficult situations. Rose is married, has her own home, and desperately wants a baby. Fern lives on her own and works in a local library. She spends a lot of time with her sister. Fern would do anything for Rose including trying to have a baby for her. What will Rose think about the lengths her sister is willing to go to just to help her? What lengths will Rose go to to protect and keep Fern safe? Is Fern capable of taking care of herself?
The story alternates between Rose and Fern. Rose's point of view is told through her diary entries which tells a little about the present and a lot about past, including some family secrets. Fern's point of view is in the present.
This is a good example of....how well do you really know your family members? The story starts out at a slow and steady pace as you learn about both sisters and their pasts. Soon the story picks up with some interesting twists and turns.
Sally Hepworth has written another interesting and enjoyable book. I look forward to her future books.

Thank you so much to Sally Hepworth, the publisher (St. Martin's Press) and NetGalley for an early copy of the book for an honest review.
What an absolute extraordinary book by the great author, Sally Hepworth. This book is the story of twins, Rose and Fern, told from mostly Fern's point of view, however every few chapters there was a journal chapter by Rose and I was mesmerized by these journal chapters as these truly put a totally different take on the story that was being told.
Rose truly wants to become a mother, and her twin sister, Fern wants to help her achieve that goal; however the more that Rose clings to Fern, the more Fern realizes that things that Rose does, isn't always in the best interest of Fern.
This book was creepy and very unpredictable, and just when you thought you knew exactly what was going on, the script changes and everything finally comes together at the end. GREAT READ!!!
5 Wow Stars!!!!
Story alternates with the POV of Fern and Rose, twin sisters. Their stories are very different.
Rose’s story is dark as she talks about their sociopathic abusive mother who targeted her.
Their mother seemed to always take Fern’s side and would accuse and blame Rose. Rose felt she was protected Fern.
Fern’s story is more light hearted and she reminds me of Eleanor Oliphant from "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" as well as Christopher from "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time" all are on the spectrum of Asperger’s Syndrome.
Fern’s is a librarian and not married and even though she has issues and no doubt is quirky, she is highly functional.
Rose has been married for a few years and has become obsessed with having a baby. She has fertility issues.
Kind hearted Fern decides she will have a baby and give the baby to Rose who so desperately wants a child. So when Fern meets Wally who is somewhat like her well … hmm so on and so forth... I don’t want to tell you too much as this is a great novel.
This is my fourth author, Sally Hepworth] novel. I gave 5 stars to both "The Mother-in-Law" and
"The Family Next Door". The other novel "The Secrets of Midwives" earned 4 stars.
Sally Hepworth is a great story teller and does not disappoint! I enjoyed reading her “Acknowledgements” in the back of the novel. Love when authors give us readers the insight to their inspirations for their stories. I look forward to her next novel….in the meantime, I have missed couple so will put them on my TRB list.
Want to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this eGalley. This file has been made available to me before publication in an early form for professional review purposes only. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I received a free copy from NetGalley. Rose and Fern are sisters. Since Fern is special needs, Rose has dedicated her life to looking out for her. But Fern sets out to help her sister and meets a man who understands her and loves her. Along the way, things start to change between the sisters. Wonderful book with non-traditional characters as the the main characters and told from her point of view. A good mystery and love story.
