This was a fun and cute read! I thought that the characters were lovely and the vignettes were funny, I just wish that it had more of a story arc.
I remember seeing this comic online before. Very cute, but it does feel like it works better as a webcomic compared to a completed physical book.
It should be said that, anyone who wants to write a story about werewolves and vampires (really, any monster archetype) in the modern day must have a really compelling and original premise to make that story stand out from the million-and-a-half other vampire/werewolf/zombie/whatever stories currently out there.
The premise of "Fangs" is that a werewolf and a vampire living in modern-day meet at a bar for monsters and have a long-term relationship. And that's pretty much it.
While the "human-dating-monster" trope is as old as time, the "monsters dating each other" isn't at all a new concept either, dating back to at least "The Bride of Frankenstein". Even if they are less monsters as much as they are people afflicted with lycanthropy and vampirism.
The characters in the book are sadly very one-dimensional. There's nothing that particularly makes me want to root for this couple specifically. While they are attracted to each other and they share a lot of cute moments (which seem to be the main focus of the story outside of all the jokes), it often feels like they're forcing themselves to be with each other out of necessity because they're both monsters, rather than sharing a complex love that grows over time or bonding over similar interests. Much of that can be attributed to how scenes last 1 to 2 pages tops, and a much stronger focus on telling jokes than on storytelling.
And even there, most of the jokes fall flat. The jokes are along the lines of like, "Jimmy's a werewolf so he hates the mailman and he likes to chase squirrels...geeeet it?" and "She's a vampire so her boyfriend can't eat garlic or wear silver...geeeeeetttt iiiiiiiiiiittttttt??" Also there are several "dad joke" level punchlines that they'll say to each other, like "My first boyfriend was a vampire. He sucked!" and "Sometimes I feel different. At least once a month, I don't even feel human!" The first time feels like ironically bad humor. The next ten times feel like maybe the author is really trying to make the audience groan every time they turn the page.
They also have a fight at one point in the book. It isn't mentioned or implied what they were fighting about or how the fight ended. It's merely a set-up to another joke.
And it's a shame too, because I feel there is some potential allegory here that could have been explored. Something like: When people who see themselves as different or weird or unusual or lower-in-status (the "monsters") can't find acceptance or love from people who they see as normal or attractive or favorable in some way (the "humans"), the different ones find joy in each other's company instead. Sadly, there are little to no interactions with regular humans in the book, and the extent of the main characters' personalities is "The vampire girl likes wearing black because she's a vampire."
And another thing, too: The vampire girl says that she's "vegan", which to her means that, instead of biting people and either killing or vampirizing them, she steals from a blood bank. Which assumingly means she finds that more ethical. It's not like blood banks NEED that blood to save people's lives or anything, right? Definitely very ethical, Vamp (/sarcasm).
I have a feeling that this book is written for girls who think they're into dark stuff like knives and blood when in reality they can't watch horror movies because they're too scary and are afraid to ask for more ketchup packets. The "Bubbles" (from PowerPuff Girls) complex, if you will ("I CAN BE HARDCORE TOO!"). And I have a feeling the author is very much like that as well.
"Fangs" is a tad more sophisticated than her "Sarah's Scribbles" comics and books, whose short bites about a womanchild bouncing between #relatable humor and more-than-mildly-concerning insecurities might be grating or become stale for many readers.
I will give it this: It is a very quick book to read. You can finish the book in 10 minutes. Also the book cover is made of a very nice linen fabric, which you don't see much these days anymore. Very nice to the touch.
But all in all, while I wouldn't describe it as terrible, the book is forgettable, bland, doesn't have much reason to exist, and I feel that, even if you did like the humor or the characters or the drawings, you'd still only read it a few times and then toss aside to collect dust. I've heard that you can find some of the comic pages from this book online, and if you can, do a search for them and read some of the pages that you find. I can guarantee you, what you find is what you're going to get. If the pages you find don't entertain you enough to want to read more, than this book is a definite skip.
I appreciate the publisher allowing me to read this book. I had a hard time getting into this book just not my style I think
This book was super cute! My library did end up buying it and I'm so glad we did. This was a super quick read but the comics are so funny its definitely one you will come back to again and again just to hang out with this amazing couple. The art style fit the story perfectly. I was already a fan of her other work but this cements that I will read anything by Sarah Andersen.
This is a comical graphic novel about Else, a Vampire, and Jimmy, a werewolf, falling in love and their everyday lives as a couple. It was super cute and quirky with witty puns. The wya both of them tried to adjust the shortcoming of each other and adjust themselves in their daily routines had all my heart.
The illustrations are well drawn and beautifully captures the essence of the story. However, the whole books is not like a story with a beginning and ending and like that there is going to happen something. It has just the starting of how they met and then we see their daily lives. Each page works on its own as a short comic. This was my first book by Sarah Anderson so I had no idea that all her comics are like this where each page works as a short comic on its own. But i loved this style.
This book covered all the stereotypical jokes about vampires and wolves with an ease. This is such a wholesome and fun book and I would totally recommend it.
This was absolutely cute! I’ve read Sarah Andersen’s works before and she does not let down, it is a short but really needed read. Adored the illustrations and the chemistry between the characters.
If you follow webcomics, Sarah Andersen is the creator of Sarah’s Scribbles, a delightfully funny four-panel commentary on her daily life and neuroses. I didn’t realise that she also wrote a paranormal webcomic called Fangs, which is available on the Tapas platform. Those comics, plus a few never-before-released ones, have recently been issued in a hardcover book. The art in this book is great, and I definitely laughed out loud, but at this price and this length it’s a luxury purchase for fans.
Elsie is a vampire, and Jim is a werewolf, and the comics are slice-of-life moments in their relationship. They’re generally quite funny – riffs on vampire and werewolf lore, like Jim accidentally kissing Elsie after eating garlic, but also character-based humor like the two wanting a relaxing night in and watching the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Early on, Elsie recaps some gruesome kills from before she ate from blood banks, and that was off-putting for me. However, I definitely laughed out loud at many other moments in this comic, especially the ones that play with Jim’s wolf/dog side (the landlord is not pleased about the presence of a pet!).
Fangs is a fun, generally entertaining read, but I’m not exaggerating when I say I read the 112 pages in about ten minutes. Unless you really want to own this for yourself, or if you’re looking for a fun gift, I suggest reading her comics on the web or getting this from a library.
This was really cute. Sarah Andersen is amazing. Even though this is different from her usual, it still has her mark on it.
Fangs is a departure from Sarah Andersen's usual illustration style and focus (a cartoon version of her anxiety-filled self) but it is equally heartfelt, wonderfully drawn, and funny. The "opposites attract" trope is given a new twist, resulting in a hilarious yet tender look at a relationship.
Quick and fun read about vampire/werewolf romance. Lots of fun quips and references to vampire and werewolf lore, as well as some more traditional tropes about living together and having a pet.
This is such a stinking cute graphic novel! It's a fluffy, funny and romantic story about a vampire and a werewolf who are perfect for each other, despite the obvious differences. It's drawn in 4-koma style, so each story is one page long making it a quick read.
Today I’m recommending a funny graphic novel for Halloween 🎃
Sarah Andersen explores a new subgenre with Fangs, which has an urban gothic while contemporary setting, silly-yet-funny puns, sarcasm, great artwork, and a realistic depiction of how a relationship between a vampire and a werewolf would be if they were perfect for eah other, though extremely different.
Yes, I said realistic 🤣
Thank you Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
So read this in one sitting this morning, literally just finished it! And it is soooooo cute, and fun, and fluffy, and ADORABLE. It’s about a cute romance between a vampire and a werewolf and all of the cute scenarios they find themselves in. Thank you to NetGalley who put this in this Read Now section, and thank you to myself to download this on a whim late last night, haha!
This title is so artistically different from Andersen's typical Sarah's Scribbles, but so absolutely lovely that I wish there had been more of it. This snack of a book was so delightful and full of love that I accidentally gobbled it up in one sitting. I am very glad I own a copy so that I can return to it.
absolutely adored it! The romance was made to be perfection. I can't stop telling my friends to pick it up! The drawings are cute and well drawn! and the puns? They slay me and I cannot stop laughing. LOVED IT!
I loved seeing this art in book form. It's simple and beautiful and the story heartfelt and funny. A quick read that I wanted to read again as soon as it was over.
*I received an electronic ARC of this book from Andrews McMeel Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
I was pleasantly surprised when a friend told me that Fangs was written by Sarah Andersen. The style of these comics is so different from her other published books, but just as wonderful. These comics tell us about the relationship between a vampire and a werewolf, which turns out to be utterly cute. I found myself laughing out loud, being a bit grossed out at times (in a good way) and totally in love at others. The collection is well thought, well written and impeccably illustrated. I really enjoyed the black and white illustrations. I recommend this book to anyone interested in mythological creatures, dark humor, romance, and gothic themes.
FOR THE RECORD I had no idea who it was by and after reading I learned and it didn't really help... l o l.... This is just so corny and twee and not for me. Didn't hate it just... glad I didn't spend money and much time on it... I read it while doing other things so I'm also glad I didn't waste extra time on it.. 👀 It's just vampire and werewolf falling in love but corny. woteva man.
I decided to read Fangs By Sarah Andersen because I wanted to read a cute supernatural romance. Once I started reading I fell in love with the characters and the whole concept, it gave me "Only Lovers Left Alive" vibes!
This story follows a woman named Elsie who is a 300 year old Vampire who is looking for someone to date at the Odditorium (Monster Bar). Also Jimmy who is a Werewolf looking for a lover at the same bar. Both of them meet each other and their romantic relationship starts from there. I really love the dynamic between each character in their unusual relationship because both characters are complete opposites from each other but make it work. I find both character very fascinating! Elsie is an vampire who that's 300 years old (looks 26), has some flaws: allergic to the sun unless in fully covered clothes (she'll burn alive if not), garlic is a problem, can't show up in photos & her eyes bleed when she cries which are some classic vampire traits. But she doesn't mind dating outside of her species, loves reading "Dracula", "Interview with the Vampire" but doesn't like "Twilight" (which I perfectly understand why), she makes Blood Popsicles (which is an Only Lovers Left Alive reference), takes care of her boyfriend in wolf mode and wears a lot of gothic fashion.
Jimmy is a werewolf who loves nature (morning person but night time as a wolf), wolf music, changes under a full moon into a beautiful white wolf, sliver can kill him, loves wearing plaid and jeans (the Wolfman classic look), doesn't mind dating outside of his species, and eats like an animal! There are more moments I love but I don't want to fully spoil the book. The art style is very cute and clear it fits this story beautifully! I will re-read this many times now because I love the supernatural romance that Elsie and Jimmy share in this book it's so cute! I would recommend this book to people looking for a new supernatural romance to read or a cute quick comic book read!
