The Wood Burn Book is a comprehensive book on pyrography art. It covers the essential tools like choosing a burner, type of nibs, cleaning the nibs, types of wood and surfaces, safety, how to transfer images, wood burning techniques along with examples of how to add texture and color. I like that the author, Rachel Strauss, lists several coloring mediums and recommends several brands. Furthermore, she has a list of wood finishes, such as cutting board oil, polyacrylic, resin, etc, in an easy to read and compare chart. Then it's helpful that she combines the different art mediums and applies the different finishes on top to illustrate the effects.
The second part of the book which has projects and inspiration is where she puts everything together from part one. There are various examples of wood surfaces, alternate surfaces like leather and canvas, and coloring mediums and how it would look in a finished project. The projects look interesting and the templates can be found online.
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for an advance copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Everything you need to know about the art of pyrography in one book. Some lovely things to make to start you on your way. Clear instruction and examples. I had to have a go. I used my soldering iron and a bit of scrap wood. I was so pleased with the results I have invested the equipment. It’s not at all expensive. I started with some cup coasters to learn the techniques. I now have a beautifully decorated wooden chopping board. I lovely way to personalise gifts.
This a great starter book for having a go at wood burning. It makes it really accessible for beginners and gives lots of step by step instructions and a variety of projects to try. I liked the way most of the projects were small and could be tackled in an afternoon, The illustrations are lovely and I enjoyed browsing through the book. The projects are easy to adapt and wood burning could be used to personalise and customise all sorts of things. This would make a lovely gift book too.
This book is super educational and interesting and I can't wait to apply it to my own way of burning. This was a book that gave me some advice for not having a background in the subject and was not overwhelming at all.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* interesting book, not the first book ive read on wood burning and this one had some really cool unique ideas! wouldn't mind owning this if i ever try out wood burning like i want lol
About ten years ago one of the mums from school had a wood burning tool and I spend one afternoon burning a pattern onto some wood. Very therapeutic it was too.
The book is divided into two sections:
- Tools & Techniques
- Projects & Inspirations
Tools and Techniques provides details on what equipment is required, plus details on how to transfer designs to your wood, then a section of how to do the process from start to finish. There are also details on how to add texture, colour and how to finish (seal/cure) your project.
Part two, contains 21 projects for you to try, not only on wood but also on other materials. There are projects on chopping boards, earrings, cork coasters, canvas and more. Each comes with step by step instructions, alongside colour photographs of those steps and the finished project.
There is certainly enough explanation contained within these pages to get your started in wood burning. It's certainly a hobby I'd like to explore in the future.
i received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
This is a short and basic book about the art of woodburning. It starts with information on safety, which is good, then goes over tools, techniques, ways to add colour and finishes. It mentions different material a pyrography tool can be used on besides wood, including canvas which was a surprise!
The book does provide patterns to follow, but there is a section on project ideas and it does tell how to transfer patterns. Anyone can Google graphic designs and line drawings that can work well.
It does go into how to add texture, but I didn't see a lot on using different line sizes to add shading and other expert techniques. I'd say this is one for the beginner.

Always on the lookout for a new project, I picked up a wood burning kit. I remember having one as a kid, but now I was looking for advanced crafting this time.
This book is a great reference tool. There is so much information that you will become proficient in wood burning.
Many examples of techniques were provided to show strokes of the different burning tips and how they come together to create an image. As your experience increases and you feel more comfortable to expand your knowledge you can create larger projects. Included are some templates that you will learn how to transfer to whatever type of surface you are using. You will also learn about adding color and bringing your art to life.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

An introductory guide to wood burn art. The author takes you through equipment and basic techniques, and then an array of small and large projects. Also of note are the artist spotlights throughout the book, showcasing women wood burners and their work. Lots of step-by-step instructions and photos to help you get started. Good for any crafty readers looking for a new medium to try.
The Wood Burn Book is a tutorial and project guide to pyrography by Rachel Strauss. Due out 18th Aug 2020 from Quarto on their Rockport imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in paperback format.
The book has a logical and easy to follow layout. The instructions presuppose no previous experience on the reader's part. The book begins with an introductory section which covers tools and supplies, safety and selection and leads into lots of mini tutorials which show how to transfer designs and achieve different effects with the pyrography pen, add color, finish designs and more.
Roughly the next half of the book contains the projects. They're attractive and look very professional. Each of the tutorials includes a finished project picture, tools and supplies, and step-by-step instructions. Tips and advice are highlighted in text bars in the tutorials to help readers avoid pitfalls and achieve the best results. Process photos are included in most of the tutorials and are clear and easy to follow. There are a number of different contributing artists whose projects provide a wide variety of aesthetics for the reader to choose from. There are no templates included in the book, but the projects show a number of creative methods of adapting stock pictures and designs to use.
Really lovely job. I think that an aspiring crafter could make most of these designs armed with this book and the necessary supplies and tools listed.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This book is fantastic!! I have always been interested in wood burning and this book covers everything! There are lots of intricate details but it is also set up in a way that is easy to read and intuitive for beginners to the craft. Strauss details specifics like types of woods and also has step by step pictures. The projects are all look interesting and are modern/current. Some craft books I have stumbled upon have dated looking projects, but hers give off a more rustic vibe, which is very hot right now. This book is an awesome choice if you want to learn more about wood burning or get some project ideas or if you are wanting to learn how to do it for the first time. Must read!
