The Last to See Her was a page turning, twisty book that you couldn't trust anyone, not even "her" who has disappeared! There were a few different twists and happenings that are out of the norm of the standard thriller we see these days, making this one feel more bingeable and fresh.
This book started strong and it kept me engaged for a while. I was invested in the story and it was fun figuring out the mystery culprit was. However I felt like there were a lot of empty holes in the story and many things were left unanswered. I still enjoyed the story but ultimately was disappointed with the direction of the book,
Thank you to NetGallery and to Harlequin Trade Publishing for giving me a copy for my honest review.
DNF - Did not finish. I did not connect with the writing style or plot and will not be finishing this title. Thank you, NetGalley and Publisher for the early copy!
This ARC was gifted to me by Net Galley and the publisher for an unbiased review,
This is a book where 2 sisters go on a trip to New York city and then everything goes wrong when one sister ends up missing and the other is the last one to see her alive and is now a suspect.
This book was okay, I wasn't a huge fan of any of the characters, they didn't seem realistic, from the undiagnosed mental illness from years and years ago to the unbelievable investigator. Realistically I cannot see how Meg is a renown physician because she isn't portrayed as a strong intelligent woman which I would expect for a physician.
This book was confusing and scattered I wasn't sure where the author was going with the story. I found there were many avenues that were opened but never went anywhere.
This wasn't a book I would recommend.
The book had me hooked! But then so much was going on that it made everything very unbelievable. I found myself rolling my eyes. I wish the characters had been more likable. It was a good read. Just not the best thing I’ve read.
A woman disappears into the dark city night...
Gen is on the verge of a divorce from her cheating husband. When her sister, Meg, has a convention to attend in the Big Apple, she invites Gen along to celebrate her newly found freedom. But the perfect sisters' getaway quickly goes awry when a tipsy Gen defiantly throws her wedding ring off the hotel room's balcony. Then, wanting some fresh air, she decides to take a late-evening walk alone and vanishes without a trace.
The investigation that follows uncovers secrets--and betrayals--between sisters and spouses that will twist the truth in on itself until nothing is clear.
What really happened to Gen and who, besides Meg, was the last to see her?

I really wanted to like this book. I'm always a fan of whodunnits and I thought this book would fit the build. Unfortunately I think that a lot of the good in this book got lost in the amount of twists and turns that happened. It also doesn't help that a good portion of the main leads are just unlikeable people.
Perhaps the hardest part for me was the fact that the "villian" was revealed so early on and the "justifications" that were used to explain why this character did what they did. I thought it could have been better crafted and probably more creative than blaming a disability. Knowing what happened so early on and the way the plot flipped back and forth for me ended up killing any interest I had in the story pretty well on.
Unfortunately I made it about half way before needing to DNF. I wish the thriller had been more thrilling and the plot points had been a little more thought out.
Thank you to Netgalley and Courtney Evan Tate for the advanced read of "The Last to See Her" in exchange for an honest review.
THE LAST TO SEE HER is one addictive read. Tate weaves together a tale of secrets, lies, and betrayals. Can you say...oh so good.
Wow. Okay. This book had A LOT happening in it. And unfortunately for me those things didn’t really make for a great book when thrown all together. I’m WAY over the woman is CRAZY or mentally I’ll as a plot line. And the secret sister was just a bit much. Overall didn’t care much for this one.
Not my favorite thriller, though it was a wild ride. It definitely kept me reading due to it's fast pace and intrigue, just not quite my cup of tea.
This was an interesting book. Sometimes a little slow, but did move along enough to keep my attention and cause a mild amount of intrigue.
Gen isn't having the best of luck at the moment. Her life is falling apart and her marriage is seemingly heading for divorce. When her sister reaches out it seems like a great chance to get away from everything. To use the time to clear her head and figure out her next step.
Meg takes her convention as a time to help her sister as well. Not knowing that the invitation will lead to secrets being uncovered and her sister missing.
Thought provoking and intriguing. Would definitely try more from this author.
The Last to See Her by Courtney Evan Tate is a thriller story. The format in this one is one that changes the point of view, mostly of that of the sisters, and also has flashes back to the past to help build the story.
Gen is about to get a divorce from her husband so when her sister, Meg, has a work trip scheduled to New York City Meg invites Gen to come along. The sisters arrive in NY and head out on the town to take Gen’s mind off of her problems and a few drinks are had.
After arriving back at the hotel both sisters are quite a bit tipsy but Gen is still stressed over her marriage and goes for a walk. Meg ends up falling asleep only to awaken to an empty room with Gen never having returned. Of course Meg brings the police in to find out just what happened to her sister that night in the city.
The Last to See Her is one of those stories that for me the characters weren’t particularly likable but I didn’t mind that as I became invested in their story. However, my lower rating for The Last to See Her was not because I wasn’t engaged in this story as I read it but because when finished I was left with questions. To me this book had a lot of holes left open during everything that happened that I just couldn’t find myself excited after finishing this one up. Due to those things I questioned I had to lower my rating for this one to two and a half stars.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
This book....what to even say? The story started out strong, with tension and suspense. Unfortunately, it lost its pace in the latter stages and then went completely off the rails. Gen and her sister, Meg. They have a getaway to NYC to celebrate Gen's impending divorce while Meg is supposed to be there for a prestigious medical conference. After having too much to drink Gen throws her engagement ring (4 carats!) off the building and then stumbles out for a walk. Meg, who is supposed to be a renowned physician doesn't think twice about her sister wondering off. Meg then passes out and her sister never came home. Although I found Meg's character to be lacking in believability, it got worse. The NYC detective is incapable of doing a thorough job and I wound up just not caring.
Definitely not for me.

Fast-paced mystery that I read straight through! Gin goes missing but her disappearance is more than it appears. Great for fans of suspenseful mysteries.
I am sorry for not reviewing fully but I don’t have the time to read this at the moment. I believe that it wouldn't benefit you as a publisher or your book if I only skimmed it and wrote a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for not fully reviewing!
SO I wasn’t too blown away by this domestic thriller. The characters felt meh and the plot had that typical, failed marriage, girl goes missing vibe. I still enjoyed the ride we went on though with the twists and turns, but It just wasn’t anything that took me by surprise. Pretty much the middle portion had me flipping through just to find the riveting moments.
I gave this one a 3 out of 5 stars. If you really love the domestic thriller genre, this one would be a decent weekend read. As for a spine-tingling, riveting story, I just didn’t find this one to fit in.
I had really high hopes for this one, as it sounded like everything I could have wanted.
The plot was fairly fast paced and I really liked the then/now way the story unfolded; however, there were a few holes and some things I wasn't able to suspend belief for. I wanted a lot more tension and while I was intrigued with the characters, I could have set this down unfinished.
**Huge thank to Mira Books for providing the arc free of charge**
This is 100% the tale of two books. I’m glad I stuck with it. The beginning of the book was much slower. There wasn’t a lot of action and what there was seemed formulaic and contrived in some parts. But then at halfway through, things picked up. I thought from about 50% to 80%, pretty much the middle third of the book, was excellent. Secrets were revealed, motivations were explained…and yet there were still misunderstandings. The end wasn’t as strong as the part preceding it. But that section alone makes the whole book worthwhile. For a full review, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. Thank you to Harlequin (MIRA) and NetGalley for a digital ARC of the book.
I love this Author. She can write no wrong.. Simply BRILLIANT. I highly recommend this unputdownable book. Run, do not walk, to get your hands on this!!!
Well, that didn't end the way I thought it would. I thought this would be a thriller that I had the big twist figured out within the first 100 pages but my theories were way off. This book was so interesting and gripping that I read it in less than 24 hours because I had to know what was going to happen next. I loved all of the backstory that we got in this book, that really helped shape the characters as they were in present day.
Thanks so much to Mira Books and NetGalley for the complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
Ohhhhhh man. I don’t even know where to begin. A late night walk turns into a disaster with non stop twists and absolutely no idea what’s going to happen. Highly entertaining and enjoyable. A must read for all thriller lovers.
