This is very much a me-book. Fan goes on date with actor, actor writing fanfiction, hijinks ensue? MADE FOR ME. Any books that explore fandom well is a perfect book for me. Spoiler Alert is one such title and is as fun and romantic and deserving of a national bestseller title. Go read it.
Nerdy and body-positive
As a GOT fan, I loved the inspiration for this book. I also liked the body positivity and learning so much about fanfic writing. However, the parental issues with both MCs were too much, and the lie of omission went on far too long. Also, the MCs read younger than their close to 40 ages, and where the length of the story could have been shortened.
This was fantastic. Why did I wait so long to read it??
I loved the representation and how the couple interacted and came together. I also listened to the audiobook and loved the narrators.
This was a great light read, but I will say that there was so much of a focus on the main character's weight that it was distracting at times.
I read this book forever ago after going through a major life crisis so it took me forever to give feedback. This book was so good! Loved the plus-size representation and it set me up to become a major Olivia Dade fan.
I loved this novel and the subtle nod it gave to Game of Thrones. Honestly this novel helped heal me after the show ended the way it did and I will forever be thankful to Olivia for writing it.
Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade
I read this a couple years ago and for some reason forgot to write down my thoughts. I loved the nerdiness and the heroine going out with the star of her fandom. Super, super cute idea. I loved the fanfic aspects and the cons and all the fangirling. I loved the sensitive, sweet nature of Marcus and April. What a wholesome, special romance. I just loved this, and now I want to re-read it since I've clearly forgotten bits of it! But the fact that it has stuck with me for years is such a good sign.
I wanted to like this...I really, really did. It seemed right up my alley as a former FF writer myself. In the end, it just felt too thin and weak.
Spoiler Alert is fan fiction come to life. I loved the premise of diversity (body and neuro) and fandom. I appreciated the care and nuance that was shown to adult dyslexia. I liked that the central characters were friends and morphed into a relationship. I enjoyed Marcus' vulnerability and character development. April's penchant for misinterpreting and overthinking situations became a chore, making her less likable. As writers, April and Marcus are wonderful communicators, but the story falters when they can't communicate effectively. Their coupledom is thinly developed and one-sided. The concept of body positivity loses steam due to the overuse of body-focused adjectives. The contradiction is a plot point meant to be overcome, but the narrative is clunky. The fanfic snippets also didn't mesh well with the main character arcs. Still, fans of light romance may enjoy this, and the sexy bits are hot, but seem out of step with the overall concept.
A story filled with fan fiction, actors still having identity issues, a battle with body image, love, secrets, and discovering what happens when you finally put it all out there.
Love yourself, accept yourself, and don't be afraid to share it with the world.
I super enjoyed this, especially all the fanfiction and fandom parts of it, and all the fun little "extras" before the beginning of the chapters.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for a review.
What an adorable romance. I loved April and how body positive she was. Marcus was a more complicated hero than I'm use to finding, and was pleasantly surprised. The fan fiction that brought them together was really cute, and it was definitely different than anything else I've ever read. I also appreciated that April knew her worth, and was finally able to stand up to her parents about their behavior, and helped Marcus do the same. Thanks to Netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Olivia Dade bursts onto the scene in this delightfully fun romantic comedy set in the world of fanfiction, in which a devoted fan goes on an unexpected date with her celebrity crush, who’s secretly posting fanfiction of his own.
Marcus Caster-Rupp has a secret. The world may know him as Aeneas, star of the biggest show on television, but fanfiction readers call him something else: Book!AeneasWouldNever. Marcus gets out his frustrations with the show through anonymous stories about the internet’s favorite couple, Aeneas and Lavinia. But if anyone discovered his online persona, he’d be finished in Hollywood.
April Whittier has secrets of her own. A hardcore Lavinia fan, she’s long hidden her fanfic and cosplay hobbies from her “real life”—but not anymore. When she dares to post her latest costume creation on Twitter, her plus-size take goes viral. And when Marcus asks her out to spite her internet critics, truth officially becomes stranger than fanfiction.
On their date, Marcus quickly realizes he wants more from April than a one-time publicity stunt. But when he discovers she’s Unapologetic Lavinia Stan, his closest fandom friend, he has one more huge secret to keep from her.
With love and Marcus’s career on the line, can the two of them stop hiding once and for all, or will a match made in fandom end up prematurely cancelled?
3.5 stars. This is your pretty standard romance - the characters weren’t necessarily blowing my mind but I was just charmed enough to keep reading. The stand out bits were the bits of fan fiction and scripts included between chapters. They just kept getting funnier and funnier, and I can’t wait to read Alex’s story - the side character and so much more lively than the two leads, though I did enjoy the way they tackled real world issues like fat shaming.
THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!! For fans of one to watch, this book was the body positive nerd's dream and I loved it!
This story was very well written and I enjoyed the talk of being a fat woman and how that doesn't make you less than anyone else. I found it eye opening and wonderful to see. The relationship between the 2 MCs was well done with them each helping each other to come into their own and be proud of themselves for who they are. I do think the miscommunication conflict between them was a bit drawn out at times and got a bit frustrating. And for me personally I am not sure that the fan fiction and GOT fandome vibes were up my alley which brought down my personal enjoyment, but for the right audience it would probably be incredible and extremely entertaining.
LOVE LOVE LOVE! This was the first 5-star read for me in 2021! I really enjoyed both April & Marcus as characters. I also loved the nuanced description of fandom and fandom culture throughout the book. There was a great emotional depth to the characters that made you want to root for them. It was SO SO GOOD! I am impatiently waiting for the next book by Olivia Dade. She is a must-buy for me!
Spoiler Alert was AMAZING and one of my favorite books of 2020. This book had absolutely everything I could want, a sweet but damaged hero, a plus size confident heroine, fan fiction, secret identities, humor and it was realistic. It was just perfect. I don’t want to give anything away but you need this book in your life, you will not be disappointed. I’m actually getting ready to re read it again before release day because it was that good. I highly recommended Spoiler Alert.
MY HEART!! I absolutely ADORED every single thing about this book!!! The fandom/fan fiction, the cosplay!! The opposite attracts! I related so hard to April in her over weight , geeky ways and my heart was so happy seeing her learn to love and accept herself!! Same with Marcus!! Marcus was so so caring and sweet and these two had so much chemistry!! I swear I smiled through 90% of this book!! Such a fun story but one that also has a deeper meaning with so many relatable layers, I connected with this one so hard. I cannot wait to gift this one to my fandom friends!! It’s perfect!!
