To Bargain With a Highland Buccaneer by Collette Cameron is the next in Cameron's Heart of A Scot series. Branwen Glanville is the ward of Keane Buchannan, Duke of Roxdale. She and his family: himself, his wife, and her two daughters were visiting the ruins of Holyrood Abbey, after which they planned an excursion to the docks and look at the ships in port. They would be accompanied by Bryston McPherson, a man who often visited her guardian. All of a sudden, they appeared to have unwelcome guests. After sending a message to Keane, he quickly shepherded her through the streets of the city, on the run from them. Through several minor adventures, they made it to his ship, where he gave orders to his men to set sail. Keane and the family were nowhere in sight. She was on this ship, un-chaperoned. She would be ruined.
This whole group of people has been a joy to get to know. This latest entry into the franchise brings us a lovely young woman, full of passion that, at this point, was unfulfilled. Byrston is a sophisticated man-of-the-world. The last thing he was looking for was romance. He had lost his wife several years earlier, in the worst possible way, and his heart had hardened toward women. The voyage with Branwen put a different complexion on things, although he was still not prepared to be in love. The journey to their happily-ever-after was fun-filled and exciting. It was a terrific read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recommend it.
I was invited to read an ARC of To Bargain With a Highland Buccaneer from Dragonblade, through Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own. #netgalley #tobargainwithahighlandbuccaneer
Wonderful conclusion to the series, but can be read as a stand alone. The story has well developed, likable characters. It has a plot with suspense, mystery, intrigue, and action on the high seas. It is worth your time and money to read the complete series.
In Search of Treasure
Can a man find more than one soulmate in a lifetime? It does not seem possible, but it is said that the heart can grow to hold more love. Bryston’s wife was killed by a brutal pirate, and he did not think he could love again. Forced to protect Branwen from his enemy, he finds himself losing his heart. Will he realize it before it is too late? After all, the pair are being chased by the same brutal pirate who murdered his wife.
I loved both the adventure and the romance in this book. Branwen and Bryston will take you on a journey of adventure, love, and discovery. Like with all of Collette’s book, this one has wit that will make you chuckle a time or two.
I have really enjoyed the series that Collette Cameron has written and the families that we have been introduced to. This is the last book in the series and a very enjoyable read. Branwen Glanville, is feeling a bit sad for herself, as her sister is away on her honeymoon. She and her guardian’s family are waiting for Bryston McPherson that is coming for a visit. Bryston McPherson was a former privateer and suddenly sees an old enemy he thought dead. This madman had killed Bryston’s young wife and he had promised himself he would kill him if he ever saw him. This sighting sets up a seafaring adventure for both Branwen and Bryston. Wonderful characters and a grand adventure.
So this is book 8 in the Heart of a Scot series and it was the first book by this author I have ever read. You do not have to read the previous books.
To Bargain with a Buccaneer is short and each book in the series are all less than 200 pages each so they are all a quick and easy read. Perfect to read in a comfy chair in the shade in the backyard.
I read this last night and I did enjoy it. I like the story and the main characters. It is entertaining.
I do recommend this.
I give this 4 out of 5.
Having met Branwen Glanville in a previous novel, I was pleased to have the opportunity of being able to read her story. Branwen has admired Bryston McPherson from afar for some years. As a young girl, she was initially terrified of the privateer, but as she matured she found herself becoming more and more attracted to him. Together with her family, Branwen is supposed to meet up with Bryston at the docks, but unexpected events have Branwen on the run together with Bryston, escaping a vicious madman. Their adventures take them into places that have Bryston dreading having to face Branwen's guardian, but he is surprised when she not only keeps up with him, she also takes their flight in her stride. Bryston is still suffering from grief after the death of his wife and thinks that he is beyond ever finding love again. However, when Branwen's life is threatened his protective feelings for her rear up and demand that he take notice of them. This adventure romance is fast-paced, witty, and exciting, keeping the reader in suspense right through to the end. Although fairly short, it is nevertheless well written and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this novel from NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
To Bargain with a Highland Buccaneer wasn't as good as I hoped, sadly. It was not my first *Scottish* romance, but I was lost in the language. The story seemed rushed, there was no dept in the characters. I managed to make it to the end, mostly because I wanted to see if it was going to get better. It did not happened,. Honestly, I don't think you should read it.
Former privateer and agent for the crown Bryston McPherson only wants one thing. Oblivion. A respite from the crushing grief and guilt he’s felt since his wife’s murder. But peace remains elusive. Until he meets her. The fiery Highlander is everything he never thought he’d have again—light, happiness, joy. Branwen Glanville craved excitement, but she got way more than she bargained for with Bryston. When a case of mistaken identity puts her in grave danger, the surly Scot spirits her away to his ship…and steals her heart in the process.
This is the eighth & final book in the series & what a page turning finale. I thought all my dreams had come true a Highland pirate, sorry privateer, who looks like a Viking with long blond hair, where's my fan! Yes I loved Bryston who gradually came to life again as he spent more time with Branwen. I also loved the feisty outspoken Branwen who fell so hard for the strapping Scot. The story was fast paced & I certainly got caught up in all the action & read the book in a sitting. Another very well written engrossing, captivating read, I've loved the whole series & this was one of my favourites
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
A quick read.
Dialogue in Scottish brogue.
Likeable characters. Touch base a little with previous characters.
To Bargain with a Highland Buccaneer in the eighth book in a series, but it’s the first I’ve read from this author. The book is short and quick. The action begins almost right away with a bunch of exposition squeezed in so new readers like me don’t feel lost.
The plot is rushed, we need to fit a lot in after all, with little thought given to the logic of the plot device that lands our pairing in close proximity. Doesn’t matter, onwards!
Despite myself, I enjoyed the central tension of the romantic storyline: basically can our hero love again. The surrounding plot was less interesting to me. It was something about a mad pirate who wanted to hurt the heroine for little discernible reason I could see. He, the pirate, assumed the two main characters were romantically involved. He killed the hero’s wife in a bit for some treasure. Anyhow, no worries why, the heroine is in mortal danger. Will he open his heart back up to love? Onwards!
There were a few nice touches. The way the heroine lifts her face to the sea’s spray told our hero she belonged with him on the sea. His previous wife didn’t lift her face to the spray, she was too busy throwing up from seasickness. There I go making fun, I shouldn’t really. This is light fare, it’s quick and satisfying despite itself.
I received an ARC.
I think this book was a great addition to the series, but sad as it is also the final book of the series. I liked the main characters from previous books and was thrilled to read Bryston and Branwen's story. Collette Cameron is great with developing characters, describing them in detail, and keeping with their personalities. I knew these two would end up on an adventure and Collette did not disappoint. My only complain about the book is that I wish it was longer. The story feels complete and the epilogue was nice, but I will miss this this series. I will definitely reread this series again soon.
Collette is one of my favorite authors and I am never disappointed in her books.
I left this review on Bookbub, Amazon, and Goodreads.
Will their journey heal his heart and open it to a new love ...
While this one is the last in a series, I only read the previous book. But it does not impede the reading of this book, it can perfectly be appreciated as a standalone.
This book was a nice road movie, even if little part of the story is set on the sea.
I liked both main characters, Branwen is not shirking violet. When things turned awry, she is no one to weep or lament, she follows the flow and faces every trials head held high. She also knows what she innerly wants, she won’t compromise.
While Bryston might concede to his own oath, as despite his pledge to his late wife to never love again, he considers after his time spend in Branwen’s company, she could be a good spouse if amenable to his lack of love, even if he would never open his heart again.
This is a fast paced story as they are on the run, in a quest to outsmart the villain behind their flight. Along the course of their journey, sentiments are revealed, but will circumstances allow them full rein.
A sweet tale of a second chance at love, 4.5 stars.
I was granted an advance copy by the publisher Dragonblade Publishing, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
I recieved a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. To Bargain with Highland Buccaneer is a short novella that is quick and fun read. Like all novellas there isn't a lot to unpack and there is instalove. Bryston is titular Highland Buccaneer who must protect Branwen when his enemies believe that she is his and want to harm her in order to find out he location of a treasure. Bryston vowed never to love after he failed to protect his first wife but Branwen is nothing like her and charms him instantly. The book is relatively fast pace and because it is a novella it is shallow, however like I said it is enjoyable. I would be open to checking out this author again.
2.5 - 3 stars. This arc was provided to me by the publisher and all thoughts and opinions are my own,
Although To Bargain With a Highland Buccaneer is the 8th book in this series, like most historical romance books each book features its own couple and can be read on its own. I loved the Highland setting of this book combined with a pirate adventure, I thought it was a very unique twist on the other Highlander romances I've read. You can also tell the author did a lot of research on making sure the events she describes are as historically accurate as possible. However, I do prefer the language to be slightly more modern in my historical romances, sometimes it felt a bit overdone here. I also felt a bit uncomfortable with the way island life was described, like something purely 'exotic' and continuously emphasizing how savage their lives were compared to the Scots. Overall this was a fun and quick read though!
To Bargain with a Highland Buccaneer by Collette Cameron
A light hearted romance that is a quick read! It’s not one of her best ones, but it will keep your interest.
Branwen is a ward of the Duke of Roxdale because her parents who were seafarers were lost at sea. Bryston was a Privateer for the Queen, but gave it up to be one of the Dukes soldiers. Nobody knows why he gave up the sea. But, Branwen always had a secret longing for the sea and Bryston!
An old enemy came back into the picture and threatened the life of Branwen and naturally Bryston is the one who steps in to save the day and whisk her away on to his ship that he never gave up.
You need to read the book to find out what escapades that take place as they try to allude this arch rival and there are many!!! Some are quite endearing and swashbuckling adventurous!!!
This was an enjoyable quick read and the perfect ending to the series. It's always a joy to read any of Collette Cameron's books:)
On the hunt for the pirate who tortured and killed his wife 5 years earlier, Bryston must also protect
Branwen, his friend's ward, and ends up having to take her on his ship. It doesn't take long before Branwen falls in love with Bryston but she feels it's hopeless unless he can finally overcome his grief for his dead wife and learn to love and live again. Amidst the danger, passions flare and Branwen gets the adventure she craved for!!
I was given an ARC of this book via NetGallely and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Branwen Glanville is daydreaming her way through an outing with her guardian and his family. Since her sister is away on honeymoon she's been feeling restless, but today something is making her anxious.
Former privateer Bryston McPherson is on his way to see an old friend when he's confronted with the sight of an enemy he thought long dead. The vicious madman who killed his wife.
Our heroine is a brave Highland lass who has an over protective guardian. Their lives haven't always been as peaceful as they are now.
Our hero gave up spending so much time at sea a few years ago but still owns his ship. That and his crew are necessary for this dangerous adventure.
An exciting action packed story that rounds off a wonderful series. Each book in the series can be read on it's own, but it's fun to follow the families.
Great fun.
I recieved an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley. This did not affect my review and all opinions are my own.
Bryston McPherson is being hunted by a pirate, who believes he knows where hidden treasure is, and Le Savauge is going to stop at nothing to catch him and the woman he believes Bryston loves. Branwyn Glanville is swept up into this, and ends up sailing the seas with Bryston until they can end up solving the mystery of the treasure and love.
This book was okay. It wasn't the best book or the worst one either. It seemed a little rushed, and the pacing felt off almost like the author was in a hurry to finish. I wish there had been more banter and flirting between the two. They never teased or did much talking, and because of that I didn't feel the chemistry. I was suprised when they were in love because I just never felt like they had any real "aha" moments.
I loved the treasure plot and being chased by a pirate (although, I wish they really had found some treasure). I loved Abbie (she was full of life), and wish she was around more of the book. It was a very well-written slow burn. I just wish there had been more sexual tension.
Bryston McPherson has never gotten over his wife’s murder. All he wishes is to have some sense of happiness. When he meets Branwen Glanville, a glimmer of light is there for him, yet his sole purpose is to keep her safe from a vengeful pirate. Branwen hopes that Bryston can show her his true feelings and put his past behind him.
Both Branwen and Bryston make for two likeable main characters. Their dialogue and interactions are witty and engaging. Yet the time spent together didn’t quite equate to the feelings expressed, particularly with the quick change of heart by Branwen. Whilst his love for his former wife is essential to this story, at times, the continuous reference to her, detracted from Branwen and Bryston’s romance. I was very entertained by it and both Branwen and Bryston were likeable characters.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
A heroine, Branwen, who doesn’t need to marry and a hero, Bryston, who does not want to marry are thrown together when an old enemy comes after him. Branwen falls in love, but is not sure if Bryston can commit to her. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
