This sneak-peak dives immediately into the luscious worldbuilding of this novel. War Girls is a futuristic reimagining of the Biafra-Nigerian civil war The descriptions of the technology (reminiscent of Black Panther's Wakanda) is very unique compared to other sci-fi YA stories. It's sharp and feels very real.
The writing style is vivid and really makes the characters come alive. We follow Onyi, who is in a group of former child soldiers that oversee the refugees from the civil war, and Ify, her adoptive sister. I always love a good sibling story, and their bond established in these first few chapters really has me craving for more!
This sample proved to be a very strong start, I'm very excited to read the full book!

This sampler of War Girls by Tochi Onyebuchi definitely leaves you wanting more! The cover is stunning, and the synopsis of the book is incredibly intriguing, original, and complex. I really enjoyed reading this sampler and will be interested to see where the story leads. The futuristic world and characters Tochi Onyebuchi has created are very interesting and multi-dimensional. I need to know what happens next!

I really enjoyed this sampler. The world is very interesting as well as the main characters. My favorite character so far is Ify. I loved hearing about her and her accent. And the android Enyemaka! I'll definitely be picking up the full book to continue the story. I need to know what happens next!

I definitely plan to buy a finished copy of War Girls so that I can see how the story ends! I loved reading Onyii's and Ify's points of view and I found both characters compelling and relatable. All in all, I really enjoyed this chapter sampler. I thought the pace was addictive and I'm dying to see where the story will go next.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a chapter sampler in exchange for an honest review.

This book had me hooked from the first sentence. I fell in love with the main character almost immediately - her determination and strength at such a young age, and her feelings of protectiveness towards her sister captivate throughout the whole book. The premise for this story is so fresh and sorely needed in this genre and I cannot wait to read the sequel.

The relationship between Onyii and Ify was beautifully written - their forced separation and story of having to survive apart reminds me so much of The Color Purple, just add a steampunk Civil War, prosthetic limbs, badassery. War Girls even has some wlw rep!

I thoroughly enjoyed the worldbuilding in this book and was so happy to read some good non-Eurocentric science fiction/fantasy. My only nitpick might be the pacing in some parts, but overall I highly recommend this if you're looking for a fun, edgy, refreshing take on a steampunk scifi coming-of-age story.

HI! In the current political climate, this book promises to be an illuminating read. Based on the excerpt I received (via netgalley) it highlights some of the much needed information of racism. The setting is brilliant and the technology is quite inventive. Onyebuchi is an excellent author and effectively gets his message across through speculative fiction. Riot Baby was a well-written book and I can see how his style flows from that one to this work quite seamlessly.

However, if I have access to the full book, I would be able to make a more concrete decision of adoption and also be better equipped to provide a full review.

I only got a sample of this one, but I'm giving it 3 stars because even in the small sample that I got I had a difficult time connecting with the characters and there wasn't a whole lot of world building. I would still put it in my classroom library though because it might be something that would appeal to my students.

So I did not realize that this was just an excerpt so I feel like it is hard to make a fully formed opinion on just a sample of work. That said, what I did read of it was interesting and engaging. This seems like a book that I would love! I shall have to keep an eye out for it when it publishes.

This was a sample and it ended at the perfect spot. I love the characters so far and how tech heavy this is/going to be. I have already made a purchase for the full book. Looking forward to completing that.

I wasn't aware that this was a sneak peek, but I really enjoyed what I read! War Girls is a futuristic sci-fi that takes place in Nigeria and I was so intrigued by everything that was going on. I also liked the writing style; Onyebuchi makes present/third work, which is really rare, and Onyii seems like such an interesting character. Also. That cliffhanger??? I will definitely be getting the full book once I can get my hands on it!

I've read one of Tochi Onyebuchi's other books and I think the premises for his novels are always really interesting, however his writing style is something I struggle with. Unfortunately this novel sounded really intriguing and had a beautiful cover but the writing style and the characters just didn't work for me.

I got to read the first four chapters of War Girls thanks to NetGalley, and I am very excited to finish! Tochi Onyebuchi has crafted a dystopian sci-fi based in a very real conflict: the Nigeria/Biafra conflict from the 1960s. I am not very familiar with this war, and Onyebuchi's treatment of it has made me want to read more. I will definitely be picking up War Girls in its entirety very soon.

I was impressed by the premise and intrigued by this book, but I can't offer a full review on a sneak peek. Our site's policy is to read the full work before reviewing, but I wish you all the best with this book. It definitely had my interest.

**sneak peak review**

This was a short little preview into the start of War Girls and from what I read so far I am intruiged and would definetly love to continue, with hints at a badass mechanical whizz, a potenial sapphic romance and set against a backdrop of war torn Nigera in the future I loved what I read so far.

The preview also left on a bit of a cliffhanger so I'm super interested to find out what happens next!

*Thank you to Netgalley and Razorbill for providing a sampler arc free of charge for review.*

It’s hard to summarize what this book is about as it’s only the first 4 chapters without copying the synopsis. Based on that information alone this book is about sisters living in Nigeria in the far future post apocalypse during a civil war. Onyii is a War Girl with a mechanical arm and her younger sister Ify is a student who if too smart for the people around her.

This sampling is mainly just setting up who the sisters are and letting you know the setting of the story. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I wasn’t super invested as it’s such a small part of the book but I’m going to purchase the audiobook to finish out the story as the concept is interesting.

This is an incredibly good start to a story - we learn about the characters and the world without it feeling like info-dumping. The writing feels smooth, and the world-building exciting. I will definitely be picking this series up in the future, I think it will be a great read.
