Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book! I was so excited to get approved for Think like a Monk and my sincerest apologies for the late review!
I took my time reading this story to fully understand and appreciate the story. Becoming a Monk and learning all the teachings was a brave and courageous step for Shetty and he was able to pursue the life he didn't know he needed.
I loved the flow of the book and it's filled with so much wisdom and insights. This is definitely a book I'll be going back to again.
Highly recommend this book!
I have read a few self-help books before and Think Like a Monk encompasses all of the good juicy bits in self-improvement to find that inner peace within. Jay Shetty has done a fantastic job of accumulating understandable advice that can be carried throughout my life. Thank you NetGalley for the copy.
Thank you to Netgalley, Jay Shetty and Simon & Schuster for a copy of Jay Shetty's latest book! I have been following Jay Shetty on Social media for a while now and was thrilled to have the chance to critically review it.
Reading this book felt a little like a summary or rather a book version of what you might have already heard or seen on Jay Shetty's Social Media and Podcasts. Nonetheless it's packed with wisdom and feels enlightening and empowering reading it. I loved the practical take aways in the book, that you can apply when done reading.
I feel like it'll be a great book for someone getting into self-help books or has not heard of Jay Shetty. But for those who already follow him it might seem repetitive. 3.5 for this :)
I absolutely love Jay Shetty podcasts and Instagram posts. It’s no surprise that I absolutely loved this book! I highly recommend reading this book.
“Your identity is a mirror covered with dust. When you first look in the mirror, the truth of who you are and what you value is obscured. Clearing it may not be pleasant, but only when that dust is gone can you see your true reflection.”
What a well written, simple and beautiful book!
I was a little familiar with Jay Shetty through his social media account and yet, since I had only heard bits and pieces of his words here and there, I hadn’t realized how healing his words and advises until I read this book. It was everything I expected and more.
If I was to sum up the book, I’d say it’s like having Jay Shetty as your personal coach in the beginning of your self-care journey. The book is full of great things from meditation to finding purpose in life. His message in this book is very uplifting and positive and I highly recommend it!
Thank you NetGalley and Jay Shetty for this copy!
Note: I am writing this review without having finished the book.
I am a fiction reader and very rarely do a read non-fiction. I picked up Think Like a Monk because I have a friend who really enjoys Jay Shetty on social media. Also, like most people these last few months of Covid haven't been easy for me.
I began reading Think Like a Monk as I do all books - flipping pages and reading chapter after chapter in one sitting. Until one day I realized I might not be absorbing some of the wisdom Shetty was imparting. I decided to slow down my reading. Going back and rereading chapters. Really thinking about what was being said and how I could apply some of his messages in my daily life. This is why I haven't finished the book. Yet.
I wanted to share my review now though because his book is being released this week. The book is easy to read and applicable to I would say almost everyone. This book is written pre-covid but I'm wondering if as I read on there may be an after word or last chapter that references the times we are going through.
I have never tried meditation and I'm not quite sure it's for me. But I have tried a breathing exercise that Shetty walks us through and I did find it calming. Also, my kids broke into an argument as I was reading that if you think/say a negative comment about someone follow it with 10 positive. I quickly put that into practice in the middle of the fight. Although it didn't work exactly as planned, it did end the argument and had them both forgetting their argument and looking at me like 'really Mom?!?'.
Haven't heard of Jay Shetty? He studied business in University in England. While all his classmates were going to parties and getting jobs in big businesses, Jay was taking every spare moment and spending it in a monastery. When school ended he spent 3 years as a Monk. Now he his a motivational speaker appearing on tv talk shows. This is his first book.
Although I don't believe Jay Shetty planned the timing of his book I do believe it could be a lifeline for those struggling with life right now. Think Like a Monk may not have all the answers but a few strategies that may help. My advise - don't power through this book. Take your time. Also, check out Jay Shetty on Instagram for ongoing interviews and words of wisdom.
It may seem counterintuitive to pick up a book imploring you to "Think Like A Monk" by a man who, self-admittedly, failed as a monk, but I am here to tell you that Jay Shetty's journey, tools and ability to translate for a modern world can be absolutely life-changing. If THAT is what a failure is? I need to get out and fail some more. A little bit memoir, a lotta bit secular insight into the world of Hinduism and Buddhism, Shetty manages to straddle the boundaries of worlds, tradition and eras as he walks his own way through what it means to live, and live well. He carefully reveals the truths that we all come up against in our daily lives and how to address these truths with compassionate awareness and ego-free boldness required discover our own Dharma- passionate purpose in life.
Each chapter includes concise, practical applications for everyone, no matter what type of person you are, a veteran meditator or someone who had never before considered meditation. Someone practicing mindfulness every day or someone just making it through every day. He brings these philosophies to you, whether you are a student, a mother, a businessman, a YouTube streamer, an alcoholic, a survivor, a nurse. He introduces ways to begin change NOW and gives you the science to back it up.
In a time of the global trauma of Covid-19, the message of peace, compassion, community, kindness, service, suffering, impermanence and ego are so vitally important. Many of us find ourselves in a great deal of pain, overwhelmed, unsure of what the future holds, unsure of the next step. I can't think of a better beginner's manual than Think Like A Monk to remind us that, in the words of Pema Chodron: "You are the sky, everything else - it's just the weather."
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to read and review this title. I was provided a free pre-publication copy of "Think Like a Monk" by Jay Shetty through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
First off, thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC. I’ve listened to Jay before, his podcast is engaging and he’s very easy to listen to. I was excited to get this book and I can say that while it’s follows the same knowledge of a lot of other self help books, it breaks down things differently. There is a lot to take from “Thinking like a Monk”, from being present in life, for showing gratitude, to slowing down and living your best life. This is (for me) one of those books that I would highlight chapters or passages to look back on when I need a reminder to meditate, or be at one with myself. I’m not religious, but I can absolutely get behind the spiritual aspect of this book. If you’re a fan of Jay’s work, add this to your list.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced digital copy. I have been a fan of Jay's for sometime. I dove right in and was pleased to devour it. Most of the points and story are from his various forms of social media. Many of the points made in the book you can easily find in his podcasts. Nevertheless, it was all in one place and easy to understand. It certainly is a great book full of wisdom one can implement into their lives.
