The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian #1: The Fuzz Apocalypse by Jonathan Messinger is okay. As an educator, I might put the book in the my classroom library, as I'm sure that it will be a stand out for some students. I felt that I was missing information in the book because I had not listened to the podcast, which makes me hesitant to recommend it to students.
Great beginning to a fun new space-themed fiction series. It's a nice early chapter book level that incorporates a few black and while illustrations throughout the book, helping to ease reluctant or young readers into longer books. Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the chance to read and review this ARC.
Logan D 9 y/0 and Richard S. 7 y/o reviewed The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian #1: The Fuzz Apocolypse in episode 11 of their Hey I Gotta New Book Podcast.
8 year old Finn Caspian is the first kid born in space in this new book by Jonathan Messinger which takes us on this interstellar mission following Troop #301. From visiting 2 planets on the verge of destruction to combatting the "Death Bunny" and battling the evil alien, Doug, who uses telepathy to communicate, the Team must continue on their mission of seeking out a new planet for humans to live on.
Richard liked the fact that he had something in common with our heroes in that he is apart of a Troop just like our explorers. He also laughed a great deal in Chapter 6 because "it's full of ways to explode".
Logan, found humor as well when Foggy, Finn's robot, was watching tv.
Overall the the boys enjoyed the book, but did say it was not one they would want to read again.
This was cute! I've never listened to the podcast this is based on, but I love the concept. I wish the beginning had a little more context, as it jumps into the action pretty immediately...but I imagine that's totally fine if you've listened to the podcasts and are familiar with the characters. Overall- funny, fast action, and cute illustrations. I definitely have some kids who will enjoy this!
I have been listening to the Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian podcast with my own kids for years ,and I was THRILLED to see that books are finally being made from these stories. Thank you Net Galley for the digital copy. I loved the new adventure that was written for Finn and his friends in this first book. I turned to my husband at one point and commented on how the humor/silliness from the podcast resonated in the book. Loved it! I cannot wait to share these with my students. I have already introduced some of my first grade students to the podcast and they enjoyed Finn's story. It is not always easy for them to access podcasts as I work in a Title I school so I am excited that they will be able to engage with these awesome characters in book form. These will definitely be on my school library's shelves the moment they come out!
