I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This cover made me immediately want to request the book. So appealing. I love the illustration style. This is a cute book with a great message.
I absolutely loved the illustrations in this book! I read this book to my 5 year olds and they both really liked, enough so that they asked for it again. I used it as a springboard to talk about recycling and just overall using less single use use items.
Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties with my computer and with Adobe Reader, I was unable to access my previously downloaded copy of this book before it archived, and I am unable to provide a proper review.
I was looking forward to reading and reviewing this book because it talks about plastic pollution, and I think that it is important to teach kids about the environment at a young age, so they can make good choices their entire lives.
I will likely purchase a copy of this book for my niece once she is slightly older, and able to understand stories better.
I sincerely apologize for not being able to provide a proper review for this title.
This is an adorable story about fishing and wanting to catch food, but ending up catching trash instead. I love recycling books and this one definitely did not disappoint. The illustrations are beautiful and done in soft colors, and the narration really draws in the reader.
Fisherman Finn and his dog Skip try to go out fishing one day but find nothing but trash! This is a great book for little ones to learn the impact of trash in our oceans.
I really enjoyed this book! I love recommending books about the environment to my library. I think it's important for children to learn how to be responsible about things that can harm our planet! The illustrations are perfect as well.
Fish by Brendan Kearney is a story about a fisherman named Finn who can't catch any fish. Towards the end of the story, Finn finds out that he didn't catch any fish because the trash in the ocean is killing all the fish. He then tries to do his part by cleaning up the beach and recycling all that he can.
While I loved the beginning of this book, the end seemed like it was very wordy and preachy. I love the idea of how Finn found out about the ocean and why he wasn't able to catch any fish; however, I think it could have been done in a slightly better way. The beginning of the book didn't have a lot of text on each page, but when it started talking about how the fish were dying and how to recycle, it seemed to be a little too text-heavy.
That being said, I still think this was a great book and is very informative. If you are looking for a book to introduce how to recycle and why it is important, I would suggest this book. I think Fish is geared more towards 6 to 8. While a younger child might enjoy it too, I believe the information-heavy part towards the end of the book might lose a younger child's interest. That being said, all children have different reading levels and enjoy different books, so I would base it off of your own child's reading skills.
Finn tries to catch fish with his buddy skip. Skip is a dog by the way. But after being on the ocean all day they realize there is nothing to catch. This book introduces children to the idea of pollution and littering in the ocean. It shows the adverse effects of plastic in the sea and rivers. Beautiful illustrations as well!
I loved the illustrations. However, the story got a little preachy. I wouldn't mind that if this book is in the nonfiction section. It doesn't belong in the picture book section. Overall, I enjoyed the message, but it wasn't my favorite.
Beautifully illustrated, a book about a fisherman and his dog; and how they discover the pollution in their ocean. It takes a village to help fix this problem, and all their hard work pays off.
Hoping to acquire this book as an Earth Day storytime book - My birthday so I'm a bit biased on eco-friendly books. Especially ocean books.
The illustrations in this title hooked me immediately. The colors are absolutely stunning and the softness and serenity of the old man and his pup headed out fishing is one of the most soothing images. In stark contrast are the extreme colors and clutter of the litter filled waters hindering their adventures.
A gentle tale encouraging mindfulness about how we treat our planet and what we do to reduce, reuse and recycle products to keep them out of our water sources, Fish brings to light the dangers of pollution and waste like microplastics and its effects on our ecology. I wasnt thrilled to have to explain "suffocation" of animals to my 4 year old, however, reality is reality, and I would rather he recognize the risks of carelessness than end up confronting such a problem in the wild. Or worse yet, grow in a world where the wildlife is endangered due to carelessness.
This is a beautiful little title and an important introduction for young to middle elementary readers about the risks of pollution and the need to reduce, reuse and recycle. Perfect for school and homeschool lesson supplementation.
I very much appreciate the opportunity to read and review this title. I was provided with a free pre-publication copy through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great book and a great lesson on keeping oceans clean. A man rows out to fish, but catches nothing but plastic. The beach cleaners help him learn what to do with all that plastic and even how to do things differently so he doesn't continue to create plastic waste. This book was well written and the illustrations are lovely.
The illustration are great, but the story is lacking. I love the color palette and detailed backgrounds, but there are other books that have a better delivery of the same message.
The message and illustrations in this picture book are lovely, and I enjoyed the story. It does feel a little bit wordy and preachy at times, in an effort to get all the information to kids. I would have preferred trimming some of the info and keeping more of the theme and ultimate point, which was great.
Note that I tried several times to review this on Goodreads and could not find it even when searching the author's list of books. Since it has not been published yet I was unable to review it on sites like Amazon either.
This is a really charming picture book about sustainability and the magic of the oceans. Great for kids to learn about how to protect the environment with some excellent illustrations and a charming fisherman and dog.
Fish is a great book to teach kids about the environment. The story is educational while be entertaining. Its a great book to use while teaching kids about recycling and how trash ends up in the oceans.
A beautifully illustrated book with a timely message about protecting our oceans, recycling, and keeping the world clean. The pictures are truly what captured me with this book, highly detailed and whimsical. The message is also incredibly important but I don’t think it was a seamless transition from “this is a story about a fisherman” to “here’s ways to help the ocean”.
Author Brendan Kearney’s little bio at the back of the book says that he lives by the sea in South West England where he is “constantly reminded of the threats that our oceans face, pollution being just one of them. He hopes that his book might cause us to think twice about the amount of rubbish we throw away and what we can do to reduce our own waste.” His book Fish does this successfully.
Fish starts off feeling like it’s just going to be a cute, well illustrated story about a man called Finn and his companion dog, Skip, getting up in the wee hours to go fishing from his wooden boat. But things take a serious turn and the book looks at pollution in the ocean and coastal environment, and goes over some things that people can do to help like reducing waste through reuse, repair and recycling, and trying to use reusable products.
This book is lovely to look at and a cute and sensible way to trigger the environmentalist instinct in young readers – and maybe some of the grownups in their lives, too.
I read a digital proof of Fish via NetGalley and the publisher. This review is unpaid and voluntary.
I really liked the story along with the lessons in this book. I liked the illustrations and I loved how they talked about doing our part to clean up our oceans and making the world a beautiful place for more and more generations to come.
Thank you NetGalley for this lovely ARC!
A cute and charming story about a man, his dog, and their quest to fish. I thought that this was a charming book on recycling and how to help keep the oceans clean. It was cleverly told through the perspective of a fisherman going fishing and finding only rubbish and wondering what happened to the fish. I think it would be a great book to read to kids and teach them about the dangers of garbage in the ocean and how they can help by recycling!
