The Wife’s House is a twisty mystery with plenty of surprises and well written characters. I devoured it in three days, unable to put it down or work out what was going on!
I must confess that I love thrillers featuring an unusual house, and this book ticks that box. I would be thrilled to live at Cliffside, a modern and starkly beautiful home set into a cliff, looking out at the waves. Richmonde’s descriptions of the coast are gorgeous, and the protagonist’s longing to experience the sea and feel alive is visceral and rings true. I also related strongly to her cravings for marmite on toast.
The heroine’s grief is well portrayed, and Richmonde manages to capture both the loneliness of grief, and the irritation with people who offer you company, but aren’t the one person you are missing. There are some lovely similes dotted throughout which aren’t over explained but stand on their own merits.
We never learn the name of the main character, and both this and some excellent writing allowed me to inhabit her for the story. I found myself constantly agreeing with her, finding certain characters annoying or intriguing as she did, and wanting to protect her from harm. There are strong Rebecca undercurrents here, and that’s likely a big reason I had such a great time reading!
The progression of the plot is not as slow as it needs to be to feel entirely realistic, especially in the set up, but if you can suspend your disbelief, the story itself is worth it. The wrap up is very neat, perhaps a little too neat, but I must say it’s satisfying to see everything explained and well thought out. There are no plot holes here!
As you read, you have all the clues you need to figure out what’s going on, although I didn’t! I was distracted at each turn by the peril the main character was in. Richmonde succeeded at continually turning the tables just as I thought I was getting a handle on what was happening.
I rated The Wife’s House 4.25 stars and would recommend it to anyone craving a snappy thriller set by the sea. Content warnings for Graphic Addiction, Alcoholism, Bullying, Emotional abuse, and Grief. Moderate Cancer, Confinement, Cursing, Death, Drug abuse, and Car accident. Minor Infidelity, Physical abuse, Vomit, Dementia, and Murder. Suitable for 15+. I’m grateful to the author, Bookouture and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for a review.
This was a page turning thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters were great.
I received a copy of this from Netgalley in exchange for fair and honest review.
This one took me a long time to get through. The beginning is very slow, and I just wasn't engaged. I repeatedly put it down in favor of faster-paced titles.
However, I pushed through to be able to post a review on NetGalley, and I'm glad I did!
The ending was extremely good, and worth the slow start! I don't want to spoil it, but if you're thinking of putting this one down it is worth finishing. All the loose ends get tied up in a satisfying way, and I will admit I was fooled a few times.
I loved the imagery of coastal California. The author did a great job of describing the setting!
This was certainly a book full of twists and turns that had me gripped right from the start.
The story was atmospheric and full of suspense, and you really get a sense of the paranoia in which the wife fights against throughout the book.
Brilliantly written, perfectly paced and full of twists and turns you don't expect. A must read for all fans of psychological thrillers.
I despised EVERY single character in this book. No joke. I struggled through this book because of that.
Great read. Really enjoyed the storyline and characters. Starts off a little slow but soon gets down to it. Would definitely recommend!
this book moves at a great pace. Lots of characters to keep you on your toes. Lots of twists and turns. The story evokes alot of emotions in you. The book can be best described as a rollercoaster. This book had everything I like in a thriller.
Without giving away any spoilers, there are so many twists and turns in this story at times it can be hard to keep up. We begin with little to information about the widow (who remains nameless) apart from that her husband died. Sinister things keep happening to her, she spots a drone circling her house, a weird note telling her she’s being watched. Who is watching her and why?
The first half of the book is scene-setting, introduction to Cliffside which is the central part of the plot. The widow strikes up an unlikely friendship with a set of triplets who turn up at her house unexpectedly. From there, she becomes intertwined with the triplets. Naively, she invites them to live with her as they reveal their dad died at a young age, and their mum is fighting terminal cancer in another country.
We start to become suspicious of how her husband died, what he was involved in and what the triplet's intentions are. It soon spirals out of control and no one can be trusted.
Several plot twists were transparent and felt like an attempt to buy time, but overall a book I couldn’t put down. The ending caught me off guard there’s no cliff hanger moment where you’re left questioning everything. It wraps up a bit too easily for my liking, but I admit when it comes to thrillers, I am hard to please.
A solid, gripping thriller that I highly recommend to anyone who needs some mystery in their life.
A widow living in a glass mansion by the sea is the setting for a creepy thriller in The Wife's House. The characters in this book have many secrets, some more harmful than others, but the result is a twisted page-turner that will keep readers up at night.
The widow who lives at the house is lonely. Her husband died about six months ago and they didn't have children. She is a Brit living in California and doesn't have any close family. She wanders the property, drinking way too much, and reminisces about her life before her husband died. You read about this life in snippets of her memories.
One morning three young people, one boy and two girls, are roaming in her wooded area. They are triplets and used to live in the house before her husband bought it for her. She quickly decides to welcome them into the house - it used to be theirs - but realizes that she doesn't know these people. As they make themselves at home in her house, she starts to feel some caution in her welcome. They are good kids, right? They can help dispel her loneliness and give her the company she craves, right? Maybe not.
The widow should be scared in her big lonely house. There are threats everywhere she turns. But who is the real threat and who is sending her scary notes that remind her that someone is watching her? Readers may be surprised at who the good people are and who are the bad in this book.
I enjoyed this book, but recognize that there may just be too many secrets and the loose ends tie up just a bit too neatly. It was a good story that will keep readers up at night.
Cliffside is a stunning house on the outside. Sleek and gorgeous, the Widow is lonely. She then invites basically strangers to stay with her. From then on it takes off at breakneck speed and doesn't stop. Full of twists and turns it will leave you breathless right to the very end!
Well written, and atmospheric. The Wife's House is a creepy, fast-paced thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. Just when you think you know what's happening, you don't.
Wow I loved this book! I haven't read any other books by this author but I shall be doing so now. Eek I love discovering new authors!
The blurb reads 'The moment my husband showed me Cliffside—a sleek and modern glass home perched on the edge of the jagged Big Sur clifftops—I fell in love. And right there and then I made a pact with myself. I am never leaving this house.
But when my husband was killed on the perilous roads leading up to the house, weeks after we moved in, I had a decision to make—leave the home I love and start a new life or stay and shut myself off from the world? I am never leaving this house.
The plot was great and well written, with plenty of twists and surprises. An atmospheric book which makes you feel the paranoia experienced by 'the wife' throughout the book. 5 stars, if you know someone who loves mysteries this would make an awesome Christmas gift.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture and Arianne Richmonde for giving me the opportunity to read The Wfe's House.
The cover is great and propelled me to read this novel. A distressed, depressed, recently widowed woman lives in a cliff top glass house and is so vulnerable and naive to take in triplets (yes, you read that right) as she can’t say no and can barely make a decision about the weather let alone her life. This is an over the top soap opera which you continue to read as you have no idea where it can possibly go. Off a cliff in this case. With dramatic music. I was almost at the point of pushing her myself until she finally, slowly and painfully attempts to take back her life before it’s too late.
The cover initially got me wanting to read this book. A fancy glass house seemed like an interesting setting for a thriller novel. That's where my interests waned. The story isn't exactly what you would expect after reading the synopsis so it's not what I was expecting. The main character was too gullible and naive for my liking. I actually couldn't stand how dumb she was and the other characters in the book even knew how dumb she was. It wasn't believable for me and I lost interest so quickly I ended up skimming to see what happens. I didn't end up surprised or caring at that matter.
Thank you to the published and to Netgalley for the copy of this book!
Cliffside, a large glass mansion on the Californian Coast, becomes the sole property of Juan's widow after his death. His quiet, unassuming British wife discovers some of his secrets after his death. Then three young people befriend the widow and things go down hill from there. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my ARC.
When shown the beautiful house in Big Sur and her husband telling her he would make it hers starts this thriller. But then he has an accident and dies shortly after they move in. After that it just goes crazy. Who do you trust? What is really true? The book starts a bit slow but it picks up speed and the the twists and turns through the end are worth it!!
Thank you NetGalley, Arianne Richmonde and Bookouture for this edition and hearing my honest review. Looking forward to reading more with you

LOVED every single twist in this book! I thought I'd figured things out, thought I understood where the author was taking me but time after time the story went in a different direction - and I loved it!
Oh my!! How innocent can a woman be was my first thought at the beginning of the book!!
Oh my!! When you are this naive, you deserve to be preyed upon was my thought in mid-book!!
OMG!! Woman, get up. Do something. Everyone is lying, even you!! That was my thought when I realized where the book was going before the main character.
The story sure did evoke my emotions, sympathy, empathy, rage, finally resignation. My first book by author Arianne Richmonde was a rollercoaster of emotions. I couldn’t stop reading as I have met women like the main character who are that innocent.
The house was the focal point of the widow’s life. Nothing and nobody could ever make her leave. It was her dream house. Being a lawyer, she was still not the sharpest knife on the stand. Her loneliness and dependency on her husband made her more vulnerable. Post his death she was set adrift.
Entered the triplets who brought color to the house initially. She invited them in and allowed them to live with her until the tables turned. From then on, it was lies, lies, and more lies. True colors were revealed, and the story took a twist. In fact, a few twists before the explosive finale.
The first half was slow, no doubt, but the second rocked. From suspense, it became an action packed thriller. The main character received some knee-busting kicks. I hoped they would make her savvy and street smart.
I could guess the story as there were few characters to bank on. But I still enjoyed the book thoroughly as some parts of it resonated with me. I was that innocent once and I was preyed upon too.
Overall, a great adrenaline filled ride in the last few pages.
Plodding story with unlikeable characters. The main character was extremely frustrating and written as clueless. You could tell where the plot was going in the first few chapters and the author had her make horrible choices. I skimmed through most of the book hoping it would get better. Sadly, it didn't.
Okay, so let me start by saying I didn't love this book. My one main big problem with it though was the description/synopsis - which is pretty misleading and doesn't describe this story well at all. The entire story centers around our main character, a recently widowed women who is alone in a big house and battling with a slight drinking problem. Three triplets mysteriously come into her life and change everything she thought she knew about her life.
The story wasn't bad and has all the workings for a popular hit, I just think it got away from itself here and there. It's incredibly soap operay and over the top, which means little to nothing in this story feels believable. That being said if you can just ignore that, it is a fun ride. I never knew what I was going to get next. It's definitely a ride lol.
Just a little bit TOO over the top for me but still well written and I'd prefer too much over too little.
