Cannot say enough good things about this - inventive, curiosity-stirring, and moving, it's just essential for every school and library to have. Really loved it, and will buy it as presents for kids' birthdays. Spread the word, it is GREAT.
I love this book. The content is great. The illustrations are incredible. We read one story a day and have done more research on the amazing women. It has been great for discussions.
I really enjoy these anthologies of women who changed the world, and this collection of immigrant women was no exception. I found the selection of women and stories interesting and diverse, and it kept me entertained.
The women featured came from all over the world and immigrated to a plethora of different countries, they also worked in a wide range of professions, and it was nice to see so many different perspectives. I adore reading about people whose stories often go unnoticed and aren’t celebrated so books like this really work for me.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley.
This was another fantastic Rebel Girls book. It's so important for all people to feel seen and this shows that in this climate where people are once again using their white priveledge to make immigrant feel worthless that they are NOT! Love this one!!
This is another successful entry to the Rebel Girls series. My daughter loved hearing about all the immigrants and what their successes and roles in life were. I love these books so very much, and so does she.
i adore this series so i was super excited to be able to read this early and it didn’t disappoint. these women are iconic and i’m so glad to read about immigrants and how they stood out in other countries
We have enjoyed all of the Rebel Girls books, and Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Immigrant Women Who Changed the World is no exception. However, I will say that is probably our least favorite in the series. The stories in the Rebel Girls books are limited to a page, and it felt like many of the women in this book needed more information to fully appreciate their accomplishments. It also seemed that a lot of the feats in this book targeted more personal accomplishments rather than wider picture. The illustrations were good, but the vast differences between artist’s styles didn’t always blend well throughout the book. Overall, if this is the only exposure to some of these women your child will have, it is a good book. However, we have liked some other books about this topic much better.
Following in the tradition of the other "Good Night Stories" this focuses on the contributions that Immigrant Women have made to their adoptive countries.
As always the tales are accompanied by the most spectacular of illustrations to be seen in children's mixed biography books.
Of particular note is the combination of lesser known and more widely known women, and the wide range of contributions these women made.
I found the text explaining where the women were from and where they migrated to, to be a little small and understated compared to the other text (i.e. it's the same size as the page number just underneath it) and while it had a glossary of terms and list of illustrators, the inclusion of a world map perhaps even with lines of the migrations would have been a useful addition (i.e. where did most women go to? It seems USA is very high on the list) and could provoke some interesting class / home discussion on the current mood around immigration in the traditional "magnet" countries.
Inspirational. Every female and male should read this book to see the struggles, challenges, etc. that women have gone through to provide for themselves and their families. It shouldn't be like this to feel safe in our world. This book belongs in every library.
Loved sharing in this book with my daughter. She's 3 years old, but I find the colorful nature of the Rebel Girls stories holds her attention really well. This has been a great bedtime read. I am a Momma who wants my daughter to know many experiences of others. Her paternal grandmother is an Immigrant from Japan. The immigrant experience is so important to our global community and our ever more globally connected society. I'm so glad my daughter & I were approved for this wonderful read and recommend it to any parents.
This is part of the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series, and it focuses on 100 immigrant women and their achievements.
This is a great read specifically for kids, in this book you’ll meet female artists, scientists, actresses and many more.
Would have loved it as a kid but still enjoyed it completely, it is so inspiring and tells the children they can pursue and make their dreams come true.
The illustrations are colorful and gorgeous.
I love these books. They are my favorite things to read to my son. I think it is so important to learn about history and the amazing people who helped us to where we are now. These books do a great job of reminding us.
This is a lovely book, full of inspirational stories. A must read for anyone wanting to know more about strong, independent, hard working and determined young rebel immigrant girls.
My Thoughts
Once upon a time or Once there was a is how all wonderful tales begin, and each of the stories in this book is certainly wonderful. Each one also begins the way those other wondrous stories do – with Once……
This book, as the title says, tells the stories of 100 immigrant women; all of these women changed the world, each in their own way. Each story follows a standard format; a mini-biography focusing on the change she brought about, her immigration route (in one line), and a quote. This is accompanied by a portrait of the featured woman by a female artist.
What I Loved About It
It includes both well-known and lesser-known girls and women from around the world (well, that around-the-world thing is kind of obvious from the book’s title). In fact, I only knew a small number of the 100 featured in this book, so I certainly learned a lot; and was inspired by many.
The book talks about a wide range of fields; the arts, sports, entertainment, STE(A)M fields, politics, and various other professions. This will certainly inspire and interest readers to learn more about those fields/professions.
The featured women not only span regions across the world, but also time. Some of them are historical figures while others are more contemporary; and many are girls and women actively pursuing their passions today.
Of course, the mini-bios are an excellent way to introduce young audiences to many inspiring people. I love how the authors not included dreams and achievements , but also struggles and hardships. Both are done in an age-appropriate way without over-simplifying the narrative.
Last, but not the least, the portraits!! They are gorgeous, stunning, and as variedly beautiful and unique as the artists behind them!! The 100 portraits are painted by seventy different artists; women and people of marginalized gender – as the book mentions in its listing of the illustrators.
I know I said, last, but overall, this book lends itself to discussions because of its very nature. It is sure to ignite curiosity not just about the featured women, but also their professions, their countries (where they came from and moved to), the artists, and more.
And backmatter includes a helpful glossary of words that might need more explaining to its younger readers, as well as a listing of the illustrators. There is also a short ‘About the Author’ and an acknowledgements section.
What Might Make It Even Better
While I understand that it is hard to include lots of information in mini-bios, some of them felt abrupt in their narrative. It was like something was obviously missing in some of them, and I had to re-read it to make sure. On the other hand, I only noticed this issue in a very few of the 100.
It would have been cool if the book included immigrants to more countries (or spread a little more evenly across included countries)
The title can say Good Night Stories for Rebels, instead of Rebel Girls! So not truly a grievance but just saying that everyone needs to read this!!
In Summary
A must-read collection that is sure to inspire, intrigue, and incite interesting conversations!! For all ages (not just the suggested range)
Source: NetGalley for original eARC ; and now own my own copy...
This book is full of stories of amazing women. Unfortunately my copy didn’t have the illustration, however I’m sure they were lovely. I would definitely recommend this book at school. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an egalley.
My 8 year old daughter and I loved reading this together. It was a great time reading a story or 2 before bed and then talking about it. It was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to get more of the rebel girl books to read with her.
My daughter loved this book. She has the other Rebel Girls books and since some of the stories seemed familiar to her she was getting out the other books and checking to see if some of the stories were shared between them. She read this whole book in one sitting and is excited for more to come out.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley!
The cover of this book is simple but eye-catching..
This book was fantastic. Seriously.
My kids and I loved it.
I'd definitely purchase a copy and check out other books by the author.
Another lovely read. This one didn't take me long as I flew through it, loving the stories it gives to inspire all children, but especially highlight the stories, background and achievements of immigrant women, some well known, some almost unheard of by many.
I would adapt this for my younger students, as well as recommend. I am trying to introduce more diversity into my classroom and these short stories are ideal for doing just that.
Another great book in this series. Would make a great baby shower gift or child birthday gift. Stories are just the right length for bedtime too!
