This book had me feeling all the feels and smiling throughout! I definitely recommend you give it a try.
What I loved about this book:
1. I loved this "Parent Trap" better than the original. The story behind it was great and I loved the characters.
2. This book was so addictive I was unable to put it down and think a major reason for that was Lord's easy to read writing style.
3. Even thought this covers some heavy topics it was still a light-hearted enjoyable read.
I truly adore Emma Lord as an author. I was looking forward to this one after thoroughly enjoying her prior book, Tweet Cute. This one did not disappoint. I loved the story, the characters, the storytelling style.
When Abby signs up for a DNA service, she has no idea that a full-blooded sister would pop up! Not only is finding out you have a secret sister a shock, finding out she’s famous on IG… wow! The story gets better as they go and meet in secret at a summer camp where they learn about each other for the first time ever!
I really enjoyed this story! Emma Lord wrote this really well, including angst, romance & family values all wrapped into one. It definitely gave me the Parent Trap vibes & I was here for it. The only thing I will say is that I feel like the book could’ve ended a lot sooner than it did. The ending felt pretty dragged on, but I understand why because it was pretty involved with the story line. It had to wrap EVERYTHING up.
I hope to pick this back up, but when I tried to read it before, I had a hard time connecting to the characters. I didn't feel attached to them, so I didn't ever get drawn to continue and put the book down just under halfway through. I loved Tweet Cute, so I was pretty disappointed that I didn't have the drive to finish this one. I do have a physical copy, so I hope one day I'll be able to.
This was really cute! I was looking for a fun story to read between more serious ones, and this one was pretty perfect. A cute touching story about family and friendship.
A new love, a secret sister, and a summer she'll never forget.
When Abby signs up for a DNA service, it’s mainly to give her friend and secret love interest, Leo, a nudge. After all, she knows who she is already: Avid photographer. Injury-prone tree climber. Best friend to Leo and Connie … although ever since the B.E.I. (Big Embarrassing Incident) with Leo, things have been awkward on that front.
But she didn’t know she’s a younger sister.
When the DNA service reveals Abby has a secret sister, shimmery-haired Instagram star Savannah Tully, it’s hard to believe they’re from the same planet, never mind the same parents—especially considering Savannah, queen of green smoothies, is only a year and a half older than Abby herself.
The logical course of action? Meet up at summer camp (obviously) and figure out why Abby’s parents gave Savvy up for adoption. But there are complications: Savvy is a rigid rule-follower and total narc. Leo is the camp’s co-chef, putting Abby's growing feelings for him on blast. And her parents have a secret that threatens to unravel everything.
But part of life is showing up, leaning in, and learning to fit all your awkward pieces together. Because sometimes, the hardest things can also be the best ones.
Abby and her friend Leo sign up for a DNA service, mostly to help Leo find answers. But Abby finds out that she actually has a sister. They decide to meet up at summer camp. It turns into an interesting summer as Abby’s whole world changes, and she navigates her friendships and her family’s secrets.
This was the sweetest book and I loved it so much. I didn't even realize it was a YA novel until I was finished, but then I had my teenage daughter read it too, and she loved it as well. Is there anything better than a teenage romance...I found myself reminiscing....I can't say enough about how lovely this book was!
This book was not for me. I don't do corny and this book was just too cheesy. I never would have read this on my own and, as a middle-age woman, I now know I need to stay away from cliched young adult book. Maybe this book would have been better if I actually was a young adult.
A very cute YA read with a premise that I enjoyed reading! I loved the relationships and the family bond in this one!
You were wrong, I was wrong, we were all wrong and had nothing to fear from Ms Emma Lord *cries into oblivion*
Very much slapping myself across the face for not reading this sooner, especially to the amazing publisher, and for being worried in the slightest because I can expect nothing more from this author. Never again shall I maketh this sin onto humanity.
Can you tell I loved this book? Because I did. I will admit, it didn't have exactly the same magic as Tweet Cute has, but it brings a whole other level of wonder and they're both boosts of serotonin in my opinion *sighs*
Very few authors write in, what I'm going to describe as, rainbow colours but Emma Lord is SO one of them and I just adore her. The writing style just absolutely shines and it's like Emma Lord reached inside of my brain and jazzed up all of my thoughts, putting to words feelings I didn't know I had or just ones I never think about but they're THERE and it's low-key scary,,,
Yeah, so I'm obsessed with the writing. Not only that, but the summer camp setting was just an absolute delight and I was completely there and along for the ride. The dialogue was spot-on and the teenage rep was so heart-achingly perfect, as per usual, it makes you want to weep.
However, it's the characters that just fly off the page. Unlike her debut, this book places a heavy focus on sister relationships, which is something that I very much resonated with. It was tricky to read at times even, but I don't think it could've been written any other way. Abby and Savannah don't have the dream dynamic one would expect, instead, they are faced with conflict and struggle to meet each other halfway, BUT ITS DONE SO WELL I CANT EVEN!!!!
I've seen quite a few reviews complain that Abby was annoying, which I can kind of understand, but I had absolutely no issues. Same as I did with Pepper, I could immediately sympathise and relate to Abby. I completely fell for her brave exterior and extremely scared interior of losing her friends, and I absolutely loved following her as the main character!!!
And if you had any doubts whether the friends to lovers would be done well, you'd be sorely surprised because it was absolute perfection and I... loved Leo and Abby so much. If you think this trope has no angst THINK AGAIN. They just absolutely melted me and had such great chemistry and OH MY OH MY SO CUTE I LOVED
Have I convinced you yet? You've already started? Oh great. Um so yeah, if you're looking for a YA contemporary romance that explores sisterly relations and 'oops I am also in love with my best friend', you've come to the right place and Emma Lord is here to give you the warmest hug. Read to cure all your problems <3<3<3
This sweet coming of age story really kept me reading. I loved that it was set at summer camp and that it wasn’t just a love story—it is also a story about sisterhood. Who wouldn’t love that? I’m a huge Emma Lord fan, but this was for sure a favourite.
Contemporary YA and I was here for it. This was the first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed it. This was cute and definitely for fans of “tweet cute”. Look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
This YA novel will transport you back to your teenage years…. going to summer camp, telling half truths to your parents, crushing on your best friend and finding out you have a secret sister.
Oh wait.
When Abby takes a DNA test alongside her best friend to support him in finding his family, the last thing she expects is to find more of her family, in particular a biological older sister!
Her secret sister, instagram wellness influencer, extremely well put together, smart and social Savannah Tully couldn't be any more different from clumsy, tree climbing, class failing Abby.
The two sisters devise a plan to meet up at summer camp to figure out how their parents know each other and why they kept the sisters apart for 16 years, but of course, no plan comes without its complications. Abby must juggle lying to her parents, overcoming the Big Embarrassing Incident, figuring out her plans for the future and learning to get along with her rule-following, overly achieving, holier-than-thou sister. What a wild summer this is shaping up to be.
Every 90s/00s kid LOVED the Parent Trap and this novel right here is the modern day version. There's family drama, friendship drama, romantic drama including an LGBTQ romance packed with drama, cultural identity drama, coming of age drama, ALL THE DRAMA in one thoroughly entertaining novel.
A very cute and wholesome read, well paced a lots of loveable characters this novel is a really solid YA book perfect for taking a break from the stressful world around us.
Overall, I had a great time reading this story. I will continue to pick it up anything Emma Lord writes. I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next!
I absolutely adored Tweet Cute and had to read Emma's next book. After receiving an ARC, I kept adding it to my TBRs and not getting around to it. I started it in 2021 at some point and then set it down. I was determined to make this the last month it was on a TBR. I was intrigued by the premise of group of friends doing a DNA test in solidarity of their friend who was adopted and one of the others finds out she has a full-blooded sister who lives close to her that she never knew about.
Emma Lord does characters fantastically. They feel like real people with real feelings and reactions. Although Abby isn't my favorite character of all-time, she felt authentic and I understood her motivations for her actions. I like that there was a budding romance but this was also a story about sisterhood too. I think all the subject matters were tackled beautifully and really weaved a rich story with fleshed out characters who I really connected with and cared about. It feels like real life and I think that really sets Emma apart from other YA authors. Even though the circumstances may be a bit outlandish, they really don't feel that way.
Are you looking for summer-y, campy, Parent Trap vibes? Do you love a good friends to lovers arc? What about the angst of teen self-actualization and individuation? THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.
I really really loved this story--the characters were refreshingly self-aware, the storyline is great, the setting is dreamy. I can't recommend this one enough.
Cute, but overhyped. The story of two girls who are very different, but really not that different - given that they are sisters who did not know about each other until they find about that secret on DNA web service.
I find this novel being light, uncomplicated read - and this is where the problem lies. The book shows us some very, very complicated issues (adoption, lies, friendships broken etc.), which could (and honestly, should) take long, hard ways to be solved - but instead the resolutions are reached quickly, within few conversations. I get that is a YA, but not even in the fairytales the life works like that, so I would appreciate some hard work and emotional honesty here. The political correctness in the set-up does not help, too, as they are simply the modern plot props, but not the base to show the real diversity.
I purchased this book for my high school library. My students have enjoyed it. and it has circulated well.
I don't read a lot of YA these days but I just really love emma lord's writing. it's refreshing and enjoyable and this was rly cute
