In this latest installment of the Ellery Hathaway series, we find Ellery living in Boston following the events of the prior book. FBI Special Agent Reed Markham is visiting from VA with his 7 year old daughter, Tula. Since his divorce he has had planned visitations with her due to the unpredictability of his work. The traumatic events which brought Ellery and Reed together were unexpected and complicated. Tulsa’s mother, Sarit, agrees to her spending time with her father in Boston.
Life is never boring for Ellery who survived a kidnapping in her youth only to be rescued by Agent Markham. This seems to cloud the background of the relationships she has as an adult. She feels forever scarred and struggles with trusting and asking for help even from Reed. They seem to be progressing slowly and enjoy the time they spend together which almost always turns into a professional case to solve.
As Ellery spends time with Reed and Tula in the park, a disturbing situation occurs when a frantic nanny begins looking for a 12 year old girl under her care. Margery Brimwood is worried when Chloe Lockhart’s cell phone is discovered in a nearby trash can. The girl’s mother, Teresa, a surgeon at Mass General Hospital is notified as well as her father, Martin, works for Fidelity. Consequently, Captain James Conroy assigns Ellery and her partner to investigate the disappearance of the missing girl. Sarit is not happy with Tula being in Boston with Reed when she learns about the case being investigated. She knows Reed can’t resist wanting to help even though he’s on vacation.
Needless to say, the case become complex with unexpected suspects. There are always secrets and lies which alter the path of the investigation at every turn. They soon realize the situation involves more than just a missing a teen but a history of unusual events. The twists and suspense leave you wanting more just as you think the story is going to wrap up.
Thank you @stmartinspress and @netgalley for a copy of Every Waking Hour by Joanna Schaffhausen for review. All opinions are my own.
Every Waking Hour is the 4th book in the Ellery Hathaway series, of which I have read only the 3rd and now the 4th. I do think they lend themselves well to starting at any point you like because the author does repeat quite a bit of backstory. However, I appreciated that more when it was my first read in the series and on the second, it was the thing that detracted most from my enjoyment of it. So that particular aspect of her writing seems to be hit or miss.
Ellery Hathaway is an interesting character as she was a victim of a serial kidnapped her herself and eventually used that trauma to become a police officer. It seems to give her quite the edge when investigating but the trauma also affects her daily so that makes things a lot harder for her too. Reed Markham is the FBI officer who rescued her years ago and they now have a relationship with each other. While spending time together, a girl disappears and they are both quickly brought into the investigation, which brings back a lot of old trauma for Ellery.
This one has a lot of character development as well as plot so it moves along very quickly. Like I say, I did find it slightly repetitive as I just read the 3rd book early this year and so I knew a lot of Ellery’s and Reed’s relationship and personal pasts but the author brought it all up often, probably for those just starting here.
Overall though, an great fast paced read with a few perspectives, an interesting case, and more character development for this series.
Content warnings for panic attacks, kidnapping and suicide.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an egalley in exchange for an honest review.
When FBI profiler Reed Markham and his daughter, Tula visit his girlfriend, Boston police detective, Ellery Hathaway, the two find their visit consumed with locating a missing teenage girl. When it is discovered that the girl's mother lost a child many years before and is now receiving menacing texts, Ellery and Reed will have to use all their resources before it is too late.
Although this book could be read as a standalone, I would strongly encourage every reader to enjoy every minute of the Ellery and Reed relationship. So much history between the two and certain things that happen in this installment makes my heart really ache. The case is exceedingly interesting and as the story progressed, I kept changing my mind as to who just might be the guilty person.

I deeply enjoy this series, and Every Waking Hour is another great addition. This mystery follows Ellery and Reed investigating the disappearance of a young girl, Chloe Lockhart, while navigating the deepening of their relationship, as Reed's daughter is visiting too. I like that the character's in this series feel like real people, even though they have gone through extreme situations (Ellery's kidnapping and torture, and Reed finding her), they still struggle with things most people would see as typical (divorce, emotional openness/connection, work/life balance). Also the way the mysteries are written, the resolutions aren't obvious, though for the most part all the information needed to solve the mystery is revealed during the story, it keeps my intrigued to the end. As always the ending is semi cliff hanger-ish, teasing you about what would be coming next...

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary advance reader copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
This is the fourth book in the Ellery Hathaway series. Each book could easily be a stand-alone book but I feel they would be best read as a series, the books are so good. Ellery is such a compelling character, she has survived the worst event possible, she was abducted and tortured as a child. The man who found and saved her, Reed Markham, now an FBI agent, is also now her boyfriend; Ellery, now a detective, tries to live her life with some type of normality.
While Ellery, Reed and his young daughter, Tula, are at the park, a young girl from an affluent family has gone missing; Ellery gets thrown into the case, with Reed assisting. Is this case too close to home for Ellery, will she ever be able to separate her trauma from the past with the present. Will Reed and her be able to make their relationship work, will she find the girl in time? I was on the edge of my seat trying to solve this crime, if there even was a crime as Ellery and Reed race to find answers. I love them as a couple, and cannot wait to read more of this series.
This book started out a little slow for but it picked up an was really good !!! It also had a few good twists I didn't coming
From my blog: Always With a Book:
This is the fourth book in Joanna Schaffhausen's Ellery Hathaway series and one that I just cannot read fast enough! I only discovered this series last year when the third book came out and I'm so glad I did...it really has become one of my favorite series.
I will say that while each of these books do stand on their own and contain a case that is self-contained, I highly recommend reading the series in order. The character development and backstory that builds from book one will really help you to understand the relationship between Ellery and Reed and why there is such a strong bond between them. There are also some threads that are carried through and you will appreciate them all the more for having read all the previous books. If you do pick this one up first, perhaps it will entice you to go back.
This latest installment finds Ellery and Reed in the right place at the right time when young Chloe goes missing. Of course, this case brings up lots of memories for Ellery but her sole focus is on bringing Chloe home safely. And as the two start digging into the case, it seems there is more to Chloe's disappearance than meets the eye.
I love this series because as much as it's about whatever case Ellery and Reed find themselves involved in, we also get just as much character development on them. They are ready to take their relationship to the next step, but of course there are some obstacles in the way.
This book keeps you flipping the pages wondering just what is going to happen next, both in terms of the case and with Ellery and Reed. I love that there were plenty of twists and turns, but not too many and that the case ended up being so much more than everyone first believed it to be because of all the secrets that the family kept hidden.
I really enjoy this series and I am already eager to see what happens in the next book, especially as that ending leaves us!
This was the fourth in a series and I did not read the first three. I did throughly enjoy this one though. I don't believe it took away from the story in any way me not reading the first books.
This is a great book. It has a couple of intense things going on at once. A young girl is kidnapped and her parents are very upset and worried. The mother, Teresa, had already lost a son years earlier in a brutal attack. He was murdered and the crime was never solved. The main character, Ellery, had been kidnapped at the age of fourteen also so took this case personally. She's also the cop on this case. Ellery will do whatever it takes to ensure that Chloe is safe. Even keeping her under constant care. She won't let her go out and do any of the things a normal teen does. She can't. She's afraid of something horrible happening to her like it did to her son all those years ago. You can't blame her for that.
This book takes you on lots of twists and turns. It is well written and the plot is great and easy to follow. I didn't figure out who the bad guy was at all. There is really a whole lot going on and lots of twists and turns. But it's very easy to keep up and know what is happening. I enjoyed this book a lot. The characters are all well developed and very likable. Maybe a couple of them you will want to hit but overall they are all easy to like. Relatable in many ways.
There is also a kind of love that may or may not be meant to be going on. Long story and I suggest you read this book to find out what that is all about. I did really enjoy this book. It kept my interest all the way through and didn't let me down at all. It surprised in where it should have and kept great pace. It was not bored at any point. I think this is a great series and I do intend to read more by this author.
Thank you #NetGalley, #JoannaSchaffhausen, #StMartin'sPress for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.
4/5 stars and a high recommendation.
Rookie Boston detective Ellery Hathaway was saved from a serial killer by FBI agent Reed Markham when she was a teenager. 16 years later they are both working together on a missing girl case Chloe who disappears from a street fair in Boston. With time running out for Chloe will Ellery’s past get in the way of her solving the crime
Every Waking Hour is the 4th book in the Ellery Hathaway and Reed Markham series by Joanna Schaffhausen . Another fantastic installment in the series ,this one continues along the same lines, an exciting tight, well-plotted story with well developed characters that kept me hooked to the end. Cannot wait to read the next one !
I would like to thank St. Martin’s Press & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
This is the fourth book in the Ellery Hathaway/Reed Markham mystery series; it is the second one I have read. As a young teenager, Ellery was kidnapped, raped, and tortured; she was rescued by FBI Agent Markham. Now an adult, Hathaway has become a police officer and has formed a close relationship Markham.
While he is visiting Ellery in Boston, he gets caught up in a missing child case assigned to Ellery and her training officer. Ellery, who has many emotional scars from her ordeal years ago, is a bit overwhelmed when she has to share her living space with Reed, his daughter, and her half sister who turns up uninvited at her door. All the while, she frantically searches for the missing child, hoping to save her as she had been saved.
Ellery is a flawed character and Reed may have his own savior complex to deal with. But, they make a good team and the story is can’t put down engrossing. An intriguing plot, twists and turns, and strong character development make this another good read in the series. And, best of all, the ending sets up a sequel.
Ellery Hathaway is never going to feel comfortable in her skin. With her past and an uncertain future, all that comes crashing together when 12-year-old Chloe Lockhart goes missing. Both Ellery, a police detective, and Reed, an FBI Special Agent, are in Boston Common when the child disappears. Ellery takes point, but overprotective Reed is there to guide the investigation. Or is it to manage Ellery since he thinks she will be his constant responsible as he was the one to have found her, as a child, when an abductor kidnapped and then concealed Ellery in a closet cage. Here is where reading the previous three books will come in handy.
As each layer of the Lockhart drama takes centerstage, Hathaway and Markham realize that there is more to the story as each player takes the spotlight. The reader ping pongs between the narratives and circumstances to come up with their profile and suspects. Yet, how it all pans out is somewhat of a surprise.
I’m not sure where Joanna Schaffhausen will go from here. May parts of the ongoing backstory are tied-up with this book. Is there a future with Ellery and Reed? Will Ellery once again need to call on her FBI contact to help with yet another case, or to warm her bed, or will, with the help of Dorie, her mentor, be able to finally stand on her own without Reed’s security net to catch her.
This fourth installment in the Ellery Hathaway series has Ellery and Reed Markham investigating the disappearance of a twelve year old girl. The investigation brings Ellery’s memories of her own childhood abduction by a serial killer bubbling to the surface. She has to fight to stay objective and focused on the current abduction as they race against the clock in order to bring Chloe Lockhart home before time runs out.
This is a well written series that keeps you engaged until the final page. This book can be read as a standalone because the author does a good job of giving just enough backstory without bogging down the current storyline but, as with any series, you get true depth of characterization and development by starting at the beginning. The investigation has plenty of twists to keep you guessing and there is just enough going on in Ellery and Reed’s relationship to keep you wondering what might be next for them.
This was part of a series of books about a serial killer victim, Ellery, turned cop and her FBI saviour turned lover, Reed. Wow, what a ride. This book was an excellent stand alone but I desperately want to go back and read their story from the beginning. This book focused on a young girl, chloe, who was abducted, and explores the tangled web families deal with when tragedy strikes. Can Ellery and Reed find her while dealing with their own issues? How much tragedy can a family endure... The ending left me wanting more. Can't wait to read the next book.
Thank you Netgalley for this arc
Somehow I didn’t realize that this was the fourth book in the series, even if it’s not necessary I like to go back to the beginning and read through from the beginning. The author did I must add give enough backstory that it wasn’t all that necessary. Starting at the beginning gives you more of the character evolution and development. So all that said this was a great addition to the series with a chilling suspenseful race against time around. Great writing and interesting twists. The emotion and building of suspense were enough to keep anyone completely entrance. And some things you just couldn’t see coming. Ellery is an interesting, complex and very well written character.
In this fourth book in the series, we find Ellery Hathaway now living in Boston and working as a rookie detective and in a relationship with FBI agent Reed Markham. When Ellery, Reed and his daughter Tula are at a local fair, a woman starts screaming that a child is lost. With Ellery’s past and Reed’s experience finding missing children, they are quick to get involved in the case.
Not to give away any spoilers, Ellery and Reed start unraveling family secrets, long buried hurt, and another murder that happened years ago. Can they find the missing girl Chloe before the killer takes his revenge?
I love this series written by Joanna Schaffhausen. The mystery is quick paced, suspenseful and there are twists and turns in every chapter. Just when you think you have it figured out; something happens that takes the reader in a different direction. It is also intriguing to follow Ellery as she is still dealing with the aftermath of her own abduction, which leaves her vulnerable, yet her strength to carry on and help others shines through. Although you could read the book as a stand alone novel, I do think that the reader would miss the backstory of Ellery which the series is based upon by not reading the series in order. Thank you so much to the author Joanna Schaffhausen, St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book to review. It was fantastic! All opinions expressed for this review are unbiased and entirely my own
I just read that this is the fourth book in a series. I would prefer to read the first 3 before this one.
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book, in return for a fair and honest review.
This is the fourth book in the Ellery Hathaway series - while you could read it without reading the previous books, you'd be missing a lot of context and the backstory for both Ellery and Reed Markham.
This book moves into new territory. The first three books dealt with issues in Ellery's and Reed's previous history (both separate and combined), and how they were resolved in the present day. In this book, although their personal lives are certainly a factor, the basic case they must solve doesn't stem from their history.
Their involvement is somewhat coincidental - Ellery and Reed and Reed's daughter are at the Boston Common for a street fair, when a teenage girl disappears from her nanny (yeah, I know, what's a teenager doing with a nanny?). The nanny calls for help, and Ellery gets involved, since she's now on the Boston police force. Reed, as an FBI specialist in missing children, also becomes involved.
Resolving this case requires a lot of untangling a complicated past history, which also explains why the girl is accompanied everywhere by a nanny. It's a twisty mystery, and one which I very much enjoyed following.
I found this in some ways more interesting than #2 and #3 in the series, because it wasn't dealing directly with Ellery's and Reed's past history. After all, being in the police and the FBI should bring them plenty of opportunity to get involved in cases that don't stem from their own pasts!
Another thing that I enjoyed very much in this book is that Ellery now has a partner on the police force, who is supportive of Ellery's issues, and respects her as a police officer. Perhaps they are even inching toward friendship? It would be good to see Ellery having supportive friends other than Reed!
The ending of this book makes it pretty clear that there will be another book to follow - not that the plot of this one isn't resolved (I hate books that end with cliffhangers!), but that a whole new plot is suggested. I'll be eagerly awaiting it!
FABULOUS police procedural crime thriller dealing with the disappearance of Chloe (12 years old), from a family who had lost a son ( murdered at the same age) 12 years ago. Great characterization, with an abundance of suspense, leading up to a mind blowing conclusion. Enjoyed immensely & RECOMMEND highly. First book of this author that I have read & will definitely backtrack to read the previous 3 in this series. Thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is the 4th book in the Ellery Hathaway series. Joanna Schaffhausen has outdone her previous stories of Ellery and her world with this book. If you have not read the first three books, I'd recommend them. They build the back story and show the growth of the characters. All four books are outstanding reads.
The back story of Ellery's abduction as a young woman follows along in this volume. She is learning to live without being so frightened all the time and is developing an emotional relationship with the FBI agent, Reed, who saved her from her serial killer abductor. As the two grow closer, they must cope with the disapproval from his first wife who feels Ellery is not good for her daughter.
When a young girl disappears from a street fair, Ellery and Reed join the investigation. Even though it brings Ellery back to her own trauma, she is determined to help find this girl before anything happens to her. Our MCs find the victim's family has a past history that could be part of the current crime.
Tense and full of atmosphere that sets the reader up for surprise after surprise, I found this book to be totally engrossing and a mind bending read!
Thank you to NetGalley, Joanna Schaffhausen and St Martin's Press for the free e-book in exchange for an honest review.
Well I have to say that this is one of the only series' that I have kept up with and each and every book leaves me wanting more Ellery. I really enjoyed the pace of the novel and seeing Ellery try to come to peace with some of the uglier sides of herself. I really enjoyed the twists and the newish characters that we got to spend more time with in this novel. I loved the cliffhanger ending and I can't wait for the next Ellery adventure!
