This was not very good. If I didn't ready have the next 2 from NetGalley, I definitely wouldn't continue this series. The many characters and POVs was nonstop and such quick changes!! One paragraph, one perspective. Next paragraph, another perspective. I don't like too many POVs and this was definitely too many. And maybe I missed something but the reasoning for the murders was weak. I didn't feel like I got to know any of the characters well enough because there were so many. There were a couple of main and then too many side that were almost main!
I loved the Monkeewrench series so had high hopes going into this one. It has a lot of characters to keep straight and the changes in perspective were a little confusing, but all in all its a good book. It delves into PTSD, which was interesting but made me sad for the character. I'm looking forward to the next.
Deep into the Dark: A Mystery (The Detective Margaret Nolan Series, 1)
This book is not part of the Monkeewrench series. This is the start of a new series.
I found Deep In the Dark to be a great story, it had many interesting characters, in fact, there were too many characters, it was quite hard to keep track of them all.
Sam's PTSD was pretty rough; his flashbacks were hard to read about. I found the book to be interesting, fast-paced, and a good read even though it was very dark. It was an engaging read, but it much of a mystery.
I really enjoyed this book. I read it in one sitting and felt the anxiety of the characters. I would definitely recommend this book.
RATING: 3.5 STARS
2021; Minotaur Books/St. Martin's Press
I really enjoyed Tracy's first novel, Monkeewrench, but then found the next several books a bit hard to get into. When I saw there was a new series, I thought I would give the author another try and really enjoyed the book. I did think that the killer was a bit obvious too early, so I almost wrote him off. My only thing with this book is that the series is called Margaret Nolan, and what drew me in this book was Sam and Melody. I do hope they are reoccurring characters, as Maggie on her own was just okay. I also did not care for the "romance" bit in the book, as I am not sure why it is needed. Was Maggie or Remy (sp?) in the Monkeewrench series, and there is background? I am down for the next two books at least.
***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***
I liked the writing style of this author. However, there were so many characters introduced at the beginning that I had a hard time following the story or finding a character to connect to. I enjoyed how the pieces fit together in the end and would like to read the next in the series.
Deep into the Dark was tough at first for me to follow. There was just multiple POVs and they were all so different. As I continued to read, they all started to connect and I was hooked. I couldn't put the book down! I needed to know what had happened to Sam and Melody. Also I needed to know who the Murderer was. I was shocked about everything! I did not expect the first murderer to be who it was! The second was wasn't quite the shock. But goodness! It was a really good book and I would definitely recommend this one!
Deep into the Dark has an intense and intricate plot, featuring a unique look into the effects of PTSD. I highly recommend this one if you enjoy mystery novels.
A serial killer, a stalker. A solider with PTSD and two murders …. Yes, sign me up!!!
Deep into the Dark is Book one in P.J. Tracy’s new detective series. I enjoyed this one and think the series can only go up from here. Only downfall there was for me was that there were wayyyyy too many characters & confusing to keep up sometimes. But overall a good time! I will definitely pick up more books in this series!
A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an e-arc and a physical copy of this one in exchange for my honest review.
This is the beginning of a new series that I hope will be good, I liked the main characters, they were good developed and I found them interesting and how they are connected through out the story. I was definitely pulled in and read it in one day
A great book with a great cast of characters! They are new characters but they are dark and edgy and this book is twisted and once you get into the pages you are going to like it! Jump in and give them a chance to grow on you, You won't be sorry!
I really enjoyed the storyline. Fast paced and easy to connect with Sam & Melody. I’m actually hoping to see more of them in the next book!! I’m curious as to how Tracy will develop the characters in the next book.
I found this to be a well written book with interesting characters, though there were issues in the book that I generally shy away from.. it was okay but some parts were difficult to read.I received an advance copy from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
This is the beginning of a new series that I hope will be good, I liked the main characters, they were good developed and O found them interesting how they are connected through the story.
A new series by a fan favorite author. Detective Nolan doesn’t have a lot of fans in her department, so she knows she has to solve the case to continue to prove herself. A girl is beaten by her boyfriend so she runs to help from her friend with PTSD after being overseas. Later the boyfriend is murdered. Meanwhile the friend’s wife has moved out. Later she is murdered. Is the black Jeep involved? How are the two cases related? Great start to a new series.
Goodreads
Great book. Highly recommend and will most defiantly read more by this author and suggest to others!
I really enjoyed this title. I liked the twists and turns and the writing style is nice and smooth. The story flows well and kept my attention. Thank you for the opportunity to read this title. I will be recommending this one to friends.
A hard boiled vet, a mysterious death. A perfect mystery. Just helping a person out turns into more than Sam bargains for, but he seems to attract more all the time. Home from a place he has trouble talking about, he seems the perfect hero when a boyfriend gets too rough. If only he didn’t turn up dead. Sam’s troubles could have taken a quick turn if not for another vet on the force who speaks Sam’s language and understands his story.
DNF
I don't know what is happening to me but every book recently I just could not finish, this being one of them.
Now, this sounded intriguing and the writing wasn't bad but there were a lot of things that bothered me. I'm just going to list everything that I didn't like sorry. There were way too many characters and POVs. There was so much happening that I couldn't really get into the story because of that. There was really no character development and I got pretty far before I DNF. Because of the lack of character development, I couldn't connect with anyone.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Deep Into the Dark by P.J. Tracy is the first of a new series featuring Detective Margaret Nolan. Evidently the author previously (as co-authors) wrote the very popular Monkeewrench series. I have not read the series, so came into this story with no preconceived expectations.
There are several threads in this story. A killer is loose in LA, targeting women. Margaret Nolan works for the LAPD and is struggling to make a name for herself. She has a brother that died in Afghanistan. And we also have Sam Easton who suffers debilitating PTSD after his time in the war. Easton will cross paths with Det. Nolan when he becomes a suspect in the serial murder cases.
Those who like gritty police dramas, intense scenes, and have an interest in PTSD will especially find this book interesting. While the subject matter did not resonate so much with me, the writer's skill with words cannot be denied. She is very good at building pictures on the page with detailed, sharp descriptions. The choice of words builds drama.
I appreciate NetGalley, P.J.Tracy, and St. Martin's Press for allowing me to read this ARC. For me personally this was a 3.5 but for good writing I'm rounding up to 4 stars.
