A good collection of recipes for cast-iron cooking suitable for a campsite. Also a nice overview of choosing, seasoning, and caring for cast iron. I would have liked more pictures, but the recipes are solid and would be great for camping.

This book was a fun one to read. Although cooking while camping can be tricky this author does a good job of breaking it down into easy to follow steps.

This cookbook had some really great recipes. The recipes were easy to understand and not too complicated for the average cook. I enjoyed the illustrations and look forward to making these recipes for years to come.

Cast-Iron Camping Cookbook: Easy Skillet Recipes for Outdoor Cooking by Pauline Reynolds-Nuttall is a great cookbook, full of wonderful recipes and tips on using the skillet. The drool making recipes are easy to follow, and I have already tried out a few recipes. I live alone and do not have an outdoor grill, but using a cast iron skillet is the next best thing, I'm hooked. You don't have to use these recipes just for camping either. If you enjoy a simple cooking as much as I do, than I highly recommend this wonderful book.

Wow! What an amazing resource. The information in the first chapter alone is worth the price. It truly is a treasure, plus 75 (!) recipes for camping or home. Everything from how to care for your cast-iron skillet to how to pack food and equipment for a camp out, plus so much in between. So much information that's practical and so helpful, whether you are a novice or an old hand at camping, things camper really needs to know. Loved it!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

There is a surprising amount of variety in the recipes in this book!

I wish there were pictures of each recipe - that's something I always look for in a cook book. But there's descriptions of each before each recipe. There is also a conversion chart in the back of the book.

There's quite a few recipes from breakfasts to desserts! A lot of them seem time intensive or require a lot of prep that I wouldn't typically do if I was camping, but some of these recipes are decadent and would be good outdoorsy treats! There's also information about how to maintain your cast iron skillet.

Overall I wasn't particularly wowed by any of these recipes but there are a lot of options.

f you’re an avid camper and want to prepare good, but easy meals, then Cast Iron Camping Cookbook: Easy Skillet Recipes for Outdoor Cooking by Pauline Reynolds-Nuttall may be a perfect cookbook for you. This cookbook contains dozens of mouthwatering recipes, many made with easy convenience foods. The foods are definitely not gourmet, but there is a variety of both American and Middle Eastern dishes, as well as a few others. The cookbook includes lots of vegetarian and vegan dishes, which may be a plus for some, and a drawback for others. However, there is a good variety of dishes that contain meat, chicken, and fish. All of the dishes are made in a cast iron skillet, so they work on the stovetop too, which is a bonus. You can try the dishes at home to make sure they work before taking everything camping.

For some reason Rockridge Press, the publisher of this cookbook, doesn’t allow very many photographs, and that is a real drawback since most cooks want to see what their finished dishes are supposed to look like. Luckily there are positive aspects to offset the lousy offering of photos. The recipes are mostly easy and have minimal ingredients, which is helpful when having to pack up everything to take camping. The author has developed some recipes that are easier than the originals, like the Campfire Éclair Pizza, which I’m sure is very good, but the French would absolutely have fits to learn that the pizza is named after their famous pastry, since it uses piecrust instead of choux paste and is nothing like a real éclair. She also presents what she calls Toad in the Hole. Traditional Toad in the Hole is a British children’s dish that has been around for hundreds of years and consists of sausages in Yorkshire pudding, and certainly not an egg sitting in the middle of a piece of toast. That doesn’t make the cookbook bad, but the author should do her research before misrepresenting her dishes.

All told, if you are a camper, this cookbook is full of ideas to break the monotony of packing the same campfire dishes and since everything is made in a cast iron skillet, eliminates the need to take extra pans and equipment.

I took this book camping with us this weekend and I can't wait to give some of these recipes a try! Having a Kindle version of the cookbook took up less space than a traditional cookbook and was easy to have in front of me while i cooked! If you're using a cast iron while camping, this is the book you need!

This book was received as an ARC from Callisto Media - Rockridge Press in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I have been waiting for another cast iron cookbook in an open flame since we came up with the idea for our cooking demo program but to see this food modern and elevated like you are eating at a 5 star restaurant in the woods just does not get any better than that. I know our patrons and community would enjoy the photos and creativity of the recipes and I know these would be perfect for a camping trip.

We will consider adding this title to our TX collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

Cast Iron Camping Cookbook is a new niche cookbook collection for cast-iron cooking in the great outdoors. Released 30th June 2020 by Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 180 pages (for the print copy) and available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.

The book has a logical and easy to follow format. Following an introductory chapter which covers the background how-to of outdoor cooking and how to incorporate cast iron utensils, the author covers the other necessary tools, supplies, and ingredients, and the following chapters include the recipes, arranged thematically by meal type: breakfast, snacks & sides, lunch, dinner, and dessert. No nutritional information is included in the recipes, but the author has provided portions, and cooking times as well as tips and variations highlighted in text boxes.

The recipes have their ingredients listed bullet style in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard only. Special tools and ingredients are also listed, along with yields and cooking directions. Special classifications for each recipe (30 minutes or less, 5 ingredient, vegan, etc) are included in a header bar. Most of the ingredients are easily sourced at any moderately well stocked grocery store. The book also includes a short author bio and a metric conversion chart, but lacks any index or a general ingredients index. The recipes are tasty and easily prepared, requiring few ingredients and little prep time.

My main quibble with the book is that the recipes are mostly not photographed. There are a few photos, and they're clear and attractive, but they only represent about 5% of the recipes included in the book. It is, however, a very well written book and especially given the pandemic, when camping and socially isolating is one of the few alternatives for vacation time, this is a very timely book.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This is perfect for camping but also a good reference for cast iron cooking inspiration in general. I love our cast iron but can never remember how to properly care for mine....loved that this book gives information on this and breaks down some tips for longevity. Very meat heavy but definitely some veggie choices in there! There is even a section on cast iron desserts....like cookie smore nachos which sound amazing!! I just wish there were more photos. Definitely lacking a good ratio of recipes to photography which is important to me in a cookbook.

This book has lots of camp out cooking tips and recipies. They all sound amazing and while I have tried several of them and they taste great, they have all been made at home. I am excited for COVID-19 to go away so we can get back to camping and try these out the way they were intended to be made, over a campfire.

This is a great book for any camper, but also for anyone just wanting to try some fun and different recipes.

5 Stars.

This cookbook was a huge surprise! Cast Iron camping was a versatile cookbook with chapters on Cast Iron information, campsite and fire setup, and also had a bunch of really cool recipes. So a jack of all trades type book with a fountain of information to help you have a great time.

What did I like? So book starts with tidbits about cast iron pans that I had little knowledge of. I have a cast iron passed down from my grandfather, so I have a little knowledge but no where near the authors tale. It was interesting to google the story behind the pan since I have a Wagner Ware Sydney cast iron. The book takes you through campsite, and fire prep which had a few things I wasn’t aware of either. Knowledge is power. Last the recipes really interested me, usually campfire fire is reduced to s’mores and hotdogs, so it was lovely to see a well rounded meal prep. Most of the dishes offered a vegan aspect too which was a big surprise and gladly welcomed.

Would I recommend or buy? I usually like more pictures in my recipe books but this one had a wealth of information included. I love outdoor cooking so I would definitely want a copy even though I would love more pictures. The cooking itself is pretty simplistic and I love how the author adds her meal prep approach and even how to line the coolers. Highly versatile book.

Thoughts for the author? Kudos on a great book. Just really enjoyed the vegan ideas. You learn something new every day and I sure learned a lot from reading your book. Five stars! I received a copy to read and offer an opinion.

I think this is a great camping cookbook! When our kids were young we took them camping every spring and fall (we live in Florida) and we basically kept to the same menu. As empty-nesters now I think it'll be fun to try some new recipes from this book. There's also a lot of helpful information on how to cook with cast iron, how to season your cast iron, how to pack your coolers, and pantry ideas.

Whether you are a beginner camper or a seasoned one, I think you'll enjoy this cookbook!

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.

Cast Iron Camping Cookbook by Pauline Reynolds-Nuttall is a great collection of tips and recipes for cooking with cast iron - and I love cooking with cast iron, whether or not we are camping.

The first section of the book goes into the care and feeding of cast iron, as well as camp cookouts and fire safety, and there's a lot of good stuff in there - dish detergent vs dish soap, how to light a campfire, and a whole list of alternate uses for cast iron cookware.

But the really good stuff is the recipes, divided into Breakfast, Snacks & Sides, Lunch, Dinner and Dessert. The recipes include all the basics including prep time, easy and clear instructions and complete ingredient lists. Most also include tips, which is always great. The only thing missing is the nutritional information, which would be nice but isn't necessary - who actually counts calories when camping, right?

In keeping with the camping theme, the recipes are simple and easy to make, but also delicious - Pumpkin-Spice French Toast, Backcountry Fry Bread, Sautéed Mushrooms with Spinach, Chicken and Bacon Quesadilla, Campfire Nachos, Sweet Potatoes and Rice, Rustic Crusted Salmon, Strawberry-Chocolate Cake Skillet, Campire Eclair Pizza and so many more.

Cast Iron Camping Cookbook is a great companion to every piece of cast iron cookware and every campfire - even those we sit around in the back yard. And, the great thing is the recipes will taste just as good if they're made on the stove!

Honestly the title and cover sold me before I even opened this book. Talk about YUM! I was all to eager to start looking at these campsite eats.

Let me just say that I am a southern woman and the cast iron might as well be the holy grail. I cant believe it never crossed my mind to bring the skillet along with us when we went camping, it is all to obvious now that Ive been missing out.

This little cookbook is packed full of fast, easy, fun and mouthwatering looking dishes. But it also has the sweetest little memory snippets and personal thoughts written prior to each recipe. The one thing I wish there was more of is pictures, I wont harp on it too much because the ones supplied were just *drools*.

If you love camping, dont be like me and stick to lame old hotdogs and marshmallows on stick. Grab your cast iron skillet, this book and go treat yourself!

Very nice book with lots of great and easy recipes to make over a campfire. There are some recipes names that I had no idea what they were and there was not photo so I had to go look it up. I wish there were more photos. There are some desserts recipes as well but it's missing a skillet cookie recipe that I would love to make.
