I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Very simple text and pictures. Not sure how many kids would specifically say they want to be an archaeologist, but it is nice to expose them to different things.
This was a cute starter book for kids about archaeologists and what they do. I think kids will really enjoy the illustrations and story of this book and it will get them thinking about what they want to be when they grow up.
A cute, bright, and colorful book that explains the work of an archeologist, complete with an idea for creating a future find for an archeologist centuries from now. The text might be a little hard for reading alone for the intended audience, but should be interesting as a read-aloud.

This is a look at what archaeologists do and why they do it. It uses simple words to explain to young kids why they dig in the dirt, and how they dig to find history. It was a nice read, with great information, but not a best seller forever to be published.
"Archeologists and What They Do" is a delightful illustrated book for young children by Liesbet Slegers. Originally published in Dutch in 2019, this English translation from Clavis Publishing is due out 21st July 2020. It has 32 pages and will be available in hardcover format. It is one of the "Profession" series which include books on doctors, astronauts, dentists, race car drivers and more.
This fun informative book unveils what an archaeologist is and the importance of their work. Kids learn that they search for things that people used a long time ago. They document, label and study these artifacts so we can learn how people lived in ancient times. Most of these finds end up in museums for modern day kids and adults to enjoy.
The bright, playful illustrations draw young readers into the narrative and the text explains in simple terms all about archeology and those that are involved in it. A great follow-up to reading the book would be a trip to a museum. The author has included at the end of the book an activity in which kids can collect their own artifacts and bury them so future generations can dig them up and discover life in 2020. I highly recommend this book and the entire series.
A cool little book teaching your kids all about what an Archaeologist is and what it is they do. It broadens their minds by giving them in-depth details about this digging job, in a fun and interesting way. This cute little book captivates its reader with its vibrant colors and quirky characters, all having fun playing make-believe that they are Archaeologists. Its educative fun and interesting.
I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from Liesbet Slegers and Clavis Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a fun book explaining “what archaeologists do”, the tools they use, how they find artifacts. The illustrations are simple, fun, and colourful.
I requested this book for my daughter who is 2.5 because my brother, her uncle is an archeologist. I thought this would be cool to help her learn what her uncle does. The read overall was fine but it was a bit slow. Also not sure if it was this copy or how it would like as a physical book but some pages didn’t have pictures they only had a coloured square. Not sure if that’s how it’s supposed to be or how the finished copy looks.
(**Note this book is not on Goodreads).
This a cheerful and bright book which gives a brief insight into what an archaeologist does, the equipment they use and how they use their knowledge to find out more about the past.
A good book for younger children to use with some history topics, or for discussion with a trip to a museum.
My little one LOVED Liesbet Slegers books when she was a preschooler. In fact, the first book she ever read to me was 'Katie Goes to the Doctor.' This new title, Archeologists and What They Do, is a fun book with lots of great vocabulary and adorable illustrations.
Digging deep and discovering history turns into fact filled fun in this lovely description of what an archaeologists does.
Starting with the basics like what an archaeologist wears, this book dives into the profession and describes the various aspects of an archaeologist's job and life. From finding a place where history might be found to start the dig to labeling and categorizing, the fun and more serious sides of the profession are addressed, while keeping excitement alive.
This is my first peek at this series, and if the rest of the books are like this one, then I'm giving it a big two thumbs up. The first pages start out by directly connecting to young readers with something they can relate to. In this case, it was dress-up as a princess or a knight. Then, it quickly sweeps into the question of what things really might have been like back then (food? homes?) and dives into what might lie buried under a play area outside...everything from toys to spoons...and then, to a skeleton with a crown. It's such a lovely and playful way to draw young listeners in and gives them a way to connect to the information which follows.
The description of the archaeologist's job stays more on the excavating end of things, which is fine and really the side which captures kids' interest most. Everything from an archaeologist's clothes to tools to living quarters to a little paperwork is described in an easy to understand way and does not grow boring, either. Each page is accompanied by a simple but clear illustration to help make the details described in the text clear. Plus, every illustrations holds a joyful atmosphere, making sure the job receives a more positive vibe.
I found the information was delivered in a way that young listeners can understand and learn from. There are some aspects of the job they probably hadn't thought about before. This also ends with the reminder that artifacts are found in museums (which could tie it in so nicely with a field trip!). To top it of...and a favorite part of mine...there's a do-it-yourself activity at the end, in which kids can bury their own artifacts. And I'm sure some will want to start their own excavation attempts, too.
I see this as a great way to introduce the profession of an archaeologist to kids and see even homeschoolers enjoying this one.

I love these profession type books for small kids. My own kids were very eager to learn about different jobs and I think most young kids are fascinated by what grownups do. Being exposed to a variety of different fields of study is enriching for kids and can open them up for previously unknown possibilities.
This one is full of simple text and cute colorful illustrations. Each page shows step-by-step in simplified terms what archaeologists do and how many digs are typically built up. The book even shows some underwater archaeology. The book also includes a simple DIY activity at the back.
This would make a good choice for classroom or homeschool use or just for a fun read.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
A super cute introduction to archeology for very young kids! This book would be great for children ages 3-6 as it is simple and archeology and its daily tasks are explained well. This would be great to spur a backyard excavation activity!
Thank you NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for providing this ARC.
While the subject matter, illustrations, and information provided are all fantastic, the text is too long. Each page of text contains 3-4 pages’ worth of text. Instead of being engaged, my little reader wanted to turn the pages before I had read even half the text. 5 stars for the idea and illustration, 2 stars for the text.
Archeologists and what they do by Liesbet Slegers is an engaging book that teaches early readers about archeology. There's a bunch of new vocabulary, introduction to what the job is like, what tools are used, and what type of environments archeologists work in. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the treasure hunt activity is sure to be fun for little ones.
Many thanks to Clavis Publishing and NetGalley for the advance copy.
A cute little book to teach children about what Archeologists do. I could definitely see teachers using this one in their classrooms when they talk about careers. Even School Counselors could use this to help motivate younger students to start thinking about their futures and what things they might be interested in doing.
Wow such a fun little book about bein an archaeologist.Archeology is my favourite topic and this book gives an insight in what being an archaeologist means .
Very intriguing and interesting. This book will definitely peak interest in this field.
This is a cute book about archeologists and the things they do to find artifacts. I like that this book shows male and female archeologists. Also, it talks about the research and cataloging that archeologists must do, which is such an important part of their field. The illustrations are cute and follow along with the text pretty closely. My children enjoyed enjoyed reading this book and seeing the treasures/artifacts.
The illustrations are pretty cute but overall the book is a bit flat and not particularly memorable. It could use an injection of fun. Archaeology is cooler than this. Yes, it can be dirty and tedious, but it’s still pretty cool.
It is indeed a really cute book. It's very much suited for kids who loves to wonder what archaeologists do. I love the colors and the simplicity of the story. It's something kids will find really interesting.
