This book was a delight! I usually love books where one of the main characters is considered elderly. One of my all time favorite book series centering around an older lady is the Miss Julia books by Ann B. Ross. So when I read the synopsis of this book I knew I would enjoy it. It took a little while to get going, but I liked it much better than The Flatshare!
Eileen is a 79 year old grandmother. She's fun, active, vivacious, and totally doesn't seem like a typical lady closing in on 80. Leena is her Granddaughter living in London. They decide they are tired of their usual circumstances and decide to switch lives. This is told in alternating chapters between the two women, and I found myself loving Eileen's chapters the most. Eileen is newly divorced after a crappy marriage, and ready to dip into the world of online dating. She lives with Leena's flatmates and she is just a hoot! Leena is going to look after her Grandmother's home and jump into all the activities Eileen usually has going on. I love Eileen's older neighbors and the neighborhood watch group.
This book is full of emotions and gave me all the feels. It's funny and light-hearted, but each of the women has their own obstacles to overcome. It also explores things such as mental health, loss, and difficult family and domestic issues.

I love Beth O'Leary.
Leena Cotton blows a big presentation at work and is ordered to take a 2 month sabbatical. She decides to visit her grandmother Eileen in her tiny Yorkshire village, but Eileen is newly single and not finding many eligible bachelors in her tiny town, so she goes to Leena's in London. Thus begins their journeys out of their stagnant lives.
I loved the story. It focused less on romance, and more on the live's of these two women, which was okay with me.
4.5/5 stars.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing me with an ARC copy of this audio book in exchange for my honest review.
I absolutely loved this book. It was an easy going story that was fun to listen to. I often found myself laughing out loud at the characters antics. The premise is familiar to us— a classic switch between 2 people— but the story hasn’t been told before from this perspective. You will find yourself cheering out loud for 79 year old Grandma Eileen! What a great feel good story with engaging audio performing. Definitely worth a listen!
I really liked both narrators because they both brought the story to life in their own unique voices. The story was super fun and made me chuckle quite a few times while also having some emotional moments as well. Out of the two main characters in this story my favorite was most definitely Grandma Eileen. I’m saying that I didn’t enjoy Leena but Granny was definitely funnier. I knew where one particular story line was going the moment we met a certain character. Overall I give this book 4 stars.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook. This was a cute, charming story and I enjoyed the narrator, but for some reason it just didn’t hold my interest. Even though I’m not the right audience, I think many readers out there will love this title. I won’t be publishing an online review for this audiobook.
I adored this audiobook! I loved the narrator's voice and how much emotion she conveyed. The story was so sweet and really hit home for me. I loved the relationship between the Grandmother and the Granddaughter and how different yet similar their lives were. It was a fantastic read and I will deff pick up more by this author.
I feel like if this book was a movie, I would have loved it. However, it fell flat for me as a book. I just found myself craving a little more depth and a little more romance.Overall, it was adorable but I wanted more.
After the loss of her sister, Leena Cotton buried herself into work in busy London. But when she started showing obvious signs of a burn-out, her boss forces her to have a 2 months vacation. Her grandmother Eileen on the other hand is looking to expand her horizon beyond Yorkshire, in search of adventure, after her long-life partner left her.
After much consideration, they decided that the best solution, for both of them, would be to swap houses.
"The Switch" is a nice enough story, with warmth and interesting characters. I'm sorry to say I liked "the flatshare" better.
The story is told from Leena's and Eileen's point of view. The narrative was my favorite thing about the novel. I liked the voice of Eileen best. Her character was funny and lively. she is my favorite. the rest of the characters seemed a little shallow to me.
The writing is warm and easy to follow. I'm looking forward to reading more from the author.
My thanks are due to the publishers and Netgalley for this audio arc in exchange of an honest review.
A lovely feel-good story full of laughs, love and tears. I did find the eventual story line predictable but this didn't mean I didn't enjoy the journey there. The characters were amazing and the reader/listener immediately warms to them. I cried buckets when Leena spoke about her loss and applauded Eileen's zest for a new life.
As a girl from the Yorkshire Dales I'm happy that Beth O' Leary chose to shine her light on our area of the country. I do want to stress that we are not all grannies going to bingo though 😊😊
I’d like to thank the publishers and netgalley for this audio arc in exchange of an honest review.
I thought that maybe this would be something I enjoyed, but I kind of find myself thinking this wasn’t for me. Yes it’s heart warming in some ways but it’s all a bit...unrealistic. I’m not saying Londoners wouldn’t love ole ladies but I also know most people my age would really probably not want someone poking their nose in their business. I think they probably wouldn’t make any effort to get to know her. It’s sad but it’s true. Londoners just aren’t that friendly.
Other than that I found Lena pretty boring as a protagonist, but also Eileen and her sex quests didn’t do it for me at all. I don’t know, neither felt like an authentic voice of someone their age. It didn’t vibe with me.
Also could we not do weird sound effects fit someone being on the phone because it really distorts the audio. I am smart enough to know that someone is on the phone if you tell me they’re on the phone - it isn’t a radio play so why?
Anyway essentially this felt very boring and cliche hallmark movie for me. Maybe that was the goal l, but it wasn’t mine when I picked it up. As someone who recently lost a family member I thought I’d feel something but I really just didn’t.
I hoped to like this as much as I loved the Flatshare, but this was a different story. I only one of the characters and while the other had a better plot, the whole novel didn't quite meet my expectations. Some plot points didn't sit well with me, but I really liked the banter between the characters. It was still an enjoyable read.
I have enjoyed this book very much. I have already read The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary and loved it, so I had high expectations of this book as well.
The two main characters are likeable and funny. Leena Cotton is a force of nature, ambitious, warm, caring and strong, but at the moment she is struggling and feels that everything she knew is collapsing around her. To help with her problems, After a difficult moment at work, she takes a trip to her grandmother's house who lives in a tiny village in Yorkshire. Her grandmother, Eileen is in search of new love now that she is single, but the world of dating is limited in her area. Leena decides that it would be a perfect solution for both ladies to swap places and live each other's lives for one month. What could go wrong? They both embrace this adventure fully and try to make the best of it.
I have enjoyed the book and all the characters.
We’re going to go with a 4.5! I listened to this on audio and I really liked the narrators. This was such a cute read! However I would not have labeled it as a “romance” and I think that’s why I’ve heard so many mixed reviews. I think chick lit or women’s fiction would be a more appropriate genre for this book. Although there was some romance here and there it wasn’t a true romance IMO. However I loved the plot and there was great character development through out. Maybe some of the best character development I’ve ever read! I liked Eileen and Lina, LOVED Jackson and Bee. This book kept me entertained the whole time I was listening and I highly recommend!
So surprised by this one! Was not expecting to love Eileen’s side of the story over Leena’s BUT HERE WE ARE. Can’t wait to see what Beth cooks up next!
A Charming English story about a Grandmother and Granddaughter who swap lives. The main character is overworked and grieving the loss of her sister. She and her grandmother have an understanding to swap their apartment/home, their cell phones and other technology for two months. Also, I thought that is was clever that they both technically had the same name, while the granddaughter goes by Lina instead of Eileen. I very much enjoyed the two different voices for each of the two characters. Small thing that I also enjoyed was the far away phone sound when characters would talk on the phone. Throughout the story you learn more about the issues that both the Grandmother and Granddaughter as well as the people in their lives (ie. the mother, neighbors, significant others...). I would overall recommend it if you are looking for a multigenerational story that involves love, grief and seeking what you want to do with your life. Solid read.
I was very excited for Beth O'Leary new book! This is very different from her other The Flat Share. This one follows Leena who has been told needs to take a sabbatical because she has not taken vacation is years and now to much leave has built up. Lenna and her grandmother Eileen decide they should switch lives for the two months Leena needs to take off work. Eileen decided to come live in London and look for love. While Leena will look after everything in rural Yorkshire and simply just relax. But both Eileen and Leena might find love they didn't expect. This was a cute and comical duo.
I loved this book. I requested it because I also loved The Flat Share. Even though the ending was fairly predictable with Jackson and Lena, it wasn’t until about halfway through I guessed Yhevother one. With regards to the audio, I loved grandma’s accent but the narrator would ‘swallow’ a lot which was mildly annoying at times. I listened to the book at 2x speed because after years of listening that sounds normal. At some stage soon I’ll put up a non spoiler review at becsbooks.com. Overall I was very glad I listened to this and will now probably always one click Beth O’Leary after loving the first two I’ve read.
I loved this sweet story! I read the majority of The Switch as an audiobook. It's told in alternating chapters with two different voice actresses as the voices of Eileen and Leena. Some of my favorite parts were the voice actresses mimicking the voices of the other character. I highly recommend reading The Switch as an audiobook.
I love this author! Her plots are original and though its on the comical romance edge, she still manages to add a great conflict. In this case the loss of a sister gave this hilarious novel a deeper meaning.
The Switch is a novel which tells the story of Leena Cotton and her grandmother Eileen Cotton and what happens when they decide to swap lives with each other.
Leena 's life has been falling apart ever since her sister's tragic death. So when she has a breakdown in the middle of a boardroom meeting in London, her boss forces her to take a two month leave to look after her mental health.
Eileen Cotton is the soul of the Yorkshire village, she lives in. Apart from taking care of her daughter, who is still grieving the death of her child ; Eileen presides over many village activities, which she fondly calls her "little projects". But Eileen is looking for love. Unfortunately, there is hardly any eligible men available in her village!
One can well imagine the delight of the readers when these two women decide to swap lives with each other!!
It is not common to find 79 year old women in literature going on dates with strangers they met on a dating app to have a casual fling and I absolutely loved Aileen 's London adventures! The Yorkshire life that the grand daughter spends is adorable. The quaint village lanes, the long walks in the fields, Easter bunnies, May day festival, the plethora of old characters, humorous dialogues and the warmth of a community all adds to the charm of Leena's two months Spring break in Yorkshire.
The Switch had come as a warm hug in my life just when I needed it the most. Beth O'Leary has become an auto buy author for me. I highly recommend you to check out the audiobook. Alison Steadman and Daisy Edgar-Jones have done a tremendous job in bringing the characters to life with their voice performance.
