A fun, heartfelt story told from multiple perspectives, The Switch tells the story of a young professional on the verge of a breakdown and her grandmother on the verge of a new adventure. The basis of the story may seem a bit silly, a grandmother switching places with her granddaughter so one can recover and reconnect with her roots in the countryside while the other has a big-city adventure she missed out on in her youth. The execution of the story, however, is perfect. Both women learn so much about themselves and each other by letting go of what they’ve always known and taking a risk. The characters have complex and full lives and felt relatable and real, This is a perfect read for a lazy afternoon on the couch with a cup of tea.
The Switch by Beth O’Leary
Well wasn’t this just the sweetest story! I absolutely loved this audiobook. When Eileen and granddaughter Leena switch places, Eileen to find new love, and Leena to escape and get some much needed rest, they both find love in the most unexpected places. I loved both of their characters, and I loved the secondary characters as well. Such a sweet and lovable story. I can’t wait for Beth O’Leary’s next book!!
5/5 stars!
Thank you Netgalley, Macmillian audio and Beth O’Leary for my audio ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Yall! I totally loved this book. I listed to the audiobook version thanks to @netgalley! The narrator for grandma was lovely and had the best reading voice!
Ok now to the story: Definitely a feel good, love between grandmother and granddaughter book about switching cities and exploring different stages of life. I have been on a British/all things UK/London kick lately and this was right up my alley. A quick read and was easy to pick up and put back down without feeling like I couldn't remember what was going on. Now I've got the travel itch and totally want to travel across the Pond!
Beth O'Leary did a fabulous job with this one and I highly recommend for romance readers or if you're in need of a feel-good, pick me up!
The Switch is a heartwarming book that has kept me smiling days after I finished listening. Both narrators were incredibly good and gave life to this beautiful story. This story is a light read and yet it mixes in many of the hard things that many people have to deal with in life such as grief, isolation, aging, abuse and unstable mental health. Both Leena and Eileen had many obstacles to overcome during their time switching lives but each struggle made them stronger women and helped them get to know each other much better even though they were not actually together. There are many moments in their journey that had me giggling out loud. Eileen reminds me of my grandmother with all her activities and being able to make friends easily. I still cannot decide who I liked best, Leena or Eileen, both women had very likable characteristics and I enjoyed learning more about them the more I listened and miss them now that the book has ended.
I highly recommend this audiobook and am grateful to Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to an ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.
This was such a fun story that I would have loved it whether I listened to it or read it! Swapping lives with my grandmother is something I would never want to do, but this book made it fun. I was entertained and delighted the whole time. You will be too! For a lighthearted, fun summer read - listen to this! Thanks to NetGalley and McMillian Audio for the advanced reader's copy. The opinions are my own.
Sadly, The Switch turned out to not be my cup of tea. I could not really connect with the story or the characters. I wanted to enjoy this so much; however, it was just a dud (for me).
I love all of Beth’s books and couldn’t wait to listen to The Switch. I loved every minute and think this is the perfect feel good book to read in the current climate. Fantastic.!
Loved it!! Listening to this audiobook is such a different experience and it truly feel like you're hearing the story as if a friend is telling you what happened.
Totally recommend!
I'm speachless, this book is so beautiful!
I read this book in a physical copy before listening to it and now I don't know how to exprime myself and my emotions.
The two readers are incredibly good, listening to them telling the story of Eileen and Leena feels like being part the book (well, in this case audiobook).
The author is really talented and I love her writing style, infact this isn't my first O'leary's book beacuse I also read The Flatshare and loved it as much as I love this one.
At first The Switch may seems just a funny romance book, but it is a lot more: it talks about mourning, pain, the stages of grief and the " romance part" is very small and recounted just at the end of the book.
I really want to recomment this book - and the previous one- to everyone because Beth O'leary is a really great author and I can't wait to read - or listen- her next book.
Did not get a chance to download the audiobook before it was archived (this was when the NetGalley app was first released, so there were some glitches), so I can not provide a review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the free ARC audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
What a charming novel! I really enjoyed the cast of interesting characters and the intergenerational dynamics. I also liked that while romance was part of the story, it wasn't the whole story and definitely took a back seat to many other interesting themes, such as aging, family, friendship and community, along with more challenging topics like grief, isolation, mental health, and abuse.
The audio was great, with different voice actors for Eileen (Grandma) and Leena (Granddaughter). I wish there were more novels with stories about people over 60 years old. I truly enjoyed Eileen's story more than Leena's.
I look forward to reading other novels by Beth O'Leary!
I loved this book! Not as much as the Flatshare, but I really thought this was fun and refreshing. I’m looking forward to the Road Trip!
The Switch, Beth O’Leary’s follow up to The Flatshare, did not disappoint. Again, it’s a story from two perspectives - a granddaughter and a grandmother.
The story is predictable, warm and funny, full of endearing characters, and an absolute joy to read. But — and this is what makes it special — it’s not all puff and fluff. As she did in The Flatshare, O’Leary weaves in some beautiful layers that add an unexpectedly rich texture to an already wonderful narrative.
Enjoyed this audiobook - Following the loss of a loved one, a grandmother and her granddaughter decide to trade lives for two months because they are both in need of a change that will hopefully put their lives back on track . It was a fun, lighthearted and cute read.
Charming and atmospheric.
Didn’t love this as much as her first; missed the humor and a stronger emotional connection to and between the characters (outside of Leena/Eileen).
The romance had potential but lacked time and development.
★★★½
Beth O' Leary can truly do no wrong in my eyes. She writes the most heartwarming and beautiful books. This was my second time reading this book and it was just as great as an audiobook. This is a great story of Leena taking a sobbatical from work, and her grandmother who wants a second chance at love. They end up swapping lives and live in eachothers houses. This is such a heartwarming and addictive story that just makes you want to hold the book and just reflect for hours after.
This was such a charming book with quaint settings and quaint characters. I enjoyed reading this and found myself laughing out loud as often as I was touched with sentiment.
Beth O’Leary consistently gives readers books to gobble up! I love the feeling of reading a book that I can’t get enough of and am sad when it’s over.
5 stars!!
Thank you #netgalley and #FlatironBooks for an advanced copy of #TheSwitch in excahnge for my honest opinion,
I already loved Beth O'Leary's first book, so I was eagerly anticipating her second. What another gem! THE SWITCH happens between grandmother and granddaughter, where they each take a break from their lives to move to the city/country. I particularly loved the grandmother's perspective, she was so well written and had so much love to give.
A great audiobook as well! The narrator's were enjoyable to listen to and brought the book alive. Highly recommend!
The Switch~
Love the relationship between the Grandmother and the Granddaughter. Truly a nice story about love, loss and family. Great selection for the narrators for this book.
Thanks NetGalley for this Audiobook.
This book was the perfect covid listen. It was sweet, light, and well written. I really enjoyed both of the main characters. I would definitely recommend this to friends.
