I don't usually listen to audio because I find that I get distracted very easily, but when I got this audio from Netgalley I decided I’d give it a try and it 👏🏻 was 👏🏻 amazing. The narrators’ voices were fabulous. I found that it brought the story to life much more accurately than I would have been able to if I had read the novel. The disguised voice was SO CREEPY. I loved it. I also absolutely loved how each section ended with a mind blowing statement.
I LOVED how all of the characters’ behaviors made you think that they were the killer at some point.
I was scared while listening to this one. Not gonna lie to you. That’s probably another reason why I don’t usually listen to thrillers on audio. I used to think reading all these thrillers would prepare me if I was ever put in a scary situation, but I was wrong. Dead wrong. After listening to this, I know I would just freeze and be petrified.
My advice: LISTEN TO THIS ONE IN OCTOBER WITH A COMFY BLANKET, SURROUNDED BY PUMPKINS, and DRINKING A PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE. Or a pumpkin cream cold brew because IT IS LIFE. 🍂🍁☕️🎃
I absolutely love Alice Feeney, and her latest book did not let me down. I appreciate that just when you think the story is over, she throws another twist your way to keep you on your toes. Great book, and I loved the audio version!
I want to thank the publisher for granting me copies of both the audiobook and the novel. My preferred method of reading is to listen to the audiobook and follow along with the text, so having both made me particularly grateful--even though the audio quality in all the ARCs I have listened to leave a lot to be desired, which was particularly grating during the parts of this book where the killer's voice was altered. The audiobook is narrated by Stephanie Racine (who has narrated Feeney's previous novels) and Richard Armitage (who I associate mostly with reading classics) and they both do a phenomenal job in bringing to life the book's narrators.
As for the book itself, I was hooked by the hers (Anna Harper) and his (Anna's ex-husband DCI Jack harper) narrations. I loved how switching back and forth gave added layers to the mystery by prolonging the suspense and giving the reader limited knowledge of the events at hand. I also loved all the red herrings, the clues were perfectly crafted by the author to create confusion among both the characters in the book and the readers of the novel.
So why the three-star rating. I hated the ending. I can't go into it without spoiling it, but it went on too long; left too many questions open; and, quite frankly, I was not fully satisfied with who the murderer was.

I am always a sucker for a good suspense/thriller book. As soon as I saw the premise for His & Hers, I was intrigued. Almost halfway through, I thought I knew exactly where the story was headed. I thought I had it all figured out, but I was so wrong. There were several twists and surprises and I definitely did not expect the ending that I got. I thoroughly enjoyed it. At a time where it has been hard for me to find a book that not only interests me, but holds my interest from beginning to end, this story did exactly that. I've been struggling with finishing books and finding ones that I truly enjoy and I'm glad that I found His & Hers.
The two narrators did a great job of bringing their characters to life so to speak. It was very easy to get sucked into the story... into the suspense and mystery of it all. It had me guessing and on the edge of my seat all the way through. Those 10½ hours went by very quickly.
RATING: 4½ OUT OF 5.
This audiobook is well read with both voices of the story as well as the distorted voice of the killer so that you can’t figure out who it is by the sound. The story is suspenseful and keeps one guessing about who the murderer is. It is a book that is better in audio format. I recommended it to a colleague for her “weekly reads” video.
Anna Andrews has worked hard to become the TV anchor for BBC’s lunchtime news. She is very proud of her position, in fact she has put it ahead of everything else in her life. So when someone threatens that role she will do anything to safe her job. What she doesn't expect is to be asked to cover a story back in the small town she grew up in. When she gets back there she finds out the person who was murderer is actually someone she knew. The longer she stays in town, she begins to feel she isn't just covering the story but that she is a part of it.
DCI Jack Harper use to live in London but now he is a detective in Blackdown. A place where he never thought he would be investigating a murder. When a body turns up he decides not to tell anyone he knows the woman. But quickly regrets the decision when things begin to turn and it begins to look like he is being framed for everything that is happening around town.
I listened to His & Hers on audiobook, and I can not recommend it enough. It is told from alternating perspective. Between Anna, Jack and a third party that is using an audio voice distorter. It is because of this third party that I thought the story was so well meant for audiobook. I was quickly drawn into the story because each character had their own narrator and I wanted to figure out who did what, who knew what and who was keeping secrets.
Alice Feeney did a great job of building up all the characters not just Anna and Jack, but the side characters as well. Not to mention the town of Blackdown. Which was small and charming, but had an excellent creepy vibe to it. I was guessing through out the book on who could be the murderer, who knew what, and who might die. Very rarely was I right about anything! There where many surprises and shocks so it kept me guessing a lot and I loved it. This has been my favourite book that Alice Feeney has written so far.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a mystery thriller, and would suggest the audiobook to anyone who likes them or for someone who wanted to try audiobooks out.
Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the copy of the audiobook. All opinions and the review are my own.
This book focuses on ex-spouses, he is a detective, she is a news reader/reporter. They both have a dark past, and become involved in the investigation/reporting of a murder in their hometown. The killer is the third narrator in a very scary electronically-altered voice. Chapters in the book alternate between these 3 narrators' perspectives.
It's a long book with just enough ancillary stories to make it a very complex mystery. Just when you think you know who the killer is, something will change your mind. And, that happens more than once! So, a really fascinating mystery.
The one thing I didn't like was a bit too much graphic violence, particularly that with animals. I think the book could have been fine with a little less description of these things.
I couldn't get more than about 30 minutes into this audiobook because I really disliked the narrator, especially the male narrator. It's a shame because the book looks like a good one, but I just didn't want that voice in my head.
This was really fun and my favourite Alice Feeney! It maybe wasn't all believable, but definitely a wild ride. Read for an unpredictable and twisty 'whodunnit' 🙌🏼 3.5 stars
This book blew me away! I was unable to but it down. Perfect, dazzlingly, very well written. The details the author described throughout the book was so amazing. The characters and storyline were fantastic. The ending I did not see coming Truly Amazing and appreciated the whole story. This is going to be a must read for many many readers. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! No spoilers. Beyond amazing I enjoyed this book so very much. The characters and storyline were fantastic. The ending I did not see coming Could not put down nor did I want to. Truly Amazing and appreciated the whole story. This is going to be a must read for many many readers. Maybe even a book club pick.
I haven’t read anything by Alice Feeney before but, oh my goodness, His & Hers will most certainly not be the last. There are serial killer books and then there are serial killer books but this one stands head and shoulders above many that I’ve read before.
I can’t say much without giving away important plot details but let me just say that the author has done a masterful job of creating characters of such depth that none are completely good or bad (or perhaps I should say most are not) and none can be 100% trusted (I was especially intrigued by Jack’s young colleague, Priya). Ms. Feeney has also developed a high-tension plot that has a dramatic backstory and is largely dependent on all the bodies that keep showing up; the reader has a pretty good idea of who is going to end up being those bodies but guessing the killer’s identity is something else entirely. Twice—twice!—I was sure I had the murderer pegged and, both times, I was wrong. Boy, was I wrong.
There are three points of view here and the narrators handle them beautifully, Richard Armitage for Detective Jack Harper and Stephanie Racine for TV news personality Anna Andrews. The third POV is that of the killer but that voice is cleverly disguised electronically so the listener can’t tell if it’s a man or a woman and also can’t tell if it might be one of the two protagonists. Nice touch!
Serial killer stories aren’t for everyone but if, like me, you find them interesting and compelling, His & Hers is one you won’t want to miss. As for me, I’m adding it to my list of Best Books read in 2020.

Helloooo thriller! If you have the opportunity to listen to this on audiobook, do it! I'm sure a physical copy is nice to have & to hold, but the narrators for this read were 🙌🏼 and the use of a voice changer was 👌🏼.
.
A woman ends up brutally murdered & while a reporter and detective (who happen to be ex husband & wife) are there to cover the case, they don't want their existing links to the dead woman to come to light. One has to wonder why...🤔
.
Both Anna & Jack are great characters! They will have you laughing at their most unapologetic, twisted thoughts & I loved that.
.
Having the story relayed from two alternating perspectives had me believing & doubting both Anna & Jack til the last couple of pages. 😅 The red herrings were well done as I tried to (((unsuccessfully))) figure out who the hell was the killer. I love it when I don't guess correctly along the way, but....here it comes...the killer was hard to believe. I'm sorry! I know there were plenty of people who loved that ending & I'll continue to recommend it because the book itself is a four star read, but once you get the answer you've been waiting for, you'll either love it or hate it & I have no control over that. 😁 May the odds be ever in your favor!
Sad to say, this book is going into a file I call the "wish I had liked it more" While I did like the back and forthing of the characters as each tells their story, I found many of the things depicted to be over the top coincidences that had me shaking my head and doing the dreaded rolling the eyes routine.
Not sure as some have said if I read the same book as others but, the ending was in a word. or maybe two, ridiculous, bizarre and had the believably facto of zero.
So this book was definitely not for me.
Thank you to Netgalley for free audio of this story.
OK. This one had me stumped. Well done @alicewriterland - I was suspicious of almost everyone - thought I knew the killer - and then when it was revealed - completely surprised.😮.
.
His & Hers follows Anna and Jack - Anna who is a TV News presenter and Jack - a police detective. When a woman is found murdered - Anna is sent to cover the story. She is reluctant to head to this sleepy town - and you find out why as her past is gradually revealed. Each chapter in this book takes you on a completely new path and the red herrings are expertly.🤯.
.
My third ever audio book and ... I actually enjoyed it. The voice actors were great and the third mysterious voice gives you all the creep factors. Each chapter switches between Anna, Jack and the killer - and the back and forth keeps you so intrigued. Saying much more about this book may give it away so ... if you are looking for a thriller that will literally leave you guessing to the very end - pick this one up. Thank you to @netgalley and @macmillan.audio for this copy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Excellent book. Well written and well read.
Complex and challenging the twist at the end is quite shocking and I did not see it coming at all.
Thank you to Netgalley for this copy in exchange for an honest review (although I ended up buying a copy to review as I didn't download in time)
A BBC TV news presenter, Anna Andrews has come up in life. Hailing from a deprived background, her father deserted the family, leaving her mother to clean homes in the village to earn a living. Her job and the success that is hers means a lot to her.
Having spent long years as a correspondent, Anna gets the opportunity to present the afternoon news after Cat Jones, the actual presenter, goes off suddenly on maternity leave. Two years later, when Anna expects her contract to be renewed, she finds herself suddenly relegated to the position of news correspondent when Cat returns.
A day later, she is called back to work because Cat is unreachable. When she shows up to work at the request of the Thin Controller, she finds Cat already there.
It is Cat who suggests that Anna head to the village of Blackdown, her hometown, where there has been a murder.
Detective Chief Inspector Jack Harper and his assistant Priya Patel are called to the scene of a brutal murder. A local woman, Rachel Hopkins, has been killed in the woods. The principal of the local girl’s school, Helen Wang, is found brutally murdered the following day, and Zoe Harper, another local woman, who also happened to be Jack’s sister, is found brutally murdered the day after. Will Jack be able to solve the case or will the body count rise again?
Both Anna and Jack have had a close association with the characters in the case and everything seems to point towards them. Jack stands in danger of becoming a suspect in his own murder investigation, having been the last to see Rachel for a sexual fling.
The story comes to us in three voices, hers (the PoV of Anna Andrews) and his (that of Jack Harper) in alternate chapters and both accounts hold secrets. That they were once married becomes known to us soon enough. They have been estranged since the death of their baby girl, Charlotte, at just three months of age. They have been divorced since then.
Both accounts go heavy on the foreshadowing and so my expectations were quite high. Both characters face thwarted ambitions. Both the leading characters have a lot in common. Both have had casual sex. Both their jobs carry enormous stress, and expose them to ugly things that cannot be unseen. Both had guilty secrets they had to hide, secrets dating back to their pasts.
The PoVs of Anna and Jack are broken occasionally by the voice of the unidentified murderer, which was extremely creepy. The artiste has probably used some software to disguise the voice, but the effect was quite horrible. The voice actually grated on my ears.
The quotes, generalisations of truth that apply to all of us, are numerous and I enjoyed them. Anna’s back story comes out well.
The characters were all drawn out well. Although I didn’t like Anna, she came across as too insensitive at the beginning, she did draw me into getting to know her story. Perhaps that was because of her drinking and resultant forgetfulness. In her first chapter, Anna can’t remember having baked the cupcakes that she is taking to work. I’m a little fed up of characters that have a drinking problem and can’t remember crucial events of their day.
The only characters I liked were Jack and, to an extent, Anna’s mother, who did everything she could for her daughter. I found Priya, Jack’s assistant, very interesting, not only because she is a character of Indian origin (Bonus points for showcasing diversity) but also because she is doggedly determined to pursue the case, even though she gives the impression of being small and helpless.
This thriller kept me engaged throughout. Each chapter ends on a cliffhanger, keeping us hooked. The author has successfully played out the themes of broken relationships, guilt and love, against the backdrop of murder.
The author does a great job of ratcheting up the pace and tension and creating a real sense of danger.
The description of the sex, while not graphic, is nevertheless disturbing. As are the descriptions of the murders which are brutal.
The only thing I couldn’t quite get a handle on was the murderer. Of course, why the person killed and killed again is explained very well, but how they could kill with so much brutality remains unanswered. I’m not talking just about the rationale, but how they went about it, which seems unbelievable.
This was my first experience with an audiobook. In this case, there were serious issues with the audio. I found that if I let one section (chapters were called sections, for some reason) end and the next one begin automatically, it would invariably skip one section in between. The best thing to do was to go through the navigation bar and manually click on each new section at the end of the previous one. This marred the experience slightly, during the first few chapters. It was only when I understood what was happening and figured out the trick, that the listening experience went on smoothly.
I liked Stephanie’s voice from the beginning. The pace, the enunciation, the pauses, they were all done right. Her voice was perfect for Anna’s narration.
Stephanie sounded so different for the parts spoken by the Thin Controller. It’s a subtle change that lets on that a different character is speaking but it makes such a great difference to the listening experience. I was particularly thrilled to hear the voice of recognition that she came up with when Anna’s mother, asleep in her home, wakes up and recognises her daughter.
Richard does a great job of distinguishing between Jack’s voice and Priya’s. Loud, he was Jack; a little muted, he was Priya, for the asides, the intonation changed once again. It was amazing how he switched voices at a moment’s notice.
I would definitely like to recommend this one.
Excellent thriller and I loved the audio version. I wasn’t a fan of the authors previous work but I will definitely continue reading her books in the future.
This is a dark, creepy thriller about the many sides of the story - his and hers, lies and truth - and everyone and everything between.
Murder in the sleepy Blackdown prompts DCI Jack Harper to action - and his ex-wife Anna Andrews to return. As the murders are adding and the killer/s are seemingly in the know of Anna and Jack's every moves, should they start digger? Is the answer in the past? Or it is in the present?
While I love many parts of the story - like the idea of the more POVs, some clues and the quite wise use of the creepy factor - this thriller does not work for me. Some reviewers praise that they did not see the ending twist coming - but in my books I consider this a fault. I like to turn back and see the clues and the picture, I like the witty settings which can blind me - but when I turn back, I like to see the way. Here, the ending feels random and the plotting feels over-speculated; especially when it comes to the killer/s capabilities. Also, the details in the story does not add to the internal logic - for example, the police seem does not work at all or they are very lazy with the clues; and the reporter characters are especially dimwitted when it comes to their past.
As for the narration - I think that the narrators did a splendid job, esppecially Stephanie Racine added some colours into the storytelling. I have enjoyed their narrations.
Thanks to the Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the ARC. The opinins presented are solely my own.
Wow! I loved this thriller. It kept me guessing the whole time. I did not expect the ending. I’ve read a ton of thrillers so for it to end unexpectedly is a big deal. The audiobook was done wonderfully, Highly suggest,!
I downloaded this through the Netgalley Shelf app last month and finally got into this weekend. It’s told through three voices–a super creepy voice for the killer, who goes into detail about each murder after it happens.
Him-Jack, a police officer who had ties to the victims and suspects and is (Her) aka Anna Andrews’ ex-husband.
Her-Anna Andrews. She’s been the face of a popular BBC news program for two years while the former host was on back-to-back maternity leaves. She shows up one day out of the blue and resumes her former role, while Anna gets bumped back into a correspondent role.
This book was SO twisty. I stayed up well past midnight (so about two hours past my bedtime) because I HAD to know what happened! You will absolutely be guessing until the last few pages. I just KNEW I had it figured out so many times. Even if you think you know, you have no idea… 😉 The last two hours of audio was so heart-racingly good I had to force myself to chill several times.
