This is the first audiobook that I've ever reviewed.

An alcoholic news anchor called Anna Andrews who will do anything for her career.
There is a murder in Blackdown, a tiny little village in Surrey and Anna is sent to be the correspondent for the BBC. Anna desperately does not want to cover this story but there is no way out and that is when we discover that Anna actually grew up in Blackdown.

DCI Jack Harper now works and lives in Blackdown where he misses the excitement of working in the city and still misses his wife. Jack is quietly pleased that something has finally happened in Blackdown although he is suspicious of Anna and her involvement and then Jack himself becomes a suspect.

This shows us how there are always two sides to the story . . and sometimes even more.

The narrators were fine but I am not sure that audiobooks are for me.

There is something about Alice Feeney's plots that deprive me of the pleasure of actually loving her stories. Because I am already head over heels with her writing style, the way she puts the words together, her similes and the precision by which she delivers the narrator's feelings. But her plots?!!!!

I faced the same issue with Sometimes I Lie. A tad too much complexity, one coincidence too many, a bit of complexity that snatches all sympathy away from this character or that.

I'm not the kind of reader who seeks a likeable character to root for. I don't even know what constitutes "likeable" or what is deemed likeable; it's too vague a term to judge by it. I'd rather feel the urgency of the plot, the claw marks of the story. Here it was hankered down by too many complexities that left plot holes here and there among too many coincidences and past grievances and red herrings that it became unrealistic and sometimes even redundant. I listened to the end, so I believe I liked it a bit, but I wanted to love it the way I love Feeney's writing.

As for the narrators, I recognized Stephanie Racine's voice because she also narrated Sometimes I Lie, which I also read/listened to as audio. She seemed slightly too jovial in the beginning (before the bad news hit). And although I love Richard Armitage's baritone narrations, this was just not his best work. He was disinterested for a while before he fell into the rhythm of the story.

CW: rape, animal mutilation, graphic violence.

There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means someone is always lying.

I borrowed the above description from the publisher because it is the perfect encapsulation of this fantastic read. Anna Andrews has worked her way up the BBC hierarchy and has occupied the noon newsreader desk for two years. The previous newsreader has been on maternity leave for two years, and Anna has put her possible return out of her mind. All that changes when she does return, and Anna is relegated to lowly correspondent again. Anna jumps at a news story, because she needs to get her career on track, and she doesn't want to face the humiliation. A woman has been killed in the small village of Blackdown, but no one at the BBC knows that it is Anna's home village, a place that she fled at 16-years-old. DCI Jack Harper left London a year earlier to work in Blackdown, a place where nothing ever happens. Both Jack and Anna have connections to the victim that run deep and are longstanding.

The whole notion of the unreliable narrator is one that I enjoy but has been somewhat overdone in recent years. Not so in His and Hers, as told in Anna's and Jack's voices, with the killer's voice as well. It is brilliantly plotted and kept me guessing at every turn. I was always wrong when I narrowed down who I thought the killer was. I don't usually care for multiple narrators on audiobooks, but I don't see how it could be done as well without three voices. I am a big fan of Richard Armitage's narrations, and Stephanie Racine equals him.

I mentally subtracted 1/2 star for an incident of animal cruelty that I thought was not necessary, but that is something I can't tolerate. So I added the 1/2 star back, but I believe a sensitive reader should be aware of it. Also, if it's bedtime and you are nearly at the end of the novel, you might as well keep on reading! I couldn't get it out of my head.

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Flatiron Books for a free audiobook copy. The opinions are my own.

His And Hers By Alice Feeney
Sometimes I Lie, by this author is one of my favourite audiobooks, so I was delighted to start this. Having bought the ebook first, I ended up listening to it on audio, and was glad I did.
The storyline was fantastic, and kept me guessing right to the end. Having formed multiple theories from the beginning, all I can say is I got it wrong.
Seeing Stephanie Racine and Richard Armitage were the narrators for this was the icing on the cake. I have struggled a bit with audiobooks lately, but listened to this for 3 hours yesterday and two hours today, just dying to see how it ended.
Really enjoyed this

This was very, very good and supremely entertaining. Knocking it down a star because I saw one of the twists coming, and because something about the ending felt off to me. I'd still recommend it, though!

Wow! This is a psychological thriller, a murder mystery, and a rollercoaster of a read! Narrators Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine did an excellent job as the His and the Hers. And the few inserts of the killer's voice was menacingly terrifying - extremely creepy! I highly recommend the audio version of this novel. This is a character-driven novel. Usually, I do not like novels with so many unlikeable characters but this has proven to be an exception. All the characters are untrustworthy, evasive, and downright conniving. Bt this just added to the overall creepiness vibe of this novel. It is fast-paced and hard to put down. I thought I had it figured out several times when a wicked twist would flip me sideways. I said "Wow" as I finished it - it is well worth the read especially if you like creepy psychological thrillers. The audio version so enhanced the eeriness - it is the way to go for this novel - definitely not to be missed!

This book was amazing. The disguised voice scared me every time and I may have said a bunch of bad words out loud when I found out the killer. You may think that you have it all figured out and what is going on and you think that you have all the dots put together but you won't until the very last chapter.

Worth going into blind, I think if you know too much it would take away the thrill.

Told from multiple perspectives we are taken on a wild ride that spans 20 years. It was a good quick read and was fun to see how everything wraps up in the end. I was right in my final guess but I didnt see the journey at all.

A huge thank you to Net Galley & Macmillan Audio publishing for this audio book in exchange for a honest review.

So to begin with this was my first ever audio book. We recently purchased a home which is a 35 minute drive to work now- which WOOO means I finally get to listen to audio books. I was always a bit apprehensive to try audio books since I thought I needed to read and see the words to make them stick; and while that was true in the beginning chapters of this book. Let's just say by the end I most likely looked a bit erratic driving around yelling at the characters from the book.
*
His & Hers is narrated in two parts- His- being DC Jack Harper & Hers- BBC TV presenter Anna Andrews. As the story progresses you go back and forth between him & her telling the story of what is happening in Blackdown. You see it started with Anna covering the story of a dead woman- Rachel Hopkins... You see at one point in their former term days Rachel and Anna were close friends. Some would say even best friends until the night of Anna's 16th birthday. Clearly something terrible happened that day- and as the story unravels and more bodies from the night turn up, you'll find yourself looking over your shoulder for the killer.
Alice Feeney has an amazing way of reeling her readers in, and keeping us on the line. I was looking forward to making multiple trips back and forth (still in the process of moving so lots of trips to move everything- at one point had to kick the fiancé out of riding with me just so I could finish the book. HA) I needed to know who the killer was. At one point in the story I was ping ponging every time she threw a red herring our way. I can honestly say I suspected nearly everyone BUT the murderer- which always let me know I just experienced a great novel.

Fast paced thriller! As soon as you think you have it figured out there’s a final twist in this exciting murder mystery centering on former school classmates. Some parts were pretty disturbing but it kept me guessing throughout. I liked the alternating chapters between his story and hers.

I like stories with opposing viewpoints represented, and this was especially interesting in this case, with the two narrators.

Really enjoyed this twisty book. Fun surprise ending. Well developed characters and nicely interwoven past and present storylines.

I wasn't completely sold on this book at the beginning, but by the end I was hooked! Definitely love the different perspectives and the different narrators. I stayed up until the middle of the night because I couldn't stop listening to the audiobook! Definitely recommend!!

"Tell a person they're wrong, and they'll cover their ears. Tell a person they're right, and they'll listen to you all day long."

Like the most used quote for this book everyone's experiences of an event will differ based off how they see and experience it. That's why witnesses may not see the same thing. The story may be different told from different people.

High school is a difficult few years of hierarchies, peer pressure, judgements, teasing, bullying and torment which is the worst of it.  It's like a quarantine for the most cruel years of our lives before they are thrust into the real world with the rest of us, not knowing anything about actual reality.

This group of mean girls were each horrible in their own ways. Who knows what caused their horribleness neglect, abuse, learned behavior passed down. They each interacted with the main character as if they were teaching her valuable lessons in how to be a woman.

I love when you think you know the story and who the characters are based off what you've learned then you get flashbacks of events that happened that change your mind.

There were so many motivations for every character. So many traumatic events that you could believe that each of them could've broken and done these acts.

The murderer was quite a surprise to me. And I love when I didn't know. Also got chills a few times.  I think I said ooh I knew it was them three times. I'm definitely gullible and prone to suggestion. I'd make a horrible witness.

I recommend for those who love twisted and twisty psychological thrillers but pay close attention to the details.

Listening to it, I found the format of going between Jack and Anna enjoyable and the characters, I don't feel particularly sorry for, maybe for the last victim and the children they all left behind.

Trigger warning: abuse (sexual, physical, drug, alcohol, animal)

Though this book started a bit slow, it got very twisty at the end & definitely surprised me! I did not enjoy the voice of the 3rd narrator in the audiobook...a little too creepy!

This was an intriguing listen! My biggest critique is that I did not like the "third" voice - a different narrator would be better in that role. But the story pulled me in, kept me guessing and I do recommend it!

This was my first fictional audio-book. I normally listen to autobiographies or true crime, so I was nervous I wouldn't be able to keep up with the story compared to reading an actual book.

I did not need to worry as I was so pleasantly surprised at just how much this held my attention and how well it worked as an audio-book.

Initially the 'mystery' voice put me off and I thought it be would be too distracting, however as the story develops the harshness and contrast of the mystery voice really adds to the suspense and tension.

The twists just kept coming with this one, over and over again. You actually don't find out who the killer is until the very final chapter. One, of the rare occasions where I didn't see the ending coming. As each possible killer is revealed I 100% bought that they were the actual killer and I was saying "I knew it" a lot of the way through.

A great suspenseful thriller for those readers who love to be kept guessing.

Absolutely loved this one! It lived up to all of the hype! This audio version was great. The narrators were easy to follow and perfect for the characters. Fast paced and intriguing- 4.5 stars!

The story is told through three POVs and the narrators have done a very good job. The plot twist though a bit far fetched is good. The story slowed in the middle but the conclusion made up for it. A good thriller.
