Alice Feeney has written another scary psychological thriller. I love the way she slowly and carefully develops her characters, providing tidbits of information and background that make each character a suspect in the crime(s). She wrote many red herrings and misdirections into the book - to the point that I thought that every character could have been the perpetrator. This combined to make this a suspenseful mystery with well thought out and executed plot.
I liked how she connected each of the victims to Anna, and one victim even wrote Anna's name (in blood) on a wall near her murder. The author also added coincidences and "chance" events which pointed (or seemed to point) to the perp... I continually guessed the perp, but was wrong, and then guessed again...again, I was wrong. And so it went. Who did it? Why? How did s/he gain access to the victim????? Oh, yes, there are 3 sides to every story - yours, mine and the truth!
The killer's voice was disguised and it was eerie because one couldn't tell if if was male or female, young or old. (Great device) Add to this, the killer's statement "I did what I had to do" and I was wishing that I had the ebook so I could reread the crimes.
I had to deduct a star for 2 reasons. The first was the animal cruelty - really not necessary to the plot, although it did point to one of the victims. The second was the sexual assault which was the pivotal issue to the motive. It was graphic and heartbreaking.
I listened to the book on Net Galley's new app and wish I had asked for the ebook as there were many lines that I wanted to refer back to, and several plot twists that I needed to reread. Also the book skipped chapters and back-tracked a few times and that was confusing (especially with the complicated plot).
Thank you NetGalley and Flatiron Books for the opportunity to read this twisty mystery.
I want to thank NetGalley, the publisher, and author Alice Feeney for providing me with an ARC/audiobook of the title His & Hers!
This was so, so sadly a DNF read for me. I got through 60% of the audiobook, and I just couldn't get into it! I gave it more than enough time to get better, but I just found my mind continuously wandering while it was on. Some parts were good, but then I was right back to being distracted.
I'll give this three stars because I didn't finish it, maybe it gets better? But I just couldn't see wasting any more time on it.
Thank you again to those named above for the chance to listen to this audiobook early!
Wow! I mean WOW! I haven’t enjoyed a thriller novel in quite a while and this one absolutely shocked me. The story is told from 2 separate points of view and follows a series of murders in a small English town. Now if you like British crime shows then this will be right up your alley (aka if you’re a fan of Broadchurch then you need this book in your life). I don’t want to give anything away so just read it! OR listen to it. I listened to the audiobook instead of reading it and it made me really look forward to my morning and evening walks. There is a third POV that enters the narrative in a creepy and mysterious voice, amplifying the entire listening experience. I’m telling you I got stares from passerby’s during my walks because I was constantly gasping in shock.
So if you’re going to read one thriller this year, make sure it’s this one. You won’t regret it!!
It was definitely him. No wait, it was her, or her, or her. Every time that I was sure I had it figured out, this book threw in another twist. Loved the three person narration of Jack, Anna, and a very creepy sounding killer. I'm always here for a story that keeps me guessing until the very end.
I love surprises, and boy do they come fast and furious – and ever so cleverly – in His and Hers.
Anna, the ‘her’ in this riveting story, is not particularly nice. She also has a bit of a drinking problem. Is she another of those ‘unreliable narrators’ that made Alice Feeney’s debut novel (Sometimes I Lie) such a huge success? I had no idea right up until the end whether to believe Anna’s side of the story. In fact, Feeney is such an accomplished writer that she kept me guessing about everything all the way through this intriguing story.
‘His’ side of the story belongs to DCI Jack Harper, now based in sleepy Blacktown.
When a glamorous, cheating fundraiser is found murdered, Jack investigates. He’s intimately involved in the murder, though, and may even be a suspect. Anna is also entangled in a number of ways; as a BBC correspondent she’s sent to cover the murder and she shares a past with both the victim and Jack.
More murders ensue, and it was a massive mystery to me who would be next, and of course, who was behind them all. Feeney really set me up. I constantly changed my mind about the culprit. Feeney gives us a whole cast of characters that all seem to have had the opportunity and/or the motive. We also hear the murderer’s thoughts throughout the book. In the audio version, this was cleverly done using a voice changer, so as not to give anything away.
This is a brilliant whodunnit, involving a whole cast of dysfunctional characters and relationships, which builds up to a hugely exciting climax. Even at that point there could have been at least four people that could be guilty in my mind. Bravo Alice Feeney! A brilliant novel which apparently is soon to be a major TV series.
This is the first audiobook I've listened to. I'd heard lots about this book, so thought I'd give it a try. Although I did tend to get distracted while listening, I enjoyed the narrators' interpretation of the characters.
I thought the story was a bit far-fetched in places, and the two main characters weren't very likable. There were some good twists, though, and the tension towards the end kept me gripped. I liked the 3rd unknown narrator, and enjoyed trying to figure out who it was.
Overall, I enjoyed listening to it, and will try more audiobooks in the future. Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this free copy.

His and Hers - Alice Feeney (audiobook) @alicewriterland
There are two sides to a story... his and hers!
A woman is killed and found in a Blackdown woods. DCI Jack Harper, is investigating the case when he recognises the victim as Rachel, who he had been sleeping with in his car the previous night.
Jack decides not to tell anyone he knows the victim.
Anna Andrews, Jack's ex wife, is assigned to investigate and report on the murder. Anna doesn't necessarily want to return to Blackdown due to her past. Turns out the victim is one of Anna's childhood friends.
As you listen to the audio book, you find out about Anna's past with her childhood group of friends.
Someone isn't telling the truth...
REVIEW;
Buddy read with @booksinthebath_reviews41
This was my first audiobook, I came across a few good reviews on Instagram and I noticed the audiobook was available on netgalley. So I thought I would give it a try.
This audiobook was a great start to trying them out for the first time.
The first chapter freaked me out a little bit due to creepy voice but this all tied into the storyline.
I listened to the audiobook very quickly and enjoyed every chapter of it.
Being my first audiobook, I found at first I struggled to concentrate but as it went on I really enjoyed as I could listen whilst doing other things!
The story had me guessing all the way through. I thought I had it figured out but then there were more twists and turns right throughout!
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't listened yet!
When it comes to suspense, Alice Feeney never disappoints. His & Hers takes readers on a roller coaster ride full of dips, twists and turns. The alternating narrators are Anna, a reporter covering a murder in the small town where she grew up and Jack, the police detective investigating said murder. Both narrators have ties to both the community and the victim, which are revealed layer upon layer throughout the book. Feeney successfully uses the back and forth perspectives between the two unreliable narrators to create mega suspense. I was kept guessing through the entire story and I loved every second of it. This was an amazing work of psychological fiction and I recommend it to all.
I loved her first book, and this one did not disappoint. It was so good, and kept me guessing throughout. Great domestic thriller. The audio version was good and sometimes a bit creepy too.
4.5 Stars!
His & Hers is a fast-paced, smart, roller-coaster ride of a thriller! When a murder takes place in the small British village of Blackdown, Detective Jack Harper is put in charge of the investigation. Back in London, news reporter Anna Andrews is assigned to cover the developing story. When Jack and Anna's paths inevitably cross, questions surrounding both their relationship to each other and to the victim come to light.
As the story unfolded and myriad secrets were revealed, I was left to draw my own opinions about who was telling the truth. Every additional detail disclosed forced me to reevaluate my theory about who the killer actually was. Full of twists and turns throughout, that culminate in a bombshell ending, Alice Feeney does not disappoint!
I would highly recommend the audiobook version of this story, largely due to the compelling and unique narration. Chapters alternated between the male and female narrators for Jack and Anna, of whom both had clear and easy to follow British accents. The narration for Jack, in particular, done by Richard Armitage, was a flawless match for his character. Also, mixed sporadically throughout were chapters narrated by the killer via a voice changer used to protect his or her identity, which had the effect of lending a creepy, disturbing feeling to the narration. Both the narrators chosen and the flow of the narration were a great fit for the story and served to really amplify the suspense and thrill.
Thank you to NetGalley and Flatiron Books for my advance copy.

I am sorry for the inconvenience but I didn't have a chance to listen to this audiobook before it was archived. I will be buying a physical copy of this book and reviewing it on social media / blog. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.
I received an Advanced Audio copy of this book and OMG! This was way better then reading it and this is coming from an avid reader! The Narrator! Come one now! It kicked things off by the first sound of that voice, urgh.....had me looking all around to just make sure I was all good! YUCK factor nailed! It really added to the creepy when the voices were playing in the dark of night, as I listened, yes before bedtime, which didn’t help with the creepy. I really enjoyed this one guys. Well played Alice....well played!
This book was fantastic. There were excellent twists that felt completely organic to the story being told, and the pacing of the reveals was almost note-perfect.
Without revealing too much, essentially the story is about a reporter who has to return to her hometown when a woman is murdered and she's caught up in all of the action in a really personal way; it's interesting, it's compelling, and it doesn't require too much suspension of disbelief.
One of the reasons I requested this audiobook was because Richard Armitage is one of the narrators and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more pleasurable sound than his voice. The presence of him on this alone is reason enough to listen, but Stephanie Racine also does a fantastic job.
This is definitely worth picking up if you enjoy mystery-ish/domestic-ish thrillers that move really quickly and don't spare many words.
I received a copy of this audiobook for free from NetGalley and MacMillan Audio in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.
I was able to listen to this on audio and omgosh! It makes it 10x creepier ha ha! Another amazing book! I love every single Alice Feeney book! This didn’t disappoint at all! It kept me guessing who was the killer and then at the end I was shocked to find out who it was because I didn’t think it was who it was!! I LOVE THAT! You are in for another treat!
This was a wild and twisty, and at some points, very unbelievable tale.
This was my first Alice Feeney book and i have heard she always takes you on a wild ride but I didn’t expect this! It was messy and hard for me to believe it was true, and I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the sensitive topics and tropes that were touched on
His and Hers is a multi-perspective book that follows two main characters, Anna and Jack, as they go on the hunt for a serial killer that is targeting people they know in their home town. There are also sporadic chapters that are from the perspective of the killer to try and give some added insight into who, why and what.
Trigger warnings – rape, gang rape, drugging, murder, suicide, hanging, animal cruelty
Characters
Our main characters are ok to read about, being fairly standard thriller fodder. Although the characters themselves have no real outstanding qualities, I must commend the audiobook on this as I really appreciated how they were portrayed. The killer sections were a little jarring with the voice changer (which served little purpose and would not translate to the written word), but was still slightly creepy. All in all, our main two protagonists are fairly standard, and I feel would fall flat if not portrayed so well in audio form.
The rest of the cast vary considerably – with the only outstanding role being Anna’s mother who is a key player and I appreciated the bits around her. The rest of the cast tend to be either red herrings (and very clear red herrings at that) or truly awful people who I don’t want to read about. There are a lot a very descriptive scenes about why our victims deserve their fate – and it does turn the stomach an awful lot. Not for the faint of heart.
Plot and pacing
Fairly standard for a thriller – the ending is well done but there are far too many “false endings” (Clue would be proud!!)
Pacing was ok, it maintained a steady pace and was fairly engaging throughout – I did enjoy my time reading in terms of finding out what is going on.
The plot however, is frankly silly and requires the reader to suspend their disbelief for a huge portion of the reveal. It relies heavily on a trope that has become boring during recent thriller books – which I once again hated. I also think the final chapter was the weakest – the final reveal designed to shock mainly due to how implausible it is, along with the fact there is no real resolution – if you like your open ended stories, this is one I would recommend.
Conclusion
Fairly standard but implausible thriller that relies heavily on coincidences and predictable red herrings, this is still something that can be enjoyed despite its faults.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and unbiased review
This novel was intriguing all the way through. I was completely shocked by the ending, this novel kept me on the edge of my seat while listening. The narrators were brilliant, Alice Feeney is a wonderful writer. I would 100% recommend on reading or listening to the audiobook.
I enjoyed reading His and Hers as I have the other books by this author so I was delighted to have the opportunity to access the audio book. I will often listen whilst I go to sleep as because I know the story I can drift in and out easily. This was narrated by two authors both of whom did a good job. Definitely recommend.
This review is based on a free audiobook copy that I received from Netgalley.com
I cant say enough about this book/audiobook. If you are looking for a book that will keep you guessing every step of the way, this is the book for you. This book has multiple twists and turns.
This is a story of feeling the need to "fix" ones history, in the most ultimate way. This is the traditional tale of stories, where there are multiple sides of a story and the truth lies in the middle somewhere. The story of the "His" is based on police officer and ex-husband. The story of "Hers" is based on a news reporter returning to her childhood hometown to report on a murder. The two stories are linked together in many ways. This is a wild ride to put all of the pieces together to determine who performed the murders and why. It was a great psychological thriller.
I am new to this author, but will look for other books of hers.
The voices in the audiobook were very well done. The tone and speed of their voices were pleasing to listen to. They were able to add to the suspense of the book.
I really enjoyed this one! After not loving Fenney's Sometimes I Lie I was nervous going into this, but had heard good things from people I trust. I ended up really enjoying the story! I figured out the ending by about the 75% mark, but that's pretty good for me considering how many thrillers I read and how the norm for me is usually around the 30-50% mark. My one and only complaint is that I felt some aspects just wrapped up too conveniently. Every loose end perfectly gets tied up and in a very short amount of time. It always takes me out of the story when, specifically, thrillers do that, because it's incredibly unrealistic. Regardless, it was still a really good book and I would definitely recommend it, especially audio!
In regards to the actual narration, I loved it! The voices suited all the characters so well and I really enjoyed how creepy the audio was for the killer. Made the story so much more intense.
