Alice Feeney does not disappoint! His & Hers is a dark, atmospheric thriller. Twist galore will keep you guessing. The narration was suburb. This is sure to be a hit.
Loved this audiobook.. i figured out who the killer was about half way through but still i was interested to see why..
Believe all the hype surrounding Alice Feeney’s latest thriller! She is my go to author for a crazy twist and keeping you on your toes as a reader. This one was unique as there are three perspectives; His, Hers, and the unknown murderer. This one kept me guessing until the end and I felt like I couldn’t trust ANY of the characters! I had SO many theories about this one.
Alice Feeney presents a tantalizing psychological thriller that does not disappoint. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire audiobook, and the narrators only made it that much better. We are introduced to three main characters: Anna Andrews (a borderline alcoholic and TV presenter for BBC), DCI Jack Harper (the ex-husband of Anna), and the killer (identity unknown). Each POV has a respected narrator, but my favorite is the killer's narrator, who uses a voice changer; it's a brilliant move on the author's/publisher's part because it adds to the suspense. The story follows these characters as murders unfold in a small English village. Anna and Jack grew up in the same village where the murders take place; however, once married, they move to London. Jack only returns to live and work in the village once his marriage to Anna ends after the unfortunate death of their daughter. As the murders continue to pile up, Anna reports them, and Jack investigates. Still, neither reveals to the other that odd occurrences keep happening to them, all of which seem connected to the murders, whether directly or indirectly. Feeney weaves together a story that captivates its audience by revealing the possible motive of the serial killer through character flashbacks and by inserting the POV of the killer. It is a classic whodunit and a must-read.
Anna Andrews has almost gotten everything she wants - she lives in London and is reporting the lunchtime news. But when an old coworker returns to work and threatens her position, Anna is willing to do almost anything to get it back, which is how she ends up in Blackdown again.
DCI Jack Harper left London and is now working in Blackdown. He's the lead investigator on a murder.. of a woman he knows well, but he's decided to not tell anyone.
This story is told from Anna and Jack's perspectives. I listened to this and the audio is great - 'His' voice is amazing and does other voices so well - SO entertaining. 'Her' voice is also good, but the narrator doesn't do other voices as well as the male narrator.
I enjoyed learning about both characters while listening to their sides. Both are well developed. The only character I wish there was more background on was Priya - I felt like there were unanswered questions I had about her.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I thought I'd be able to guess the twist but no. I did not. It was surprising and well done, but I didn't think it was as mind blowing as people made it out to be.
4/5 stars.
sadly i didn't get to listen to it at all, for some reason had trouble down loading it thanks to my internet acting up
Gave me a copy a day before being archived and it's an audiobook so can't be saved so there's nothing I can do.
I've become a huge fan eAudiobooks over the last two years - mainly because I got my Audible membership and now that NetGalley has advanced eAudio for book bloggers to review, you'll be seeing a lot more reviews from me from this format.
His and Hers, how do I describe it? 'Fanfreakin' fantastic' would be accurate as would 'holy cow these narrators totally nailed it'. This was an outstanding story that blew me away from the first chapter. The narration in this book is amazing and pulls you into this web of lies, the murder of several women and is told using three POVs - the unknown killer with a delightfully bone chilling voice, Anna narrated by Stephanie Racine and DCI Jack Harper narrated by the hottest dwarf there ever was Richard Armitage (you may remember him as Thorin Oakenshield from The Hobbit movie franchise. *le swoon*).
I'll let you read the book's blurb and not rehash it here because I don't want to give away any spoilers. Just know that this is a gripping, non-stop, twisty read that had me assuming I knew the identity of the killer only to pull the rug out from me not once, but twice. Page time isn't wasted on superfluous subplots and silliness. Each page is used to build the tension, add twists, and keep the reader riveted.
I would strongly recommend listening to the eAudiobook. I wasn't a fan of Feeney's previous book Sometimes I Lie but I'm glad I gave this author another chance. Go into this book blind and you'll get one heck of a ride. You've simply gotta listen to this audiobook.
Disclaimer: My sincere thanks to MacMillan Audio for providing me a complimentary digital copy of this Audiobook via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
3.25/5. The author employs a novel (at least for me) way of narrating this thriller, alternating between the first person POVs of Anna Andrews, a BBC news reporter, and Detective Jack Harper, head of police in a small innocuous village which suddenly becomes the scene of a brutal crime. Both are highly flawed characters with a whole lot of emotional baggage, but is one of them flawed enough for murder?
The book started strongly and captured my attention with ease, but then the plot holes and frustratingly inconsistent behaviours by the various characters started to appear. There were a couple tacky scenes, written with B grade movie thriller in mind.
The male narration by the mighty Richard Armitage was marvellous as expected. The female voice was solid, although her somewhat staccato delivery was a bit grating at times.
I cannot believe how this story kept me guessing!
I had so many theories about who the murderer was, but at the end I was taken by complete surprise.
This was a really fun thriller and easy to listen to. The His & Hers perspective was a fun way to change up the typical change of POV in a thriller.
You hear from one person, then are convinced the other is a killer. Then you see the other side and end up questioning everything.
What a fun ride!
Also (spoiler alter) I kind of loved that the killer got away with everything, and actually changed her life for the better. Normally the villains are blatantly wrong and you are rooting against them, but this story had so many awful people in it. I honestly wasn't that mad that they were murdered when you found out what they did as children.
I was in shock at how it all played out, and really surprised by whose side I was on my the end of the novel.
Anna Andrews has pretty much been replaced in her job as a presenter on a prime time TV news show. When a murder occurs in the countryside, Anna plans on outshining herself to prove her validity to the BBC station. However, this murder is far too close to her. The victim happens to be one of her friends from childhood. So, Anna goes much further than a simple quick report on her murder - pushing past every and any boundary in front of her. She wants to know what happens and will leave no stone unturned until she finds out what really happened.
When DCI Jack Harper sees Anna at the scene, he reacts much as she does when she spots him. They have a hot and tumultuous past between them. What is more is that Jack also knew the victim. What is going on and why is Jack suddenly a suspect in the murder? Some actual evidence, some circumstantial. That is what makes Jack's innocence harder and harder to believe as the case is investigated. Anna isn't flawless either. She has coped with some troubled times, including the loss of her baby and her battle with alcoholism. Why she is not as reliable as could be during the course of the investigation is slowly revealed.
As this was an audiobook, with a male and female narrator, I found this book to be utterly thrilling and pretty much impossible to stop. Every time I thought I would take a break, I figured just another 15 or 30 minutes. Before I knew it, I was closing in on an incredible ending in what was most definitely a thrilling story.
One thing that made this book so captivating was the rapid change of point of view, that of Anna and that of Jack. Even the killer had his own POV, in a chilling voice that Richard Armitage did flawlessly. As a true lover of audiobooks, it can be said that a narrator can make or break a book, no matter how good the story is. The narrators chosen for this book hit spot on.
Many thanks to Macmillan Audio and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
WHAT IS THIS BOOK? IT IS THE MOST TWISTY/TURNY STORY YOU WILL READ THIS YEAR! Great narrators, a superb story that will have you on the edge of your seat, this is a winning combination and an absolutely superb book. This should be on everyones bookshelves as it is a simply brilliant read. Stand alone thriller that will knock your socks off. Amazing!
This is a deliciously devious thriller. Twisty and turny and a book to keep you guessing all the way along. This is a gritty book. Plenty of violence to be had, bodies abound, people are horrible to each other and to top it off an unreliable narrator or even more than one. I thought I had this one pegged early on, but it turned on me and messed with my mind and had me trying to figure out exactly how all the pieces fitted together all the way.
This book has really cool narration. The actors are sufficiently creepy which fits perfectly with the story. Positively creepy. Richard Armitage has the perfect voice for Jack, who is investigating the case and Stephanie Racine does a brilliant job of the nuanced role of news presenter Anna Andrews whose ambition sees her chasing murder stories, trying to take down her rivals. There is such a lot going on in this story, double crossing, lies, blind ambition and resentment for things long past. Phew!
If you like your thrillers full of mystery and intrigue and told in multiple voices and in this case voiced really really well, get hold of this book.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me access.
I was immediately sucked in by the narration. A bit spooky and unsettling. I had my suspicions up until the very end, and the reveal was completely unexpected.
His & Hers by Alice Feeney is an engrossing thriller told from two perspectives: “His” refers to chief police investigator Jack Harper and “Her” refers to Anna Andrews a news broadcaster, who used to be married to Jack. The story begins when Anna is assigned to cover a murder case that Jack is investigating in Blackdown village, a sleepy little English town in Surrey. Jack and Anna both grew up in Blackdown, and Jack recently moved back there following a tragedy in London. It turns out the victim was a friend of his and Anna’s in high school. It didn’t take long before it appeared as though a serial killer was on the loose and Jack was the primary suspect. The rest of the story was figuring out who the real killer was -- I certainly didn’t predict the ending!
Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine provided the voices in the audio version of this story and they were perfect! They had my attention the entire time and really brought the characters to life. There was also a third voice that crept into the story providing the reader with a glimpse into the sociopaths mind. Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing a copy of this audiobook. I leave this review freely and in my own words.
I really got into this audible book! I couldn’t wait until I was able to listen again as I just needed to find out what was happening. Characters were great and the twists and red herrings in the story were excellent. Loved it!
I have enjoyed listening to Alice Feeney’s previous books so was delighted to have this one to listen to in the new NetGalley Shelf app.
The book is a twisty psychological thriller, with some quite dark sections, and an ending I really didn’t see coming. It was worlds apart from every guess I had while listening. The plot was well crafted in typical Feeney fashion and keep me hooked until the end.
I enjoyed the narration too - one of the narrators in particular gave an eerie quality or the book. Would recommend it if you are a fan of this genre.
Thanks to MacMillan Audio, NetGalley and the author for an advance audio copy of this book.
Unfortunately, I can't recommend this title. The format is contrived, and although there are some surprising twists and turns, I found the final "reveal" to be totally unbelievable. The employment of present tense throughout was annoying. The narrators were fine.
Bestselling author Alice Feeney delivers a taut and enthralling suspense with HIS & HERS—her latest about a newsreader and a detective who investigate a brutal murder in the British village where they both grew up.
We first meet BBC news presenter Anna Andrews—perfectly polished on the outside but falling apart under the weight of a recent tragedy. Anna returns to Blackdown, the small town she once fled to forget her painful past, and now the scene of a murder she must cover.
Anna crosses paths with Detective Jack Harper, who fears he’ll become the primary murder suspect should anyone discover his connection with the victim.
Anna and Jack soon realize something far more sinister, calculated and personal is afoot—someone is dredging up long-buried secrets and one of them may be next to die.
Through his and hers alternating chapters, we gradually learn more about Anna and Jack—their past, their ugly secrets and flawed intentions. We also have an unnamed third narrator whose chilling first-hand account amps the desire to figure it all out. But ever the queen of misdirection, Feeney pens a narrative that makes you think you have it all figured it out only to have the rug pulled from under you, time and time again. I couldn’t stop reading.
Dark, tense, unsettling and punctuated by shocking twists, Feeney once again delivers the thriller everyone will be talking about this summer.
This book belongs on EVERY thriller lovers shelf. It was so so SO good. I was absolutely enthralled with the way the author wrote it. I loved her style and how descriptive every thing was. And I couldn’t figure this out to save my life. I think I changed the murderer identity in my head like 6 times and was still wrong at the end & left bewildered. So creepy, awful, intriguing, frustrating and addicting. PICK THIS UP ASAP all you murder mystery lovers.
