If this were a single line review it’d say “You need to read this if you love thrillers”.
But here goes the 5⭐️ review!
“There are always two sides to a story- Yours & Mine, Ours & Theirs, His & Hers”
The story alters between His, Jack and Hers, Anna and a third creepy voice, the murderer. I “read” this as an audiobook and listening through this was like being inside the heads of these three characters. It was thrilling, worrisome and cold!! If someone has figured how to turn a simple murder mystery into a most excited story, its Alice Feeney. I had mixed thoughts about her previous works, but this one is a winner.
Sorry I’m rambling, but its been a week since I finished this one and its still with me!! I never expected/suspected the character behind the third voice.. it caught me by surprise. But again, it’s something one has to do to protect a loved one!
Jack & Anna are like two lost birds, even they know they belong together, but they are not. Because after going through a hard time, its tough to be around each other, its reminds the painful times. That third voice.. Uh, believe me, you’ll guess till last, and when you think you’ve found the killer, you’ll be astonished, because its not who you think it is!
Audio book was good, had no issues with the sound/quality. The narrators were exceptional!!
Thank you Netgalley, Macmillan audio for the AAC. This review is my own and is not influenced in any way.
I really liked the narrators and the story. The audio book was interesting because the killer had a mechanic distinct voice. It was a fast paced book. Hope you enjoy this book as much as i did.
This well deserves the description “cat and mouse game”. There are so many who could be the murderer. Anna Andrews gets caught up in reporting the murders of former girls with whom she went to grammar school in a small English town. Her ex-husband, Jack, is the Detective Chief Inspector in charge of the investigation. Both could be the murderer. It’s a page turner and leaves the reader in disbelief when the actual murderer is discovered. Alternating chapters between Hers (Anna) and His (Jack), the tension crackles even more in the excellent narration of the audio version. In fact, I’d say this is one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to. It’s a creepy story and the listener won’t be prepared for the ending.
Blackdown is a quiet little village outside of London that suddenly finds itself thrust into the national spotlight when a body is found under some rather mysterious circumstances. Anna Andrews, a correspondent for BBC--formerly the anchor--is sent to cover the story in Blackdown, which happens to be the village she grew up in. She soon finds herself doing more than simply covering the story, however; it turns out she knows the victim, drawing her into the story and the case. In charge of the case is DCI Jack Harper, head of the major crime team, who also happens to know the victim. Jack opts not to tell anyone, until he begins to look like a suspect himself. Someone knows more than they will admit to; there is his side, and her side.
His & Hers is a face-paced mystery that I had a hard time putting down. The action is told from his side and her side, along with a third, mysterious narrator. Aside from giving the reader the two sides to the story, the back and forth created a lot of suspense in the story, and, needing to know what would happen, I was often unable to put it down. It also has various flashback moments that add depth to the characters and the mystery. Feeney throws mystery and action at the reader right at the beginning, and continues to do so all the way through to the end. The plot is deliciously twisted, as are many of the characters, but there are some parts that some people might have a hard time with. The characters are well developed and the reader really gets a good look into the thoughts and motivations of Anna and Jack.
I read and partially listened to His & Hers. I really liked the narration done by the mysterious, third narrator; I liked that it was done with a voice-modifier, making it more difficult to figure out who it is. The “Him” narrator honestly bugged me. I did not like the way women’s dialogue sounded when he spoke for a female. If I only had the audiobook I would have listened to the whole thing, because the story is so strong and entertaining, but since I had the ebook as well I, after awhile, listened to the third narrator when their parts came, and read the rest.
Thank you to Flatiron Books for an ebook and NetGalley for an audiobook of His & Hers, given in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Twist upon twist make this a suspenseful and engaging book. Every time I thought I had it figured, something would happen and I'd learn that I was wrong. Moves a bit slow in places, but well worth the time.
When Anna loses her temporary position as news "presenter," she is sent to her old home town to report on a murder. Once there, memories catch up with her. The crime itself reconnects her with her police officer ex-husband Jack and they find themselves caught up in a series of murders apparently linked to their teen years. Dual viewpoints reveal both their personal histories and current lives, as the story drills into the people and events that connect them. Skillfully performed in alternating chapters by Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine, as Jack and Anna talk to the listener, but there are insertions with the disguised voice of the mysterious killer who is equally slow in his/her revelations. The book seems written specifically for audio performance and is absolutely gripping up until the end, where twists and turns get very ambiguous, and the story seems to loose its grip on authenticity. Still, it's a very fine listen and is sure to appeal to a wide audience of listeners who enjoy psychological fiction.
HIS & HERS was my first audiobook from NetGalley. I am very excited about audiobooks being made available to us. It is my preferred way to read so I was extra pleased to love this book so much. I cannot stop raving about it. It was a mystery/thriller with no holes, no twists that lack believability and no clichéd characters. I haven’t read one this well written since Gillian Flynn’s books. And if that wasn’t enough, Richard Armitage narrated the book! Win-win. I will continue to talk this book up all summer. It’s the perfect beach read (even if you can’t go to the beach this year).
Thank you to NetGalley for the audio ARC.
I'm not a huge fan of unreliable narrator trope but I found this story entertaining and engrossing.
The plot kept me hooked and the voices of the narrator gave life to the story making it very engaging.
I recommend this audiobook as I think that the voices made it more compelling.
Many thanks the publisher and Netgalley, all opinions are mine.
What a great listen! It's told in three different voices. His, Her's and the killer. The killer's voice is distorted though, so you can't tell who it is. I listen to audiobooks all the time and love when they have a unique spin like this. I was sure I knew who the killer was many times throughout the book, but Alice Feeney had many tricks up her sleeve. I honestly just sat there at the end of the book for a few seconds, stunned by the reveal.
Great for fans of unreliable narrators! This story is told from the perspectives of a reporter, an detective, and the murderer. However, as you read, it is unclear if the murderer is truly a third character at all. Everyone in this story has a motive, and the author kept me guessing the whole time. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I quickly began to doubt myself again.
If you are thinking about reading it, I highly recommend the audio version. The narrators are amazing and the murderer's sections are especially creepy.
Wow, I could not put this thriller down. Alice Feeney didn’t disappoint in her latest book. Alternating point of view the leader is left wondering until the very end. Highly recommend. Thank you so much to Net Galley for my advanced copy.
His and Hers is the sort of fast-paced gripping thriller that's perfect for summer. I'd call it a great vacation read except that so many of are not going anywhere during this corona summer. Let's call it a great staycation read.
When a woman is murdered, the detective investigating the crime and the TV anchor reporting on the crime find they're both connected to the victim and to each other. They both have secrets and we're never quite sure whether one of them might be the killer.
There's a certain amount of suspension of disbelief that you will need going into this book. Yes, it's a bit much to have the victim, the detective, and the reporter all connected to each other, but once you accept that, the story really takes off and it's hard to put the book down. I'm saying very little about the plot because I think it's better to go in not knowing much. I will say that the plot is twisty and dark, and the mystery is really well done.
I listened to the audiobook, and it's really well done. The narration alternates between Jack (the detective, read by Richard Armitage) and Anna (the reporter, read by Stephanie Racine). Armitage is a great audiobook narrator, and he does a fine job as always. Racine is new to me, and her narration is really well done. There are interludes from the point of view of the killer that are read through a voice distorter, which is very effective and creepy in the audiobook. (I'm sure it's still effective in the book, but perhaps not quite as chilling.)
This is my first ever audiobook and I really enjoyed the story and the narrators. I'd also like to read the book as I'm sure I missed some nuances of the story while listening however that was me being an audiobook novice. Story-wise this book was really strong and I enjoyed it.
I had seen a lot of people say this book was amazing so I was excited to see the audiobook available on Netgalley.
Personally, I enjoyed this book a lot more than "Sometimes I Lied." This one kept me guessing. I thought I had the story figured out but then another twist was thrown in.
I'm very picky when it comes to narrators but the ones for this audiobook did fantastic.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for a copy in exchange for a review.
'His & Hers' alternates between two very different--but ultimately connected--narrators. There is Anna Andrews, a successful BBC presenter whose job has recently been threatened. DCI Jack Harper is the detective investigating the murder of a young woman in the quiet village of Blackdown, where Anna grew up. Anna is assigned to cover the murder, but it soon becomes clear that she knows more about the victim than she is letting on.
As the story progresses, we learn that both Anna and Jack are hiding things. Either could be a suspect in the murder, and as the body count starts to pile up, the more they both look suspicious.
This book has so many twists and turns! I changed my mind about the suspect many times throughout the book, but I was still wrong in the end. This is a fast-paced, engaging thriller.
Both narrators of the audiobook are excellent. The chapters are short, leaving you wanting to listen to just a bit more to find out what happens next. Recommended to lovers of mysteries and thrillers.
Narrators are so real! Great book, full of surprises, actions, twists and turns. And what an ending?! I definately want to read more of Alice Feeney books.
*I received a copy of this audiobook from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for a fair review.
Thanks @macmillanaudio for the advanced copy of His and Hers, a fast paced thriller. I loved the flashbacks to Anna’s16th birthday and the backstory of her “friends” and that life changing night. Flash forward to today when all the friends start dying, one by one and that leaves the reader to determine who is doing the killing. Trust me, you will be surprised in the end! Pick it up. It will not disappoint
This is a deliciously creepy book! I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the different narrators in addition to the plot line. I love audio books but they are not all equal. The narrators can make or break the story. This one is a real winner. I wasn’t sure whether to root for him or her. And I kept changing my mind. Definitely the sign of a good book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC. I really enjoyed it.
Over 48 hours have passed since finishing His & Hers by Alice Feeney, and I am still processing this book. His & Hers is the darkest phycological thriller I can ever remember reading. It reminded me a lot of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None mixed with 101 Dalmatians.
What I loved about this story and would easily give it a 5 out of 5 stars for, is that you were constantly rethinking who the murderer was. I did have it narrowed down to two people, and the one I suspected more was it, but I could not find a reason to nail the murdered for what they had done. For that reason, I kept second guessing myself. The way Feeney also writes, at the end of every chapter you are left thinking that you were wrong, that this person did it. That continued for a few hours. So, for really making me sit, think, and second guess myself constantly, His & Hers was an incredible read.
Who is telling the truth; Him, Her, or the Killer? The story is told from the points of view of all three of those characters. Each actor had a clear distinct voice, so the listener easily knew who and what was going on. The Killer’s voice did take some time for me to get used to as it was distorted. A very cool effect for the audiobook, but at first, I did struggle to get used to and understand it.
What I wrestled with were the vulgar and disturbing actions that some of the characters did. Some of them were so graphic I had to skim or skip over them. It takes a lot to trigger me when it comes to violence.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the narration and twists in this story, the intensity of some of the violence really put a damper on the overall read for me. For this, I am giving it 4 stars. There are several trigger warnings in this book. I highly recommend reading several reviews to make the best decision for yourself.
I received an advanced audiobook copy from Macmillian Audio through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.
This audiobook was AMAZING! The different voice actors really made a difference when listening and being able to keep focus. This dark thriller was a trip to read, every time I thought I had it all figured out it would send some out of the left field with a huge twist. All the way till the very end it kept you guessing. Once you find out who the killer is... it will leave you shocked!
