This was my first audiobook and I loved it. Listening and walking on country roads made for a perfect backdrop. The differing characters narrating the story was quite enjoyable. I was completely taken back by the ending - a twist I never saw coming. His & Hers was a fantastic thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Alice Feeney does it again. Anna Andrews has lost everything except her job. Jack Harper has gone through a divorce and is living where he grew up. The link between them? A murdered woman named Rachel.
Based on the premise that there are two sides to a story, His and Hers alternates between the POV of Anna and Jack. It's got a creepy atmosphere, lots of twists, and I did NOT guess the ending. Alice Feeney is the queen of the unreliable narrator and this is no exception. It was a great ride.
My second audio book was much easier to escape into, the narrators did a wonderful job.
I think going in to this one without knowing much about it is best, so I'll keep my synopsis brief.
The story is told in alternating voices between hers, Anna Andrews and his, DCI Jack Harper. There is also a third, sinister voice whose identity is kept secret, that we hear from now and then.
Anna is a news presenter with the BBC. She grudgingly heads to to the small community of Blackdown, where she was raised, to cover a murder. She finds out the victim was a childhood friend.
DCI Jack Harper heads up the investigation into the young woman's murder. He's not sharing the fact that he knew her.
Their accounts flow smoothly back and forth, as the suspense level climbs. It was hard to stop listening, it really captured my imagination.
This was dark and twisted, I never guessed what would happen next. A terrifyingly fun thriller!
Thank you MacMillan Audio for the audio book via NetGalley.
Wow. I absolutely loved the suspense of "His & Hers," the latest roller coaster ride from the UK author, Alice Feeney.
This book, full of twists and turns, is a great reminder that I should definitely read more mysteries. For the thrill of it. Lol. Feeney kept me guessing until the very end, and I finished it within 24 hours. It's really a book you don't want to put down. Or, in my case, it was an audiobook that I didn't want to turn off. In fact, I wanted to increase the narration speed so I could get to the end more quickly to find out what happened!
Macmillan Audio hired wonderful actors-turned-narrators, Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racinedid, to tell the story of Anna Andrews and Jack Harper. They did a wonderful job of keeping me on my toes. And as an American, I always love to hear British accents and terms. Since I read the American version of the novel while listening to the international audio version, I was amazed at how much the book was adapted. (Ex: Snakes and ladders vs. chutes and ladders, nappy vs. diaper, etc.) That made for a fun surprise.
The author, Feeney, spent 15 years working for the BBC, so it's fitting that her female protagonist, Anna Andrews, is a news anchor for the BBC. Over the course of a few days in her life, we are immersed into her world of reporting on serial murders in a small community outside of London. The twist is that she's linked to everyone who was killed. And, at any given point, it seems like any of the characters could be guilty of the crimes.
What's unique about His & Hers is that every other chapter alternates between two points of view... that of Anna, and the detective assigned to the case, Jack Harper. Interestingly, Jack and Anna have a history, too.
I'm very grateful for the opportunity to listen to the e-audio version of this book, courtesy of Macmillan Audio. and Netgalley.
Side note: Richard Armitage is the star of Netflix hit,“The Stranger,” and Stephanie Racine has narrated two other Feeney novels.
What a dark, twisty, crazy ride!
After a personal tragedy, Anna is hitting the bottle hard. She hides her drinking well, but when she loses her temporary BBC presenting job (she was replacing a colleague on maternity leave) and goes back to being a correspondent, she spirals a little.
Fortunately, there’s a murder she can report on, a murder of someone she actually knew. And that Jack, her ex-husband, also knew … intimately. He’s the police investigator assigned to the case.
Then one murder turns into more and Anna and Jack are trapped by their lies, trapped in this village surrounded by creepy woods, and trapped in their sad memories of their broken marriage.
The story is narrated by Anna, Jack, and the murderer, who in the audiobook uses a voice changer. This makes the audiobook a really good choice – the two readers did a great job of making this story come to life.
His & Hers is a seriously twisty book that REALLY keeps you guessing. There were SO many suspects. Anna’s drinking makes her unreliable in a way that kept things feeling just a little off-balance. Just when you think you’ve decided what’s happening, there’s another twist or revelation making you question what you thought before.
Definitely recommend this if you don’t mind a pretty dark book (this was almost too dark for me in parts) and love a lot of twists.
There is no driving force to the end. There’s a lot of obvious set up, so obvious it becomes boring and slow because you know it means nothing. The characters were unlike able. A lot of dialogue was very cringe. I felt icky inside my own head having read such a corny assemble of words. Too many ideas made the story drag. I was felt feeling where are we going with this? Not in a good way. The relationship didn’t feel earned. I could care less. It was not needed. The ending was a joke, a joke that made no sense really and not even really fair. So much about the killer and the motive had me laughing and upset I sat through this to the end. The ending was too long and laughable.
Big thanks to @netgalley and the publisher @flatiron_books for the audiobook to review!
I took a break from reading thrillers this year, because I was starting to feel that they were all too similar and thus predictable. However, I was so impressed by this twisty-turny story and I couldn't put it down. There were times when I thought that I had it all figured out, only to be confused again a few chapters later.
Since this was an audiobook ARC, I also want to mention the fabulous performance from both narrators. I hope that NetGalley improves their audiobook app soon, because I'd love to review more audiobooks but I'm a little turned off by the glitchiness.
WOW WOW WOW! The audiobook of His & Hers by Alice Feeney was absolutely amazing! I am so glad that I was able to listen to it, versus reading it. The third person narration was incredible and added to the story in a way that I would not have gotten had I read the book myself. Multiple times throughout this book, I felt as though I had figured out who the third person was but each time I was proven wrong I could not wait to see what direction the story went. The twist at the end was incredible! Feeney is brilliant! I gave this book 5/5 stars and cannot wait to add the physical book to my collection. I cannot wait to begin to read Feeney's backlist. A huge thank you to Netgalley, Libro.FM, Macmillan Audio, and Alice Feeney for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. Please listen to this book - you will NOT be disappointed!
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Holy crap guys! His & Hers was freaking amazing! Honestly, from the time I saw the title and read the synopsis I was hooked. There was no ifs, ands, or buts for me when I dove into this. I was here for the wild ride that everyone else has been enjoying and I was giddy with all kinds of excitement.
Bring on the mystery.
It all starts with a group of women brutally murdered and they just happen to be from the same high school graduating class. Coincidence? Maybe. Either way, I was down for the count and had my detective cap secured to my head. It also doesn't help that Jack was with one of the victims, sexually, before she died. Yikes. Sounds like Alex Cross or something.
Then there's Anna who honestly isn't doing too hot. She is definitely suffering due to an untimely death in the family, losing her job, and being the friend of the victims. It's safe to say that her and Jack are good suspects for this book.
To say that I loved this book would be an understatement. I'm so happy that I got a chance to read this and listen to the audio because it was absolutely amazing. Definitely had me on the edge of my seat because of everything that was happening. I'm, of course, a horrible detective and should definitely stick to my day job.. because I didn't see anything coming.
I can't wait for my next book by this author!
There are at least two sides to every story: Yours and mine. Ours and theirs. His and hers. Which means someone is always lying.
We are a species capable of horrific acts, and incapable of learning from the lessons our own history tries to teach us.
The truth is that life broke us, and when we finally acknowledge that we didn’t know how to fix each other, we stopped trying.
You are more than the worst thing you’ve ever done.
There are at least two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers....
This is hands down my favorite book by Alice Feeney. It pulled me in from the very first and didn’t disappoint anywhere throughout. It was told with such passion and beauty even though it’s a dark thriller that will keep you on edge and wondering who did it. I thought I had it all figured out but was in for a huge shock. Every guess I made was so wrong and that hardly ever happens. This book is great. Best of this series. Hands down the best book by this author.
This book is about a lot of things, mainly murder. The murder of someone that Anna, who is a reporter, went to school with. Who at one time was her best friend. Anna was raised by her mother who did everything she could for her after Anna’s dad left them. She worked hard to make things better for Anna. Anna didn’t always appreciate the things her mum did for her though. She just didn’t understand. Not until she became a mum herself. Even then she didn’t go see her mum like she should have. She had a busy life as a reporter and didn’t want to return to Blackdown for anyone. It held bad memories for Anna.
Jack, Anna’s ex husband, was the DCI on the case of Rachel, who was murdered. He lives with demons of his own and is surprised when Anna is the one covering the story of the woman killed in the woods. Things are not great for Jack. He’s living with his sister and her little girl and it’s not the best relationship. But he does the best he can. He’s never truly got over his love for Anna. He’s helped her mother who is suffering from dementia and tries to tell Anna how bad things are. Jack is a good man and you will root for him throughout this story. Almost always.
This book is told from three different people. Anna, Jack and the murder. You will have many guesses but my guess is you will know figure it out. This is really a very twisted story that takes you places you won’t soon forget. The trip through the woods. It’s so realistic you will feel as if you are there. In the depths of the underbrush. The darkness that is common in thick groves of trees. The many twists and turns. From the young girls to the older women who know these woods well.
I really did like almost all the characters in this book. Some more than others. I felt for some very deeply. My heart went out to them. Some I honestly wanted to smack hard. I didn’t like a few of them at all. Overall though you will root for most to make it. There are some twist that you probably won’t see coming.
I received an audio of this book and though I did love the voices on it, I had bought a paperback copy and read it from there. I’m not good at listening to books. I would much rather read it for myself. It was narrated excellently though for anyone that loves audio. You won’t be disappointed.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #AliceFeeney, #Flatironbooks for the audio of this story. This is my own review.
I had to give this a 5/5 stars and the highest recommendation. Grab it, read it, live it... if you dare.
Alice Feeney is my new favorite author! His & Hers by Alice Feeney is my 3rd book by Feeney and it was AMAZING! All of Feeney's books that I have read so far have been spectacular and this latest work did not disappoint. Deliciously dark and tantalizingly twisty the audiobook was cinematic! Told from multiple points of view with complex characterizations and well-developed plot points, His & Hers will blow your hair back! The suspense build-up and pacing were magic, and the writing was deliberately sequenced for maximum effect.
AMAZING! AMAZING! AMAZING!
I received an advanced review copy of this audiobook from the publisher, via NetGalley, for my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you to Netgalley and MacMillian Audio for the free ALC
When I first started His & Hers, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. I thought it was going to be the typical ‘lady with an alcohol problem that is subsequently an unreliable narrator’, but then I read on..
★ what I liked: it was a very compulsive read. Once I realized it was more than what I originally thought, I wanted to know what was going to happen and couldn’t stop listening.
☆ what I didn’t like: there was so much going on. I love twisty thrillers, but I also like them to be focused.
★ audiobook: I love audiobooks with multiple narrators, and His & Hers came through! I thought it was very well done. I did noticed that when listening on 2x speed, the ‘her’ portion had an echo that made listening a bit distracting (I am not sure if this is due to the fact that it’s an early copy).
Do I recommend? Yes. I recommend this to people who love twisty, and the twisted. A thriller that will bounce you all over the place. You won’t be bored!
Publication date: July 28
I'll be honest, I was skeptical of first. I have a long history of negative feelings about thrillers centering around white women in England who have alcohol issues. It's a reoccurring character that haunts me, so I immediately had it in my head I wasn't going to enjoy His & Hers. I was thankfully very wrong. This book really kept me hooked and I read the entire book in almost one sitting because I just simply couldn't put it down. The plot moved well, and the pacing was great in my opinion. So many clues and so many red herrings, it was not an easily solvable thriller for me and that came as such a welcome change. His & Hers kept me guessing until the end, I didn't fully solve the mystery until it was revealed and that was really so fun to read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy to review!
Anna Andrews is on top of the world as a BBC TV presenter. But, the woman she has been sitting in for returns after two years and Anna is unexpectedly demoted to field correspondent. Her first assignment is to cover a murder which happened in the London countryside where nothing like this ever happens. Enter DCI Jack Harper as the lead on the murder investigation. The only catch is, Jack was just with the victim, but he is not the only one.
I can’t say too much else except you MUST read this book. The author takes this story in an insane direction. As different characters emerge, I kept thinking, okay this person could be the murderer, or wait, that person is the murderer. This book really kept me guessing. I cannot tell you how twisty, well-written and all-engrossing this book is. I could not put it down!!

A darkly addictive puzzle that kept me up long into the night. I was impressed with how intelligently orchestrated the plot was and the pace at which information was delivered. Being able to feel like a participant in the story as my determination to uncover all the secrets kept me from putting this one down. The characters were well formed through the alternating narratives of His & Hers as well as the third narrative that I found to be chilling and grounding for the story at the same time. While I never felt the story lull I did get worried midway through that we were on a rather predictable path, I am happy to report that path quickly added elements to the story to cause me to question whether I had truly developed an accurate depiction of the events in play. I found the end to be satisfying and slightly disturbing but found myself enjoying this one more than I had expected to. The only hiccup I had was the few times I questioned how competent Jack was as an investigator, some things I just couldn’t see how he missed being as intimately connected to so many of the key characters. There were so many elements to this story that it really didn’t take away from the thrill of trying to predict what the ending would be and I can see this one being a favorite of those drawn to this genre or those loving crime tv.
4.5 stars
This was such a well-written book by Alice Feeney and also my first by the author! I'll be sure to look out for more published works by her! There's a side to every story. This is a POV from Anna Andrews and her ex Jack Harper. There also happens to be a third POV from our mysterious killer whose distorted voice nailed the creep factor. The characters and storyline were so riveting from the jump and kept me engaged all the way through to that surprise ending. Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine did a wonderful job narrating the audiobook with just the right tone and inflection to bring their respective characters to life for me. Plenty of shocking reveals and a twisted ending I didn't expect. The only reason I couldn't give this one 5 stars is because of who the killer ended up being. It was hard to grasp how this person could manage to be behind the machinations without getting caught. I've found books with unreliable main characters, especially those with drinking problems, to be really frustrating but Anna Andrews didn't bother me at all. Quite the opposite, I quite enjoyed hearing her side of the story. What an incredible listen!
His & Hers is a dark, twisty read that truly kept me guessing. In fact, I didn’t figure out what had actually happened and was surprised by the turns the story took!
This would be a great choice for fans of thrillers who enjoy trying to piece together different revelations that happen in a story. The subject and situations in the book were a bit darker than I usually read, but I kept with the story because I didn’t have it figured out on my own who did it & had to find out!
The book is told via alternating chapters...”his” & “hers.” The toggling back and forth is part of the piecing together of the puzzle, told from varying viewpoints.
I struggled a bit with this review. At first listen, I did NOT think that I was actually going to enjoy this book! However, as I got through it, I started to like it more and more, and BAM then the ending happened, and that solidified it for me!!
His & Hers is co-narrated by Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine and I felt like they fit the characters they portrayed perfectly! I enjoyed listening to the story through their perspective!
I felt like the story started out slow and really didn't catch my interest from the beginning. But I do feel like it had an excellent climatic rise as the story went out, which I now appreciate! And HOLY COW...that ending threw me for a loop! WOWZERS! You can't beat an ending like that...one that I absolutely DID NOT SEE COMING!
Overall, this was an excellent read! I would like to give a HUGE shoutout to Netgalley, Alice Feeney, and Macmillan Audio for providing me with a free copy of His & Hers in return for an honest and unbiased review.
4.5
Anna Andrews finally has the job she's been working toward for years: presenter for the BBC's lunchtime news. So when her dream job is threatened, she'll do anything in order to keep it. Including covering the discovery of a dead body in the small village of Blackdown. Anna grew up in Blackdown and left without a backwards glance years before, she'd rather do anything that return again, but when it's discovered the dead woman has a link to Anna's past, she can't leave.
When DCI Jack Harper left London, Blackdown wasn't on his list of places he'd end up working. When the body is discovered, Jack doesn't immediately tell anyone that he knows the woman. But when he starts to find incongruities in his investigation, it's apparent he is suspect.
<b>There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means someone is always lying.</b>
This book is seriously made for an audiobook listen. Really, I don't know if you can get the full chilling feeling by only reading. Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine are perfect in their roles as the titular His & Hers (aka Jack and Anna). The addition of another distorted voice adds such ambiance to the story. I had chills the moment I pushed play. Eerie. Well done by everyone who had a hand in this audiobook as it's a stand out from others listen for me. I thought the narrators did a great job of distinguishing between the voices of each character and really committing to the roles.
Now the story itself. This is the first book by Alice Feeney I've read (or listened to). I was initially drawn to the book in large part because I've seen so much press for it since it's publication earlier in the week. When I read the synopsis, I was intrigued by the idea of these two people getting pulled into a murder investigation and both of them are not being exactly truthful.
Alice Feeney really knows how to craft a spiraling story. How all these layers keep being added onto what we already know - or what we think we already know - that shape our new perception. You start the story believing one thing, but with one word or sentence your beliefs are just thrown right out the window, and you start the questions all over again. It's at times a tough book to listen to as I think many stories are that revolve around death, and long-held secrets. But I think that Alice Feeney really excels at keeping the readers (listeners) engaged by parsing out the information we receive. And by the time that trick starts to feel old or too repetitive, we're at the end of the book.
Overall, as I said, at times a difficult book to get through, but paced and plotted out so superbly well. I'm definitely interested in checking out Alice Feeney's other books, but maybe after I read something a little more bright.
When a murder is discovered in Blackdown, BBC reporter Anna Andrews goes to cover the story, but she soon learns that she knows the victim. When DCI Jack Harper arrives on the scene to do his job and he too realizes he knows the victim, but thinks it’s best to keep this tidbit to himself. However, in just a matter of days a series of murders in the little town of Blackdown may all be linking to a serial killer.
Told through three different voice narrations: his, hers, and the murderer, which kept the novel flowing and the listener engaged. This creepy thriller was gripping, suspenseful, and at times grotesque, but it kept me entertained and guessing the entire time. I loved the English accents of the two main characters, HIM-Jack Harper and HER-Anna Andrews. While the third voice of the murderer was eerie and definitely disturbing, the fact that it was distorted added to the dark atmosphere of the novel and made it difficult to identify who the killer really was.
This worked very well in the audio format and the reader has the sense that neither of the narrators are not that reliable. I kept waiting for the reveal and was not expecting the twist at the end. The characters were perfectly portrayed and matched their voices expertly.
Trigger warnings: physical & sexual abuse, animal cruelty, gang rape, bullying, and murder just to name a few
