Thoroughly interesting

I love mysteries. This is a rich and complex story with multiple possible villains and not-saints.

Near the end of this book I had a couple of different ideas which way the story would go but I didn’t know and it made it infinitely interesting. This is a story that I have backed up to the beginning of a chapter because I wanted to hear it again – just because it was that interesting, and not the usual reason that I was not paying close enough attention.

There are three voices in the book, though the third is unknown, keeping the whole mystery of His and Hers interesting. A lot of nominees get some consideration as the third voice until they die horribly. I found that as I got closer and closer to the end, I was both pulled in different directions. I wanted to know where we were going and didn’t want to end.

TW: sexual assault, eating disorders, mild animal mutilation

This story was a little slow to start, but once it got going it was incredibly interesting. At each turn I thought I figured it out- and would get more detail that would make me question myself! When the story was peaking at the end, I really thought I had it figured out...and then there was the final twist.

And it was so absurd that I took away two stars.

The story this book leads you to believe is realistic, and makes the most sense. The final twist removed any of the sensible motives. I genuinely hated the twist.

The writing is very well done, and the different perspectives was interesting. Hearing how “Him” and “Her” perceived one another, and how the killer saw them all, really brought this story to life. The way the audiobook had the distorted audio for the killer was superb. Genuinely, other than the twist at the end, this book was very good.

Best audio book I may have ever listened to! The narration of the two main characters was amazing, as was the secret 3rd unknown. Crazy good story but the narrators brought it to life!! Loved it!!

This is a story about secrets

I enjoyed this twisty, turny thriller. I felt certain I knew who the killer was, but I was totally wrong (which I loved). I would highly recommend audiobooking this, as the narration is FANTASTIC.

This audiobook gripped me from the very beginning, and both narrators did a wonderful job (plus that creepy voice, holy crap!). The story follows a divorced couple; Anna is a BBC reporter and Jack is a detective. Both of them become involved on both professional and personal levels with the recent murder of a woman, and the intrigue takes off from there. The narration jumps between Anna and Jack's perspectives, as well as there being a third perspective from the murderer. My theories about where this was going and who was behind it all changed constantly, and I was both shocked and surprisingly pleased with the reveal at the end. This definitely made the list as one of my favorite thrillers!

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing an ARC copy of this audiobook!

His & Hers is a brilliant psychological thriller that will have you guessing left, right and in between in trying to figure out who the killer is. I was sure so many times that I knew who was guilty only to doubt myself, and then doubt myself again. I'm leaving the plot vague because like with so many thrillers, the less you know the better.

What I can tell you is that the book goes back and forth between BBC reporter Anna Andrews and Detective Jack Harper. There's also a third narrator that I'll let you discover for yourself. The narrators do a fantastic job of bringing their characters to life.

I highly recommend this one to those who love thrillers. As far as murder mysteries this is a fairly graphic one so if you are at all squeamish this might be one to avoid.

Trigger warnings for topics related to school hazing/bullying as well as sexual and animal abuse.

I received a digital copy of this audiobook from Netgalley in return for my honest review.

I didn’t know anything about this book going in (I didn’t even read the description) only saw that it said mystery/thriller. I think it’s best to go into this without knowing much of anything. The story is told from three perspectives “his”, “hers” and a third narrator. I thought the way it was produced for audio was really interesting with the third narrator speaking through a voice altering device, something I’ve never encountered in an audiobook. This novel kept my guessing and changing my mind about who the killer was, which is exactly what I want in a murder mystery.

TW: Rape & animal abuse

4 stars

This was my first Alice Feeney book and honestly, I wasn’t disappointed. The audiobook was fantastic, the narrators were PERFECT. And to top it all off, the murder POV was the creepiest thing I have ever listened to. It added so much suspense to the book!

With rotating chapters, you immediately get tossed into a murder investigation. The entire time I was trying to figure out who did it and why. I didn’t expect the twists that came out of this one. There were a few bits (see TW) that I felt were far too detailed/unnecessary. Other than that, the book was very fast-paced and I found myself finishing it very quickly.

If you don’t mind the TW, then definitely pick up this book. With multiple POVs, a thrilling story, and a few shocking twists, His & Hers will have you devouring this book.

Special thanks to Netgalley/Macmillan Audio!

Anna Andrews is experiencing the worst day of her life. She's been demoted from her dream job as a news reader for the BBC and been assigned to a murder case in her hometown, a place she's tried to run away from and forget. As she begins her investigative reporting, she's surprised to find one of her childhood friends is the victim. With her friend's death, the secrets Anna has tried to bury and forget are in jeopardy of resurfacing.

Jack Harper needs a change in his luck. He's been living the same routine for the past couple of years, after the death of his daughter, his divorce and leaving his job as a police officer in London. He's replaced them with a new child, new woman and new job as DCI in his hometown of Blackdown, but he needs something to break up the monotony. He's called to investigate the murder of a woman he knows very intimately, a fact he keeps to himself. Soon his whole life begins to unravel.

This thriller is well paced, alternating between His, Her and the Killers POVs. I really enjoyed listening to the book, finishing it as quickly as I could, without little ears in the room. It's action packed and will keep you guessing on who are the good ones and who are the bad ones. Many chapters leave you with the right amount of suspense, making you listen for just a few more minutes. I thought Armitage and Racine did an excellent job bringing the characters to life. I thought having them both read as the Killer POV made it even more exciting in the whodunit mystery. Warning, there are triggers for bullying, rape and animal abuse, mixed with typical murder gore, all of which pick up pace towards the middle to end of the book.

Terrific read and highly recommend. Just when you think you have it figured out......another twist. Full of twists and dark. The narrators voices are pleasant. One of my favorite thrillers. Thank you to NetGalley for sending me an early audiobook.

A special thank you to NetGalley and Flatiron books for giving me a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I loved listening to this book. The voices drew me in immediately. The point of you switched between Jack and Anna- two very complex characters who are wrapped up in a dark, twisted killing spree. The third point of view is the killer- I loved that it seemed like the person was using a machine to completely disguise their voice! I wanted to listen to this story non stop. The chapters ended in cliff hangers and always had my mind racing on trying to figure out who the killer is..... this is a 5 star fast paced thriller that will keep you guessing and will keep you at the edge of your seat. At times creepy this book lived up to the hype, I high recommend!!

This audiobook was awesome! I loved having the 3 narrators and kept my attention the entire time. And the twists towards the end literally made my jaw drop.

I loved this story! I was not a fan of either of the other books by this author but this one was available as a free advanced copy download so I gave it a try. So glad I did!

This one jumps right into the story, alternate perspectives and moves quickly with lots of twists and turns and a very satisfying ending.

The only complaint I have about this one was that I got it in audio book format and the section that is narrated by the killer is read through a voice distortion filter and it’s almost physically painful to listen to. Fortunately most of the story goes back and forth between the two main protagonists and the killer’s sections are short because if I had to listen to much more of that voice distortion I might have given up.

Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy of this audiobook.
Firstly I'd like to talk about the audiobook. I thought it was very well done, I liked the narrators a lot and thought they did an excellent job and the voice distortion aspect was clever.
This was my first Alice Feeney and I was excited to jump right in as I'd heard good things about her other books and the premise sounded interesting. This book was fast-paced and well-written. I liked the main points of view and thought the author's use of, particularly Anna and Jack's, perspectives was clever and contributed well to the development of the plot, having said that though there were some parts that I thought were a little lazy, I won't mention specifics for fear of spoiling it but there were a few red-herrings that I thought the book could've done without and just seem weirdly out of place. Of course, they did their jobs in that they confuse the reader but they often stuck-out like sore-thumbs, and because they served no purpose other than to confuse the reader after they were explained away they just felt like strange creases in the story without proper resolution. Along with this, there were parts that were so elaborate I just couldn't believe. The relationships and character dynamics were good - at times the tension was palpable - and I thought the individual characters were well fleshed-out: it was easy to see from the main characters' points of view and I understood their motivations.
Unfortunately, though, I found this book to be quite predictable. I am an avid thriller reader and I honestly feel like I've read this book 100 times before. In comparison against my favourites, this book proved to be pretty standard; it was okay but it didn't blow my mind. There were quite a few tropes which despite the main character insisting they weren't the same tropes you see in every thriller definitely still were. One particular trope I cannot stand is the menacing villain caricature which this book had in heaps. I'm fine with the antagonist being a narrator and taunting the main characters but it's the silly, almost comic, exaggeration I can't handle. I've seen it 1000 times before and it got old quick.
The ending was alright, but again, it feels like I've read this 100 times before. I didn't dislike this book and I think for someone just coming into the thriller genre, looking for something dark, I think this is a pretty good start. It just didn't blow my mind.

A gripping thrill ride I couldn't put down. Excellent story and the audio made it come to life with fantastic narrators.

Absolutely brilliant! It’s currently 6 in the morning and I stayed up the entire night to finish His & Hers. It is so exciting that it is near impossible to put down.

I have only read one other book by Alice Feeney but this book has certified her as one of my new favorite authors.

I thought I had guessed what the ending would be, but I was completely wrong. I’m already recommending it to friends, because it is a book that very much deserves all of the praise.

The characters are dynamic and well-thought out. The plot never slows down and is constantly ramping up the tension and suspense. There are so many plot twists that completely caught me by surprise.

I am so grateful to the author and publisher for granting my request to read this book. The narrators were fantastic and this book is officially one of my favorites of the year.

My first audiobook review! I wasn't sure I would like this. Then I realized how much time I have that I cannot read but would love to have something to keep my mind going. Running alone, is enough time to get a good way through a book. I was worried I would not be able to immerse myself into an audiobook the way I can when I am reading. I love creating the voices of the characters in my head. Would someone else's voice work for me?

The answer, it turns out is...sometimes. This book went back and forth, telling both sides of the story of two former spouses as they are entangled in a murder mystery. The "His" , a police officer investigating a murder that he maybe shouldn't, worked for me. The voice kept me in the story. The "Hers", not as much. I found her grating and just wanted her parts to be over. The voice, for me, did not match the character as I was putting her together.

The story itself is pretty twisty. You are taken between different perspectives, often getting multiple perspectives of the same thing. Yes, multiple, because there are more than two. His and Hers are clearly identified. The third perspective of the murderer is not. It's meant, I think, to be an internal voice. It is meant to keep you guessing as to whose internal voice you are hearing. That is part of the fun. Throughout, the author keeps you looking for clues. In the end, you can look back and see what some of those clues were and place them logically in the story. The good mysteries do that.

Overall, not a bad foray into audiobooks. I thank Netgalley, the author, and the publisher fro giving me this opportunity to expand my enjoyment of books into my busier, less book-friendly times.

Wow, wow, wow! This is an EXCELLENT audiobook! There were so many plausible suspects and unlikeable characters. The narration is excellent! And I love the distorted voice for the killer. This was my first novel by Alice Feeney and now I can’t wait to acquire her previously published works. Such a greatly written, engaging, twisted, suspenseful thriller that kept me guessing up to the very end.

My only feedback for the book would be that sometimes the dialogue is written in a way that doesn’t translate well to audio. Sometimes, for example, the male voice is reading the dialogue for both Him and Her but there is no change in tone or key texts such as “she said/he said” to help the listener know who is saying what. Otherwise, this book was a beautifully written thriller!

Stephanie Racine did a great job with Anna, even though she’s not the most likable character. I wanted to love Richard Armitage and his Jack was interesting. But the killer’s sections with the distorted voice were so off putting that I couldn’t bear it.
