This audiobook was awesome! I loved having the 3 narrators and kept my attention the entire time. And the twists towards the end literally made my jaw drop.
I loved this story! I was not a fan of either of the other books by this author but this one was available as a free advanced copy download so I gave it a try. So glad I did!
This one jumps right into the story, alternate perspectives and moves quickly with lots of twists and turns and a very satisfying ending.
The only complaint I have about this one was that I got it in audio book format and the section that is narrated by the killer is read through a voice distortion filter and it’s almost physically painful to listen to. Fortunately most of the story goes back and forth between the two main protagonists and the killer’s sections are short because if I had to listen to much more of that voice distortion I might have given up.
Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy of this audiobook.
Firstly I'd like to talk about the audiobook. I thought it was very well done, I liked the narrators a lot and thought they did an excellent job and the voice distortion aspect was clever.
This was my first Alice Feeney and I was excited to jump right in as I'd heard good things about her other books and the premise sounded interesting. This book was fast-paced and well-written. I liked the main points of view and thought the author's use of, particularly Anna and Jack's, perspectives was clever and contributed well to the development of the plot, having said that though there were some parts that I thought were a little lazy, I won't mention specifics for fear of spoiling it but there were a few red-herrings that I thought the book could've done without and just seem weirdly out of place. Of course, they did their jobs in that they confuse the reader but they often stuck-out like sore-thumbs, and because they served no purpose other than to confuse the reader after they were explained away they just felt like strange creases in the story without proper resolution. Along with this, there were parts that were so elaborate I just couldn't believe. The relationships and character dynamics were good - at times the tension was palpable - and I thought the individual characters were well fleshed-out: it was easy to see from the main characters' points of view and I understood their motivations.
Unfortunately, though, I found this book to be quite predictable. I am an avid thriller reader and I honestly feel like I've read this book 100 times before. In comparison against my favourites, this book proved to be pretty standard; it was okay but it didn't blow my mind. There were quite a few tropes which despite the main character insisting they weren't the same tropes you see in every thriller definitely still were. One particular trope I cannot stand is the menacing villain caricature which this book had in heaps. I'm fine with the antagonist being a narrator and taunting the main characters but it's the silly, almost comic, exaggeration I can't handle. I've seen it 1000 times before and it got old quick.
The ending was alright, but again, it feels like I've read this 100 times before. I didn't dislike this book and I think for someone just coming into the thriller genre, looking for something dark, I think this is a pretty good start. It just didn't blow my mind.
A gripping thrill ride I couldn't put down. Excellent story and the audio made it come to life with fantastic narrators.
Absolutely brilliant! It’s currently 6 in the morning and I stayed up the entire night to finish His & Hers. It is so exciting that it is near impossible to put down.
I have only read one other book by Alice Feeney but this book has certified her as one of my new favorite authors.
I thought I had guessed what the ending would be, but I was completely wrong. I’m already recommending it to friends, because it is a book that very much deserves all of the praise.
The characters are dynamic and well-thought out. The plot never slows down and is constantly ramping up the tension and suspense. There are so many plot twists that completely caught me by surprise.
I am so grateful to the author and publisher for granting my request to read this book. The narrators were fantastic and this book is officially one of my favorites of the year.
My first audiobook review! I wasn't sure I would like this. Then I realized how much time I have that I cannot read but would love to have something to keep my mind going. Running alone, is enough time to get a good way through a book. I was worried I would not be able to immerse myself into an audiobook the way I can when I am reading. I love creating the voices of the characters in my head. Would someone else's voice work for me?
The answer, it turns out is...sometimes. This book went back and forth, telling both sides of the story of two former spouses as they are entangled in a murder mystery. The "His" , a police officer investigating a murder that he maybe shouldn't, worked for me. The voice kept me in the story. The "Hers", not as much. I found her grating and just wanted her parts to be over. The voice, for me, did not match the character as I was putting her together.
The story itself is pretty twisty. You are taken between different perspectives, often getting multiple perspectives of the same thing. Yes, multiple, because there are more than two. His and Hers are clearly identified. The third perspective of the murderer is not. It's meant, I think, to be an internal voice. It is meant to keep you guessing as to whose internal voice you are hearing. That is part of the fun. Throughout, the author keeps you looking for clues. In the end, you can look back and see what some of those clues were and place them logically in the story. The good mysteries do that.
Overall, not a bad foray into audiobooks. I thank Netgalley, the author, and the publisher fro giving me this opportunity to expand my enjoyment of books into my busier, less book-friendly times.
Wow, wow, wow! This is an EXCELLENT audiobook! There were so many plausible suspects and unlikeable characters. The narration is excellent! And I love the distorted voice for the killer. This was my first novel by Alice Feeney and now I can’t wait to acquire her previously published works. Such a greatly written, engaging, twisted, suspenseful thriller that kept me guessing up to the very end.
My only feedback for the book would be that sometimes the dialogue is written in a way that doesn’t translate well to audio. Sometimes, for example, the male voice is reading the dialogue for both Him and Her but there is no change in tone or key texts such as “she said/he said” to help the listener know who is saying what. Otherwise, this book was a beautifully written thriller!
Stephanie Racine did a great job with Anna, even though she’s not the most likable character. I wanted to love Richard Armitage and his Jack was interesting. But the killer’s sections with the distorted voice were so off putting that I couldn’t bear it.
4.5 stars
Superbly written psychological murder mystery thriller! I was kept in the dark until the end wondering who was committing the murders and why. I thought I had it figured out many times, and just when I got comfortable with my choice, another twist was thrown in to confuse things once again.
I listened to this as an audio book and the sections are narrated separately: His, Hers, and the Villain. The narrators are excellent and the clever use of a voice modulator for the villain is both supremely creepy and ingenious to keep the listener in the dark.
Feeney has a way with words and turning a phrase that is beautifully elegant. I honestly felt like I got to know the characters, especially Anna and her brokenness. The emptiness inside of her echoes through her words, and Stephanie Racine does a superior job with conveying that in the audio book.
Highly recommended for thriller and mystery readers, especially as an audio book.
I really enjoyed this audiobook and thought the narrators were fantastic. I enjoyed the format that switches between her (BBC tv reporter Anna Andrews), him (Anna’s ex-husband Jack / police officer) and mystery murder who could be him, her or someone else. I didn’t care for the sexual assault but overall would recommend the book.
4.5/5
Anna is a successful news anchor for the BBC but when Kat Jones returns from a two-year maternity leave, the news agency feels obligated to give Jones' her slot back, pushing Anna down the totem poll. Back in the field, Anna is sent to cover a murder that occurs in the quiet town of Blackdown.
The DC on the case, Jack Harper, is a little too connected to the murder victim for his liking. In fact, he slept with the woman last night. The crime scene becomes even more potentially dangerous for him when his tenacious ex-wife, Anna Andrews, shows up to cover the murder.
It becomes apparent that the murder in Blackdown is the work of a serial killer and at every step, Jack is looking more and more guilty.
Told from three different perspectives - Jack, Anna, and the killer - we gained different pieces of the story and learned a lot of the characters' histories. There were points in time where I was convinced that just about every character might be the killer.
The audio was fantastic. I loved the use of multiple narrators and the voice change machine for the killer. The narrators were easy to connect with and the level of theatrics was perfect.
All in all, this was a wild ride!! This book will surprise you and keep you on the edge of your seat. I absolutely recommend it!!
"click click, click click"
Holy Crap this book!! If you like unreliable narrators, books that you can’t put down and a book that keeps you guessing and guessing this book is for you! If you were a fan of Feeney’s book ‘Sometimes I Lie’ you will love this one I think this one is even better if that is possible!
Sometimes the past comes back to haunt you and it may be closer than you think! So many unreliable narrators in this one I can’t say too much because I can’t give anything away! But you need to order this book!
Narrators Richard Armitage & Stephanie Racine both did a really good job at telling their part of the story.
I gave ‘Sometimes I Lie’ 5 Stars so this one is 5 stars too I think this one might have been a tish bit better!
Thank you to the publisher Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for his early review copy
WOW WOW WOW. This book was addictive. It was a layered narrative, with writing that reminded me of Gillian Flynn. I was fascinated the entire way through. I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrators were fantastic!
From @flatiron_books: "There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means someone is always lying.
When a woman is murdered in Blackdown, a quintessentially British village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Detective Jack Harper is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation.
Someone isn’t telling the truth, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.
His & Hers is a twisty, smart, psychological thriller. A gripping tale of suspense, told by expertly-drawn narrators that will keep readers guessing until the very end."
[triggers: child loss, sexual assault]
Thank you to @netgalley, @macmillan.audio, and @alicewriterland for providing me with a copy of this title in exchange for my review. It will be released next TUESDAY! 😍 I'll put a reminder in my stories that day.
This may be the very first mystery/thriller that I've given 5 stars to, so that should say something about how amazing this book was. While reading this book, although it kept my engaged, I thought it was good but not great. I mind kept on drifting off and I didn't feel connected to the book. This change for my very fast in the last 20% of the book. Those last 20% were some of the most thrilling pages I have every read. That was when the book really hooked me in and I knew this would be a 5 star read for me.
The last fifth of the book was a roller coaster. I've always prided myself in being able to guess the murderer in books but this book made me fall flat on my butt. Wow was I wrong with my prediction but I wasn't upset with it. I'm so glad the author choose what she did. As all of pieces landed into place, I made me appreciate the ground work from the first 80% of the book.
My favourite part of this book is that when I thought I knew everything and I has thought it was the end, it proved my wrong again and again. If you think this book is slow for you or not interesting, please give it a chance till the ending. I think the book is able to truly shine then.
A good thriller that kept you guessing. It kept me guessing from the beginning to the end and the end was a totally shocked never considered that character has the killer never in my wildest dreams
The downside is the creepy narrator voice when that part arrived I cringed.
For my first Audiobook it was a good one.
Thank you NetGalley, MacMillian Audio and Alice Feeney for this free audio in exchange of an honest review.
I enjoyed this fast-paced and twisty audiobook. Without revealing details about how things shake out – I thought I was right, then thought I was wrong - I thought the misdirection using the three POV was well done. It turns out I was right in the end, but the author had me doubtful and confused towards the end of the book.
I liked the performances of both narrators in the audiobook and would recommend this to anyone who likes listening to mystery/thrillers.
Thanks for adding audiobooks!
This is my first audiobook (or any book) from NetGallery and it was a great way to start! I'll admit, I am typically not the biggest fan of audiobooks, so reviewing one was an unusual decision for me. I have been on a recent journey to try and find some audiobooks with more engaging narration in hopes that I will enjoy them more. I kept seeing this one pop up, so I figured I would give it a go. I have to say, it is definitely the best I have heard since I began listening to them! I absolutely loved the alternating POVs being read in three different voices and I think this is the reason I liked the experience so much. All the narrating was extremely well done and the story line was very interesting and engaging. I love a good thriller and find that even when a book is really well written, it is difficult to find something that has a twist that really wows the reader! I actually was given a spoiler from someone that made me believe the killer was someone it wasn't, so my experience may have been a little tainted midway through, but I was still surprised in the end. Although it slowed for me a bit at one point in the second half, I think it could just be that audiobooks always feel longer to me. I do think a lot of people won't see this one coming and there were a few other fun twists thrown in as well. I can't wait to read some more of this author's other works and definitely recommend checking this one out!
I’m so grateful to the author, publisher & NetGalley for this ARC! It’s just amazing!! There are some very creepy, sadistic characters with fast paced action. There is no lull in this one. Included are twists and turns that keep the reader intrigued and wondering just who is responsible. The end seems to a sweet all the questions, but then Sweeney throws a wrench in that shatters it all! NetGalley is now offering audiobooks ARCs, which is a dream come true for me, as they are my favorite! NetGalley also provided the audio version of this! I am over the moon excited for audiobook ARCs! This one is perfection. Narrators are just right! Must read!!
Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an audio ARC of this book! Release date - July 28, 2020
This book was so great! I really love Alice Feeney. Her books always deliver a twist that I never see coming. While I still think I liked Sometimes I Lie a little bit more, this one was still fantastic. She has a way of writing that you just never know who is quite trustworthy and who is telling the truth and what is really going on until the very end. Things were slowly revealed throughout this book in a way that made all the puzzle pieces fit together. This is the first book in a long time where the twist actually made me want to go back and reread certain parts knowing what I know at the end.
The audiobook deserves special mention as well. I absolutely love that NetGalley is doing audio now and this one was especially great. Both readers had pleasant voices that were easy to listen to. They also really put the emotion into the story, they weren't just reading, they were the characters. And then the addition of the disguised/distorted voice for the murderer was excellent, not only so that you wouldn't know who it was, but that disguised/distorted voice actually played a part in the storyline. It was so well done.
Just as a warning, there are some disturbing moments in this book so I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, specifically rape, bullying, and animal abuse.
I am such a huge fan of Alice Feeney. This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it did not disappoint. I can't wait to see what she writes next.
Omg. I’m just finishing His and Hers and now I have to reread the entire thing!! So weird and twisty (and not a little disturbing). Everything I love.
