This was certainly a dark, twisty, and engaging story!

So I’ve never read a book by Alice Feeney before. The synopses have never called to me although I did pick up a secondhand copy of her debut when a Facebook reading group chose it for discussion. In the end, I never even cracked it open. There’s a chance it would have ended up in my unhaul pile if NetGalley and the publisher hadn’t offered His and Hers as one of the “listen now” picks from the new NetGalley selection. I figured I’d give it a try to find out what I thought of this author.

I won’t be unhauling that other book after all! I need to read more Alice Feeney!

The audiobook narration was fantastic. The voices behind Jack and Anna were so believable as they read their parts that it was easy to forget that they were not truly Jack and Anna. I think an added benefit of the audiobook is the creepy third unidentified narrator whose voice is altered through a distortion device. I imagine reading “Kill them all” will not have the same chilling effect as hearing this voice say it does and, though I rarely say this, I truly think audio is the way to go with this one. It really does bring the story to life.

I do think Jack made some extremely foolish choices and while I know the author had him make those choices so she could work out certain details in the story, this is one aspect that annoyed me a bit. Otherwise, the book definitely keeps you guessing until the end. While some of the misdirection felt blatantly obvious, which may have been the author’s intention, my head continued to spin in every wrong direction until the very end. The conclusion played out with satisfying surprises.

I am not in the habit of including trigger warnings, especially since I do read a lot of thrillers and horrors and I know to expect distressing scenes, I was recently made aware of how traumatizing another book I’ve raved about was for a friend. I do want to note that this book contains some very disturbing content.

If you can stomach the dark details and want a book that keeps you guessing, His and Hers by Alice Feeney is definitely the one to look out for!

Thank you to the publisher for my review copy provided through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

4.5/5 stars for this thriller!
There are SO MANY twists and turns in this book! A unique story, great unreliable characters! I really enjoyed the tri-narration. The female narrator was my favorite, but I'm a sucker for a good dual + narrated story! Highly recommend!

There are three sides to every story, his, hers, and the truth. She is a news reporter, he is a DCI. Both are called to work at the same series of murders. But who will find the truth, when the dead are related to both their pasts.

This was a much anticipated read for me. A little slow to begin with but half way through it really picked up the speed that went to the max by the time I reached to the end. Really gripping and very enjoyable, I legit did not want to put the book down (read: my earphones). I honestly thought I had the end all figured out but I was oh so wrong.

But here’s the thing, I found it very realistic, I mean, it’s kinda hard to believe that the characters did what they did given their ages. But that does not take away the enjoyment of it all, if you can just keep the reality away that is, which is often not an easy thing for me to do, I like my fiction close to reality 😄. But again the whole thing was a quick, enjoyable read.

The audio is pretty good too, both the narrators are great, even at high speed, the words were crisp and the emotions were translated well in the narration. But the killer’s voice, even though it was digitally distorted to not reveal the identity, I thought it was misleading.

TW for sexual abuse and animal cruelty.

Thanks to Netgalley, author, and publishers for the audio ARC

I recently listened to “His & Hers” audiobook and enjoyed every bit of it! It’s been a while since I’ve read such a good thriller, one that had me wondering who the killer might be! Even though I was sure, after some point in the book, about the killer’s identity, that assumption changed twice as the book was reaching the end!

Anna Andrews is the main TV presenter in the BBC’s lunchtime news. She worked really hard to get there, sucrificing friends, family, her own life and her now ex-husband. But she’s on her dream job now and she’s happy to have it. Only that, that dream may not last. She’s about to lose her presenter’s position and she doesn’t plan to go without a fight! When she is asked to cover a story in Blackdown, the village she grew up, she is reluctant to go. As the story develops, it turns out that the murdered victim is a person she new from school. A childhood friend. Now, she cannot abandon the story. She’s more than just involved with it.

DCI Jack Harper has left London and returned to Blackdown for his own reasons. He expected it to be far more quieter than the big city, so when a body is found in the woods he’s more than surprised. It becomes even stranger for him when he realizes that he not only knows the victim, but he was with her the night before. He decides not to tell anyone about that, but as the investigation proceeds, he becomes one of the suspects. He must find the truth before it is too late.

The book has two point of views. Just as the title suggests, we get to read Anna’s and Jack’s points of view, His & Hers, and somewhere in between, the killer’s view. This is a really good mind trick and the author has done a great job playing games to the reader. I was trying to match the killer’s parts with some of the other two points of view, feeling that one of them must be the killer. One of them is telling the truth and the other one is lying. After all these were the two sides of the same story! It was so difficult!

The experience of the audiobook was magnificent! Richard Armitage was narrating Jack’s point of view and Stephanie Racine was narrating Anna’s. But which one was narrating the killer’s point of view? I have no idea! Neither have I managed to ever understand the difference or the similarities between them. The killer’s narrator was using a voice distorter, so I had no chance finding out! Apart from that, which was a great experience, I really liked all the emotions that both the narrators put in. I could clearly understand the different emotional steps Anna was going through and the same stands for Jack. Overall, I really enjoyed the audiobook experience and I recommend it to everyone!

Thank you to NetGalley & Macmillan Audio for an advance copy of this book. The views expressed are my personal and honest opinion.

“His & Hers” is set to publish July 28, 2020

A murder has just occurred in the small village of Blackdown. DCI Jack Harper is assigned to investigate but things get complicated real fast when the victim is found to be a woman he has a connection to. To make matters worse Jack’s ex-wife Anna Andrews is back in town reporting on the crime for BBC TV with her own connections to the victim. With twists and turns and a seemingly endless supply of secrets it’s a wild ride to the end. Chapters alternate between Jack and Anna’s pov with the occasional voice distorted killer chiming in.

It’s been ages since I’ve read a thriller and His & Hers did not disappoint. Alice Feeny will be added to my instant buy list because this book was so good. I can honestly say I had no idea who the killer was up until the very end and I can’t wait to read this again to see if I can pick up on all the clues. Richard Armitage and Stephanie Rancine did a great job narrating the pace was perfect.

Huge thank you to Flatiron/Macmillan and Netgalley for offering this up in audiobook format.

This was my second Alice Feeney book and she did not disappoint! I read I Know Who You Are earlier this year and was in love with the intricate story line and had high hopes for His and Hers. Anna, a BBC news anchor goes back to her hometown, Blacksdown to cover a murder. Her ex-husband, Jack is a detective there and he is trying to solve the murder when things really start to hit home. The two of them are closely related to the events taking place in Blacksdown. Who is committing these murders and why? I'm afraid to say too much because I don't want to give anything away! This psychological thriller had me at the edge of my seat until the very last page. The twists and turns were unexpected and each character played an integral part in how the story unfolded. This was truly brilliant.

This was my first audiobook ever and I was worried I would get distracted and not be able to focus but that was absolutely not the case. I'm officially an audiobook lover! I loved that the story was told in multiple point of views with a different narrator for Jack and Anna. The narrators were phenomenal and captured what was happening in the novel beautifully. If you're looking for a good psychological thriller, this is it.

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this ARC!

I was browsing the netgalley shelves when I came across this book by Alice Feeney. I hadn't read any of her books in the past and was in the mood for a good murder mystery and the premise of this book seemed very interesting.
The story itself is set in Blackdown a small region in Sussex County, UK. A woman is found brutally murdered with words carved into her skin. Anna Andrews, a BBC news TV presenter is sent to cover the story. In Blackdown, DCI Jack Harper and his team are working to solve the murder.

Now here are my issues with the book:
I was expecting a fast paced thriller that focused on police procedure and the team's efforts in apprehending the killer. Instead I got a sob story that focused on the characters' personal lives and issues. Let's start with Anna:

She's spent the last several years completely focused on her job to the exclusion of everything else except alcohol. Yes, shes an alcoholic. She's forgotten friends and family and is a total and complete loner with only alcohol and her own thoughts to keep her company. When she is tasked with the job of covering the murder in Blackdown, she's reluctant to go because she has some bad history in that town. At this, my curiosity was piqued.

The first 50% of the book was spent setting the stage for the story and revealing the connections between the characters:

Anna used to be Jack Harper's wife a while back and they had a child who died. Its clear that Anna hasn't come to terms with her loss and is still grieving for her child.

The person who was found murdered also happened to be Anna's friend Rachel from when she used to go to school in Blackdown. Rachel was also having an affair with Jack and was returning home from his house on the night that she was murdered. He fails to reveal this to his colleagues at the police department and soon after, the killer starts to taunt Jack by leaving items belonging to Rachel like her phone in Jack's car etc.

Instead of coming clean, he tries to hide evidence that continues to turn up and focuses on hiding his own connection to Rachel.

In the midst of all this drama, I felt like the author was trying to rekindle the connection between Anna and Jack and that was just adding to the pile of issues and I lost interest in the book. This was not a thriller, it was an angsty sob story and I had absolutely no ineterst in it.

5 stars.

Here’s the thing- I’m not giving any synopsis. GO IN BLIND. Go into this completely clueless because it will take you on a ride that will leave you reeling. I’m not exaggerating when I say that my jaw dropped several times. I craved the next chapter of this book when I wasn’t reading.
The funniest thing here is that I kept thinking I had guessed the plot twist early on. I got upset about 20% into it because i thought I had figured out the whole plot early. So young and naive. Things changed constantly! I kept thinking I had it figured out but Feeney wrote this book in a way that keeps you guessing until the very, very end.

Alice Feeney has officially become an author that I will devour anything she publishes.

From the first notes of the eerie music, I knew this was going to be a good listen. The voice of the killer was quite sinister and did a great job of leading the reader astray. Exes Jack, a detective and Anna, a reporter, find themselves thrown together when a killer is on the loose in the village they grew up in. Things heat up as both know the victims and things start to look like Jack just might be the perp in his own investigation. He lets us know he’s being framed, but is he, or is he an unreliable narrator. There are things Anna isn’t telling us either. With two sides to the story, we are left a bit unbalanced all the way through. If you think this is an easy case to solve guess again, and when you think you’ve figured it out the second time, keep guessing because this is quite the twisty story! Well done!

There are 2 sides to every story; yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers.

His & Hers tells the story of Jack and Anna, ex’s spouses, as they follow a murder investigation in their hometown of Blackdown. Anna is a BBC journalist there to cover the case, although she’s very hesitant to do so. Jack is a detective who is suspicious of her involvement until he’s a suspect himself. This book alternates between their 2 perspectives, and the killers, and had me guessing right to the very end. I had so many theories and I felt misdirected with every new chapter. I love that I never figured this thriller out.

I listened to this book on audiobook with Stephanie Racine and Richard Carmitage narrating. I was captivated with their voices immediately from the opening lines of the killer to telling the two sides of the story. They brought the book to life and did a wonderful job. I couldn’t stop listening!

His & Hers by Alice Feeney will be available to the US on July 28th. Thank you to @netgalley and @macmillan.audio for the advance listener copy in return for my honest review.

I LOVED THIS BOOK. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. NetGalley has started offering audiobooks and the narrators were spot on. There is a character whose voice is distorted and i loved it because you wouldn’t get that in a print copy, Anna is a BBC presenter in London and her ex, Jack, is a cop in the town where they grew up. When one of Anna’s friends from school is found dead, she is sent to cover the story. Jack is the officer in charge and he doesn’t want anyone to know that he was sleeping with the victim. As the bodies pile up, it’s obvious someone wants revenge. Who? Why? This book kept me up guessing and i was still wrong!!!!! I love that an author can do that tome. I’m glad it was in audio so that I couldn’t skip ahead to see if i was right. Can’t wait for the next book from Alice Feeney. READ THIS BOOK but plan on staying up to finish it,

4.5 stars! Holy moley, what a twisty, crazy ride this novel is! In what is sure to be known as her best book yet, Alice Feeney delivers a tour-de-force of epic proportions. Told from different points of views of the police officer/ex-husband & the news reporter/ex-wife, His & Hers outlines a murder in a small town & the way it is effecting them both. When listening, as I did, you also get the REALLY creepy voice distorted POV of the murderer. And it’s definitely NOT who you’d think!
Thank you to NetGalley for an early release of the audio book.

I struggled with this audio book at first, I wasn't sure I wanted to give in to this story of unlikable characters and slow, creepy voices. I stuck with it, and it paid off. The story got more and more interesting as it progressed and the voices made sense for the mood and purpose of the book. I could say I guessed at one point "who did it", but really my correct guess was one of many incorrect guesses and the twists and turns altered my perception of the unfolding mystery. Normally I would go right back and re-read to see the plot with new eyes, knowing where it is going, but this one is too dark to go through twice. That said, the one time was engaging and kept me on my toes.

This audio book was awesome! I love how we had a disguised voice for the murderer, That was so unique and had me guessing right up till the end. I wouldn’t say that all the twists were surprising but I loved how it all played out!

I have always said there are two sides to every story. Well, Alice Feeney proved that to be true! This story grabbed me from the beginning and didn’t let go! DCI Jack Harper and his ex wife Anna Andrews (BBN News reporter) are dragged into the middle of the murder of 2 women. Jack is trying to solve the murder with Priya the new cop. Anna is trying to report on the murders. The murders take place in their home town and with people they know. Every character you hear about leaves you believing they are the killer. At one time, I thought I had figured out who done it. But I was completely wrong!! That ending though 😳👀! Well done Alice Feeney!! This was my favorite book of hers yet! I would give this book hands down 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️’s!!! Thank you so much to NetGally for this advanced audio book!!

OMG people!!!! This audiobook was the creepiest thing Ive ever heard! One of "his" parts was through a voice distortion and the oddity of the sound made the insane words it spoke one of the creepiest things ever! Awesome job on the audio!
As for the story, Alice Feeney has done it again with a thriller that kept me guessing, I must've changed my mind four times on who dunnit, and never guessed right. I loved the psychological insights that Ms. Feeney so obviously has on the human heart and mind and I love the twisted way she thinks!!!! A five star audio and a five star story, win win!!! I highly recommend!!

Thank you so much NetGalley for the chance to listen to this early release audiobook in exchange for an honest review!

This book is stunning. Between the cover and the characters, the story and all the plot twists, and the flow of the book and soothing narration, I was left in awe.

In His & Hers, we follow the story from two character's perspectives.
Jack Harper is a detective in small town Blackdown, where the murder of a local woman takes place, which sort of kicks off the story.
Anna Andrews is a BBC news correspondent, who is sent to cover the story of the murder in Blackdown.
Through the story we get to learn how each of them has a deep history with the town, as well as the victims, and how that plays a role with the murders that take place.
This story does start out and continues through most of it at a pretty light -but not 'cozy'- and steady pace, but does get dark....suddenly, which only added an extra layer to this story and made me like it even more.
There are so many twists and misleading elements in this story, I was glued to my phone - I couldn't stop listening!

The narrators for this audiobook are honestly, phenomenal. They have a way of reading that grabs your attention and draws you in and makes you want to hear more. Their voices and tones are soothing, not to the point they will lull you to sleep, but are just very comforting to listen to, additionally, they compliment each other well. They use inflection of their voices positively to keep you on pace with the story, and they do a great way of making you feel completely engaged with the events happening. The transitions between each chapter, from Jack to Anna, is also so seamless and clear, you don't feel as if you've missed any aspect of the story or their investigations. Any time I thought I was coming to a good "break" point, the next chapter started up with an attention grabber and I just had to keep going. This is definitely one I would gladly listen to, rather than read.
The audio quality itself was also very impressive. It was extremely clear with no static, lagging, or skipping, and there weren't any parts with loud breathing, swallowing, or other unnecessary or background noises (which I've experienced with other audiobooks in the past).
I also thought it was pretty cool that the female narrator, Stephanie Racine, has also narrated other books by Alice Feeney and I like that continuity.

Overall, this was an awesome book and a great listening experience!

Trigger warnings: rape, domestic abuse, prostitution, drug/alcohol abuse.

What is it about a British accent? It’s so crisp. It makes every story better. But this was a fantastic thriller. Every time I thought, “ha! This is whodunit,” I was wrong. Even to the last ten minutes! There were so many twists and turns, but that didn’t make it difficult to follow. The characters were well developed. I most enjoyed listening to Jack. The narrator’s ability to slip in the inner thoughts Jack would have was humorous and gave Jack depth. Anna reminded me a lot of Rachel from The Girl on the Train - which is a good thing, because Rachel is one of my all time favorite unreliable narrators. This was a fantastic experience. I have had my eye on this thriller for a while, and I’m excited I got to listen to it on audiobook to review. I highly recommend this one.

Content warnings for sexual assault, grooming, eating disorders

This book was SO fast paced, and full of twists and turns. I never ever saw the ending coming. I felt like right up until the last few minutes I was constantly changing my mind about who I was convinced the bad guy was. Which, made it a VERY fun listen.
None of the characters are particularly likable, honestly, but I found the story to be so compelling that it didn't bother me that all of the characters were flawed to the point of being grating and awful.
I really enjoyed the alternating His/Hers/Mystery person views. It made the story that much more mysterious and challenging to guess who the bad guy could possibly be.

Wow - was I pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this audiobook!

The narrator was engaging. She did well with the three different voices of the main characters in the storyline, and kept at a good pace to keep you entertained.

This story is told by Anna, a television reporter, Her ex husband, Jack an investigator and he unknown killer.

This plot is difficult to review without spoilers. There are several murders throughout the story, all related but never quite giving away the true common thread.

In the end, it was a well put together story leading to the reveal and I’m fairly certain most people will have absolutely no idea who the villain will be.

An enjoyable audiobook that I finished in one sitting!

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with the audiobook version of this story in exchange for my honest review!
