Anna Andrews finally has what she wants. Almost. She’s worked hard to become the main TV presenter of the BBC’s lunchtime news, putting work before friends, family, and her now ex-husband. So, when someone threatens to take her dream job away, she’ll do almost anything to keep it.
When asked to cover a murder in Blackdown―the sleepy countryside village where she grew up―Anna is reluctant to go. But when the victim turns out to be one of her childhood friends, she can’t leave. It soon becomes clear that Anna isn’t just covering the story, she’s at the heart of it.
DCI Jack Harper left London for a reason, but never thought he’d end up working in a place like Blackdown. When the body of a young woman is discovered, Jack decides not to tell anyone that he knew the victim, until he begins to realise he is a suspect in his own murder investigation.
One of them knows more than they are letting on. Someone isn’t telling the truth
A little predictable but over all a good audiobook, wonderful narrator. I have read all of Alice Feeny books and this one is by far my favorite. Excited to read more by this author.
The narrators did a great job in capture the intrigue, the mysteriousness, and all the other emotions, like hatred, distaste, anger, and downright pettiness. I listened to this tale totally engrossed with the puzzling twist from the beginning to the end and still, I was surprised by who the culprit of these dastardly deeds was. I have to say though the author did a great job in the twisting plot of this tale. A truly twisted, demented, and captivating read.
This story is great as it keeps you in suspense while you listen and Terry to figure out who is actually telling the truth.
The narrators bring the story to life in a way that makes you like the characters no matter how hard you try not to.

Thank you to netgalley and McMillan audio for an audio copy that makes this book even more phenomenal than it already is!!! ⠀

⠀
Holy crap! This is one of the best written and narrated books I have read in a really long time! Who would of thought that a book written in 3 perspectives could be so mysteriously addictive, and creepy! ⠀
⠀
His, Hers, and the murder’s perspective gives you insights into each of the characters and their roles in the story. They all intertwine perfectly weaving a crazy web of secrets, lies, and their own thoughts on “the truth”. ⠀
⠀
I loved the raw and unfiltered thoughts of the characters. Having the story told by each side separately really makes these thoughts stand out! You get a sense of the characters inner world, emotions, and their mindset.⠀
⠀
I loved all the crazy twists and dark backstories that are revealed as you get further into every chapter! These are some serious messed up people! ⠀
⠀
⠀
I thought I knew what was going on but I was so incredibly wrong!!! When everything was revealed I literally yelled “Holy Crap! That’s Crazy! “ ⠀
⠀
I’m not kidding you I was floored by the ending of this book! It is one of the few I have read that I was utterly shocked by!⠀
I then proceeded to laugh because I was so shocked and it was so incredibly brilliant, there was no way in hell I would ever have seen that coming! ⠀
⠀
This book goes down as being one of the most awesome ending ever!!! ⠀

I thought this was really good until the end. I don’t know if this was because I was listening to the audiobook, but I’m actually confused who the killer is. Is it the mother or Anna? I thought I got it until the narrator changed voice at the very end.
I thought the story was engaging and I was constantly guessing who the killer was.
The characters were okay but I didn’t really care for them.
Overall, I don’t know if I would recommend this because I missed the big reveal at the end.
This was my first audio version, very nice experience, calming steady voice.
Still will choose the reading version.
There are two sides to every story HIS (Detective Jack Harper) and HERS (Anna Andrews, BBC News anchor).
Anna, is newly single, estranged from her mother and someone who drinks too much. She's also someone with some dark secrets from her past when she was a teen, which are about to come back and haunt her. When Anna is sent to cover a murder story in the quiet village of Blackdown, the victim turns out to be a woman she knew in her past.
Jack is a police detective, also single and also covering the same case. He arrives at the scene and realizes that he knows the victim as well, but, he decides not tell anyone just what he knows. Jack also drinks a bit too much.
When more women with connections to Anna and Jack end up dead, with a signature item tied to each of their tongues, it looks as if a serial killer is out there. Who will the next victim be? Who is lying?
I loved almost everything about this psych thriller. The (2) unreliable narrators alternate the short chapters of this novel. I loved how only bits and pieces of info/clues are revealed throughout the book, allowing the read to speculate what may have happened along the way and in the past. As the story progresses the web gets larger - who is the killer and what was the motive?
What I hated - SPOILER - cat lovers, like me, will be appalled at what they read on page 247. Why do authors have to spoil books for animal lovers by resorting to animal abuse? It's toward the last 50 or so pages of the book so, I felt I still had to see how this one ended since I was already so invested. However, what would have been a 5 star rating is no more. This was a fast paced page turning thriller that I was able to read in just 2-sittings. Well, done except for what I cited previously. I started this book on audio and it is well-done but, the male voice was really creepy, too creepy to listen to before bedtime so I picked up the audio as well.
a couple quotes that I liked....
"We rarely deserve the lives we lead. We pay for them however we can, be it with money, guilt or regret."
"Silence is my favorite sympathy, I can't think clearly when life gets too loud."
"Some people build invisible walls around themselves in the name of self-observation. Hers was tall, solid and impenetrable."
Loved this! The different narrators and the alternating chapters kept this story compelling and moving forward. Usually I find myself liking one perspective better than the other but they were well balanced and I loved the little surprises and the big one at the end
WHEW.
Hold on to your f@#*ing hat folks. His and Hers is great, but you will have whiplash when you are done reading/listening.
I was lucky enough to get an early copy this summer from NetGalley and McMillan Audio at the start of NetGalley’s audio book offerings. This was the perfect first pick.
I had never encountered Alice Feeny’s writing before, and maybe I should have dug a little deeper before I decided to hop right on in and give His & Hers a listen.
The breakneck pace, red herring palooza, and outright wild ending had me literally gasping aloud once I finally pieced together whodunit. Mind you throughout the book I had 5 suspects. No joke I had a running notebook with suspects (clearly why I’m an actor and not an actual detective I suppose…)
And let me tell you I was dead wrong every time! Ms. Feeny should be crowned queen of the misdirect. She had me so convinced in the end I knew who did it, that I kid you not I sat at my kitchen table (now office given the current Pandemic situation) and intently listening with my mouth hanging open and missing not one but two conference calls.
Wildly well written, I am considering reading the physical book next and checking out her other books.
Now in terms of listening, we all know narrators make or break the audiobook experience. I honestly picked this book at first because I love Richard Armitage. He’s spectacular in this and I could honestly listen to him read the phone book not to mention Stephanie Racine, is also wonderful and a delight to listen to!
I will say, I would have appreciated at content /trigger warning for grooming (re: sexual relationships) and animal cruelty.
Overall though fantastic audiobook, and I am looking forward to Alice Feeny’s next title!
4.5 stars
Alice Feeney takes the reader to a true His & Hers case, where you never know who is telling the truth:
Anna Andrews had her dream job but then it was snatched away from her and she was sent back to do field work as a reporter. She never imagined that on one of her first story she would be covering a murder from the small town that she grew up in, a place she never wanted to return to. When the victim turns out to be a friend she had growing up, Anna finds her self trying to solve what happened but also finds that that she is a suspect as well. It also does not help that her ex-husband is the DI in charge of the case. But Jack has his own secrets to keep, he knows the victim as well but much more recently and he may be a suspect in his own murder investigation. Someone isn't telling the truth, and that is going to be deadly.
This is the first book that I have read by Feeney so I was not sure what to expect and what I received was a mystery/thriller book that had me continually changing my mind as to who the murderer was. This book has so many twists and turns and just when you think you’ve figured it out there is another possibility around the bend or some new evidence that comes forward that makes your suspect look innocent. I went back and forth many times that by the end I will say that I had not, at that time, picked the correct person who was the killer. So high points for that Feeney, very high points. Feeney was able to weave a well thought out and dark plot throughout the book and this shines through with ever twist that she puts in there that you do not see coming.
It’s hard to really like either of the main characters, as they are both really flawed in their own way and at times so extremely selfish that they put not only themselves but others at risk unnecessarily. Honestly, there were times when I questioned their actions to the point of would someone really do this/make this decision, especially Jack as a police officer. I guess them having flaws makes them more human and I guess root for them not to be killed as well murder is a horrible thing but there was just not a lot of likeable qualities between the two of them.
I enjoyed that this had multiple points of views, literately, His and Hers, as the book is titled. There are also a few chapters in which we get to hear from the killer, as they talk about how they achieved the murder and why that individual had to die. This makes the book out to be a bit of a game by having the story structured this way, you need to determine who is telling the truth and who is not as well as determine who has the biggest motive to have these women killed. So that made the book more engaging and fun to read
As the first book tat I have read by Feeny I know that this will not be the last. Any book where I cannot figure out who the killer is will have me picking up the other books that they have written. If you're looking for a twisty serial killer book, then this one is for you.
Enjoy!!!
I listened to the audiobook for this title and honestly I really wasn’t in love with it. I felt like the story didn’t flow, going back and forth with the story confused me. I felt the suspense wasn’t there and the characters fell short for me. I wished there was a back story then go to present not back and forth because then I get lost. I did like how there was a perspective of both the detective and the friend. It did make me question who did it, but I just didn’t enjoy it. Everyone else loved it and I wish I did too. Also, it verge being too inappropriate for my liking, so another reason it wasn’t for me.
Super dark and twisty. I’m not a fan of story’s with u reliable narrators so I’m not sure how I really feel about this book.
I love getting the villains POV though.
The narration was great
A convoluted murder story with so many suspects I had no idea who was the perpetrator. They all had a possible motive and the opportunity but whoever it turned out to be they were seriously disturbed. Quite gruesome and very confusing I sometimes thought I was the one going mad. All nicely tied up in the last chapter.
His and Hers is a great listen! Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine did and excellent job of bringing the characters to life and allowing the suspense of the mystery to build gradually. I found that the back and forth flowed very smoothly and added to the drama of the story.
Anna Andrews and Jack Harper have a unique history which is not immediately apparent. There are mysteries within mysteries throughout the storyline and I found it to be very engaging from the start. The characters are multi-faceted which makes them more relatable and fascinating in my opinion. The conclusion rolled out easily and fit with the events that had transpired.
If you're looking for your next audiobook, I would definitely recommend this one.
What the actual.... Listening to the audio of this completely enhanced the story! I pegged the ending early on but I still had to know the how and why. The alternating points of view really bring this story to life.
Anna's group of friends from high school are being murdered and they're sure Anna is next. Her ex husband, Jack, is the detective on the case and he's trying to find the killer before they can get to Anna. She is the one reporting the news of each death and doesn't seem to be bothered in the least. Is she the one killing them? Jack was the last one to see Rachel alive, maybe it was him? Anna's cameraman is involved with one of the women, maybe it's him? Such a game of cat & mouse. There are always two sides to every story and the truth is always somewhere in the middle.
Aaaaah, so good. I loved this story, it was suspenseful and kept me on my toes.
I really loved how the audiobook was narrated, it made the perfect fit.
Right from the off, I was taken with this audiobook. Richard Armitage is a stellar narrator and Stephanie Racine, though new to me, was equally impressive. But the story!! Disturbing, dark, twisty... This book threw punches left and right that I definitely did not see coming.
Anna Andrews, a television journalist, is sent to her hometown to cover a murder that quickly turns into a series of murders. There, she confronts not only her aging mother, suffering from dementia, but her ex-husband, the memories of their sad past, and the secrets of her disturbing past that she's kept buried.
The twists and turns in this book are so wild! Every single time I thought I had it figured out, it dropped another bombshell! The ending was so jarring that I quite literally felt like I'd been slapped. It just comes out of nowhere! This was shockingly clever. Highly recommended to anyone looking for an excellent thriller!
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the review copy of this audiobook!
SOLID 5 STARS! THIS BOOK WAS GREAT! I loved this story so much. It gave me all feels I was looking for. I couldn't wait when this came out because it was on my list to read from the first time I read the synopsis. I had to read when it released. This plot and story were done great and so easy to follow. I loved the narrator. Kept me intrigued in the story the entire time. This will be a book that will stick with me.
I highly recommend this read!
Anna Andrews was finally excited to have her dream job, the main TV news anchor. Unfortunately for her she learned she was only to cover the position from a co worker on maternity leave. Anna wasn’t a crime reporter but when asked to cover a murder in Blackdown, the quiet countryside of her childhood her curiosity gets the best of her and she agrees. She was shocked to learn the body found was that of her childhood friend, Anna soon learns that she is not only the reporter on the case but part of it too!
DC Jack Harper is back in London after telling himself he never wanted to work there again, so he sees the body of the woman he decides to stay quiet and not let it be known he knows her. It isn’t until he finds out that he’s a suspect in his own murder investigation
Alternating between Anna and Jack It’s a true statement to say, there’s 3 sides to every story, his, hers and the truth but what exactly is the truth and whose holding back with more than they’re saying?
Thank you Netgalley, I give this book 4 stars, I enjoy reading Alice Feeney and appreciated the opportunity for a chance to have read this book and give an honest review.
Such a fun ride!
I listened to this one on audio and it was a great experience because the narrator had different voices for the make and female protagonists, as well as an altered "scary voice" for the unknown killer.
I was a huge fan of Sometimes I Lie so I was really excited to see what else Alice Feeney had up her sleeve. This was a really well written thriller with lots of twists and turns and red herrings thrown in to keep you guessing. Unfortunately, I guessed the big twist pretty early on, but I'm not sure if I would have picked up on it if I was reading the book instead of listening.
All in all, a really fun spooky read, perfect for a rainy day.
