This series is always in high demand at my library. The characters Daryna Jones uses are delightful and my readers love getting to know them more each book. Fabulous series!
Charley, as usual, is trying to solve crimes, avoiding demons and dealing with her attraction to Reyes. She’s also trying to stay away from her dad since his betrayal. She finds out that she has more gifts than she knew and realizes she’s capable of so much more. I loved the case she’s trying to solve. I was so invested in it wondering what was going on. These are quick reads and so enjoyable. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to review this whole series!
Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet is the fourth book in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. I highly recommend reading the series in order, it is just much more fun that way. Trust me.
Sometimes being the grim reaper really is, well, grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple of months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above...or at least get dressed. It becomes clear something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. But the more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it. In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved.
Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet is exactly what I was hoping for as a follow up to book four, but still full of surprises. I like that while the heat and attraction between Reyes and CHarley is off the charts, they have not fallen into the trap of insta love and assumed partnership. Just like real relationship, they have to figure things out and deal with other issues. I found CHarley's investigation and dealing with her personal crises to be very well done, and how even when she is scattered and terrified Charley is still fighting to find the perfect come back or quip. I liked the amount of surprises and sub stories that tangled together. Some authors try to have this many storylines in a single book and it gets tangled and confusing, but Jones pulls it off beautifully. Anyone that has read this far in this series is likely to keep going, like myself, to see what befalls Charley next.
Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet is another highly entertaining book with enough heat and feels to keep me up well past my bedtime. Now on to book five!
Three Charley and Reyes are getting on my nerves stars.
Charley is recovering from her last traumatic experience and, in the process, has quite a few more. We are starting to see some new talents show up which is nice. I would really like to see a change in the 'lets see how much Charley can be beat up before she dies' theme in this series.
I am also hoping that the Reyes character starts to develop a little more. He is now <spoiler>the next door neighbor (I am looking forward to Cookie getting ahold of Charley's copy of his apartment key*HA*)</spoiler>. I know he is the 'son of satan' and all but can we tone down the tantrums please. Charley needs to put him in the corner again for a while.
I listened to this installment. I was not in love with the narrator. She does not pull of snark on the 'Charley level' in my opinion. Other than that she does ok.
I was able to snag all of these on NetGalley recently. All opinions are my own and not influenced by this at all.
Continues to be an amazing series. Darynda Jones is masterful at managing the balance of genres. It's completely addicting and keeps getting better and better.
We get to see a very different side to Charley in this book, it's been several months since she was tortured so physically she's fully recovered but emotionally not so much. She's avoiding all her friends and family, hasn't left her apartment in weeks and has a scary new addiction to the shopping channels that has wiped out pretty much all of her savings. Cookie and Gemma have both been doing their best to get through to her but she has a long way to go before she's back to her normal self.
She's not really interested in taking any PI work but a girl can't eat if she doesn't pay the bills so it's time to accept a new job. Her latest case involves a woman who is convinced someone is trying to kill her and is desperate for help and tracking down a would be murderer might just be enough to pull Charley out of the hole she's fallen into.
I've always liked Charley, I appreciate that she's usually so willing to put herself in danger to protect the people she cares about and I'm enjoying learning about her grim reaper abilities but it was really interesting to see a more vulnerable side to her in this book. She's had to deal with so much recently that it was bound to take a toll on her and it was hard to see her feeling so lost and alone. She has a great support system thanks to her best friend Cookie and I'm glad that she's starting to build a relationship with her sister now too. I'm still not happy with her dad though, he's done so much to hurt her that he's got a lot of making up to do before I'll forgive him.
Reyes is out of prison but he's keeping his distance and isn't exactly on speaking terms with Charley. Things are really complicated between them and we're only starting to uncover some of his secrets but I can't wait to dig a little deeper. He does do some very questionable things but he seems to have Charley's best interests at heart and he is doing his best to protect her. I love the interactions we get between the two of them and that we start seeing some depth to their relationship here, the attraction has been there from the beginning but Reyes has been hiding so much for such a long time that it's about time he started opening up a bit.
I'm really enjoying this series and looking forward to seeing what happens next.
This has become my favorite series.
Charley is recovering from the events of book 3 and suffering from PSTD, But that doesn't stop her from taking a case for a woman who believes someone is trying to kill her or demons from trying to track her down.
So the fourth book. Well it would not be Charley’s book, it there would not be something to solve and if there already is one case, then there will be some more, course who needs to sleep or eat or send back all that stuff that Charley has bought turning her two month retail therapy. But still the most important thing is, that Charley must face her closest “friend” at the moment – her PTSD. And then we will see, how the others will help Charley to help others and help herself.
This is the book, when she finally will get physical relationship with real flesh and blood Reyes, but still, they could not totally go without at least one trip to hospital. The story gets more hot and mote paranormal.
But this was the book, when I felt that the constant repetition of their joint history started to get on my nerves. Charley has the ADD, not the readers, by the book fourth I do not feel like I need the reminders any more, but at the same time I understand the need, since I, for example started to read the series from book nine and then the glimpses back to their past were helpful, but if you read from start to finish …
But still – good read and humorous entertainment!
I have been enjoying this series so far. I love the story and the author's writing style.
I can't wait to read more.
I highly recommend this.
Review:
Since I read all of the Charley Davidson in one long run, yes, I had not read any of the series yet, I decided to write one review for the previously released books and one for the last book in the series.
First let me say, these are wickedly awesome books! Loved the story line, the writing and the characters. For me it was great to read them all at once and a little sad, since there will not be anymore. One of the things I loved about the books was Charley and her balls to the wall, help whoever, whenever she can attitude. Now that sure got her in lots of trouble, but it was so much fun to read. I loved the snarky witty dialogue and the quotes at the beginning of each chapter cracked me up. Now, it is not all fun and games in this story, there were points when I was crying and points I was on the edge of my seat with the action going on. I have to say on the whole this is one of the best and most well-rounded series I have read where I was not once bored or wanting to put down a book.
I am not sure what this Author has coming next, but she has me on the hook for whatever it is.
5 Big Stars for all of the books in the series
*I voluntarily read reader copies of each book provided by the publisher for review.*
Where do I start? I keep saying this, but I want more.
Charley’s is depressed now and taking time off. That is until a woman needs her help. The woman thinks someone it trying to kill her. Charley now must get up, get dressed, and find out what is going on. The more Charley digs into the woman’s story the more it seems to be true.
Reyes is out of prison and staying away from Charley (remember that is what she wants). However, she is rethinking that now.
Albuquerque is being held hostage, Reyes maybe involved. So, Charley must investigate what is really going on.
Charley’s life is crazy again.
E-book/Urban Fantasy: This is the fourth book in the series of Charley Davidson. There are several things going on at once: Charley is depressed, Reyes is doing his best demon slaying, and people are missing. Charley’s whole posse from the other books are here with an addition. I liked the familiarity of the characters and that no one is too static. I love the first hand narrative where you really get to hear Charley’s voice and feelings, which can be self-serving and emo all that the same time. What I didn’t like was the whole bank robbers subplot. I really thought it was stupid on top of Charley having male attention like Anita Blake. (Anita started out slow too). All I kept think when the biker was kissing her was, “Yep, she’s going to be getting a new suitor every book”, but we’ll see.
All in all it is a really good series. I didn’t guess the Harper ending, but if Charley spent more time on it, maybe the reader would. I want to thank NetGalley for letting me have the series in lieu of an honest review.
This is the fourth book the series. I have to say that Ms. Jones weaves her tale so that not only are you given a morsel, but your appetite and thirst to know more keeps getting teased. Charley and her gang are back. While Charley has withdrawn and immersed herself and sorrows with purchases from the home shopping network, she is hired by a woman who says that someone has been trying to kill her. As Charley tries to find out who is messing with her client, the demons are actively pursuing her while she's trying to fight her inner demons. As Charley finds out who is there to help her and who is there to steer her awry, she will have to fight her personal and actual demons in order to survive.
I highly enjoy this series. Every time I think that I know what will happen, Ms. Jones proves me wrong. I highly recommend this book and series to those 18+ due to the violence and sexual scenes. Thank you Ms. Jones and NetGalley for letting me read and enjoy your books. I look forward to finding out what happens next.
It has been so long since a character has captured my complete attention in a series that I have to get into the next one as soon as the page from the last one is turned. This was hard too since I needed to read and review others too. Those t shirts too are such to give more than a chuckle. The steam also rises from the pages and burns the fingers. Another case has her attention but that is only a fraction as usual. Sucking this one in fast from start to finish I think I did it faster than they did.
What does a Grim Reaper do when she is down in the dumps and depressed? Watches infomercials and buys herself happiness to fill the hole, of course. Charley is having a hard time after the incident that happened on The Spot. She now fills it with mail order packages. During her slump she also gets to see exactly who really cares about her well-being by how much they all try to help her. I loved seeing the relationship with her sister, considering how her father has treated her and the things he has done. She needs family. I also loved how Cookie won't budge when Charley tries to push her away for various reasons. Friends are essential, too.
During all of this we get a little deeper into Charley and her emotions. We also get to learn more of Charley's supernatural abilities. Plus there's the trademark laughs and giggles sprinkled liberally throughout the story. Another winner!
Thank you to Net Galley for the e-book copy to read and review. I love this series.
Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet
By Darynda Jones
4 stars.
Darynda Jones new fiction series combining action, supernatural and romance. Featuring Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper. Charley sees dead people, and it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice.
In Darynda Jones's Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet, sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.
In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.
While not my usual genre, I found the books engaging and face paced to keep me picking up title after title.

I have read these books over and over and over, and everytime I read them I fall more in love with it. The only thing that frustrates me is the waiting in between and for the ultimate fight, other than that and is like an addiction.
I am too sad to see this series over, but something tells me this will not be the end at all.
If you haven't read this series, start now, it is just amazing!
Thank you for the early copy.
I recommend this fourth novel to fans of urban fantasy. I always enjoy following this fun/strong main character throughout her adventures.
Charley is as irrepressible as ever, but more than a little depressive too in the fourth book of this series. This could be a major downer, but she has her oddities to make moments funny and it also helps make her a more relatable character. She's been through many things, but her encounter with Reyes' human father at the conclusion of the third book has left her in a funk and more than a little jumpy - which is way past what it would take for most people. Charley can only hide for so long in her apartment though, and a job and multiple run-ins with demons out to get her keeps her busy. Not too busy to not be getting hot and heavy with Reyes … and some of her biker friends though. The book is zany and fun as usual, but is a little light on Uncle Ubie and Garrett Swopes and that would be my only downside.
Fourth book in this series, read the previous ones first this story arc keeps building. Building for sure, the stories still have a lot of humor, Charlie is a smart mouth definitely, but the stories themselves are getting deeper and darker. It's now two months later after the last book and Charlie is adjusting to her torture from the previous book, she has to make herself get up to move and its not an easy thing for her to do anything especially not to go outside of her apartment. There are many adventures for her in this edition, return of characters we've met before, righting of wrongs for many characters. It is a satisfying edition with a few twists and turns thrown in.
