This is a cute collection of tidbits detailing some of the odd things that you probably didn't know about animals. It is presented in a very easy to follow format for both middle grade readers and beyond. Young readers will learn a lot about animals that they didn't know before because of the fun and humorous way that the information is presented.
My kids loved looking through this book! The title immediately caught their attention, of course. I found the pages a bit too busy, however. There was so much going on I found it somewhat difficult to follow.
Kids are drawn to anything that is a bit "gross". This book is full of interesting information that will hold their interets.
A fun read for the kids who are always curious about science and have lots of questions. I really liked that the questions were related and eventually formed a circle of questions.
What a title!! Catches your eye which leads to digging a little deeper. The information in this book will definitely answer some of those curious, strange, odd, peculiar and sometimes wacky questions that pop into one's head. This book is a "must add" to your classroom shelf! This will make a great gift - adding this to my shopping list now! Thank you NetGalley for an advance reader's copy in exchange for an honest review!
What Breathes Through Its Butt?: Mind-Blowing Science Questions Answered, written by Emily Grossman and illustrated by Alice Bowsher, is currently scheduled for release on November 10 2020. Why is your elbow called your funny bone? How could you escape the grip of a crocodile’s jaw? Which animal can breathe through its butt? This book uncovers the amazing scientific explanations behind all sorts of questions that can pop into our heads. Can an egg bounce? How can a giraffe’s ridiculously long neck contain the same number of bones as a human’s? How much does the Internet weigh? With delightful interactive features that invite readers to guess answers to questions and make links between different scientific concepts.
What Breathes Through Its Butt? is a book that answers a number of the wacky and interesting questions that wee might never have thought to ask. Some of the information was very interesting and I learned a bit about things I never thought to wonder about. I found that the writing and illustrations were well paired, and aimed at readers that like silly or gross humor, and those with fairly short attention spans. I think this might be a great book for getting reluctant readers to read, and maybe reread. I feel like the author and illustrator worked well together on this book and the final product will certainly interest and entertain a number of young readers- and I can picture it being a regular check out in an elementary school library. For my tastes it just catered a little too much to the goofy and not quite as much on the encouraging further research as I would have liked.
Thank you to the publisher for an advance copy of this book! It was read with my six year old.
This book is so great! She loved the questions, then the different explanations before the answer were given! It was a great way to teach science! She also loved that Dr. Emily loves science and is a girl! Highly recommended for curious little minds!
The title of this book is enough to convince any child to pick it up. The premise will make them stay and read through until the end! The question and answer format prompts readers to take a guess at which answer it will be and then follows through with an interesting and engaging explanation as to why the answer is true. Instead of being unrelated question after unrelated question, each question has a passage that leads into the next so that it feels like a natural flow of someone's actual stream of consciousness and wonderings. Both the questions and answers are intriguing. The scientific explanations are done so in a way that is far from dry. I'm really glad I picked up this book on a Saturday morning. I caught myself yelling did you know... to the other member of my household often. A sure sign that this informational text is full of fun facts.
My students will love this book. I mean, it's about animals and butts! I don't know what it is about this combination that makes every kid, even the most reluctant readers pick it up. Without a doubt, I will be purchasing this book for my classroom. I also know that kids will be reading it like crazy!
This book was received as an ARC from Bloomsbury USA Children's Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book was so cleverly written that a lot of known facts came to light after 30 years later. I have learned so many new fun facts in this book than I did in the classroom therefore, I believe that our school district should add this book to the curriculum because not only will the children learn so many fun educational facts but they'll have fun doing it and enjoy themselves. I know our community will enjoy this book very much and hopefully we will convince our schools to add it to the curriculum.
We will consider adding this title to our Q collection in our JNon-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
I received an electronic ARC from Bloomsbury USA Children's Books through NetGalley.
Grossman offers readers the chance to answer some difficult science questions and have fun while doing so. Each section begins with a question and four multiple-choice answers. Readers are encouraged to make their best guess and then read the information to find the real answer. Her writing style is easy to read and will pull middle grade readers in to learn while having fun. The graphics are interesting and connected to the text. I'm impressed by how much science she slips in along with looking at the various answer options in each chapter. Grossman offers a hint that another volume is coming so watch for that one too.
And, yes, there really is an animal that breathes through its butt.
Looking forward to having this one on our library shelf.
This book is a ton of fun! Not only is it loaded with some crazy facts it is super interactive. This book is perfect for young readers who often ask the "whys" and "hows" about everything. The author writes in a playful manner that will keep kids interested. Its a great book for having some fun while you learn!

My boys loved this book the instant they read the title! We have enjoyed incorporating it into our daily science time for homeschool!
This is such a fun book of facts, and I love that you can make your prediction first and then read all about why each answer is or is not correct. My sons and I had so much fun reading through this, and I know that my students will love it as well!
This was a cute, fun read from a teacher perspective because students are always curious and this gave me some great answers for them.
The one thing I did not like about this book is that no matter which platform I used, the book showed sideways and it was a little frustrating to read.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Kids love the books with all the gross facts and this is no different and it's right in the title.
I didn't get to read the whole thing as the formatting to Kindle split every page into several pieces making it very difficult to read.
What I did see was informative and enjoyable with just enough detail to pique a reader's curiosity. The illustrations were funny and matched the overall tone of the book.
What Breathes Through It’s Butt’s title alone begs any child to read it. I read it to my kids at night and they really enjoyed the questions as well as answers that were provided. Usually it starts with a question, why is the funny bone called the funny bone, then there are multiple choice answers and the kids can guess what the answer is, after it goes into detail about the answer to the question. I enjoyed this book because it also had funny pictures that my kids loved that made the information memorable. It also made science fun and engaging.
