Boy oh boy, does Rosemary Keevil know grief and addiction! In her memoir “The Art of Losing It,” she is unflinchingly honest about her experiences on both topics. Not only did Rosemary experience two deaths in the same year (her husband to cancer and her brother to AIDS), but her life continues to unravel due to her battle with alcoholism.

As readers, we are in the thick of Rosemary’s pain, and it gets incredibly uncomfortable. But it’s easy to root for her. And gratefully she finds the strength and courage to turn her life around. I highly recommend this “quit lit” to those in and out of recovery.

Special thanks to She Writes Press and NetGalley for an electronic copy of “The Art of Losing It” in exchange for my review.

I found this book insightful towards illness and dying. I feel weird reviewing someone’s personal story, but the writing really drew me in. I wanted to keep knowing more and how her and her family were doing,

The first part of "The Art of Losing It" tells the story of the worst year of Rosemary Keevil's life; and the second part takes place ten years later as she's still struggling to recover.

The first part is both beautiful and heartbreaking. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to live that situation; and I think Keevil should be commended for her honesty and bravery.

Unfortunately, the second part wasn't as good. We don't really get to understand how things spiralled for Rosemary in the time since her husband's death; and her recovery just suddenly somehow happens.

Despite this, I did enjoy this read. Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for the chance to read this one!
