Just lovely! An emotional and fulfilling road trip to Greece
Some Like it Greek is a lovely story of two women forging an enduring friendship during a road trip from England to Greece.
Anna, 31yo, had just lost her father and been cheated by her never-do-well boyfriend. While boxing her father things, she finds some pictures of a road trip he made to Greece when he was young and is enchanted by the place and the experience.
When the bank she works for offered voluntary redundancies, Anna decided to take the money and go on a little adventure.
She needed a companion, and who better than her neighbor and family friend Demetria? Demetria, 69, had moved to England decades ago and never been back to her home country.
The story is simply lovely. Anna and Demetria's friendship is beautifully deepened by their shared experiences. There are some emotional moments, some fun bantering, and the challenge of accepting a friend as they come. Sometimes grumpy, sometimes needing the restroom every few miles.
The road trip is a treat of its own, especially in times of COVID-19. The author describes the many places they pass through in an immersive way, without overdoing it.
There is a lot of food and scents. I confess I felt quite hungry throughout the reading. If you are going to read it in the park or on the beach, bring a snack!
The cherry of the cake is a little summer romance with an adorable, yet elusive, Irishman.
Some Like it Greek is the perfect summer read! Highly recommended!

Some Like It Greek is a super cute summer read! This story follows Anna who is 31 from Manchester and has just left her job with some savings in her pocket. Anna decides to take the road trip to Greece that her father was going to take before he suddenly died. Anna travels with her 70 year old Greek neighbour Demi who hasn’t been back to Greece in 50 years.
Anna and Demi’s friendship is amazing and it was so lovely to read about an older character that was healthy and still vibrant. Actually, all of the relationships ( that being family relationships, friendships or romantic relationships) in this book were really positive.
I loved the road trip aspect of this book and the descriptions of France, Italy and Greece. It was really fun to read a book about travelling during this time where travelling is not an option for most people. The food descriptions had me hungry all the time and wishing we had a Greek restaurant in my town! I will definitely e recommending this book to friends and looking for more Sue Roberts novels.
Really enjoyed this book! I have a camper van and would love to be adventurous enough to travel to Greece in it! Anna following a relationship breakdown and the death of her father decides to go on a road trip in his beloved camper van, taking her dads friend Demi with her!The descriptions of the countryside, France Switzerland and Italy as Anna and Demi travel through on the way to Greece instantly transports you there, So nice in this time of lockdown, one could live vicariously through their travels!the descriptions of the Greek food are so tantalising and mouth watering! Anna and Demi both have different reasons to do the journey and in doing so open themselves up to new experiences, their hearts to love and the realisation that tomorrow is not a given so one should live for the moment!
Thank you net galley for this early read.
Although not a romantic comedy, this is a light-hearted, feel-good novel with a deep emotional core around the themes of parents and family.
I did struggle with the first person, present tense style and some of the plot twists on Kefalonia/Cephalonia stretch belief. I know the island well and did not feel anchored with the description of popular locations.
If you love stories of re-invention and recovery in the Mediterranean this is an ideal summer read.
Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Another great book from Sue Roberts.
Anna recently lost her dad and is sorting through his house when she comes across pictures and a map of Greece. She decides to travel to Greece with her dads next door neighbour Demi who came to England From Greece many years before.
They travel across France, the Swiss alps and Italy before arrive Greece.
Demi spends time with her relatives whilst Anna finds herself and decides what to do with her future.
This was a quick, fun read through Europe. Anna and Demi were likeable and relatable characters from the outset, and I particularly enjoyed Demi’s development throughout the story. It was a lovely self-exploration story on so many levels and I loved the focus on the women themselves rather than the things that were going on around them. Because of this, I feel that the book would have been better positioned away from the rom-com genre. The romance element of the story, while charming, felt out of place and a little rushed in the context of the wider plot.
The detail of the scenery that Anna and Demi got to see on their travels was beautiful and seemed (from my limited experience of Kefalonia) well researched. At times the focus on building a beautiful picture in the reader’s mind felt like it detracted from what was happening to the characters at that particular moment, and served to make the writing feel a little jagged at times.
It was a pleasant enough experience, but it wasn’t the most engaging read I’ve had lately.
I definitely like it Greek! Having visited the beautiful Santorini Island of Greece and having absolutely been awestruck by the beauty I blindly picked this book up. Being a fan of chick lit I found this book to be a satisfying reading experience.
The protagonist, Anna is in a terrible mental state due to a turn of disastrous and tragic events in a row. She has lost her father, and found out that her boyfriend is more of a cheater. A serendipity encounter with a beautiful beach postcard gives rise to an impromptu roadtrip to the island of Greece.
They travel from England through the Swiss Alps through France, Bologna, Italy and finally to Greece. I loved this roadtrip angle filled with the fun adventures and friendship between Demi and Anna. Unfortunately, being stuck at home and not being able to travel due to Covid-19, this book helped me live and experience roadtrips and travel vicariously with Anna and Demi.
Also, the whole Anna finding herself angle really made me relate and enjoy the journey of reading this book even more.
3/5

This book was fabulous! A brilliant summery read. I already love Greece and reading this made me yearn to be back there, the food, the beaches, the people....
a really feel good story that I’d definitely recommend
This book makes me want to go to Greece! The food, the scenery and the atmosphere sounds soooooo amazing. If you're looking to "go on a trip" without actually travelling, this book is for you!
This book was enjoyable and it was an easy beach read. I loved the adventure and the characters. I felt that it moved at an odd pace and things got resolved so fast I was waiting for more to come from them.
I enjoyed reading Some Like it Greek and getting to know the characters; they felt like old friends. It was fun to travel along with Anna and Demi and enjoy their adventures and family history and stories. For a couple of hours, I was transported to many wonderful locations that sound beautiful and rich with history and experiences. Anna finds information that her father may have been planning to return to Greece, where he visited and worked as a young man. She decides to take a road trip, travel to the same places her father went, and spread his ashes after his recent death. I love the line in the book when one character asks, "What's the occasion?" and the answer is, "Life is the occasion. Live it."
Anna and her friend Demi travel from England through the Swiss Alps into France, then Bologna, Italy and into Greece.
Unlike the book and Anna finally saying that nothing feels uncertain to her anymore, that is my problem, everything is feeling uncertain for me. That is why I love to read so much; for a brief amount of time, I can transport myself into the books' lives and destinations and escape. I will check out other books by Sue Roberts as I enjoyed her writing style and storytelling.

When I first grabbed this book I was expecting a little summer rom-com, which was just what I had needed. I was slightly saddened to find that this was a bit more of chick-lit with the main character Anna finding herself while one a European road trip. With that said, this is the kind of book that you’d want to take with you to the beach, one that doesn’t require a lot of brain power to read and nothing too heavy.
This story had a lot of secondary characters with storylines of their own, causing them all to fall kind of flat and lacking detail or depth. In general, there was a lot of extra fluff and repetitiveness which left the storyline lacking more often than not. Oddly enough, I found that there was an unnecessary amount of detail but into the food that Anna ate, the passage of time was marked but what she ate each day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While I enjoyed the author describing some of the Greek dishes that she ate, I didn’t need to know what she had for breakfast each and every morning.
Overall, this was an okay summer read if you want something mindless and without too much depth.
This was beautiful summer read and such a lovely heartwarming story of love and friendship and how sometimes you just need to take the only be and take a risk to do something different as a whole new world awaits. A particular quote worthy of note that resonates throughout the book is that time is promised to no one by which really made me think and is indeed very true. The characters were relatable and engaging I have A mental image of demi in my head as an excentric old lady. This book was my first by this author and has. Certainly left me wanting to read more and has also left me wanting to visit Greece particularly Kefalonia.
It was my first time reading a Sue Roberts Book and I am pretty excited to rant about it. I pretty much enjoyed reading about Anna and Demi. I would never quit a job 😂 given a choice tho and take a trip to a Greek Island because I am a coward. I am in awe of her bravery and Demi was all so funny and she had curls. I enjoyed this book and particularly watching Anna embracing herself, falling in love and finding herself . This book was written so well and in case you are wondering when all is well I am eating myself to go on a trip.I so want to travel now because of Anna and Demi and I recommend this book to everyone. A huge thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my ARC
The problem with describing a book as ‘completely laugh out loud’ is that you feel so disappointed when your most extreme reaction is a slight smile. I really enjoy romantic comedies and have read many books which are funny, this book, unfortunately, is not. I feel that describing it as light hearted would have been more accurate.
So after a negative start to my review, I will say that I quite enjoyed Some Like it Greek. It follows the story of Anna and Demi. They take a road trip to Greece to retrace a journey that Anna’s father had taken in his youth. Demi is from Greece and agrees to accompany Anna to visit family.
The story is pretty slow, there is so much description of the towns and villages Anna and Demi see on their journey and the food eaten, that it felt more of a travel guide than a romantic comedy. There was little romance compared to other books in this field. However, the story flowed and had a nice, albeit very predictable, ending. I’m never negative about predictable endings as it’s the HEA that most of us enjoy in the romance genre.
In all, this was a nice story.

The author takes us on a road trip. We travel from the UK to France, Italy to finally arrive at our destination : Greece.
We learn a bit about history on our drive and it might be interesting to take a notebook and write down some (or all) of the tips that are worth a visit if you like those countries.
It was nice to see how Anna developed, learned to put herself first and as the author pointed out: no one is certain that there will be a tomorrow. So grab every chance you get to achieve your dreams and happiness.
And then there is Demi: a very fit and spritely septuagenarian who is full of life. What will this trip have in store for her...?
A great story that put a smile on my face and warmed my heart. It felt so real that is was as if I traveled with them. 5 stars.
Thank you, Sue Roberts and Bookouture.
A laugh out loud book, so chilled definitely a holiday book. Loved it was based in Greece felt the warmth as if you where actually in the book
I really wanted to love this book--it had an adorable cover, took place in Greece (where my parents used to live, and I've visited) and was premised on a young protagonist and quirky older neighbor roadtripping together. So much potential! But ultimately, so little happened in this book I hardly have anything to talk about. What did happened was presented in such a way that made it utterly boring. Anna decides to take a road trip from England to Greece with her 70-year-old neighbor to scatter her dad's ashes in the place he loved vising as a young man. While on this journey, Anna meets a handsome traveler and her neighbor reconnects with family. There are no moments of excitement, intrigue, or romance in this book. The budding romance between Anna and the traveler (Dana) feels so forced, or at least unexplained, you wonder why they're together at all, or, I guess, why it's more than a vacation fling. Nothing in the novel makes me believe these two are destined for each other. I also find it incredibly implausible that Anna would go from a well-to-do corporate job to becoming a hairdresser. Not because that's a bad career choice, but because it requires numerous steps of additional schooling, licensure, and training before she can make the transition. It would have made much more sense for her to pick up something with less transition steps, even within the creative field, like painting or photography. Everything else is incredibly predictable, presented either in long descriptive paragraphs that read more like a travel guide than a novel or incredibly stilted dialogue that feels too formal for actual speech. I would say the novel could benefit from MORE dialogue, instead of so much time of Anna by herself or alone with her thoughts , but I'm not sure that would make a difference. The book is also entirely lacking in humor. Sure, there are moments of amusement (like the 70-yo beating up some thieves), but nothing is really FUNNY in a way that makes me want to laugh. This book is entirely forgettable, but at least it was a quick read.
Some Like It Greek is Sue Roberts latest book and I found it impossible to put down. It follows Anna, her father has recently passed away and to honour his memory she decides to drive his camper van from Manchester to Kefalonia. Tagging along for the ride is her dad’s no nonsense sixty nine year old neighbour Demi, originally from Kefalonia. What ensues is a great tale as they travel through France. Switzerland and Italy before finally arriving in Greece. It’s a fun filled tale featuring family, secrets and love interests, plus a very healthy helping of gorgeously described Greek food and beautiful vistas. I can highly recommend this book. Thank to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
