The Ravens by Kass Morgan is a thrilling YA novel that explores the dark side of sorority life and witchcraft. The story follows Vivi and Scarlett, two new members of Kappa Rho Nu, a prestigious and secretive sorority that hides a coven of powerful witches. Vivi is a newcomer to Westerly College and to magic, while Scarlett is a legacy Raven and the daughter of the current president. As they navigate the challenges of initiation, friendship, romance and rivalry, they also discover that their sorority has a history of bloodshed and betrayal that threatens to destroy them all.
Morgan creates a captivating and immersive world of magic and mystery, where nothing is as it seems and everyone has a secret. The characters are well-developed and complex, each with their own motivations and flaws. Vivi is a relatable and sympathetic protagonist, who struggles to fit in and find her place in the sorority and in the world of magic. Scarlett is a more ambiguous and intriguing character, who has to balance her ambition, loyalty and conscience. The plot is fast-paced and full of twists and turns, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat until the end.
The Ravens is a spellbinding and suspenseful read that will appeal to fans of The Secret Circle, The Craft and Pretty Little Liars. It is a novel that explores the themes of identity, power, friendship and loyalty, as well as the consequences of secrets and lies. It is also a novel that celebrates the bond between sisters, both by blood and by choice.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t get into this book once I picked it up. I do think it’s a me problem as I know others have loved it.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me a free advanced copy of this book to read and review.
I loved this story. I kept going back and forth about who was behind everything and was actually surprised at the end.
The cover of The Ravens is oddly stunning and certainly drew my interest. The authors, Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige, did a great job with this book, which felt like a mash-up of fantasy and dark academia. This book was featured by Once Upon a Book Club, and I can see why they chose it. I look forward to checking the sequel, The Monarchs, in the near future.
I absolutely devoured the 100 series way back when so I was very excited to see something new from these authors. I really enjoyed the characters and the setting was perfect. The plot progresses well and I really enjoyed everything about this novel. I’m excited to pick up book 2. Thank you netgalley for my free copy!
This was a fun, spooky, witchy read and I really enjoyed it! I think this would be a perfect read for around the Fall and Halloween season. Definitely, a re-read around that time is in order!
I could not put this book down. Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige worked magic with this book as powerful as the witches they wrote about. I swear I gave myself a headache from reading too late into the night and refusing to put the book down.
Honestly? I loved the idea of this book. And while it didn’t meet my incredibly high expectations, it did a pretty good job of coming close! The plot was a lot of fun, the characters were pretty good (some side characters felt like LGBTQ fodder, but I won’t touch on that here), and the whole witch atmosphere was a lot of fun. The one thing I took issue with were the romances. I didn’t need romance in this book, so I certainly didn’t need TWO romances. Mason, a senior, being so entranced by a freshman during her first week, that he needs to flirt with her while in a relationship? Super annoying and made me immediately hate the idea of them getting together.
BUT other than the romances, I really enjoyed and highly recommend for anyone looking for a fun, quick, witchy, YA read.
The Ravens is magic meets sorority drama and I loved it all, but Most of all I loved the sisterhood in this book. It was a slow burn, but well worth it!
Thank you Netgalley for my copy of this book!
I truly enjoyed this story. I always love when authors team up to write novels. When done successfully the two voices are distinct but totally in sync. Morgan and Paige are definitely killing it. I found the premise of a witchy sorority interesting, the sisterhood well written, and I truly enjoyed that there was romance but it was like level 4 plot point. Overall I was hooked enough to get the arc for the second novel!!
As I’ve been reading a ton of witch book’s lately I’ve got to say this one didn’t compare to any I’ve read recently. It was soooo boring. The witchy stuff didn’t really start until halfway through for me and it had already lost my interest by then. Ended up skimming the rest of the way through
This book tells the story of a sisterhood that is both a sorority and a coven of witches. When a new girl comes to campus she finds out she is a witch and enters a dangerous world full of secrets. I enjoyed reading this story and thought it was original and wonderfully Gothic.
This was an interesting read about 2 distinct girls with the same legacy of power and how they interact with each other while one is pledging a sorority which is actually a coven for witches. Scarlett Winters has always known she was a witch and this year she is lobbying to be president of the sorority next year and Vivi Deveraux is an incoming freshman who doesn’t know she is a witch and stumbles into pledging for the sorority as a way to fit in when she hasn’t fit in her whole life. I really like the concept of the coven and their power and how they have to hide who they are from everyone except for their sisters and that they have to work together to figure out who is after the coven when Scarlett and another sister are hiding a dark secret that could ruin everything. This was a good read and everything gets resolved at the end. Scarlett and Vivi finally work out their issues with each other and become good friends.
Thanks to Clarion Books and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.
I was really looking forward to this book, but alas it was a disappointment. Mainly because it was entirely too boring and predictable. I really slogged my way through this one, and that hurts me because there is almost nothing more I like than YA witch books. It didn't help that the actual witchery didn't start until at least half way through the book, and by then it was too late. Such a shame.
Fun, fun, fun! This book asks what is the true meaning of sisterhood and what it means to be a sister.
This book was very atmospheric and such an enjoyable read. The whole Southern college, sorority that is really a coven of witches, vibe was fantastic! Great pacing and writing from Danielle Paige and Kass Morgan.
It was great meeting all the girls in the sorority. I really liked the world building. I love the character developmental of Vivi and Scarlett.
Their transformations were realistic and intriguing.
I hope we get another book or two to get to know the Kappas.
The Ravens was a fun, witchy story. It is set at Westerly, a southern college, following Viví and Scarlett. They’re part of a sorority, Kappa Rho Nu, which also happens to be a coven of witches. It was a story that really focused on the importance of sisterhood and found family. I really enjoyed watching our main characters grown and change. All in all, I thought the story wrapped up very well and could be read as a stand-alone.
The Ravens by Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige is a young adult paranormal fantasy that is the first book in a new series by the same name. The story is mainly told from the dual point of view of two of the sorority sisters of Kappa Rho Nu which is not your normal sorority.
Scarlett Winters is a legacy in the elite Kappa Rho Nu at Westerly College. Scarlett expects that this year as a Raven she will become the Sorority President as those in her family before her and plans to let nothing stand in her way.
Vivi Deveraux is a freshman at Westerly College and new to the whole college experience. Vivi never expected anyone at the most exclusive sorority on campus to take notice of her so she is shocked when she receives an invite to pledge. What Vivi also doesn’t expect is to find that the sorority is actually made up of witches and she herself has powers.
When I saw The Ravens I couldn’t help but get excited to read this series as I’ve been a fan of Kass Morgan for a while and have always wanted to make time to read Danielle Paige so now I could read both. Honestly though I couldn’t tell that this series actually had two authors while reading as it seemed to all flow well together. The story moved along at a great pace and the characters were all likable enough. My one niggle would really be was it really all that new and creative? It was a solid read but reminded me of other witchy type of young adult I’ve read in the past with the standard young adult tropes but I’ll definitely be back for book two to see where the story heads next.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
This book didn't really work for me but that is just because I didn't like the writing as an adult. It will appeal to teens though because of The 100 series and this author will likely be popular as long as the show is watched. It did show her improving as a writer though.
3.5
I like the characters and the story was interesting, but took a little bit to get the story going. An overall fun read.
Thanks for NetGalley for giving me a copy in exchange for my honest review.
