I finally just got to this book, after requesting many, many months ago. I honestly didn't even remember what it was about when I started it. I'm so glad I read this though. It was a great escape and a fun read.
I don't often read a lot of fantasy, but this one was wonderful. It kind of reminded me of a mix of American Royals and Ninth House. Some magic, dark academia, and royalty-esqu sorority girls.
The romance seemed a little unnecessary, in my opinion and I don't really understand the significance of this taking place in the south, but other than that, I would recommend this one.
I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK. You cannot tell that this was written by two authors. The writing seamlessly blends together into one amazing, delicious, and addicting experience. The character development was phenomenal. I felt as if I knew the Scarlett and Vivi personally. The plot was well written, twisty, and it kept me guessing. I couldn’t put it down.
A must read.
*** not a book that I would have in my classroom due to language.
Magically mix of Greek sorority life with sisterhood. Told in two alternating POVs, this story takes place at the ultra-exclusive Kappa Rho Nu on Westerly College's Savannah, Georgia, campus. The sisters are called 'The Ravens'. The difference though is these sorority sisters are witches. The authors do a great job showing two very different sorority sisters. Scarlett Winter, the daughter of a former Raven's president. She's confident, sassy, and used to getting what she wants. Vivi Devereaux has no idea of her witch abilities. She's lived on the run with her mother. To her being a part of the exclusive sorority is everything she's been craving. Needless to say, when they both meet, Scarlett's not a big fan.
There's magical spells that aren't too complicated. ** These sisters can glamor themselves to look like someone right off a Paris fashion runway. This magic is a carefully guarded secret and if any of the sisters tell others of their abilities, not only are they kicked out of the sorority, but are spelled to forget.
In the sorority house, there are also deadly secrets. Secrets that involve the very magic that this sisterhood are known for. Fast-paced action and tension throughout. Especially when a truth is finally revealed. There's betrayals, mystery, and magic.
I liked the conflict Scarlett has when her boyfriend Mason shows interest in Vivi. I also liked how both Scarlett and Vivi's stories come together at the end.
Engaging witchy tale set on a Southern college sorority where some secrets involve deadly consequences.
I really enjoyed this book. Not a single character acted out of... realistic character, and it was clear that these are all still young people doing their best. If there had been a magical sorority at my college, I hope I’d have been a part of it!
Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review your titles.
I do appreciate it and continue to review books that I get the chance to read.
Thanks again!
This book wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. Not that I really knew what to expect. The idea of a sorority house being a front for a witch coven was interesting and sounded promising. But the plot didn't meet the my excitement I had for this book.
The sisterhood between the witches was definitely the theme throughout the book. I liked how they all supported each each other. I thought they were all pretty badass.
The let down for me was that the plot was pretty predictable which usually isnt a problem for me, but in this case it was just too predictable. The story itself wasnt bad though.
Thank you, NetGalley and HMH Books for Young Readers for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Kappa Rho Nu is the witches’s sorority — and at Westerly College, they’re the girls with all the power. Scarlett, who’s determined to follow her mother’s footsteps and be elected sorority president, is given new kid Vivi Devereaux as her sorority little sister. Vivi’s just discovering her witchy powers — and wondering why her mom has kept them a secret from her all these years — but she’s quickly caught up with the rest of the coven in an old curse that seems to be coming back to roost. And they’re going to need all of their combined powers to keep the past from murdering the coven members off in the present.
The witches in peril plot is solid entertainment, but Vivi and Scarlett — and the rest of the characters — are less well developed. A lot of the witches’ identities are summed up by their incredibly diverse ethnic backgrounds — which would be fascinating if those backgrounds played into anything beyond their physical descriptions and even more fascinating if the book considered how all these diverse “legacy” members managed to become part of the witchy Southern sorority in the first place. (And much of the tension between Vivi and Scarlett centers around a guy, which is super annoying when the guy in question is a privileged young man who’s been “totally changed” by an all-expenses-paid summer backpacking trip across Europe.)
It felt like there was tons of potential in The Ravens — I’d totally tune into a television series about a sorority of witches confronted by their sorority’s old sins! — but this book didn’t quite live up to its promise.
I loved this YA book and will be requesting we purchase it at my library. I have already recommended it to several patrons.
A southern sorority of witches set in Savannah, GA and told in two alternating POVs. This story was entertaining enough to hold my attention, but it felt like there was a missing ingredient to this recipe that should've been an all around five out of five read for me. Generally as a Black reader, it doesn't matter to me whether an author (or in this case authors) chooses to tackle race or not. However, it seems like a poor choice to sidestep the deep-rooted racist history of southern sororities especially when one main character is Black and the other is white. Yes, a sisterhood bound by blood and magic can transcend race and skin color, but it's still the South and it would've been such an intriguing thing to see how it's tackled.
3.5 stars out of 5 stars.
This book was well written and the story of secret societies and such really interested me. Read it in only a couple days!
A love for Kass Morgan's previous work got me into The Ravens and I was NOT disappointed! SUCH a creative, wild story. Will be purchasing for the library's YA collection.
I really enjoyed this one! Definitely for fans of The Craft and people who like deep worldbuilding! Morgan and Paige are obviously a great writing team.
The Craft Vibes
This story was richly engaging. Very well written. With great world building and character development. Super fast passed and easy to read. Definitely recommend it for anyone who was a fan of The Craft.
I ended up really enjoying this and burned through it in just a couple days. I like stories of university, secret societies, and magic so this was right up my alley. Some good twists and turns as well as some neat things done with magic, I'm already looking forward to the sequel. While I liked all the strong female friendships presented, none of the romances really did much for me so I was ok with them being on the sidelines for the most part. A fun, fast paced read that was just what I was in the mood for.
Such an interesting new read from two great authors! A little predicatble but enjoyable nontheless. Will recommend.
I knew I had to read this book as soon as I saw it, it’s about witches! I was not disappointed with this, it had the right amount of darkness and fun to it for a YA book- nothing too dark but not jokey either. I really really enjoyed this book! I can’t wait for the next one,
This book is everything I thought I needed and more. I adored the college setting, the character diversity, and the interwoven plot of witches, relationships, and the depiction of guilt. I cannot wait to read the second book, which I am so grateful for the arc from Netgalley. This review would not have happened if it wasn't for Netgalley.
I was so looking forward to this one and I'm happy to say that it lived up to my expectations! Overall, I felt like it had a very early-00s paranormal vibe that I really enjoyed. I loved the backdrop of a sorority at a southern college and can't wait to see what comes next for these sisters!
This was a fun, quick read---a sorority of witches made for a great read. I'm looking forward to the second book in this duology.
I absolutely LOVED this book. I’d recommend it to people who loved AHS: Coven. The audiobook is great as well. Thank you to Netgalley for letting me read this book in advance in exchange for an honest review.
