Pretty good but it took a while to get going Once it did, it was really good! Had an ending that I wasn't expecting.
Sam and Annie move so they can be closer to Sams mother. He finds an excellent office that he is able to design himself. They have a great, fun marriage. Then he starts acting weird. Then he doesn’t come home one night. Did he leave Annie? Is he the same person he was in HS?
I was grossed out by and annoyed with the characters within the first 10 minutes of listening. Not willing to give any more time to the story even if it turns out to be interesting. Raunchy and demeaning sex talk is not my thing.
Twists upon twists. I had trouble putting this one down because the story always had you going down the wrong path and the twist would come and shock you. This came close to being a 5 star read for me, but the ending fell apart a little. For as twisty as the rest of the book was, the ending lost that dramatic reveal.
Thank you to Netgalley for an audio ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
This audio version is narrated by four narrators. This thriller has the classic back and forth style of changing characters. There is a classic unreliable narrator that is well played and creates quite a twist. I found myself confused a few times, but I believe that is the intention of the author. The pacing of this audiobook is perfect and I found myself involved with the characters pretty quickly. This is highly recommended for readers of thriller and unreliable characters. I predict great success for this title.
I am genuinely a fan of this genre but this book just missed the mark for me. It was just strange and felt very underdeveloped and overwritten. I do see it being a popular book though and am sure many other people will enjoy it. It’s possible I felt this was because I didn’t enjoy the narration and reading it might have had a different outcome.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed that author's first book, so I was eager to check this one out. There were so many twists in this book, that it really kept you going well past bedtime. One of the twists was so big that I swore I missed something and had to go back and look to see if I misread. I didn't, it was just that big! I liked the characters and the plot. The writing was good. I did this in audiobook and enjoyed the narrators. I must say I liked her first book a bit better, but this one is definitely good as well.
First line: The door opens, and I look up as a man with ruddy cheeks and a crew cut walks into the restaurant, shaking rain from his baseball cap.
Summary: Newlyweds, Annie and Sam, have moved from New York City to Sam’s hometown to be closer to his ailing mother. He finds the perfect location for his psychiatric office in the extra room of an old house. Even though the owner seems to be a little strange he doesn’t let this bother him. Then one night after Sam leaves his office he goes missing. There is no sign of him. As Annie and the police look for Sam they discover thousands of dollars in credit card debt. Did Sam run away? Or is someone else behind his disappearance?
My Thoughts: Though I have never read Misery (but I plan to) I know the basic story line. This was very reminiscent of what I know of the story. Molloy fills her story with lots of twists and turns. Every few chapters something new is revealed. I really enjoyed how fast paced everything was. I would find myself trying to find time to listen to it whenever I could.
The one part of the audio book that I wasn’t too sold on was the voices. At the beginning I thought they did not find actors that fit the characters. And then as reveals happen it makes more sense. So it starts as misleading and then makes sense but also seems to hint at something to come. It helps and hinders the story.
FYI: Perfect for fans of Ruth Ware.
"Goodnight Beautiful" had a very twisty, unpredictable, edge-of-your-seat plot. Just when I thought I had some things figured out there was another turn to keep me guessing. Probably the only thing that I didn't like was that it heavily borrowed plot points from another well-know work of fiction (which I won't mention because of spoilers).
The multi-actor audio narration was excellent. At first, I wasn't sure why one of the narrators was chosen for the particular role, but later into the book, it made perfect sense and it fit perfectly with the plot.
