I think Dream Big will equally lead people to live full lives of incredible risk-taking and great reward AND will lead people to broken, impoverished lives of incredible mistakes and great consequences.
The one thing that Bob does best is motivate people by sharing his life with others. He is a spectacle to look at. He is a story. And that's what makes this book so enjoyable of a read. This book is a collection of Bob's adventures, his outlandish encounters rescuing girls from brothels in foreign countries, his instantaneous quitting of jobs, and his cutting of left pockets in all of his pants. The stories of others that he shares are always interesting but they don't always deeply connect to the point that is being made.
I do think loving Bob Goff and loving Dream Big go hand-in-hand. It is one of those rare occurrences where the pages of the book are so intricately linked to the author that there is no parsing the two. If you don't care for a person like Bob Goff, you're not going to enjoy his book.
Nevertheless, Dream Big is true, encouraging, and it serves its purpose in moving the reader towards discovering and pursuing their ambitions, and to not settle for anything less. Though, the end result might not be the same for all. Be forewarned.
This is my first Bob Goff book. I listened to the audio version, and then followed-up by reading the book.
Goff reads the book for the audio version – which I found to be a great treat. Goff has tremendous energy, as evidenced by his many adventures. His enthusiasm is contagious. His story-telling is best done first-hand. It’s a feel-good listen that leaves you in a better place. However, in drilling down to actual content that guides you towards realizing your ‘big dreams,’ I found this book lacking. In reality, Goff’s many stories serve to entertain and distract the reader. If you counted the words used to tell stories versus the words used to actually guide you, it might be 90% versus 10%. Honestly, I truly enjoyed the book. But I didn’t have any real take-aways about how to live my life differently in order to achieve my ‘big dreams.’
I do dream big! I often blog about dream projects at www.Patch405.com.
I received an advance digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
I loved Bob Goff's previous books. He writes with energy and passion and shares fun and inspiring stories. This book didn't grab me like his others, but I think that may simply be because it's hard for me to think about ambition while I'm furloughed from my job during a global pandemic. This would be a good book for me to revisit in the future.
What a great quarantine read! Now is the time to harness all of the energy spent THINKING about pursuing dreams and turn that into ACTIONS. Having read all of Bob Goff's other books, I loved exploring the idea of "Dreaming Big" through his lens on faith and humanity. This book is a combination of Goff's sweet story-telling and a call to action. Just as with his other books, I felt motivated to improve my life and dig deeper into my faith without it feeling like a typical cheesy how-to book. I always am left feeling like Bob is my encouraging buddy after reading a book of his, and this one is no different! 10/10 recommend! Thank you to NetGalley and Nelson Books for a copy of this book for an honest review.
I absolutely love Bob Goff. I love how personable he is and how he shares his experiences and stories to relate to the principle he's teaching. Although he references Christian beliefs, he never makes his books feel religious and only uses the references to drive his point home. No matter what he writes, everyone needs to read to gain some insight on the little things in life and how you can use positive principles in your everyday life.
Bob Goff always has a way of inspiring and encouraging others to let the love of God transform them and those around them. This book is no different. Having Bob narrate the audiobook really helps capture the nature of this book. I would have been disappointed had anyone else done it.
I really like Bob Goff, so I was excited to receive a copy of Dream Big from NetGalley in exchange for a review. But I genuinely felt like this book is not revolutionary when it comes to content. It gives practical advice, but it seemed like something I could either come up with on my own or something that I heard before.
I really do appreciate his narration for the audiobook and love his inclusion of personal anecdotes to support his advice, but the anecdotes weren't as heartwarming as the ones from his other books. The additions of bible verses seemed more like an afterthought rather than the goal of the story being built around the gospel.
I think if you love self help books and are looking for one that is Christian inspired, this would probably be a great book for you!! I enjoyed Goff's previous books and feel as though this one wasn't as interesting or as groundbreaking as the others. His writing style is very consistent between all of his books with I think is a strong suit of his as a writer!
Bob Goff is super encouraging and this audio book about dreaming big is al about that. He encourages you to think big, date to dream, be willing to take risks. His narration is very upbeat and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book!
I was able to review the audiobook Dream Big by Bob Goff for free from Netgalley and Nelson books for providing me with an advanced ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The audiobook was easy to listen to and soothing and the tone made it seem like I was having a conversation with a friend.
Bob weaves encouragement through his storytelling, and reminds us it's okay to fail along the way, and when we learn from our mistakes this is where we will find grace.
This is the book to make you feel great about yourself and achieving your dreams. If you are looking for a book to make you excited about life, this is the book you should get.
I had no idea who Bob was before I saw the cover and requested for it . The audiobook was easy to listen to and soothing , the tempo and tone made it seem like I was having a conversation with a friend . I am telling you after listening to this book it's hard not to think you can do anything . I liked that it seemed so relatable and there was no pressure to overthink what he was trying to say. A huge thanks to Thomas Nelson for my e-arc
Dream Big is a nonfiction book about finding and following your passion from a Christian perspective. Bob Goff tells anecdotes from his life to illustrate his points to give the reader action steps to move toward their ambition.
Bob Goff narrates the book and I loved that he did. Genuine excitement about his topic comes through in his voice. The pacing of the audio is well done.
I think I will buy a physical copy of Dream Big as I found myself wishing I could underline passages as I was listening.
Thank you to NetGalley and Nelson Books for providing an audio galley in exchange for an honest review.
Dream Big is a Christian nonfiction book on finding and reaching your dreams.
This is a book I will come back to time after time and see a new aspect each reread. Unfortunately there were chapters and stories that I couldn’t relate to at this point in my life. That made the stories a little less impactful than they can be to others.
Bob Goff narrates his own book. He is fantastic! His voice is very soothing. Also because he wrote the book, he knows exactly how he wanted everything to be said.
I look forward to rereading and annotating this book in the future!
I received this audiobook for review from netgalley.
I have heard so many great things about this book. This is my first book I've read by Bob Goff and possibly the first time I had heard of him.
At first, I felt like this book was a little disjointed and hard to follow, but then I started catching the key pieces of wisdom behind the chaos of the format.
My favorite topic from this book was limiting beliefs. I love how the author describes them as the drawer of keys that you don't even remember where they came from.
I also enjoyed the story about calling the President and how you have to know what you are going to say before you make the call and lose the opportunity with silence.
There were so many valuable tidbits. This book will definitely be re-read with a notebook handy to take down all the important ideas!
The final chapter and epilogue are the perfect summation for this book. I know what I need to whisper to my heart...."it's time for us to dream big"
I received a free copy of this audio book in exchange for my honest review from NetGalley and the publisher.
Woooow. This book was everything I needed in this current season.
Bob Goff has a crazy way of being the voice of reason in times when everything else is just white noise. This book challenged me, made me feel a little convicted, and encouraged me to ask some hard questions.
My husband listened to the audio book with me and he felt the same. There's just something so great about hearing Bob himself talk to you.
One part that really stuck out to me was his conversation about drastic changes for your dreams, like quitting your job! Whatttta guy.
Anyway, please read / listen to this. you won't regret it,
Bob Goff uses his unique ability to tell meaningful stories to encourage readers to not only accomplish their life dreams, but to get started on them. During time when so much is up in the air and uncertanity the word of the day, Goff provides encouragement. As if you were sitting on the front porch with a glass of lemonade, Goff's grandfatherly writing style is soothing and comforting. Goff is the narrator of the audibook, providing a richness to the before mentioned encouragement. If you need a dose of encouragement, Goff has it for you.
Wowsers. I think I bookmarked half of this audiobook. That's how good it was. So good that I both listened to the audiobook AND read the ebook. This guy has so much audacity, but not so much that he annoys me. (I'm look at you, Gary V.) No, Bob Goff has the kind of audacity that is contagious. The kind that makes you want to run after the biggest ambitions that you've had, make them happen, and reach for the stars...or further. Not in an unrealistic way. Actually, he does a fabulous job of laying out the realities of going after your ambitions. The failures. The setbacks. The climbing toward the big ones that seem outright impossible but layering some of the smaller ambitions out like stairs to climb up so that the big ambitions come within reach.
I have read a lot of book about dreaming big, visions boards, goal setting.....and I have enjoyed many of them. But this one just seems real. It seems so realistic and so relatable...even though he is an ex-lawyer who seems to have done just about everything there is to do. Still relatable.
That speaks to just how real this guy comes across. Just how conversationally he talks and writes. I have already started taking action on some of the many highlightable portions of this book. In fact, it's made me rethink so many of my ideas and ambitions that my head is bursting...but in fact, so is my heart.
Can you tell how much I loved this book?
No, okay....
Just kidding, I'm sure you can.
The thing is, I've read other Bob Goff books and just felt kind of meh about them. So much so that I almost didn't read this one. But I'm so glad that I did. And I have a sneaking suspicion that I will go back to it over and over again.
I will always read anything by Bob Goff. His joy is contagious and he embodies Jesus so well. I listened to the entire audiobook on my drive back to Texas today!
This book is centered around 3 questions to help you tackle your ambitions- who are you, where are you, and what do you want? Each chapter has a personal story of his to help get across his points. The stories are amazing, of course, there’s just nothing super groundbreaking that you’ve never heard before.
I think the thing that stuck with me the most is that he says not to worry about if your ambitions are religious enough, which I struggle with sometimes. His reasoning is that God created you with your specific passions for a reason, and he’ll use you regardless.
My biggest issue with this book was that I listened to it as an audiobook, and it switched narrators 3 times. It started out with Bob Goff himself reading it, and then switched to a very different voice, and then switched again. Bob Goff is just so enjoyable to listen to that I was bummed for the entirety of the parts that weren’t him reading.
Absolutely life changing. Bob Goff took the time to put things in perspective in ways I never would have thought of. Will definitely be a future hand sell for graduation gifts or a friend in need of direction. I think my favorite description he used in this book was when he compared us to a moon. In other’s eyes they see us on a planned trajectory. Then when we choose to change course they view us as a comet. Sometimes they say things that they don’t mean because they are still processing how we now factor into their lives. This audiobook will be on repeat until further notice in my house hold,
This is my first time listening to a book by this author. He makes great points that I wish would have been summarized at the end of the chapters in a more concise bulleted/ point form. One of the early points that gripped me was the analogy he made between having stuff that we can't make use of because it's all stored in a muddled pile somewhere (so that what we need is to take time to examine and organize valuable useful things in a way that we can access them) with the issues of our lives, which should be maximised for fruitfulness.
The storytelling style was a bit over the top and long-winded - and this is coming from a person who loves talking and hearing real-life stories. Sometimes I felt disoriented and unsure of what we were supposed to be talking about because the details and comedic tone distracted me and felt like the author was rambling. It was therefore easy to disengage. Perhaps if I was reading this book I might have more easily skimmed or pondered these parts. I was torn between giving this book a 4 or 5 stars. There are great life-enhancing and wise reminders here. I may not buy the book for myself but I would gift it to someone else. I would buy a summary of this book.
This is a great book! I enjoyed Goff reading it as well. I thought it was very well written and enjoyed the audio version of it. It was very motivating.
What a treat!
