I'm all for reading banned books, but this is the first time I've listened to one. The narrator throws herself into Twain's dialect with gusto, but it is a bit much to listen to. Also, it's just uncomfortable to hear a White woman (evidently) repeatedly drop the N-word, even if she is voicing a 19th-century adolescent who would indeed have used that word. But if you have no other way to check out Twain's contribution to the US canon, it's not a bad option.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for a digital ARC for the purpose of an unbiased review.
The truly wonderful narration brings this classic book to life. I loved listening to Huck's amusing superstitions and stories as he continues with his adventures alongside friend, and fellow runaway, Jim, having escaped the clutches of his cruel father. Clearly a story of its time, and reflecting the world as it was then, I absolutely recommend it. Thank you to Mark Twain and Robin Miles, Net Galley and Thomas Nelson for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A sincere thank you to the publisher, author and Netgalley for providing me with an ebook copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is not my usual genre, however I wanted to take the opportunity to read something from outside my norm. And I am glad I did!! Thank you for opening up my mind to something totally different. Characters were so well developed that I felt as though I knew them. I love when a book draws you into the story and it feels like you are living it with them.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a classic that I have never read but often heard about it. I was always curious about this title and wanted to read it, but never actually did.
I liked the narration and accents very much. There are difficult words for these days in this story, but you have to listen to it as a story that was not written today, but in times that these words sounded different than they do today. Interestingly, the narrator is a woman of color.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to listen to this! All opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.
I really enjoyed this audiobook and can’t believe I’ve never read Huckleberry Finn before! What a heartwarming story of an unlikely friendship between Huck and Jim. I loved listening to their bond grow and all the situations they found themselves in!
Throughout this there is an overuse of racist language that is of course largely deemed unacceptable in the current day. However, as pointed out by others this is occurs in a very specific historical context and the language and ideologies reflect that.
When I first started listening to this audiobook I struggled with the narration and thought I’d find it difficult to get into. I appreciate the accents were thoroughly researched and important to the storyline however it’s certainly not an audiobook you can listen to on increased speed! However I listened the whole way through, clearly got used to the narration and thoroughly enjoyed it!
It's a long time since I read the adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and I enjoyed listening to it.
The story is somewhat dated with words/references that are really not acceptable in today's world, yet as part of history they are acceptable.
I wasn't totally sure about the narrator, I think a male voice would have worked better for me but having siad that, I did enjoy it.
I loved this, it was absolutely beautiful and brought me right back to my childhood. While many of the references wouldn't be looked upon too glowingly in today's politically correct world, it reflects fantastically the time in which it was set. The narrator told the story excellently. I was captivated by that enchanting voice. I really loved it and will listen to it again in the future.

A classic novel brought to life by well read narration.
Highly recommended.
4.5 stars (for the audiobook version); 4 stars (for the book, itself)
I love getting old classics in audiobook format because it gives me a chance to experience them in a new way! It was a joy getting to revisit "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" after so many years. The narrator, Robin Miles, did a great job of bringing the characters to life - especially when it came to doing the accents. She truly brought a whole new energy to the story, which made it a much more entertaining listen than I was expecting!
Thank you to Thomas Nelson Publishers/Harper Collins Christian for giving me the chance to listen to this ARC audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a true classic and one that is described as a bit more complex than The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I read about Huck Finn and Jim many years ago and was delighted to revisit them through this audio recording. The narration is very good and brings this title to life. Listen to enjoy time with Huck either for the first or as a return to a well-known work.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first ARC in audiobook form with NetGalley, so I'm not sure if this is normal or it's just this one specifically but the recording has an echo. I love the NetGalley's apps! It allows you to change the speed up to 3x because I listen to my audiobooks at 2x speed or faster depending on the narrator. This one I could have put at 2.5x but when I did, the audio cuts a bit and there’s statics in the audio so I had to stick with 2x speed which is not bad!
I listened to this because it is history and supposed to be humorous. Huck Finn stages his own death in order to escape his father who keeps him locked at home. He comes across a runaway slave and they have many adventures.
Mostly I found the jokes repetitive and the characters were barely likable
Once I was lucky enough to be at a dinner party with Chuck Jones of animation fame. He was a very, very erudite person, and surprised me by saying he reread Huckleberry Finn every year, and that he always noticed something that had slipped his attention before. This year, it had been reading about the finding of the shipwreck with loads of debris, including one wooden leg. Huck comments that he and Jim looked for the other leg but couldn't find it.
Listening to this recording was my first "rereading" in decades, and I loved the book all over again. Robin Miles is one of the most respected narrators/readers in the vast field of audiobooks, and in this recording, she knocks it out of the park. Twain explains in the opening of the book that he deliberately used several specific dialectics and wrote them phonetically. Miles not only distinguishes between these dialectics even when "they" are in dialogue with each other, but she simultaneously gives each character a stunning reading. I don't know how she did it, but the King and the Duke speak as differently as chalk and cheese (if they were to speak); add all the aunts, uncles, children, teens, black and white people, entire families, sheriffs, escaped-slave hunters and on and on. This performance should be a major award winner.
This review is focused on the AUDIO BOOK only. The character of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is a timeless and beloved classic loved and already reviewed by a myriad of others. If you too, love this time honored classic, or want to experience it for the 1st time in Audio, then I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful edition.
I loved this AUDIO BOOK! The classical Huckleberry Finn comes to dramatic and energetic life with the narration of Robin Miles, I can not say enough about her narration! Her amazing command, and consistent rendition of the various dialects, are a such a pleasurable listening experience in bringing this story to vivid life!
Solid 5 Stars!
Warning: Some language (the N* word) referring to a person's race may be offensive.
My thanks to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson for providing me an advanced copy of this audio book in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions are my own.
This was a wonderful version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the narrator drew you into the story, and had you fully engaged.
I really enjoyed it, and would recommend this version to anyone.
I didn't finish this book. I only got through 24%. I didn't like the writing style and I didn't care about what was going on. Also, I don't care when the story was written, there was no need to have the "N" word written in every sentence. I don't really see the hype about this 'literary classic'.
I know I have read this book before but it was over 20 years ago and I have decided it is time to read it again but this time I decided to listen to this audiobook instead.
I very much enjoyed this story and I am so glad I have given this one a listen.
The narrator did a fantastic job.
The narrator did a brilliant job with this audio book, which increased my enjoyment of it. The different accents were handled really well. It was a fun experience.
Thanks a lot to the publisher and NG for granting this audio book.
This is a review of the audiobook, and not the classic novel, which has been read and reviewed millions of times already. This audiobook brings new life to it, however. . Robin Miles does a wonderful job handling the many dialects in this book, which pose a great level of difficulty. She handled this task with talent and professionalism. In fact, I think she does the best Huck Finn I've heard on an audiobook. I will definitely seek out her other work.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from Thomas Nelson and Netgalley. My review is voluntary.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain | review.
Genre: Classic.
Rating: Three Stars for the story… Five stars for the audiobook format!
Netgalley recently started their own audiobook program and I cannot be happier! I love audiobooks and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was my first listen. I’ve been reading a classic each month this year and this was a good July pick.
The audiobook was excellently done. Seriously, the narrator, Robin Miles, is super talented. I’m not sure I would have made it through this book in a physical format. Robin Miles did a great job bringing the different characters and their dialects to life.
As for the actual story, it was hard to take. Yes, a lot of it was political satire of the 1800s, but it was also hard to hear the n-word over and over. This book tells the story of a boy’s journey down the Mississippi on a raft after escaping his drunken father. He is soon joined by Jim, a run-away slave, and the two encounter a whole cast of strange characters. They get into lots of trouble and there is lots of lies and trickery.
All in all, the story was fine. As with many classics, I felt like it rambled on for a little too long.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of this audiobook in return for an honest review. #NetGalley #The AdventuresofHuckleberryFinn
