No one likes a dictator! What good is talking about equality (of talent) if you aren’t recognizing and celebrating it in your spheres of influence? A heavy-handed morality tale with an emphasis on social justice from one of the most beloved illustrators of the decade. My biggest concern is that the children are chanting “equality” without informing the reader as to what they mean by it.
Maya's Big Scene was even more than I expected. What starts out as Maya and other children practicing for a play that at first glance is just a caricature of what feminism is, turns into a lesson in equality, the leading message of feminism. With or without a follow-up discussion, Maya's Big Scene is a funny but meaningful story that will help children understand the basics of equality and community. (Also, the artwork is very charming!)
A funny and cute story about a little girl trying to get her play to be acted out exactly as she wants. Maya is a perfectionist and wants her play to be acted out exactly how she imagines it. Eventually she realizes that maybe it doesn't have to be perfect in order to be a great play. An overall sweet read filled with such lovely and quirky artwork!
This is a wonderful book. I read this book to my six-year-old niece and my four-year-old nephew and they both enjoyed it. I enjoyed it as well. It's rare to find a book that the kids really like, and that I enjoy reading too and this book definitely fit the bill. And the pictures are adorable.
