Ten years ago Hannah's husband was brutally murdered in their bed. Hannah was knocked unconscious while their 5 year old daughter lay sleeping in her bedroom. Hannah can not recall the details of what happened. Police investigators are sure Hannah has had something to do with it but then new evidence is found and a young man is accused and charged with Grahams murder.
Hannah has now moved on and is making a living as a psychologist. She is in a long term relationship with nice guy, Dan, and her daughter Evie is your typical teenage girl.
It seems that the true crime podcast Conviction has decided to re-open the case of Grahams murder. The legions of fans that tune in immediately take aim at Hannah making her life a living nightmare. As each episode airs Hannah slowly loses her grip on reality. Does she really not remember what happened? Or is it a convenient excuse that has allowed her to get away with murder?
This is such a difficult review to write. In the beginning I was really confused with the story line and I almost set this aside but I persevered and found myself getting invested in the story. I needed to know what happened to Graham. I think my problem with this one was that perhaps the author bit off more than she can chew so to speak. There was so much stuff going on that I think could have been left out altogether. I also did not like Hannah as a character. I never warmed to her or felt any sympathy for her plight. However her spiral down the rabbit hole was very well done and it did compel me to keep turning the pages. With some good editing this could have been five stars. 3.5 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the digital ARC.
3.5 stars. This book starts off with a very enticing premise. The podcast part of it was especially intriguing, and I suspect we’ll see many more of these stories in the near future. The reason my score went down, though, was because the last 20% or so of the book had too many twists and turns. It would have been better to leave it with the one final twist instead of inserting in a fake twist before the final one.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC. This review contains my honest, unbiased opinion.
This is one, crazy, twisted story! It was intense at times and I really enjoyed the whole psychological aspect of it.
I loved the addition of the Conviction podcast as a plot device to guide the actions in the story. We see Hanna go from a somewhat normal character to a grief-stricken possible psychopath through other character and through her own hazy and confusing memories.
I figured out what was going on pretty quickly and it wasn’t difficult, but I still kept wanting to read - which means it’s definitely a page-turner!!
It is well-known that I do not read the synopsis of books before I read the book, so sometimes I am genuinely surprised at the content. This one did not end up being even remotely close to what I thought it would be based on the title. I still have no idea why that is the title...? I also have a couple unanswered questions that I hope are addressed before the publication of this one.
The plot was a bit slow and wordy. I liked how the characters had been linked. The murder investigation was very interesting. The ending was ok. I hoping for a more interesting and believable ending.
Hannah's perfect life is about to come apart. Her husband was brutally murdered in their home 10 years ago, but she has no memories of that night. A man was accused and convicted of the crime, and while Hannah had doubts, she was relieved when the case was over. She took her daughter and moved from that house.
Now remarried to a wonderful man who loves her and her daughter, Hannah is settling in, Until a true crime podcast, Conviction, decides to use Hannah's deceased husbands case for their feature. Soon, everyone is convinced that Hannah killed her husband and an innocent man had been convicted.
This is a great story with an ending I didn't see coming.
Thank you NetGalley fol allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book.
Possession by Katie Lowe is a superb read with well-defined characters and plotline. Definitely a page turner and well worth a read!
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Hannah’s husband was stabbed to death in their home 10 years ago. She claimed to have no memory. A man was sent to jail for the crime and Hannah and her daughter moved on. Now Hannah is happily living with Dan and her daughter when a true crime podcast decides to explore the murder and suggests that the man who was locked up for it wasn’t guilty, which turns Hannah’s world upside down.
3.5 stars.
This book was ok for me. I had a hard time getting into it. I don’t feel like I connected with the story or the characters at first and so my mind would wander while I was reading it. Eventually things improved and I had some interest in what was going on, but not enough to get fully immersed. Ultimately it was a decent read.
This book is great! Would definitely recommend. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
It’s 2:20 am and I’m screwed for work in the morning BUT I COULD NOT PUT THIS DOWN! The gut wrenching anxiety I felt for Hannah and the unreliability of her narrative. Definitely did not see the ending coming. 5/5
Possession is a twisted book with some nasty characters and some not so nasty . Some have no redeeming qualities.
Love it.
Hannah can't remember details of when her husband was murdered years ago, the accused is about to become a focus of a podcast for wrongful convictions.
I love true crime podcasts , if I am not reading I am listening .
Katie Lowe gave me a different perspective on these podcasts; the one from the family's view point.
Trouble soon begins tenfold for Hannah, Dan and Evie her daughter.
Twists and turns around every corner keep the pages turning quickly and with an ending I did not guess.
Put Possession close to the top of your TBR pile , you wont be sorry you did.
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press ( one of my favourite publishers) for an intriguing read.
When I started this book I was fairly certain where it was going to lead.. and I was quite wrong. This book had so many twists, turns, and surprises that I didn't want to stop reading. I just had to see what was going to happen next.
We start with the murder of Graham Miller and how Hannah has no memory of what happened that night even though she was there when it happened. Then someone gets convicted and she thinks shes safe. She is raising her daughter and involved with a really nice guy when a podcast decideds to revisit the case and thats when things really begin to unravel... The pod cast does an excellent job of making everyone doubt Hannah, her so called best friend, her boyfriend, and even her daughter begins to question if her moms a killer..
I thought that Katie Lowe did a really good job of making us question what real, and what could just be in Hannahs head. and I would definitely read more books by Katie Lowe in the future.
A story that keeps you guessing, twists and turns until the very end, and even leaves you with a few questions.
Our heroine is unreliable, what we/she thinks she knows, we don't know that she knows it or if it's real or what to believe as the story unfolds.
This type of narrative is hard to nail because you have to balance uncovering the truth but in more than one way. Where the truth is both accurate and yet not because of the state of mind of the character. This author pulled this off very well!
I was always eager to pick the book back up and read more because I was so intrigued and caught up in the case. I was trying to uncover clues and determine what happened but I was truly taken in by the ending! I was surprised for sure.

Unfortunately, this didn't quite grip me like it should. I can usually tell if I'm going to enjoy a thriller by the first few chapters, and although it started strong, it soon got a bit boring for me. Plus the POV of the protagonist was a bit annoying. I wished I had enjoyed this more than I did.
She did it. A decade before Hannah killed her husband then made a new life with her daughter. Except she can never really escape her past and claiming she doesn't remember will no longer work as a viable excuse. Or did she really kill Graham? And where's her daughter? Did she dispose of her too? Possession is a good whodunit read. It messes with your mind as you try to sort all of the nuances of the mystery. The end will leave you gaping.
All Hannah wants is a peaceful existence in her quaint Derbyshire cottage, but she is unlikely to get it. 10 years ago, her husband Graham was gruesomely murdered with a kitchen knife in their home. Hannah has no recollection of that fateful night. Luckily for her, the police were successful in apprehending the killer.
Fast forward to the present, Amy Byers, host of the popular true crime podcast Conviction, is about to turn Hannah’s life upside down. She’s announced Graham’s murder as the subject of season 4, claiming that the police had it wrong all along. Suddenly, the skeletons from the past are tumbling out of the closet and Hannah’s friends and family start questioning her innocence (and sanity). Hannah is portrait of a woman unhinged... and now her memories are resurfacing one by one.
Possession is one hell of a spicy page-turner! I felt like a frog boiling in a pot. I had no idea what I’d gotten myself into until it was too late. The main character Hannah is a skilled therapist and yet ironically, is guarded and emotionally unavailable. At first I found her absolutely exasperating and resented her inability to communicate. But as the trauma takes over and the state of Hannah’s delicate psyche becomes increasingly precarious, I found myself feeling for her.
It’s easy to sigh and dismiss the use of an unreliable narrator as a hackneyed trope, but it really worked here. I applaud Katie Lowe’s writing, which takes on a disorienting and almost hallucinogenic quality that lends itself to the overall atmosphere of the novel. You’ll love the podcast element too, it’s contemporary, believable and fun.
I recommend Possession to anyone craving an exhilarating and compelling psychological thriller replete with generational curses, internet trolls and auditory hallucinations- oh my! And wow, that ending? Easily my favorite part. Watch your back, it packs a punch.
A big thanks to Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press and Katie Lowe for a free copy of Possession in exchange for an honest review.
action packed grabs you from page one and never lets you go. Really enjoyed this book. Thanknyou net galley for the chance to read this book now I'm going to have to but not for a gift.
Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Imagine your husband/father of your daughter is murdered, and the man who has been in prison for years, convicted of killing him, may be innocent. Imagine listening to a podcast pick apart the police investigation in its weekly episodes... and then they start shifting the blame towards you.
Years after her husband, Graham's murder, Hannah has moved on with her life; she has a long term boyfriend, her daughter is now a teenager, and everyone gets along happily. She has a good life until the podcast turns it upside down. Unfortunately Hannah doesn't do herself any favors, and this was my only real frustration with the book: She's constantly lying and without real necessity. I love an unreliable narrator, don't get me wrong. But it would have been much easier for Hannah's family to support her during such a chaotic time, if she was not constantly hiding things from them.
Everything else was quite enjoyable- the podcasts, the unfolding mystery of what really happened to Graham, the way his death haunts her and the unexpected ending.
Hannah is a psychiatrist whose husband was murdered in their bedroom and she does not remember a thing. A stranger is found guilty and sent to prison. Fast forward 10 years and a podcast called Conviction is featuring his death and the man they feel was wrongly convicted of it. Hannah and her daughter, Evie, who is now 16 live with with Hannah's boyfriend.
The book started out really good but then it fell flat for me. I found the switching back and forth between different timelines confusing as well as the many side story lines and, quite frankly, unrealistic happenings also confusing.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of this "busy" book in exchange for an honest review.
All in all this was a solid psychological thriller and I will definitely read other books by this author, if it is as good as this one. Hannah's husband is murdered and she claims she does not remember the events of that evening because it is so traumatizing for her and her young daughter. Fast forward 10 and a crime show, Convicted investigates her husband's mysterious death. Someone else convicted of the murder, has spent a decade clearing they are innocent!
So of course, there are sorts of other questions about who really killed Hannah's husband and that she may be more involved than other's surrounding her believe. It was frustrating as a reader because we know she has told lie after lie. I did love the ending of this book and highly recommend it.
