I love this boom. It pulls in so many things that are everyday life now.
It shows just how much people will go to the end of the earth (or their life) to track down the truth.
This family really shows the love we should have while also having our secrets.
Really great book
A dream debut. A family's quest for justice. A deadly persuit. Fast paced roller-coaster ride. A must read of 2021.
I could guess the culprit in the middle but it didn't stop me from reading it till the last word.

Every Last Fear is a satisfying mystery/thriller that I can promise will hold your attention to the end. It’s a tad predictable at times but still entertaining, and the characters are great. Looking forward to seeing more from this author.
This is not your run-of-the-mill thriller. Every Last Fear had me sucked in from the very first page and kept me there until the last. Alex Finlay’s no fluff, bullshit free character development is some of the best out there in this genre. I can’t wait to see what Finaly does next,
This ended up being amazingly good! I can't even fathom the horror of a situation where your entire family dies under suspicious circumstances, and this book does a really good job of bringing the humanity and the mystery together. Excellent read!
I really liked how the author made me feel invested in the lives of people I knew were already dead. I really liked the Maggie character (and, although I could tolerate Evan, I didn't think much of Olivia and her questionable choices). I thought Maggie's demise was really well done, and I was happy she received a "good" death. I also really, really, liked the interactions between Sarah and her husband. They were adorable.
I wasn't much of a Matt fan and I would have liked to have seen more of Danny. And, unfortunately, there were a lot of stereotypes which were unnecessary and detracted from the story, in my opinion.
All in all, a middle of the road read for me.
I had very high hope for this book, but I'm hearing that this book is extremely problematic and I won't be reading or reviewing this title. Thank you for understanding.
Solid thriller that was fast paced and actually kept me guessing longer than usual. The characters were interesting and the story sucked me in and kept reading in almost one sitting.
Wow! This suspense thriller kept me reading late into the night. A debut novel, it featured an assortment of strong and well-developed characters and a compelling plot. The multiple voices alternating in the chapters skillfully added just the right advance in the mystery’s solution each time. While the book also employed “podcast’ excerpts, which can sometimes be off-putting, these contributed appropriately to the suspense and interest. In all, a skillfully developed exciting read.

This is a really good mystery/thriller that is full of action and plenty of twists. It's a quick and easy read and I really enjoyed it.
NYU student Matt Pine's girlfriend broke up with him and after a late night of partying he returns to his dorm to find out that almost his entire family has died in a hotel in Mexico. The local Mexican police rule it an accident, but the FBI and State Department aren't so sure, and won't say why. Now his only living relative is his brother Danny, who is in prison for allegedly killing his high school girlfriend. Danny was the subject of a viral true crime documentary claiming that he was innocent, which caused the family's hometown to turn on the family. Matt's entire family have been tirelessly working to free Danny, but Matt believes he saw Danny with the dead girl's body the night of the murder.
Matt ping pongs from New York to Mexico to his hometown dealing with the aftermath of his family's death, and trying to deal with his feelings. When it looks like his family's death may not have been an accident, Matt must try to figure out how their deaths are tied to Danny's conviction.
This was a fun, quick read. The book is told from several different viewpoints and timelines. A lot of times this doesn't work in a book, but it does here. The ending started getting messy and unbelievable, but overall I still liked the book.
I received a complimentary copy of this from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press. All opinions are my own.
This book kept me glued to the pages! College student Matt Pine is awoken by the FBI one morning to be told his entire family is dead, except for his older brother, Danny, who is in prison. His dad and sister have made it their mission to get Danny exonerated, but Matt's not too sure he should be. Matt tells his brother about the family, then has to fly to Mexico to get the bodies, gets accosted there, and has to deal with the aftermath of everything. The story is told from alternating points of view, which allows the reader to really see the story unfold from a lot of angles. This would be a great vacation book, but maybe not if you were in Mexico! I received an advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
finished it in one night. for a book told my multiple pov's the author was able to keep my attention and move the story along seamlessly. this is an incredibly difficult feat and quite a remarkable one at that. I loved this book-- loved the pacing, the mystery and the characters.
It’s been a while since I have read a really good thriller/mystery and this one was really good!
It starts with a horrible tragedy as four members of a family are killed while in Mexico on sort of a holiday. Then you follow Matt as he is the only family member who can go and get his family from Mexico as his older brother is in prison for killing his girlfriend.
The story goes back and forth between Before and present day. In the before parts we get the POVs of the family members who have died and what they were doing that lead to them going to Mexico. See there was a documentary made on their son who is in prison because a lot of people believe he was innocent. This father and the daughter are big advocates for trying to find out what happened the night of the party. It has caused a lot of strain on the family and they ended up having to move from their hometown because of how the town and others were portrayed in the documentary especially the police.
In the present day parts we have Matt and the FBI agent who is working the case but from an interesting angle. Anyway she is helping him with having to get his family from Mexico because for some reason they will only release them to him. He gets there and has some strange things happen to him while he was there and he is also learning that it doesn’t seem like his family died of an accident like the Mexico police have said. The documentary crew are also around because they are wanting to make a follow up to the first one and have found some interesting facts about the deaths.
So it goes back and forth between the two time periods and weaves an interesting tale and I found it really hard to figure out what was going on and just wanted to get to the end so I could know and I was surprised!
Although I am not a huge fan of going back and forth between timelines I did think it helped to piece together a really interesting story. The Mother, Father, and daughter were the main focus in the before as the little boy was to young to have anything to do with the storyline. I enjoyed reading about them and how they were trying to piece things together about the one who was sent to prison.
Matt wasn’t an extremely likeable character, but he wasn’t horrible either. He is messed up young man who lost almost his whole family and has his doubts about his older brothers innocence because of something he seen. He just doesn’t use great judgement at times and I wanted to smack him, like when he was in Mexico and a pretty girl comes over and talks to him and offers him a ride. HELLO! Your in a foreign country don’t trust strangers!!! I will give him that he wasn’t thinking well as his family is dead but still. Stranger Danger!! I really liked the agent Sarah Keller, she works in a division of the bureau which really shouldn’t have anything to do with the murders of the family, but she steps up pretty good and gets things done.
I thought the mystery of what happened to his family was done really well and found the book to be very enjoyable. I would recommend it.
A gripping story that pulled me in right from the start. Once I started reading, I really didn't want to stop. Well-paced with great characters and some excellent twists and turns.
I'm really looking forward to reading more from this author.
I read an advanced digital copy of this novel courtesy on the publisher through NetGalley. Review available on goodreads.
3 (barely)stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
After reading all of the rave reviews for this one, I was really looking forward to starting this book. Unfortunately, it was not as great as I had expected.
A family ends up dead while vacationing in Mexico? The surviving son back at college who now needs to piece this puzzle together? Sign me up! The story started off with a bang and a very unique storyline. However, as time went on I found it to be boring and rather slow paced for a “thriller” (using this term very loosely). Around the halfway mark, I started to lose interest and it never really picked up for me. While I normally appreciate the alternating POV format, there is a lot going on and way too many characters giving their two cents.
The ending wasn’t great for me. The fact that I finished it was actually the best part. I know I’m in the minority, so please read the other reviews. You never know...you may love it!
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press - Minotaur Books and Alex Finlay for my advanced copy to read and review.
This book hooks you from chapter one and although it is billed as something for true crime fans, I think it's just generally for mystery fans. There is a bit of a true crime aspect, but it doesn't have that same feel because it's obviously fiction. I think this book is well written and certainly a page turner. The ending makes sense and wasn't rushed, but also didn't shock me. Overall I say this was a solid mystery book that will make for a great summer read. I could easily see a sequel or a spin-off book with the FBI character.
Other reviewers have pointed out how it is problematic how the Mexican authorities are spoken of in this book. They are called "The Mexicans" and the failings of some people are lumped into an overall negative stereotype that should have been edited out. This could have easily been altered with some word changes to not have a negative association of an entire heritage.
Content Warning: Death, Murder, Infidelity, Suicide
I wanted to love this one so much but I cannot support the way that the author talked about Mexican people. Very disappointed.
This was a thriller that kept you engaged. I liked how it alternated between the murder of his family, and also the murder his brother was convicted of. I liked the doubt, and the unknown. I liked all the secrets. I liked the heaviness and darkness of it. I enjoyed all the characters and what they added to the story.
When I first heard of this book and read the summary I immediately added it to my "wish list". Then when I saw how far away the release date was...I was so, so bummed! I remember thinking at the time, "how am I going to get through the next 6 months?!" But alas! It appeared on NetGalley and I was lucky enough to get approved for the ARC. And this book was everything I had hoped it would be! If you too love mystery/thrillers that have a true crime element woven into the story line, this will be right up your alley. I loved the the change in scenery (alternated between New York and Mexico). Definitely going to be one of my top 5 thrillers of the year! THANK YOU NetGalley!!!
