I can't say that I enjoyed this story the entire time. The story seemed like a typical Jane Austen and I was hoping for the ending that happened. I think my major problem with the story was that narrator. I found him a little boring. I may try this one again, either reading it myself or with a different narrator.
Persuasion is my favorite Jane Austen novel.
Audiobook is not my favorite way to consume Jane Austen novels. Especially when the narrator is a deep-voiced male who sounds very sleepy. Even at 1.75x speed I found it hard to concentrate on. If I hadn't read it before I'd have been completely lost.
So, 5 stars for the novel, but probably only 1 or 2 for this audiobook.
Amazing audiobook narrating !!
Listening to this narration of persuasion was a treat!!!
This is my favorite Jane Austin and I was so happy that I was approved to listen to it.
I adore Jane Austen's writing, and this book was no exception. I loved the narrator and was able to keep track of the character's voices and personalities.
Persuasion is one of my favorite Jane Austen classics and I might have read it atleast 3-4 times so far, if not more. So this review is mainly of the production and not of the content (which is anyways 5/5) in my opinion.
I liked the narrator, he was crisp and the words were well enunciated. I generally listen at 1.75x to 2x speed. And at those rates the narration was clear.
For those who are new to the book itself, oh lucky you! You get to read Persuasion for the first time! It is a second chance romance. At times I do feel like Anne behaves like a doormat and Frederick a prick.... but you've got to know where they are coming from. Do give a listen.
This book wasn’t for me... i was so bored and even the audiobook didn’t help me engage more with the book. It made it go by faster though which was great. I wasn’t blown away by the narrator either unfortunately..
Another classic, another romance, more perfection! Thank you so much to NetGalley and Harpers Collins for the audiobook!
I read this year's ago, and I really loved the sushi version of this! I felt that Mike Reid (sp? I couldn't be find his info ANYWHERE) did a great job! I'm definitely more used to Austen novels being narrated by women, so it was different but good!
The quality was great, his pacing was good, and he enunciated everything clearly, which I greatly appreciate considering Austen's heavier vocabulary. It's not my favorite book by her, but the audiobook was a big help for sure!
I enjoyed this very much and I want to listen to it again! Mike Read has a soothing voice with a cut-glass English accent, eminently suitable for a book by Jane Austen. I felt that I actually absorbed more of this moving story when I listened to it being read, rather than reading it.
The last finished work by Jane Austen, the tale concerns Anne Elliot, a sweet and clever woman, who has lost her 'bloom', and is regarded as being on the shelf at 27. She refused to marry Frederick Wentworth when she was only 19, because of the persuasion of her good friend and mentor, Lady Russell, and has regretted it ever since. She has a haughty, and silly family to put up with, especially her father, the Baronet. He is being overcome by the machinations of the gold-digger, Mrs Clay.
When the family has to move to Bath, Frederick, now a naval captain with money from his expeditions and prizes, reappears, but he appears to take a great interest in young and flirtatious Louisa Musgrove, one of Anne's sisters-in-law. However, Mr Elliot, the heir to the family, also makes an appearance, and he shows Anne attention. Can Anne recapture handsome Frederick's heart?
Perhaps the deepest of Jane Austen's novels, this book has many themes, including the dire effects of persuasion on young minds, the rise of modern professions, the growing freedom of women, and snobbery and class.
I received this audio book from Thomas Nelson through Net Galley in return for an honest review.
I received an advance digital copy of this audio book for the publisher and Netgalley.com. Thanks to all for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Persuasion is quite possibly Jane Austen's best novel. Everything about the story is perfect. The narration is well done, but it was unexpected to hear a male voice narrate Miss Austen's work. The narrator has a beautiful speaking voice with a lovely accent. The performance was excellent.
5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended.
I was excited to receive an audio of this book from Net Gallery in their new audio books area. The book came out in June and is narrated by Mike Read. It would be hard to review the book as it is Jane Austen and in my opinion, one of her finest. I love the interplay of the characters, the insights into society at that time and the hard-won happy ending. Definitely one of my favorites of her books. And I think a great starter for anyone wanting to read Austen.
I also suggest that anyone reading Jane Austen for the first time do audio as I think it helps to get the sound and cadence of the language with its almost backwards way of phrasing in your head. This version was lovely as he had an English accent which added to the narrator sections. However, when he changed his voice for the various characters, I did not care for many of this characterizations. In particular, Capt. Wentworth who was made to sound weak and a little creepy.
I honestly love new editions of classic novels and I was really excited to read (listen to) this version of Persuasion. Jane Austen is my all-time favorite author, and I am always happy to reread her books. This collection especially stood out to me because of the cover art; I love when classic books are reprinted with a cohesive theme across covers! I also listened to the Wonderland Collection (thank you to Netgalley for these copies!) and am so happy to have these beautiful covers now in my listening library. Persuasion is a classic and I was really happy to listen to it. This would be perfect for someone who want't to read but can't seem to find time--I put it on while doing chores and before bed, and I was done with it before I knew it. It was the perfect way to get a little dose of classic literature in my daily routine.
Jane Austen fans can expound on their favorite title of hers and why it is so. Pride and Prejudice is a popular title and was my first introduction to Austen through school, but I happened upon Persuasion shortly thereafter, and while I enjoy various aspects of a number of her titles, it is my personal favorite, the one I return to every few years for a re-read.
Anne Elliot is a dutiful daughter, full of sense and obedience, even if her father and sisters don't earn such deference. Her family lets out their home due to being unable to keep it while maintaining their preferred standard of living, so they remove to Bath.
Eight years earlier, Anne fell in love with Frederick Wentworth, but, when her father and her dear friend frowned on the proposal, believing him to be beneath her in station, she submits to them. Now, though, she crosses paths with him years later and is trying to manage her unchanged feelings in light of his found success and wealth and his apparent disinterest.
While I like to think that accepting or rejecting one due to whether or not they are worthy (read: wealthy with the right family connections) was from a bygone era, I can still see how such assumptions can influence who we might surround ourselves with to this day. I yet aspire that we can value character and perseverance above outward, arbitrary measures.
I admit I might find this story my favorite because I can see much of my own personality in Anne, but I'm glad that respecting her elders in her youth -- even if founded on their prejudiced assumptions -- does not keep her from happiness in the end, and she has matured to know what makes one valuable and worthy of esteem and is willing to stand up for herself.
The audiobook is performed by Mike Read, and it's a different take to have a male narrator; I don't know if it was due to how the recording was made, but it took me a little time to adjust to the reader. I enjoyed returning again to this familiar story, though.
(I received a digital ALC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.)
Mike Read did an excellent job of bringing heart and feeling to Jane Austen's words. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this version and would definitely recommend it!
The last book that Jane Austen wrote is set in Taunton and in Bath. Anne, the middle daughter of three sisters is both gentle and intelligent, slow to speak and not drawing attention to herself. Her older daughter Elizabeth is less discerning with money and friendships whilst her youngest daughter (and the only one that is married) is self absorbed and leans on others unfairly. As always, Austen captures different personalities so well and reminds us that the seemingly charming individuals may not be all that they seem whilst the personalities that suck oxygen out of the room exist in every town and age.
'Persuasion' is one of my favourite books ever. I remember discovering it shortly after falling in love with Jane Austen because of 'Pride & Prejudice' and admiring how deep Austen's awareness of women's inner feelings is. The way Anne Elliot investigates her own emotions and actions is utterly recognizable. She is painfully aware of the follies of her family, her own guilt and shortcomings, as well as the worth of others. Anne Elliot is a fascinating character and I was very pleased to discover an audio book of it, especially narrated by a man.
Mike Read does an excellent job, differentiating between all the different characters and adding emotion and depth where required. My only gripe was that as far as Austen heroes go, Wentworth is right up there and the voice chosen for him by Read felt a little off for me.
This review is of the audiobook of Persuasion by Jane Austen, narrated by Mike Read, who gives a great performance.. Fans of Jane Austen and the classics will appreciate this audiobook.
I was so excited to see that Netgalley had started to do audiobooks as part of their reviews, so obviously I applied for two of such audiobooks and this was one of them.
Before I review the book, one frustrating thing about the audiobook. It took forever to download. Every time I tried to get it on the Netgalley app it just wouldn't work. It took about a day to get this audiobook to work, so when it finally did, I was through the moon excited. The reading of the book was fantastic and it was great to try out this function of Netgalley with a book I already knew!
As many people have already read this book, being a classic, I will keep my review of it short and sweet.
First off, as many know, this book was the last of Austen's to be published and it encompasses the story of a girl, Anne Elliot. This book is full of hope and second chances, as many of Austen's books are, but is an incredibly deep and moving story as well. As a lover of the "second chances" trope that is something I love very much in this novel and will continue to love for all eternity, so hats off to Austen for that!
Another aspect of this book that is enjoyable, as with any Austen novel, is the romance. This romance builds and simmers throughout the book though not in the way I might have expected compared to some of her other novels. Austen does and incredible job of throwing these two leads together in a literal washing machine of love and feelings.
If you have read any of Austen's novels and are looking to pick this one up, do it. If you are looking to pick one up for the first time, start here. I know most people lean towards Pride and Prejudice or Emma, but this is certainly a lovely place to start!
I love Jane Austen. Persuasion is my third favorite and I have read it previously. I enjoyed this audiobook version. While the main narration was, at times, a bit flat, I thought he did a good job with voices.
This is a lesser known novel by the wonderful Jane Austen but still a gem and one of my favorites! I've listened to several audiobook versions of this novel and though it took me some time to warm up to Mike Reed, I quite enjoyed hearing his voice narrate one of my favorite classics!
“You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope.”
Jane Austen is apparently not for me. I found the narrator hard to follow, and he also sounded a bit like a robot to me. The plot was difficult for me to follow, and it was difficult to keep up with the characters. Overall, this story didn't hold my attention, and I was sad to put it down.
