In the early months of the pandemic, I listened to a number of children's classics that I had never read. Among them was Alice in Wonderland and I did a bit of deep dive into the popularity of of this world Lewis Carroll created. During PBS's Great American Read, Allison wrote a piece on Alice in Wonderland. We also reviewed works by other authors based on the books and the Wonderland universe.
Even if you haven't read the books, you are probably familiar with the plot thanks to Disney making a movie.
Carroll's stories are considered nonsense fiction (it's apparently a real genre) and it makes sense given how many times Alice states whatever is happening is nonsense.
This collection includes Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and The Tangled Tales. In 2020, I listened to a different edition of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. I had never heard of A Tangled Tale until I saw it listed in this collection.
This audiobook was released at the same time as a limited-run collector's print edition.
I like Simon Bubb as the narrator of this collection more than the narrator of the other edition I listened to. I'm not a huge Alice fan, but Bubb's narration made me enjoy the story more.
I think A Tangled Tale would be better read than listened to. It is kind of like word math problems and I couldn't tell if they were unsolvable or if it was because I was listening to them and couldn't keep the numbers straight. If you like those math riddle memes we see on social media, then you might enjoy this.
If you want to introduce your kids to the classics or you are a big fan of Wonderland, then I recommend this collection.
My review will be published at Girl Who Reads on Sunday - https://www.girl-who-reads.com/2023/12/2-audiobooks-for-young-readers.html
The Wonderland Collection by Lewis Carroll is a stunning addition to any book lover's collection. Stunning details encased these classic tales. I purchased this book for my collection and it’s even more stunning in person. And of course, this classic tale is timeless and fantastic.
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
A wonderful story, which is always worth revisiting! I enjoyed the extra material, such as the introduction, which added new layers of understanding to the novel. For a novel as whimsical and odd as 'Wonderland', Simon Bubb was sometimes a bit of a dry narrator. While I enjoy this myself, to get to imagine all the oddities on my own, other listeners may look for a narrator who brings more of the novel's eccentricities to life!
An absolutely stunning edition - If you haven't dived into Womderland yet, this is for you! A good pick for all collectors!
I'm so sorry that I forgot to review this one. I have listened to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland several times and with different narrators. While I thought that Simon Bubb did a good job, this wasn't my favorite version. I give The Wonderland Collection 5 stars for story and 3 for narration, leaving us at a pretty solid 4 star rating.
Loved this. This was an amazing reading experience and the narrator did a commendable job in highlighting and expressing all emotions wonderfully.
I loved this book reading it physically and adored the audiobook even more. The narrator is great and captures the whimsical fever dream this short book is.
I would highly recommend this audiobook edition of the beloved classic.
The narrator has captured the essence of the story and rendered it in a very likeable manner.
In the past I have come across audiobooks (esp of classics) which jarred on my ears with either the tone or the voice or such unhappy interruptions as swallows. Fortunately, this audiobook doesn't suffer from any of those.
I am not rating the book in this review, just the quality of the audiobook.
The book as we know is a classic and rightly deserves to be called so.
Great narrator retelling a classic story. What's not to love? As with any good audiobook, the narrator enhances the story.
I never read Lewis Carroll as a child and truly enjoyed listening to the fantastic tales as narrated by Simon Bubb. The Summer collection cover is lovely.
4/5 stars
♠️Thanks to Netgalley for providing an audiobook e-arc!
✨ It was fun! The introduction and annotations/notes definitely helped me a lot with understanding the book with more depth. Reading it alongside an audiobook provided by Netgalley was a great touch.
Thank you Netgalley for an opportunity to revisit one of my all time favourite. It was incredible listening to the audio version of these stories, very well narrated audiobook.
I have read the individual tales in this book previously, but this was a great re-read. I enjoyed hearing the stories again in this compiled collection. Thank you!
Thank you so much to net galley for sending me a copy of this audiobooks, as this is one of the first books that really made me want to read more I was so happy to be able to have an audiobook version
Thanks to the publishers for sharing this. The Alice books are fun to revisit, and I had forgotten how witty they are. I found myself chuckling at times. I found the reading a little dry, and it might be nice to have a more expressive narrator. At least it's all nice and clear without any throat clearing sounds etc. and pronounced properly.
Everyone knows the tales of Alice in Wonderland but I haven't actually read all the books before. That being said there is nothing I can review on these stories that can add to what is already out there.
What I can say though is that I really enjoyed all three books within this collection. As this is the audiobook version of these tales I can also tell you how much I enjoyed the narrator. His storytelling abilities I can not fault, the pace of his reading was easy to digest and it pulled you into the stories. I absolutely loved his ability to do accents! In audiobooks narrators often just change the pitch of their voice, either going higher or lower. But this narrator on top of doing that gave slightly different accents. All different British accents, I particularly liked the Scottish of the Unicorn!
If I was to recommend a way to read this book I would highly recommend this version of the Audiobook .
I really enjoyed this one!
I was provided an advanced digital copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley for review purposes, all opinions are my own.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
I am a huge Wonderland Fan and jumped at the chance to review an audio copy. The narrator was kind of dull and wasn't as memorable to me as i would have wished.
This is the audiobook of a collectible edition. The series features various classic stories. This volume combines the two most famous Alice books– Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass– as well as A Tangled Tale. That adds up to 7 hours of audio, so plan accordingly. The narrator is fine--no complaints, but not particularly memorable. I hadn't heard these stories since I was small, so it was nostalgic.
Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for a digital ARC for the purpose of an unbiased review.
It had been so long since I last read these charming stories! I had forgotten how witty and clever Alice's adventures were. The narrator is wonderful, with his charming accent and entertaining voices. Alice and all of her friends quickly come to life in this lively audio book version of Lewis Carroll's popular books.
