The Prison Healer is an absolute gem of a novel that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. With its vivid world-building, compelling characters, and heart-pounding plot twists, this book is a true page-turner that I couldn't put down.

One of the standout aspects of this novel is its protagonist, Kiva Meridan. She's a resilient and resourceful character whose journey from a prisoner to a healer is nothing short of inspiring. I found myself rooting for her every step of the way, captivated by her strength and determination in the face of adversity.

The author, Lynette Noni, has created a rich and immersive world within the confines of the prison, filled with danger, mystery, and intrigue. The way she weaves together magic, politics, and survival makes for a captivating read that will leave you eagerly anticipating what happens next.

Noni's writing style is engaging and emotive, drawing readers into Kiva's world and making them feel every triumph and setback along her journey. The pacing is spot-on, with just the right balance of action, suspense, and character development to keep readers hooked until the very end.

Overall, The Prison Healer is a gripping and unforgettable story that will appeal to fans of fantasy and adventure alike. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a thrilling read that will keep them guessing until the final page.

The worldbuilding is so believable that at times it's hard to read, the prison is so unforgiving, so bleak, it really sucks you in and pulls you into the world. Excellent writing, very inventive plot, and the characters gain your empathy immediately. Older high school readers would really enjoy this.

I loved the maps. I always love when a book includes maps, especially when they were as pretty as the ones included here. The world building was beautifully created and I fell in love with the side characters just as much as the main characters.

Ooh, a great start to the series and I cannot wait to read the next two books. I love Kiva's character, she does what needs to be done to survive and still manages to care about everyone in the infirmary. I liked the twists this story took while Kiva tried to figure out what is causing the sickness and I like that she identified a correlation between the current sickness and the one that took her father's life, she would have made a great scientist.

DNF. Couldn’t connect with the way the main character was being written, and nothing about the writing or the story or the people was making me want to keep reading.

The first in a trilogy by Noni, this book makes a compelling read! Kiva only survives in Zalindov prison by following orders at the prison's healer. Others die quickly in the misery of the mines. When the rebel leader is caught, she is very ill and put under Kiva's care. Kiva finds herself defending the woman by agreeing to the harrowing Trial by Ordeal, an almost impossible task for those who do not possess elemental magic. Kiva only survives with help from an unexpected source. This book has plenty of suspense to keep the reader glued to the page, and the twist at the end will have the reader immediately out the door to find the next book.

This was great start to this new series. Kiva works as healer in a death prison where she has been for 10 years. When the dying rebel queen in sent into her care, Kiva will risk it all to try and save her. This had complicated characters and no one is exactly who they seem. I'm looking forward the sequel.

I think it has everything I love in a book. A confined place. An interesting female character. Mistery. A huge plot twist. The writing was enthralling ! I wasn't completely into the story at first because I felt the scenes were a bit long, but I then completely fell in love with it, I couldn't put it down: a real page turner.

The past couple of years it has felt a bit weird to be reading a book and have some sort of illness or plague come up, especially with the awareness that it takes time to write and edit a book, so some of these newer stories were actually written before the pandemic.

Regardless, the idea of this story intrigued me. Considering that I very frequently play clerics in D&D, books following healers always grab my attention. The question is whether or not they can hold my attention. For the most part, I can say that The Prison Healer did manage to keep my focus. I did set it down and walk away a few times…although I can’t say that was the book’s fault. More the fault of life.

And with the book synopsis pitching this book as one for fans of Sarah J Maas and Sabaa Tahir…eh, maybe I can see where that might be true, but I don’t think this book quite achieves the same level of pace or building of tension or flowing descriptive language that the others provide. This was a good read, but I personally didn’t feel as absorbed into the story as I would with Maas or Tahir.

Then there’s the biggest plot reveal of the story, which became pretty obvious at maybe the halfway point even though it wasn’t actually revealed until later than that. Honestly I’m a bit upset that I didn’t realize it sooner because as soon as I realized it, it was just so obvious. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not mad when a book has obvious twists and turns. Sometimes it’s nice to kick back and relax with a story where you can figure out the basic plot points. But when I read books that are predictable, there’s also this part of me just hoping for the book to truly surprise me and do something unexpected.

I still need to pick up books two and three of this trilogy, because I’m intrigued enough to continue with the story. I did like the characters, and would like to know more about the world. These days I find myself very excited by elements of worldbuilding in stories.

I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley. This is my honest review.

This has been on my TBR pile for so long, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. I really enjoyed the storyline and seeing the characters change throughout the story was a great character development. The plot was great and kept my attention. I'm glad I got the chance to read this and will be on the lookout for more in the future!

While the action took a whole lot of time to pick up the pace, once it did, it was a solid story to follow! The Prison Healer proves that a fantasy book can be written in the confines of a single location and be done well. However the magic was the more subtle element of the overall story, it was more about survival and the effect of imprisonment on people's psyche. I liked the relationships between characters and it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

That ending tho!

Young Kiva's family is broken apart, some escaped, one killed, and some imprisoned. Circumstances look dire, yet she's still alive and working as the prison healer 10 years later. With a young boy she swore to look after and a determination not to make any friends (because the likelihood of them surviving was low), she finds unlikely allies and friendships. The stakes raise when a supposed rebel queen is brought to her to be healed for her Trial by Ordeal, which consists of 4 trials. The problem is, the woman is extremely I'll and unable to participate. Threats are traded, choices are made, and circumstances grow more complicated for Kiva. If that wasn't enough to contend with, her abilities are stretched thin as a mysterious deadly illness ravages the prison population. I don't want to give anymore away; please read it yourself, it's sooo good!!

There's a lot of hype around this one and honestly it just fell a bit flat for me. The ending though - way to hook us for book two!
