I didn't like this book as I felt it was really slow and confusing, I didn't like the way it kept going back and forth between characters as it didn't blend together . I also thought it was unrealistic
First book I’ve read by this author and it won’t be the last! A great start to a series that had you gripped from the start, with lots of twists and turns. I loved the main character Cassie , and can’t wait to see her character develop in the coming books. Great read and looking forward to the next one!!
Such a good book, couldn't put it down love the twists and turns
Would recommend to others

This is the first book by this author that I've read. I thought the beginning of the book started slow and I was almost overwhelmed by the vast array of characters, but eventually I got right into the book. The 2 main characters are strong and enjoyable and there are plenty of twists and turns.
Tense police procedural with a feisty, go it alone female lead detective. trying to balance a hard private life and being a good cop. She largely succeeds although I remain somewhat unconvinced about all of that go it alone behaviour. Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
A new series with a young female detective… working hard to keep her professional and personal life balanced. This is not easy because having to raise your younger brother after the dead of your parents is not a walk in the park. The younger brother is a typical 15 year old; doesn’t want to listen, doesn’t want to work hard for school, blames his big sister Cassie for everything that is wrong in his life. She loves him dearly and that’s good because otherwise she would probably wring his neck. Older brother Alex left the country and cannot be bothered with Cassie and Neil. He plays a minor role in this story. I hope that in coming books in this series both Alex and Neil will see Cassie for what she is: she is great (although not perfect).
In her professional life, there are some very, very obnoxious male colleagues that make Cassie’s life very hard. Despite everything, she tries to do her work, catching the bad guys, as good as she can. What not always helps, is her tendency to speak before she thinks.
There are actually a couple of storylines that all flow nicely together in the end. I warmed to Cassie and at times I could really wring the necks of her horrible sexist colleagues. Snappy dialogues, lots of twists and turns and a small cliff-hanger that hints to the second book in the series make the start of this series a very good one.
Thanks to Netgalley for a digital reading copy of this title.
First book I've read written by Margaret Murphy but certainly won't be the last.
Set in a Liverpool someone is abducting young women.
Cassie Rowan goes under cover working the streets in an effort to trap the perpetrator and has a couple of run ins with him without success.
Thoroughly decent book that kept my full focus throughout and kept me wanting more and always seeking to read just one more chapter before going to sleep.
There is a predator stalking the streets of Liverpool, abducting women and making them endure the most unimaginable horrors. The hunt for the man known as The Furman has become personal for Detective Cassie Rowan after an undercover operation fails, leaving him free to continue his reign of terror. Unfortunately for Cassie, he knows who she is and soon he has his sights set on her...
This is the first in a new series to feature DC Cassie Rowan and after reading this, she is definitely a detective I will be getting to know better. A strong character with a mind of her own, she feels let down, at times, by her colleagues who think that she is not always a team player. I did not see her like this, however, feeling that she had such empathy for the victims of these heinous crimes that she would do anything to bring this man to justice. I admired her ability to work such long hours whilst acting in loco parentis to her younger brother after the death of her parents.
The perpetrator is a particularly horrible one, but for those who do not like reading anything too gruesome there is no need to worry as the author does not go into graphic detail. The setting helps to create an atmospheric backdrop to the plot, the fog adding to the tension as The Furman stalks the streets of Liverpool, looking for his next prey. If, like me, you are very familiar with the locations mentioned in the book, this also adds another air of menace - moreso if you find yourself at the scene of one of the abductions early in the morning like I did a few days ago!
The thing I most enjoyed about Before He Kills Again was the sudden plot twist which, although unexpected, made complete sense, the clues having been there throughout the book. This was where we really saw Cassie coming into her own and I admired her tenacity in following her own instincts even if this did mean putting herself into danger!
Before He Kills Again is a great start to a new series and I look forward to seeing where Margaret Murphy takes Cassie next.
A new author for me and what a page turner. Detective Cassie Rowan is working undercover. Operation Kerb Watch, she is dressed as a working girl . But this lady is street smart , short tempered and always gives as good as she gets. Cassie is after The Furman a serial rapist who has so far claimed seven victims. Cassie will do whatever it takes to catch this man even putting her life in danger. I literally devoured this book in one sitting, a nail biting, chilling game of deadly cat and mouse. Little does Cassie know that she is the mouse and the trap is already set. This book ticked all my boxes and I am already searching out more of this authors work. LOVED IT!!!!!
Thanks to Joffre Books and Netgalley for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
I have read books by Margaret Murphy before and found them a bit slow and predictable, I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t up there with the bigger mystery authors...yet. I think there is more to come from this author and the characters in this book are so strong as to really draw me back to read more about them.
Gripping with lots of twists. I'm looking forward to seeing both the author and the characters develop as more books are added to the series. There is definitely room for both to grow but this is a really promising start. Recommended.
This is a must read for fans of crime thrillers. Theres alot going on. Cassie rowan isnt really a team player but one of the good guys..i found it gripped me from the start and i kept saying to myself just one more page........ highley recommeded
Before He Kills Again by Margaret Murphy is a brand new detective series. Cassie Rowan is a young, pretty fresh detective and is a woman willing to go out on a limb to get results, the only problem being she sometimes doesn't wait for the team to get involved.
A serial rapist is walking the streets of Liverpool, targeting mainly prostitutes. He leaves them alive but no one is able to identify him, but he leaves them wrapped in a fur stole leading to his name The Furman. Cassie seems to think she has the right man in her sight but everyone, including her superiors do not agree. Has she found the right perpertator or not?
I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent book, plenty of suspense and mystery to keep me reading. Cassie is a great new character, fiesty and independant and the book portrays the struggle women can have in certain jobs these days. Thank you to Joffe Books and netgalley for the copy of the book for me to take part in the blog tour today.
Police thriller with a vast array of diverse characters. Difficult to get in to and slow to get going. Not entirely convincing.
This was a very exciting book, trying to catch the killer before he kills again. I did get a bit confused in the middle, but overall a good book.
Carrie Rowan is a detective, working under cover, as a street girl, with the goal of establishing who the furman is....an individual who initially targets these girls, subjecting them to strangulation and rape, leaving them physically and mentally destroyed.
Alan Palmer is a psychoanalyst. Having recently returned to work following a personal strategy, he fights hard to save his marriage whilst helping some complex clients. Dylan Corbie appears to be stalking people whilst keeping extremely in-depth diary notes. Osbourne is a professional man who it appears has set up a scam with a police officer.
When Alan's good friend, a psychiatrist, is murdered in his own home, the motives of all of these people are questioned.
An in-depth book with a complex plot. However I really loved the read, many twists, fast paced with rich character description. I highly recommend this b
Margaret Murphy is an exciting new author to me the type who’s writing keeps you on the edge of your seat holding your breath.
This is the first book in a series featuring DC Cassie Rowan and psychiatrist Alex Palmer an unlikely partnership but has all the trademarks of being a best seller.
It is a rollercoaster of a ride with twists and thrills, emotional highs and lows, believable characters, and a great story.
Book of the year so far for me.
Wow!!! Loved this book!!! The author did a great job writing this book and making everything come together. It was really hard to put this book down. Constable Rowen was a great and feisty character. I loved how she did not listen to the others and did what she felt like she needed to do. She knew something was up and she made sure to do her best to find out. I did not like Wicks and I am hoping that something will be done with him in the next book. I will not go in to detail to give spoilers though. I love books with strong female leads which this book gave to me. I also love when characters do not believe the the lead character then that character proves everyone wrong. This book also gave me this too. Highly recommend this book.
First of all, I want to say thank you to Netgalley, Margaret Murphy, and JOFFE BOOKS crime thrillers and mysteries for giving me a chance to read this copy of book in exchange for an honest review.
So, this book is the first book in Cassie Rowan Series. DC CASSIE ROWAN is a young policewoman who has been the main carer for her younger brother, Neil, since their parents died. She has to balance this role with her demanding job. She is working undercover on the streets of Liverpool trying to find the ‘Furman’, a man who has been brutally assaulting sex workers. Cassie blames herself and another detective, Wicks, for not catching him sooner. Forensic scientist Dr Ian Chan is on her side, but her boss Detective Chief Inspector Pat Warman thinks she is uncooperative and needs to work as part of a team.
At the first half of this book, I got disappointed that this is not a whodunit detective story that I was expected it to be. But I think it's not a whodunit book. Because you will already tell who might be the real 'predator' or "Furman". The only thing you need is a concrete evidence to confirm who might be the culprit. And that's this book is about. It's not your usual Crime novel. I honestly consider to DNF this book because of it's slow-paced vibe. But I'm glad that I pushed through it.
Yes, for me the book is slow-pace because nothing really happens in the first half of the book. It's just go with introducing the characters and their backgrounds, which I think is a good way to get the readers feel connected to the characters. At first I really doesn't understand why this book has a multiple perspective and I'm thinking that some things just added to make the book more interesting and I thought that wasn't really necessary. But joke's on me, fellas! Because in the later part of the book the author shows the relevance of those "unnecessary" things. And I realized that every detail of this book is important in the plot.
One thing I also loved in this book are the short chapters. It's not like the other books that has 20+ pages every chapter, and I am not a fan of that type of books. So, bonus point for this book!
I just want to honestly say that it's somehow triggered me with sexual assault ('cause I have an irrational fear with that topic). So, trigger warning for that. I just want to say that the author really did a good job with replacing sensitive words with a much "lighter" term, so it's not heavy or not that triggering to read (atleast for some people).
So, let's talk about the characters and topic. One thing I love about crime thrillers is the references to True-Crimes. I'm not sure if it's just coincidence, but at first the case they are investigating is reminding me of the case of Jack The Ripper. And in later part, the modus operandi of the "Furman" kinda reminds me of modus operandi of the famous serial killer, Ted Bundy. I don't know if the book is inspired with real-life serial killers or just a coincidence. I should feel disappointed or annoyed that the author re-tells or re-creates the modus operandi of real life serial killers and not giving the killer an authentic modus operandi, but i'm not. I really find it so amusing.
This book also talks about the topic of stalking and gives you a viewpoint of the stalker. And it's really creepy. But that's the reality. Lol. This book also shows the reality of police investigations, sometimes it's so frustrating with all the dead-end clues. But in this book the frustration was in a good way to make the book more thrilling yet realistic.
As for the characters, at first I think Cassie is just an average main character in a crime thriller book. But later on, I found some feministic qualities of her. She really speaks what she really thinks, and sometimes she regret doing that. But her responses to sexist comments about women by her coworkers is just so badass. I also loved the moment Cassie Rowan's clever way to convince her boss to hear her theory on the case. She's not just physically strong but also mentally and emotionally. Even if she had issues with her family, she clearly handled it well. For the the other side characters (not all) in this book are kinda annoying. But in a really good way, cause it's just showing the reality of workplace enviroment and colleagues. But the incompetentness of her boss is so irritating. She is so immature. And really insulting (atleast for me) that she's making women to shut-up even though she's also a woman. Anti-feminist I think. She's only listening to men talking. And doesn't want to admit that sometimes she is wrong.
As for the Furman, I was really impressed with his tactics. He is so manipulative and able to pull the strings of emotions of other people. It really shows how psychopathic his character is.
My only problem with this is the first few chapters of the book is somehow hard to understand or to read and you can't really follow what's happening. There are words that are new to me, and as a reader that uses english as a second language only, it's a bit hard for me to understand some parts and I really need to go back to re-read the same sentences/words again. I just wished that the author uses some much simpler words so that other readers who doesn't really speaks english as their first language will follow what's really happening to the story. But here's the good thing, I didn't know that there's a glossary at the end of the book for the readers who are having a hard time with not so familiar words! And that is really helpful!
So, yeah. I rated this 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. It's true that I got really disappointed with the first half of the book but the last 30% of the book got picked me up from wanting to be done with it to gets me very excited with what's happening. And I really meant it when I said it is so thrilling! So if you are looking for a good crime thriller book but not a fan of whodunit storyline, this book is perfect for you! I totally recommend this!
First, a thank you to NetGalley for sharing the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of those books that I have mixed feelings about. Rather than a story about a serial killer it's a story about a serial rapist (which for lack of a better term, I also find a lot too yucky) and the detective who's hot on his trail. It's fair to say that it's a bit of a cat and mouse story, which is a genre that I always enjoy. There's also a psychologist who at first is ardent about protecting the suspect (his client) but soon become a suspect himself. However, he ultimately becomes integral to hunting the suspect down, which is a nice twist. And, unlike the majority of the reviewers, I felt that the characters - aside from the psychologist - to be a little underdeveloped and at times the transitions between them to be a little clunky. That said, I did enjoy the story and I'll be interest to see how the series unfolds.
