Once in a while, when I am in the mood for something wacky, I pick up a book with a blurb like this. Usually, the strange storyline is accompanied by intentionally funny writing that enhances the oddities in the scenarios. This feature existed in this book, as well. I flew through it in one sitting.
Our leading lady is in hiding, and over the course of the book, she lets us into her past and shows the reader all the things that are at stake for her. For day-to-day needs, she finds herself a job which comes with strange allusions to the workings of Suite #45. She tries to get out of the situation multiple times but digs herself further into the chaos that reigns around the job. I liked the writing, the pacing but the story itself left me wanting more. I should have been better invested in the mental and physical well-being of the characters given how well I was getting on with the reading. There are a lot of action scenes with guns blazing and other such instances. I would recommend picking it up if one is on the lookout for a quick read. Some of the topics handled were not as light as the rest of the book and, although they formed the backbone of the story, it did not jar the tone of the story.

I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, and the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
What a great read! I have found a book that hits all of my must-haves, i.e., must have action, must have a great story, must have some mystery, and it always is nice to have some humor when you have this package. I voluntarily read and reviewed a review copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This is one of those books that I would buy it if I had to, just so I can read it, so being chosen to review a copy is the icing on the cake. Honestly, the title is also part of the fun for me. It sparks great interest for me and drew me right to this book.
Emily's background is not necessarily that original, because there are a lot of good books about women's struggles in life. I won't give that away because it is paramount to understanding Emily's motives for how she responds to situations. Sometimes she is kick-butt, smart-mouth, and sort of in your face until she thinks about the fact she should be afraid. It is obvious she has learned many lessons to have been on the run and made it all the way to the Mexican border. She is good at hiding in plain sight.
Obviously, the best part of the book was her new job at the "Pest Control" company. Her new office was where some of the funniest moments happen. If I had one complaint about She's Got the Guns, it would be that the book was too short. I am really hoping that the next Suite #45 book will be a longer novel. M.O. Mack does a great job holding reader interest. If you read the blurb or take a look at the author's website you will see that the author believes in straight with no chaser when telling a story. I can really appreciate that, but, it just went too fast. Great for a story and sad for a reader is really enjoying themselves, especially a visual reader like me. This is a great start to a new series and I am really looking forward to the next Suite #45 installment and I cannot wait to see what the title is for that book. Yes, I know that is putting a bit of pressure on the author, but, somehow, I am pretty sure that M.O. Mack is up to the task. Well this was a fun, rollercoaster ride of a story! She’s Got the Guns is quite a short book or it seemed that way to me. The plot was packed with danger and thrills as Emily jumps from one tense situation to another. She’s Got the Guns has plenty of witty and adventure filled moments. Along with an abundance of dodgy characters and dangerous people. Let’s just say that when Emily started her new job answering calls for a pest control company she never expected to find herself tangled up with a group of hit men!
It was very easy to be pulled into Emily’s crazy and upturned world. I really enjoyed seeing Emily try her best to get out of this deadly situation but it was never going to be easy! Emily really brings the snark and has a lively personality that had me smiling away to myself. There is only a hint of romance in this book so it doesn’t overpower the story just adds a flirty little touch. There is a fast pace to the story that kept me entertained throughout. In no time at all I was turning the last page even more eager to pick up the next book in the series. I guess I’ll have to wait patiently. Or at least try to!
Feeling like you need a new female heroine with a badder than bad 'mentor', with a little romantic will they/won't they thrown in? Yup, you've found her.
Emily is a character that you get attached to VERY quickly, as her story starts to come out, and see she is evolving (and very quickly). Then once the truth of her new employment comes out, the sparks start to fly all over (literally from gunfire and explosions, and in the figurative romance department). This is a story you read and in your head, you're casting the movie (that you really really want to see, but are afraid the inevitable casting will let you down from the vision in your head (sigh)). Be very prepared to sit down and not want to get up as once this story grabs you, its a speedball on a runway, until the end, which leaves you literally begging for more (good thing this is the beginning of a series! DONT miss this one!
The summary of this book sounded fun so I thought I would try it. I am so glad that I did, not stop fun and action from the very beginning. Emily Rockford is running for her life from her FBI husband. If he finds her, he will kill her. She is hired as a receptionist at a run-down building which she eventually discovers is a check in station for hit men, well, hit people. From day one her life is threatened as she tries to figure her way out of this situation, but there is no out…once you’re in, you’re in. An entertaining read as Emily adjusts to what may be her new life. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Emily is running from an abusive marriage and ends up in El Paso with a new identity and little money. Then takes a sketchy job just to get on her feet. That’s where it all starts. Lots going on right from the start. Don’t blink or you’ll miss something! You’ll love all the suspense, twists, and action all through the story. Looking forward to what else is in store for Emily.

My, my, my. Give me more, please! Do I really have to wait for the second installment?
Emily Rockford is trying to disappear. Her ex, a corrupt FBI agent, is looking for her. She steals away to her second best destination in Texas. She changes her name, finds a place to live, and surprisingly, a job. She answers an ad in the local paper. The interview process is a bit obscure, but Emily keeps her head up and shows up. A pest control company, who knew.
A pest control company, really? Hmmmm........Nope. Not buying it. Emily realizes there is a bit more to this company than so-called pests. All she is supposed to do is take phone messages, then put them in the drawer of her desk. An ominous phone call. A customer stalking her because the boss never got back to him. A man working for the boss coming in and wanting his money for a job well done. What money? Where is the boss? What the hell is going on? Who exactly is she working for? A company. An elite company with a special skill set.. A big ol' bunch of hit men and hit women. That's who she is working for.
This book is chalk full of everything that warrants a book to be read, maybe more than once. Buckle up and hold on tight because you are in for a thrilling ride. In fact, I believe I have one heck of a case of whiplash. I was so not expecting a book of about 200 pages to pack such a wallop. The execution of the story is phenomenal. The main characters work brilliantly together and the best part? Emily takes no sh*t!!!
Thanks to NetGalley, Thrill House Publishing, and M.O. Mack for an ARC in return for an honest review.
