I’m such a sucker for historical romances. I can’t get enough of them. This was another I really enjoyed. It was a nice break from all the adult fantasy I’ve been reading lately.

Caroline Reid lives in Scotland, and her uncle Sir. James Riddell is always away on business and she’s left alone with his grumpy housekeeper. When her uncle finally returns to Scotland and he informs Caroline, she will be traveling to America and living with him in Boston. Caroline was hoping for a season in London, she will have to make the most of Boston’s society and find a suitable husband. Her uncle business dealings are with a Mr. Matthew Dearborn, he’s an older man, lives in Boston and Caroline's concerned her uncle wants her to marry him?

Caroline sets sail for America, accompanied by her chaperone and things don’t go as planned. The Atlantic crossing is rough, when a storm hits, Caroline and widow Eleanor McCardell are the only two ladies unaffected by seasickness. Caroline’s a rather shallow and selfish young woman, and Eleanor points out it’s their duty to help the sick women aboard the ship, and she reluctantly agrees.

Arriving in Boston, Caroline’s uncle isn’t at the docks to meet her, Eleanor’s brother Dr. Ian Campbell is waiting for her and they drop a nervous Caroline at her uncle’s house. Eleanor hasn’t seen her brother Ian and sister Harriet MacDougall in over ten years. Harriet’s married to Allan MacDougall, they have two children and live in a farm in Canada.

Caroline develops feelings for Ian Campbell, he’s had dealings with her uncle in Scotland, he blames him for the loss of Achlic Farm and he hates Sir. James Riddell. Caroline discovers her uncle’s plan is to marry her off to his unsavory business partner, she feels trapped and doesn’t know what she will do? Isobel Moore has been patiently waiting for Ian Campbell to propose marriage, so when Caroline arrives, she feels threatened, Ian Campbell is torn between two women and he must follow his heart.

Her Rebel Heart is the second book in the Far Horizons series, is a story about Caroline moving across the other side of the world, old rivals meeting again, Ian having to make peace with his past, and choose the women he wants to make his bride. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, nice to catch up with familiar characters, I look forward to reading the next book in the series This Fragile Heart by Kate Hewitt, and fours stars from me.

I really enjoyed the second book in the Far Horizons Series. Hewitt really focuses on character building which connects you to the storyline. I'm looking forward to reading the third book which I have waiting for me on my Kindle right now!

The Rebel Heart is the second book in the Far Horizons Trilogy by Kate Hewitt. It follows The Heart Goes On, which I reviewed here.

The story begins where the last book ended. However, the focus is now mainly on the characters who were previously cast in the support role. Caroline Reid at first comes off as a spoilt, shallow woman. However, my feelings about her changed as the story progressed. I liked Eleanor and enjoyed seeing the development of her character through the pages. Another character who stood out for me is Isobel. I hope we will get to see more of her before the trilogy ends.

This is rich, poignant family saga set in the 1800s. It is a story about love, family, betrayal and courage. I love the evolution of the position of women in society as the story progressed and times changed.

This being a trilogy and a character-driven narrative, I totally recommend reading the books in order. I can’t wait to read the third book already.

Her Rebel Heart is the second book in the Far Horizons trilogy and even if a person has not read the first book in the series, The Heart Goes On, it is still easy to follow as the book contains ample hints as to the plot of the first book. With 27 chapters, this book is also longer than the first one.

The story continues with the Campbell, the MacDougalls and the Moores families, 10-12 years after the first book ends. Members of each of these families are now spread out across Prince Edward Island in Canada and Boston, USA, continuing with their quests to fulfill their dreams and ambitions while navigating new hopes, new opportunities and new troubles in the ever-changing landscape of PEI and Boston. Like the first book, the best parts about this book are the author's description of PEI and the Boston, which was emerging as one of the major growing cities of USA in the 1830s. The character development of characters, who played a supporting role in the first book but had a leading part to play in this one, was also done well. The author also incorporates the issue of counterfeit currency which was a huge problem in the USA, in the mid 1800s, as a result of a vast number of state banks issuing their own currency and the problems faced by the newer immigrants as part of the book's plotline.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and the author Kate Hewitt for the e-Arc of the book. This book was previously published under the title 'Another Country'.

Caroline Reid was excited to leave the chill of Scotland to travel to Boston and join her uncle. It was 1832 and once she arrived in Boston her uncle had promised her a season, where she could purchase new dresses and draw the men’s eyes to her – she wanted to make a good match, have a husband and children. The journey on the ship was long and rough – only she and the widow Eleanor McCardell remained well, so it was up to them to see to the other three women passengers who were suffering badly from seasickness.

Eleanor was travelling to join her brother, Ian Campbell whom she hadn’t seen for ten years. She was going to keep house for him as he was a busy man, a doctor in Boston. Her sister Harriet was on Prince Edward Island with her husband and children, and she hoped it wouldn’t be too long before she could catch up with Harriet as well.

Caroline’s uncle had plans for her and they didn’t include her falling for an almost penniless Ian Campbell, a person he had a history with. What would be the outcome for Caroline; for Eleanor, Henry and Margaret? Boston was only fifty years old and as with anywhere there were ruthless people, people who would stop at nothing to get what they wanted…

Her Rebel Heart is #2 in the Far Horizons trilogy by Kate Hewitt (previously titled Another Country) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But I noticed there are a lot of spoilers to the 1st in the series, The Heart Goes On, so they must be read in order. This one had very little set in Scotland – mostly it was set in Boston and Prince Edward Island, Canada. It was great to catch up with Harriet and Allan, ten years after we left them, plus Ian, an adult and through his medical training. I’m looking forward to #3, This Fragile Heart, which is the final of the trilogy. Highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve become a fan of the author because of this book! I highly recommend it.
I felt myself get swept up in this novel. It was very hard to put it down and not continue into the late of night reading. The characters are endearing and the setting interesting. Kind of reminds me of Outlander a little. Very well written!

An historical novel about emigrating to the New World and trying to forge a new life. There is more romance than historical detail. I would have liked this book better if it had been the other way round.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.

I enjoyed this second story of the Far Horizons trilogy. In this book we follow Caroline Reid and Eleanor (a young widow) as they travel from Scotland to Boston in search of adventure and a new life. Along the way they get caught up in some scandal and romances. This is the story of family, friendship, romance, courage, and home. I would recommend this book to anyone enjoying historical family dramas and romances. It is well written. Ms. Hewitt has a special talent in describing the scenes and developing the characters. She really brings you into the storyline. I look forward to starting the 3rd book in this series and seeing how the lives of the characters play out.

P.S. I do not like the "new" titles of these books, should've kept the previous, these titles sound too cheesy and "romancey" for my taste.

Her Rebel Heart is the 2nd part of the Far Horizons trilogy. It picks up 10 years after the 1st part and moves the majority of the story to Boston. As always, Kate Hewitt gives us a wonderful story and I loved reading how the characters have grown and changed. I'm looking forward to the 3rd part of this delightful trilogy!

Her Rebel Heart (Far Horizons Book 2) is a re-issued book by Kate Hewitt. It was titled Another Country in the past issue. While I had read the first book in the series years ago I have not read this one. That means I can not comment on if any revisions have been done to the new re-release book.

This story takes place some years after the first book of Henrietta Campbell and Allan MacDougall. Henrietta’s brother, Ian is at the center of this story. Through another sister he meets Caroline Reid who has traveled from Scotland to America. Caroline has much to learn and much growth to be ready for this new life. Ian and Caroline must overcome the past, ill placed ambitions, family issues and the hardships of the times.

Written in the same easy historical flowing style of the first book, this is a story to lose yourself in reading. Fans of sagas will love this historical family drama.

An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Young widow Eleanor Campbell McCardell and spoiled socialite Caroline Reid find themselves thrown together by circumstances beyond their control as they journey across the Atlantic from Scotland to Boston. Each has vastly different reasons for making the arduous crossing. Eleanor is seeking a fresh start, away from the confining restrictions of her disapproving in-laws. Caroline is seeking high society excitement and the social whirl promised by her wealthy uncle. Will they realize their hopes and dreams in America? Find out in this enthralling work of historical fiction, the second in Kate Hewitt’s Far Horizons trilogy.

The second book in this trilogy, but I think can be read as standalone as they focus on different Main characters , while they are related and it’s beneficial if you read the of first, I don’t think you couldn’t read on it’s own. I enjoyed this almost as much as the first book, it’s a slow paced and enjoyable read, focusing on the characters which I love. Beautifully written and emotional, these are great historical romance books.

Scots immigrants caught up in romance and 1830's Boston's growing pains 💙

Daring travel across the seas, romance, ambition, unrequited love, sickness and death, even a cruel puppet master of a criminal ring: this book gives you all that in an easy-to-read style. Unlike the first story in this historical family saga, Her Rebel Heart moves most of the action to the Boston area as various MacDougalls and Campbells establish themselves in 1830's Boston. Harriet and Allan, the long-suffering lovers I liked so much in The Heart Goes On, are settled in Maritime Canada and play a reduced role in this book.

The earlier story had more raw emotion, in my view. Yes, the main characters here love and suffer disappointments, separation (usually self-imposed), illness, a lack of communication, and danger, but for me their story just can't compare with Harriet and Allan's travails. That said, the story has plenty of action and highlights some interesting issues like the banking and currency free-for-all taking place and the woeful state of health care in that period.

I'd say this was an entertaining read. It just did not have that extra degree of pathos of the first book in the families' saga.

Thanks to publisher Bookouture and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

A fantastic continuation of the Campbell and MacDougall families!

After so thoroughly enjoying the first book, I was thrilled to read the next installment of this fascinating, epic story. Her Rebel Heart picks up ten years after the ending in The Heart Goes On, and we see the younger siblings now matured and ready to take on the world. Like the first book, this one takes us through two romances, but it also lets us catch up with the families that we're already familiar with and see how their HEAs are working out.

The vivid historical details instantly transport the reader back in time. Not only do we experience the day-to-day lives of the immigrants, but we also are witnesses to the politics and social norms of the times. From the transatlantic crossing to the medical experiments to the criminal element in 1932 Boston, there is quite a lot going on around every corner.

The romances are as different from each other as they can be, but be assured they both end with a triumphant HEA. Rupert, Ian, Eleanor, and Caroline are all wonderfully developed characters, people who are easy to care about even when they're not easy to love. Through it all, the emphasis is on the importance of family and making one's way in the world.

I was thoroughly captivated right from the start and couldn't put it down until I was done. It's every bit as well written as the first book, and I'm looking forward to reading the third. If you like family sagas like Centennial, you'll love this series. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

4.5 Stars
1832, Scotland: When Caroline Reid is offered the chance to travel to America to live with her estranged uncle, she has only two things on her mind: to become the belle of Boston society and to make an enviable—and financially advantageous—match. However from the moment her journey begins, things do not go as she expects. From having to nurse her fellow passengers who are suffering from seasickness, to the unexpected friendship she strikes up with a young widow named Eleanor, the Caroline who set sail for the New World isn’t quite the same person who arrives there…
Then she meets Eleanor’s brother, Ian Campbell, and her rebel heart cannot help but beat faster. Even though he doesn’t have a fortune, Caroline’s feelings overwhelm her earlier ambitions. However, her uncle—who had so gallantly invited her to live in his house—has other plans. And he will stop at absolutely nothing to get what he wants
This is the second book in the triology, it could be read on its own however I’d recommend reading the books in order as they do follow on from each other & do follow the lives of the Campbell & MacDougall families. A well written story that flowed well & we get two romances. Strong characters who are well portrayed, the good guys being very likeable & the villains horrid. This book takes place over a decade after the previous one so we learn what happens when the youngsters have grown up. Life hasn’t been kind to some but for all it’s been hard, some have found that their hard work has given them a contented life. I found the book to be a captivating read & now move onto the third book, my only quibble was that I found the ending to be a little rushed
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Her Rebel Heart (first published as “Another Country” in 2013) was the second book in the Far Horizons series. The trilogy, set in the early 19th century, follows the story of a handful of families from Scotland forced to emigrate when their lives are torn apart due to the clearings of their lands by British absentee landowners. This book focuses on Caroline Reid who travels to Boston to live with her estranged uncle. The author does a good job describing Boston in the 1800s and her characters are well written. I have read many books by Kate Hewitt. I found this series to be a fairly slow read.
