The conclusion to the Codebreaker Trilogy is rich in history with realistic characters. Lily is such an interesting character with an amazing ability to read and create photographs to help the British intelligence. Zivon Marin, the Russian expert cryptographer was forced to leave Russia because if his views about Lenin. Together, Lily and Zivon will form a friendship as they both work together at Admiral Hall. The story has some parallels to what's happening in the world today which is a plus. Hate to see the series end! Very enjoyable! Highly recommended!
I had not read anything by this author (I think) and definitely not anything from this series. I found it interesting and character driven. While characters from previous books were mentioned (I did my research and put them on my to read list), it was easy to read as a standalone.
I got this book in exchange for a free review. I chose it based on the description and I certainly don't regret it. If you read authors like Sarah Sundin, this author will not disappoint. It was a satisfying and meaty read and that took me longer than I normally would take to read a book. Worth the money (it would be if I had paid for it anyway!).
It's amazing to me how many of the events and situations in this book parallel the things happening in our world today....from the propaganda and new bias to the 1918 Spanish Flu...this is a historic read that will feel very relevant. It revisits some characters from previous books in this series - though you don't need to have read them to read this one - and helps us to continue their stories. Lily and Zivon are the main characters here, forming an unlikely romance that carries them through difficult times.
A Portrait of Loyalty is the third book in the Codebreakers series.
Two Russian brothers, each on the opposite side of the war. A young English woman gifted in photography is key to creating propaganda by altering photos.
Lily Blackwell sees life behind the lens of her camera. She assists the British government with her talent. Zivon Marin was a high ranking Russian linguist/cryptographer when he fled Russia and found work with Admiral Hall in Room 40.
Several of the characters from previous books made their appearance and it was nice to see them back to working for the greater good of England. There was one particular scene that brought tears to my eyes as the outbreak of the Flu of 1918 swept through London.
All in all, it was a sweet romance between Lily and Zivon. Roseanna White consistently researches her material and brings the book to life with intrigue and beauty.
I received a complimentary ebook copy from the publisher, through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Do you know the best thing about a favorite author coming out with a new book? That a favorite author has a new book.
Do you know the worst thing about a favorite author coming out with a new book? Reading it in two hours.
Wow, I love how "A Portrait of Loyalty" is not your usual WWI story.
There's romance, there's intrigue, there's hope, there's sadness, there's just so many emotions, thoughts, and feelings spinning through your mind as you read this new masterpiece from Roseanna M. White.
I highly recommend you read this book!
Sixteen up due to kissing, mentions of unsaved characters who sleep together, and a pregnancy outside of romance.
I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher/review company. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This book continues with the Codebreakers series. This book did not disappoint. In turn, I found myself immersed so much in the book that events that happened within the pages, I could feel. Just beware of sadness within.
However, on the flip side I find it so interesting the story that she weaves that has parallels to what is happening today in America. I won’t describe what exactly just that your eyes will be opened and in awe. More determined to make sure that one faction doesn’t speak for the rest.
A Portrait of Loyalty is based on Lilly Blackwell who is a photographer who assists the government with pictures. She examines them for propaganda (false narratives), while creating her own style of propaganda for the British government. A Russian codebreaker starts working for the same place that she does, and they soon form a friendship. This friendship is just what Zivon Marin needs to survive the coming fire to his being.
A+ book, Roseanna is able to keep up the momentum with each story she writes, without losing a piece of her. Not many authors can continue a series without tripping up somewhere along the way and writing a blah book. This hasn’t happened yet. If you haven’t started reading the Codebreakers series, I would recommend that you start at the beginning. It’s not necessary, but the series is so good it will help you place people’s faces to their own experiences.

This book was absolutely fantastic. I was completely engrossed in this plot and absolutely adored all of the characters. This series has truly been exceptional. A Portrait of Loyalty was perfectly paced, full of historical interest, and an completely perfect ending to a flawless series. Zivon was such a serious and soulful character and unlike any of her previous hero’s, but I loved the depth and calm that seemed to embody him. Lily was the perfect balance of intelligence and heart, but her appreciation for beauty really made her a perfect match for Zivon. The twists and turns in this story kept me fully invested and there were some shock factor moments that I haven’t quite gotten past. This was truly a flawless novel by Roseanna White and I cannot recommend this series enough to historical fiction fans.
***EXCELLENT END TO THE WWI SERIES***

Zivon Marin / Evgeni Marin - Two Russian brothers battle for what they believe is right and just for the future of the world, each shrouded in covert operations during the war. "He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder: he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth."

Lilian Blackwell deals in her own clandestine maneuvers; extremely talented behind her Kodak No.1 Autographic Special, model A camera and in the darkroom. "Something about him struck her as photographic, as if he were already a still life captured on film. What would he look like when actually put to paper? Would the camera see the same thing her eyes did, or would it not translate into a photograph, where everything was caught in a moment devoid of motion? No. She'd learned to capture motion - or its story, anyway - with her camera. She would just have to see if she could capture its opposite too. A challenge she'd never taken up before, but one she was determined to meet.

Tea Quote: Perhaps she would see if Ara would like to have tea or something. They rarely had the chance to socialize outside of Charing Cross (hospital).

This story is chock full of information & wonderful detail. I loved how it was woven through the tense war years, the 1918 flu epidemic, and the faith of believers vs the righteousness of non-believers. I also found it precious that people brought together during those difficult days could still find love, clinging to one another for support. I was NOT prepared for the part of the story that brought me to sobbing tears. It was very emotional and definitely required pause and tissues. Very well written and highly recommended.

"His promises have not changed just because my circumstances have. He is still the giver of all. The lover of our souls. No matter how bad our situation, He is still good. All we have to do is look for Him."

Beautiful characters that became so dear to my heart! I was drawn into this story and my mind stayed constantly on it until the last page. As this story unfolds the readers heart is fully immersed with the love of each character. The beauty and talent that draws life into the very pages of this book brings so many emotions with it. Tears and mourning bring about love, life and forgiveness throughout this amazing story. The author does a incredible job of showing the atrocities of war as well as God is still in control and is there in the midst of it all. The dedication of all who worked for the cause of country and fellow man was astounding, courageous, a light in the darkness of war. This is a story that will stay in the readers mind impacting how we see beauty when there is so much falling apart around us. To describe this book as anything less than beautiful, engaging and fully engulfing the soul would be an injustice!
