Not since the days of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark have I read short stories, they just are not my thing but I decided to get this on a whim, for a sense of nostalgia I guess. When I read the breakdown of what the book was about I had a feeling of summer nights reading creepy stories in sheet tents while staying up late in the living room.
There are 24 stories that are here to rile you up, most narrated by its own Narrator. Most of the stories where very enjoyable, and the couple I didn't find exciting where over before I could get bored with them. I honestly think the worst thing about any of these stories is I wished they were longer. Several of them could easily have been made into a novella or even a full length book.
In closing, if you're a fan of the Scary Story series and want an adult dose of cold chills or are just a fan of horror then I recommend this book.
Untold Mayhem is a collection of short horror stories that involve real life scenarios. The audiobook has a different narrator for each short story.
I was honored to receive an ARC from Netgalley for Untold Mayhem. In honor of that here is my honest review.
I had to DNF this collection 70% of the way through. Even though the stories were different, some things started to feel repetitive, especially when it came to some of the wording of the stories. I was giving each story there own star rating and the last few that I read were a one star. I do think that the novel should have had less stories, because while listening to the audiobook, the narrators voices just sounded the same and or lacked the emotion that the story needed.
That given, there are some things that I can say went well. If you are into stories that can/could happen in a real life scenario, this book has plenty of horror ideas. My favorite short story was "The Hole" giving a "Yellow Wallpaper" type of feel. I think some of the stories the author has written would make a compelling full length novel.
This is my first introduction to Mr Mark Tullius and his work. I am a huge fan of short story collections, especially within the horror/thriller genre. I thought this collection would be right up my alley. Unfortunately, in my opinion it failed to deliver. Here are things I did enjoy. First, the quantity and length of stories are great which in turn renders a wonderful pace and flow. Second, there are many good messages regarding race and prejudice found within the stories. That elevated a few stories for me. These are the things I did not enjoy. First, many of the stories lacked depth and substance. I feel that there could have been more realized characters in a few of the stories. Second, several stories end abruptly without any sense of catharsis on the reader's part. There is also not enough time given to get to know the characters enough to care about their fate. Third, and worst of all, I was able to predict most outcomes. This meant that I gave up on the story before it ended. While this is not a perfect book, maybe not even a good one, I would like to recommend people to read (or listen). Short stories reach people in many different ways. Most books do.
I have quite enjoyed Untold Mayhem! Short stories are not normally my go to when selecting my next read, but I am glad that I gave this (audio)book a whirl. The description won me over - what can I say? I'm a curious cat. The beauty about short stories is that there is a story for everyone. I doubt that any one reader will like ALL of the stories, but it's likely that readers will enjoy more than they do not. Even the stories that I did not care for, they were still good. This audiobook is great for those with a heckuva commute! The stories are just long enough to hold one's attention but not so long that you feel lost or bogged down if you happen to drift into that trance like state. Overall, three stars because I "liked it."
I really enjoyed this book of short stories. They were a perfect length for me and were different aspects of horror, suspense and thriller. Some were shocking and scary. All of them were worth reading. This was a new author to me and I would read him again!
I really loved the way the stories in this book were done. So many fun and unexpected twists and each narrator was perfectly suited to the story they were telling. I enjoying every second of this book.
The narration in these stories was varied in it's effectiveness and quality but was mostly very good. The dories themselves were just OK. I was really looking forward to them and none really stood out. I could barely tell you what one story was really very good. Usually I use an anthology to find new authors to read more of and I didn't get that from this one. It was pretty tame. Maybe more for middle school and high school students than for me.
I was really looking forward to this. And was so disappointed. None of the short stories were scary in the slightest. Some were kind of gross. But not repulsive like it marketed itself to be. Very disappointing. The narration also took away from the scariness a little. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I enjoyed listening to these stories and especially liked the narrator. Those who listen to these stories at night might have a difficult time sleeping.
I have to say one of the things that REALLY bothered me with a few of the stories was the use of the word "retarded". This is an extremely offensive word, especially for families of children with disabilities. It is akin to saying the 'N' word to these parents and family members.
At this point because of the use of the above-mentioned word, I will not be recommending this book. I will not be posting any information on social media about this book. I would not want to share a negative review. I hope Mr. Tullius will consider changing this word once the book/audiobooks are released in September.
Untold Mayhem is a nice collection of horrific, disturbing, and creative short stories. The narrator changes each story, and each voice seems well-suited to each story.
I enjoyed this book of short stories, although fair warning: They aren't for the faint of heart. Some of them get pretty dark. When I say short stories, I mean short stories. I think the average story was about 15 minutes long or so, so they were perfect to listen to because you were never far from finishing one. Sometimes in an audiobook, it's hard to find a good stopping point. With these, though, you were only ever about 7-10 minutes away from the end of a story, so they were easy to start and stop in progress. That was super convenient.
There were several different narrators for the stories, and I really liked most of them. There was only one that I didn't really care for. He just didn't fit with the theme. He was too upbeat for the stories he was telling. The rest of the narrators were perfect. I loved the pacing. I kept the audiobook playing on 1.25 speed for most of the book, and that was just right for me.
I loved - loved - the story about the cop who ends up in a store during a robbery. (Sorry, I tried to find a story list so that I could list the title, but I can't find one online anywhere.) That one was particularly amazing. The story about the artist's blind date was also spine-tingling.
As I said, these were dark stories, and most of them were not supernaturally dark, although there were a few supernatural elements thrown in. Mostly, these were stories about the darkest parts of human nature, and as we all know, that can get very dark. I was definitely creeped out listening to some of these, but in a good way. All in all, I liked this collection.
Audio book from Netgalley. This one had a good mix of thriller, crime, and violent horror stories. I really enjoyed some more than others but I think overall the mix was great. Looking back I can only think of a few that didn't hold my interest or that I didn't really care for, all the others were a dead hit. I love going to Goodreads and reading other reviews just to hear I enjoy the stories that others didn't like. I, for whatever reason, love reading paranormal, true crime, horror, suspense, thrillers, and the gore and violence in a book rarely bothers me at all. In fact, I love it when the narrator can really set the mood with their voice and make you pay attention. Scaring me a little is the point, and these narrators did a great job reading these stories and setting the tone. I also like the fact the stories were short so you had time to pause before the next story began. This was my first audio book from Netgalley and I really enjoyed it. I'm definitely going to search for others.
I took a chance on this book despite the fact that I’m usually not the biggest fan of short story collections. I’m so glad I read it. This book is fantastic!
Each short story is written in such an intriguing and dynamic manner than I kept wanting more of every single one. Each story played out in my head like a movie. I, personally, would love to see a tv adaptation of it!
The narrators were phenomenal! Every single one stood out in their own individual way and increased my overall enjoyment of this book. I’m already recommending it to my friends.
*Thank you NetGalley for an advanced audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
Untold Mayhem is a fantastic collection of short thriller/horror stories. Mark Tullius thoroughly executes creepy storytelling for a late-night, campfire, or anytime listening. His stories are diverse and range in depth and length. These tales will leave you thinking after the fact as the author weaves together all types of wild scenarios. Some of the stories were excellent and some a little less than, but overall the whole collection was fun and goosebumpy. I have a strong feeling H.P. Lovecraft and, of course, Stephen King, maybe some of his influences. I love short stories, especially in this genre. Tullius has a way of allowing you to invest in the characters even if it's only for a brief time. Great book!
3.75/5 stars

This book is a compilation of horror short stories. Everything horror related is in it, from crime to paranormal stories, nothing is forgotten. To give you chills and keep you up at night or to make you paranoïd about that weird neighbor of yours, this book will do it all.
I got this book as an audiobook on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. Obviously as for every short story collection some were better than others. My personal favourites were the first two stories. All the stories are smartly crafted and the tension is nearly constant. Unfortunately I felt like some mental disorders are badly represented but it’s quite common in horror.
The cast of narrators is great. They each give life to the stories in their own way. The fact that the voices are often changing makes it easier to understand that you're not on the same story if you weren’t paying attention when they announced the chapter titles.
Even if I’m not a fan of short stories because I often feel like they aren’t as impactful as a whole book, I found that these really worked well and had a great pacing.
I think the audio format worked well for the stories as it made them even scarier in my opinion.
The only thing I would change is the representation of mental disorders and maybe diversify the characters a bit more.
All in all I recommend this book to everyone who wants to be a bit scared and who aren’t afraid of gore.
Lurking in the soundwaves of this audiobook are 24 dark and twisted tales. This 'tantalizing blend' of macabre tales of suspense, horror, and undeniably grizzly crime will tickle the fancies of hardcore horror fans.
Each tale is unique and stands on its own. Yet, they are connected by three short words - dark...disturbing...violent.
The book cover caught my eye right off. I enjoyed the soothing tone of the narrators voice in part. The story became a bit too bloody for my taste. I am ashamed to admit II must have accidentally hit a wrong button whilst checking out the impressive book cover. All that being said I firmly feel if this was a genre I was comfortable reading I would have rated it a solid 3 1/2.
If this kind of book is your jam than you will love it!
Thank you NetGalley and Vincere Press for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I Loved this collection of short stories! I felt like each one was a mystery in itself. Each story was unique and grotesque in it's own way and I couldn't wait for the next one to start. Each Narrator brought their own style to the stories and I appreciated their diversity.
Having grown up with Stephen King and Dean Koontz, I really appreciated Mark Tullius's writing. I will listen to this one again and again.
Recommended for fans of HORROR, Mystery thrillers and those seeking a quick read.
loved it!
This overall was a really good group of short stories. Of course with every book of short stories you’re bound to like some and also to dislike some. For the purposes of this book, I have the following rating system: Hate (1), Dislike (3), Meh (7), Like (6), and Love (7).
I’m not going to go into detail for each story, but I will mention that the one I hate it’s News First and while I’m up for some good ole fashioned gore and nastiness, but damn. This story went there and beyond. It hit a little too close to home with the shooting then it took it too far. I hated it so much that I almost couldn’t take it.
The stories I absolutely love are The Hole, The Fine Print, Left Behind, Counting on It, No Service, The Feeling is Back, and Left Unfinished. Each one of these had a quality that was either creepy, scary, or had harsh justice that I can really get behind. Sometimes I didn’t see the ending coming and other times I was giggling with joy at the karma of it all. So while I really, really, REALLY hated the one story, there were too many that I liked or loved to say it was anything below four stars.
So while I totally do recommend this, watch out, when the description says violence, they mean it!! If you’re not into the blood and gore, definitely skip News First and be cautious when reading the rest. But enjoy!!!!
Thanks so much to NetGalley, Vincere Press, and Mark Tullius for a copy of this book for my honest and unbiased opinion.
I really enjoyed each story. I knew every book would end in a death, but for some reason each story blew me away. Some were a lot better than others, but overall they were all so good! This is the first time I've read a collection on stories in any genre, and I must say, I am so happy this was my first!
