Beautiful
I really liked the variety of animals, and therefore the variety of nest types included. The book was very educational and the information was well presented.

Builders is a great nonfiction beginner's guide to a variety of animals that build burrows, lodges, dens, nests, and more. Filled with colorful illustrations and plenty of basic information about each featured animal, this would be great for upper elementary grades to use for research projects.

A very good book for the primary school library, that concentrates on the animals that can build their own homes, nests – or traps for their food. We start with the beaver, in a full double-page portrait, before getting two more spreads – the first an annotated selection of close-ups, where we learn they have a unique double toenail on their hind feet, and then a further splash page of their dam and lodge, with suitable captions. The other animals – birds, termites, spiders, et al – all get the same treatment. It's great to see the visual aspect of things go for realism as opposed to 'style' or 'inventiveness' or any kind of gaudy appeal; the accuracy of these illustrations is most commendable. There's not a lot here, and it is a niche part of biology, but I think this must be the best book on this narrow subject, so it comes strongly recommended. It's the first in what would appear to be a very rich and worthwhile series. Four and a half stars.
